A word from St. John
Fergus Henderson’s original home of “Nose to Tail Eating” opened in a former smokehouse around the corner from Smithfield Market in 1994.

Celebrating the finest of indigenous British produce and making the most of what is seasonally best whilst applying straight forward cooking techniques, St. John is now celebrated as one of the 50 Best Restaurants in the World and in 2009 was awarded its first Michelin Star.

Nose to tail eating means that, where appropriate, every part of the animal should be put to good use in the kitchen and so along with Roast Beef and Lemon Sole, diners will find Rolled Pig’s Spleen, Kidneys and Ox Heart, Liver and Chitterlings as well as the Roast Bone Marrow & Parsley Salad, something of a ‘signature’ dish.

Whilst often cited as not a restaurant to take a vegetarian too, the kitchen source and prepare dishes for vegetarians with the same amount of studiousness as they do the meat, fish and poultry and desserts.

  • Apart from the grouse...

Apart from the grouse that had an exceedingly "grousy" flavour we enjoyed everything else, the drink at the bar, with the nice smell of the the bakery, the friendly attitude (a couple of our party was late), the earthly food and the bellies' fullness

I took a couple of work colleagues here on a Wednesday night. The food was a mix of various animal organs, shellfish and fish. We had a mix of these and they were all prepared well however one of our guests was not as adventurous and might have went away hungry (more of a meat and 2 veg girl I think). Best check the menu with your guests to ensure they will find something they like before booking. Also there was a private party in the bar which made for a nuisance when wanting to have a pre-meal drink AND going to the loos. Would have been nice to know before booking as we might have chosen somewhere else.

One of the two slices of bone marrow my friend ordered was burnt. The fish of my main (hake and chips) had not been deboned properly. It was also difficult to get the attention of the waiters, who should have been actively looking around to see if the customers needed anything. The icecream my friend ordered came way before he came back from the loo. The food was not bad but not great. Overall, not what I would expect from a michelin starred restaurant.

This has to be the most unpretentious Michelin-starred restaurant I have visited. The dishes reminded me of my grandfather's cooking in a good way - nothing is wasted, and everything is done to enhance the simple flavours. The cooking felt quintessentially British - how I imagine meals were before the ready meal and TV dinners that became popular in the 50s and 60s. The service was extraordinarly fast too. I recommend it highly

St Johns is very different from all the restaurants I have been to. The restUrNt itself is quite simple. Staff is alright. The menu is unique. Different types of meat and vegetable combinations. The hare was a bit raw for my liking ant tasted more like kidney than hare but good overall. The desert was a bit chewy and heavy but the starters were really nice. I don't know if I would be rushing to go back there but it's worth the visit.

Nothing in the restaurant lived up to the expectations we had. The service was ok, but the waiter had little knowledge about the wine-list and could not answer our questions. The menue was messy and hard to understand. The food was average, ok but with no finesse, and no depth. It was just plain food. My dish with the pig was just boring and tasted nothing. The sitting room was very noise, the acoustics was bad, so it was impossible to hear what the waitor said, or trying to talk to one another in normal voice.

My husband was really looking forward to going to St. John after hearing about it and Fergus Henderson. Initially, we were pleased with the ambiance. It took a while for someone to come to our table, and for the rest of the evening, we were left unattended for long periods of time. It took my husband basically grabbing someone to remove the plates from our table, and even then the woman acted like we were inconveniencing her. The overall feeling was that they were doing us a favor by allowing us to eat at their highly acclaimed restaurant. It was a disappointment, especially after having such tremendous service at all the other restaurants we dined at in London (Salt Yard, Grenadier, Chiltern Firehouse, Sale e Pepe).

Having heard great things about the food at St John, I was keen to try their seasonal offerings. The food did not disappoint, We tried the Bone Marrow, Lamb, Kidneys and the Welsh Rarebot (oh my!! go for this alone!!) which were exceptional! Despite the long wine list we plumped for the house red, which was also great. Sadly, the service did not match up to the rest of our experience. I knew not to expect silver service, but wine was plonked onto our table, glasses weren't refilled and not once were we asked if we were enjoying our meals. Perhaps our waitress was having an off day? I would recommned, but with the caviat to expect poor service and spend what you would have on a tip on the Welsh Rarebit!

I had booked this as a fiftieth birthday treat for my husband knowing that he would enjoy the type of food provided. Having read some of the reviews I approached the experience with some trepidation, I needn't have worried, it was a wonderful occasion everything I could have wanted for our celebratory meal. Some of the dishes were unusual but our waiter was very helpful in guiding us through the menu and all our choices were delicious.

Dine at St John often and have never been disappointed. The pigeon and trotter pie shared with my guest was outstanding. Diners are usually well spaced so a good venue to talk without being too overheard. Service spot on - attentive, but not overly so, and knowledgeable. Would recommend a visit; the menu is always good, and if the pie is on, a real treat. Looking forward to my next visit.

St. John takes everything from the animal, all lowly bits and pieces, and creates something exceptional from them. Truly great execution by the chefs working with a very welcoming staff to create a great dinner. Their wines are good and, as the food itself, very reasonably priced, considering quality and taste. Truly recommendable.

The starter was delicious; roast bone marrow with parsley salad. Nothing to complain about there. My main however was nothing special (disappointing in fact) and for the price i was expecting more than a pile of cooked lentils with only a small serving of duck. I would expect the ratio of duck to lentil to favor the duck. Wine again was nothing to write home about. Given how expensive it is i would not consider going back.

The staff could neither have been more friendly nor helpful. The plainly decorated, furnished, but comfortable surroundings added to the whole dining experience. The food came quickly, was well presented and the menu in itself is entertaining. The kid neck was outstanding - the lemon granita with Russian vodka historic! Reasonably priced and well worth a second and third visit.

I'd say that this second visit to St John's was mildly disappointing. While some of the dishes display the expected brilliance from a kitchen run by a chef's chef, some were rather common and not really up to scratch. The service was ok but our waiter was not that friendly (cultural thing perhaps?) although, most importantly, they were helpful and relatively prompt. On the food, the bread remains a culinary phenomenon. The venison soup served was ethereal and perhaps one of the best meat soups I have ever had. The bone marrow remains a signature dish but my wife's squid was a bit, may I say, nothing special. Two main courses were really not up to snuff (ox liver &crumbed veal accompaniment). Rabbit was great though! Expect better.

I eat at St John two or three times a year and always look forward to it. Despite that anticipation the restaurant never disappoints. The ambiance is intentionally utilitarian, and that's fine. Everything has already been said about the food, which is deceptively simple. Don't go expecting twizzles and foams, this is not the place for that. Instead, expect perfectly prepared, intensely flavoured and substantial food. There is an emphasis on bits of animal (furred, finned or fowl), and an emphasis on the non-meat bits. There are usually one or two dishes that is suitable for vegetarians. I can't tell whether the food is getting better or my memory is getting worse. Either way, the food is excellent.

Oxtail and mash for main was delicious and the Welsh rarebit on the side, although random, was great, especially with the Lea and Perrins to accompany it. Crab on toast to start was a decent sized portion but nothing special and the baked cheesecake was slightly watery - pretty upsetting considering the pricetag. Most upsetting was the service. Things started off fine but after we politely asked where our wine was halfway through our starter, we must have somehow offended her because she barely cracked a smile for the rest of the evening. Food was served without a murmur and the dessert menu was practically slammed on the table. Whilst the food was good, I think I'll stick to bread and wine from St John in the future.

We went here for a birthday meal but this was probably a mistake as it's not really a destination for a special event. The food was ok but nothing special and I feel I might not be sophisticated enough to appreciate the simplicity of it. The main problem, however, was the service, which was not what you would expect from a Michelin restaurant. I did not feel our waitress was particularly interested in her job or the food. Talking to us or explaiining about a dish seemed like too much hard work and too many things were forgotten: water, champagne and desserts. I don't know if it was an off night but there just seemed to be a lack of care or interest in the customers. I'd recommend going but sit in the bar, not the main dining area.
