A word from St. John
Fergus Henderson’s original home of “Nose to Tail Eating” opened in a former smokehouse around the corner from Smithfield Market in 1994.

Celebrating the finest of indigenous British produce and making the most of what is seasonally best whilst applying straight forward cooking techniques, St. John is now celebrated as one of the 50 Best Restaurants in the World and in 2009 was awarded its first Michelin Star.

Nose to tail eating means that, where appropriate, every part of the animal should be put to good use in the kitchen and so along with Roast Beef and Lemon Sole, diners will find Rolled Pig’s Spleen, Kidneys and Ox Heart, Liver and Chitterlings as well as the Roast Bone Marrow & Parsley Salad, something of a ‘signature’ dish.

Whilst often cited as not a restaurant to take a vegetarian too, the kitchen source and prepare dishes for vegetarians with the same amount of studiousness as they do the meat, fish and poultry and desserts.

We enjoyed our meal, but it was not Michelin Star blow your socks-off. The dessert (a bread pudding with "butterscotch" sauce, was lackluster. I would definitely go again, but the place is quite loud (no soft surfaces to reduce the noise level), and a bit pricey for the actual meals we had.

As always, the food was excellent. Their specialist starter, bone marrow, was superb, and the wines excellent. It was a little spoiled this time by the poor service. We had to ask four times for water before it was served and our waitress never smiled (a new person came later and was good).

Oxtail and mash for main was delicious and the Welsh rarebit on the side, although random, was great, especially with the Lea and Perrins to accompany it. Crab on toast to start was a decent sized portion but nothing special and the baked cheesecake was slightly watery - pretty upsetting considering the pricetag. Most upsetting was the service. Things started off fine but after we politely asked where our wine was halfway through our starter, we must have somehow offended her because she barely cracked a smile for the rest of the evening. Food was served without a murmur and the dessert menu was practically slammed on the table. Whilst the food was good, I think I'll stick to bread and wine from St John in the future.

I always loved this place, and it stays like this. Nothing will change my mind. This time the food was a bit tasteless, looked quite unfinished in my plates. The parsley salad was just not the same, and my lamb tongues were having just like a boiled tastes.

We went here for a birthday meal but this was probably a mistake as it's not really a destination for a special event. The food was ok but nothing special and I feel I might not be sophisticated enough to appreciate the simplicity of it. The main problem, however, was the service, which was not what you would expect from a Michelin restaurant. I did not feel our waitress was particularly interested in her job or the food. Talking to us or explaiining about a dish seemed like too much hard work and too many things were forgotten: water, champagne and desserts. I don't know if it was an off night but there just seemed to be a lack of care or interest in the customers. I'd recommend going but sit in the bar, not the main dining area.

The server was not just formal but actually glum. He really didn't want to advise us about the vegetables we should order presuming we should have worked that out. He's probably got some regular/favourites who he'd rather have served. We had the special steak pie for two. The crust looked rustic (and burnt around the edges) enough, and the piece of bone in the middle, acting as the pie funnel was rustic. Break through the hard thin crust and eh voila. A few pieces of not very tender meat floating in a lumpy natural coloured beige/grey sauce devoid of taste. We struggled to pretend it was enough for two.

We were looking forward to celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary at St. John, after receiving recommendations from several friends. We might have been unlucky, but the experience was a major let down. Average service, average food. One of the main courses (grouse) tasted just awful. On a positive note it should be said that St. John is not very expensive for a Michelin starred restaurant. But then again, it doesn't deserve the star, if I should judge from our experience.

This was my boyfriend's choice for his birthday dinner as he wanted to try something new. The food was really delicious and it was good to try cuts of meat we wouldn't normally eat. There was a slightly noisy child in the restaurant still at half 9, which took away from the ambience a little but otherwise was a good evening. The desserts were particularly good.

A visit to St. John is an experience, you are served exactly what it says on the menu, the surprise is just that. It is basic food that some restaurants may not usually serve up, but cooked very well, nothing over complicated, but presented just right. I was well full when i left the restaurant. The only downside is that it is noisy, you just have to talk louder.

I admired the philosophy behind the restaurant and had heard great things fro therecentobserver food magazinefor instance and hence have been meaning to visit. We were soexcited about the visit. However the excedingly rude and arrogant staff members made the meal awkward. We felt unwelcomed ( perhaps we didnt fit their clientile profile of sophisticated media types with inside jokes or ironic beards). The staffwere unhelpful andunplesant. I felt embarrased to havebrought myparents there. Never again. Ps I have recommended the restaurant for veggie options as a joke, since there is nooption for ' not recommended'.

For a restaurant that sells itself on "nose to tail" cuisine the menu was less than adventurous but outrageously expensive for what was after all offal. Soggy craclkling is inexcusable at these prices. The lack of imagination spread to the accompaniments to the mains. One vegetable, lacking in taste and with a bland sauce. Those who thought "marrow" might mean marrowbone were sadly disappointed by the appearance of the vegetable of the same name. The side order veg was reminiscent of Mrs Beaton. The sommeliers tried her best but her colleagues let her down - inattentive waiters more intent on strutting their stuff than attending to their customers. The canteen design means that conversation soon becomes impossible as the volume increases.

I had high expectations for this restaurant, after reading reviews and a strong recommendation by a friend. Although I found the menu quite interesting, the execution was not impressive. The rabbit was so dry, it was virtually inedible. The pork was very flavorful, but also dry. The best dish we had was the ox heart, which was sliced thinly and grilled, and served with a horseradish sauce. The salad we ordered never arrived.

From arriving to departing, we had a lovely, interesting, educational and delicious experience. The knowledge and respect for ingredients and how to treat them, as well as treating guests. We brought our two kids, and it went very well. Both they and the staff at St John´s showed much respect, understanding and appreciation for each other. I have in the past and will continue to recommend St John´s to my swedish foodie friends. I hope they make the journey - the bone marrow alone is totally worth it.

I came to St John on the recommendation of a friend. I'm from the States and, when traveling, I try to order things with which I'm unfamiliar, have never tasted, or don't even know. In that spirit, I ordered the Lamb Sweetbreads (pancreas) with broad beans and bacon, and LOVED it. Fantastic dish, well prepared, with a hint of mint that really surprised. Very excellent service, unique and wonderful food. It was a little loud in the dining room with a very large party, but I still enjoyed the ambiance. I HIGHLY recommend St John. My only regret: I did not order the Bone Marrow and Parsley salad. The diners next to me did, and boy, did it look GOOD. Thanks for a beautiful and unusual meal!

    Dined on 22/7/2014
Too bad that the kitchen didn't see that the peas was too old served to a female teenager. It will always give problems and for us spoiled the half of the meal time. The bone marrow was god but the rest was quite ordinary. I didn't expect a Michelin restaurant to be at that level. Some times I have in private the enjoy to have food that inspired your eyes ( ex. Use the colour orange at the bone marrow, fresh spice at the butter beans, green, etc.), your sence of smell, and the taste and then you only need a very little physical amount of food to be "full". The bone marrow was as a first dish too "full". Only 2 bones and one piece of bread is enough. But anyway good luck with the restaurant just go on with the best you Can do.

I had been looking forward to my meal at St John even before I left Australia. My son and several friends had dined here before. I was certainly not disappointed. From the time I stepped into the restaurant the service was prompt, polite and informative. I was dining alone which meant I could not share the experience or have someone else's plate to try another dish. My starter of roasted bone marrow with parsley salad and sour dough was melt in the mouth sweet. For mains I had the lamb sweetbreads with bacon. Several sweetbreads came in a delicious sauce with pieces of lovely smoked bacon throughout. I was glad I also ordered a side of jersey royals to lap up the sauce. All washed down with a bottle of 2011 Chat Fou. Superb

I took my husband for his birthday. The food was tasty but very basic looking. The venue was interesting but very relaxed. The staff were excellent however. We enjoyed it but were not wowed. It all seemed almost too simple and rustic eg The jersey royal potatoes were massive with nothing on them except a sprinkle of herbs, the pigeon and beetroot was exactly just that. There wasn't any complexity with flavours deserving a mchelin star. It was good to visit but certainly did not have a michelin star feel to it.

After hearing such good things about these proponents of nose-to-tail eating in the media, we were very much looking forward to our meal here. It was so very disappointing. Firstly the variety of anything that could fall under the "nose-to-tail" category was very limited. The starters were nice, but not overwhelmingly so, but the mains were terrible. The crispy pigs cheek was very very salty (and I'm a salt addict, so it wasn't a taste issue) and the portion of protein was tiny (mostly a heavily dressed accompaniment) and the pigeon was so tough as to be almost inedible. The canteen setting/atmosphere would have been a charming quirk had the food held its own - as it was it felt like a reflection of the food being served in it.
