A word from Steam and Rye

Steam and Rye, a late night Americana themed bar and restaurant, situated in the heart of the City opened to critical acclaim in November 2013. The menu features classic American crab-shack cuisine including USDA Grain-fed beef from Greater Omaha, BBQ spare ribs & tender, beautifully flavoured steaks cooked on the Josper Grill. Additionally, favourites such as crab cake, Lobster by the pound, and Smoked Pulled Pork, have attracted diners from far and wide.
The food is all prepared fresh on site, by a team led by celebrated chef Andrew McLeish (of Michelin starred Chapter One, Kent).
The 70 capacity restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on weekdays and for dinner from 6pm on Saturdays. All you can eat Ribs&Shrimp every Monday&Tuesday!!

Diner Reviews
  • "Went to Steam and Rye with some work mates and specifically went for the all you can eat ribs and shrimps. When we got the food my mate said 'you can tell a good rib when the meat falls off the bone!'. So that was an initially good sign!!! I had the shrimps and these where probably some of the best shrimps for a diner that i have ever tasted, they were soft and not chewy at all. Then i had some of the ribs and they were also so tasty!!! I would recommend this place to anyone for the all you can eat but I have to say the service was second to none. As soon as we finished one plate of food they were over asking us if we wanted more!!!! If asked to go again....................absolutely yes i would!!!!!!"

  • "I went with 3 colleagues from work and had a great time. We went on Wednesday night for the ladies sorority night, and couldn’t believe the bill at the end - such good value for money and in the city too! But that wasn’t the only great thing about the night, they accommodated our request to change the time of our reservation effortlessly (thanks Laura!) and it meant we were able to arrive in good time from work. Also, the food was just great. 2 of us had the ribs and the other the burger and they were so yummy. The slaw was amazing too. In fact the food was just great. I would highly recommend it. Thanks for a great evening!"

  • "The main issue was poor service in this restaurant, our waitress simply didn't have any customer service skills and this was evident in almost every interaction with her. Another problem the heat! The restaurant was like a sauna and many people were having to step outside to cool down. This was not helped by fact that we were a party of 10 people cramped into a booth that was too small for our numbers and this made for an uncomfortable dining experience. Manager took service charge off our bill. We selected this venue to celebrate my fiance's birthday and had intended to stay there all evening, but we left after the meal. Food was OK, nothing special. I would return to this venue for a drink, but would never dine there again."

  • "After all the press coverage I was expecting a really great evening - however the "bull" was in the corner next to the bar and wasn't even working. The food and service were pretty poor, but ultimately the bar itself was dark and cheap - was expecting so much more - would not reccommend."

  • "Food was amazing especially the shrimp! Would recommend it to anyone! 5 dollar shake cocktail also amazing! However there wasn't much going on in the place, it may have been as it was a weekday they don't put a show on I don't know but it was a good night, would like to return with a group of people"

  • "We ate at Steam and Rye on a Tuesday to take advantage of the £17.95 ribs and shrimp offer. Steam and Rye do good ribs and good shrimp. The only fly in the ointment was the hostess, who looked good in a 1920s flapper dress but that was about it. We were early and she said “your table is available, but not ready.” When I asked her to clarify I got the same answer so we admitted defeat, went to the bar and sorted it out with the normal waiting staff who were more helpful. When my other friend arrived after us she was told by the hostess that she had no booking for me and left my friend to it. My friend wandered round by herself until she found us. Is this customer service? Great food but let down by a 1920s flapper..."

  • "The food and service was fantastic and there were plenty of staff buzzing about to get us whatever we needed. The price was reasonable considering the amount we drank and ate so I was impressed with the bill too. My only criticism would be that it was extremely hot in the Grand Central booth we was sitting in although also very spacious so we had a whole space to ourselves... Overall it was a great night, great food, service and atmosphere, especially when the band kicked off... just too hot hot hot in the carriage booths."

  • "I booked a table for 4 people at 8:45pm for my boyfriends birthday. I was told the table would have balloons and we arrived and the table had not been decorated. We then had to wait around 20 minutes for each round of drinks to be brought to us. The worst thing about the evening was trying to eat our expensive meal whilst being surrounded by drunk guests at the bar - the tables for 4 are literally on the same floor as the bar area with a tiny rope separating you. All night we were being knocked into whilst trying to eat, people putting their empty glasses on our table and spilling drinks over us whilst dancing by our chair. A horrible dining experience, was very disappointed and will not be going back."

  • "Was a nice lunch but looks a bit worn and tattered on the inside. Expected more considering the location and the other amazing restuarants locally."

  • "I recently ate at Steam and Rye with a work colleague - the food is well priced, the portions are massive. The choice for a veggie is slightly limited though. Service was brilliant."

  • "I took clients to lunch at steam and rye and I wouldn't do it again. Although the food is good and the service is friendly, we were uncomfortable sat in a booth with a tv repeating the same advert."

  • "I booked this months ago as have been to Steam and Rye and loved it and wanted to chare this with friends as we were n London for the weekend. But despite booking well in advance were really upset to find instead of being in main part of venue, was in an upstairs room, well away from all the atmosphere, in a room that looked and felt like Rainforest Cafe !! I was upset, the friends I booked for re upset for me, and spoke to the Management who were rude, so uninterested and sad they were full and overbooked and could do anything and they didn't do anything, other people were complaining too beng stuck in the 'jungle room'. It's such a shame as food is great, but did not be experience we booked for and wnt return to service like that"

  • "I couldn't believe my eyes! It's really quite hard to get a table here - especially if you are a larger group. I managed to get a 6.30pm table for 2 on a Thursday at short notice and you very definitely only get 2 hours. All the tables and bar spaces were fully booked. That said - the food was quite good with generous proportion sizes. The wine list was good and although the tables were close together the size of the tables was also generous and the seats very comfy."

  • "More of a hen do/birthday celebrations place on a Saturday evening."

  • "Surprisingly a very fun venue on a thursday evening after work, felt like a saturday night.. If it was just based on the food, I would rate this place quite poor BUT Excellent band performing an impressive selection of live music (the old school garage set was my favourite), novelty cocktails in oil cans and popcorn boxes, fun-filled professional crowd, attentive and friendly staff and the unique venue is what sets this place apart from the rest. Go for drinks & starters and you're onto a good night any day of the week"

  • "Great value, great food, slow bring them out, speed up that services waiting 5-10 minutes between each serving of ribs not quite what you want! Services was great, ribs were amazing."

  • "When we arrived at the restaurant, we found the place to be very smelly and not really catering for Dinner reservations. music very loud, and ambiance very lack off. possible not returning, and not really value for money,"

  • "The steak was fatty and service poor, the football was on all around and we were surrounding by lads watching whilst we tried to enjoy a meal. This restauraunt has an identity crisis and does not match its description. If i wanted to listen to brit pop and drink with boozey football fans it would have been a wonderful experience. unsatisfied with our food and service we paid the extortionate bill and left."

  • "Food and drinks were amazing however we went on a Friday night and it was ridiculous! It was so busy that where we were sat down to eat had people crowded round drinking - people were leaning on the backs of our chairs and one person even spilt there drink on us as we ate"

  • "Great classics to bump along to while eating your Americanised grub. The cornbread was so tasty, as well as the giant sundae. We were super lucky and got complimentary drinks in a dino-head! All in all, was a great Monday night - just wished we'd come another night as they do live music then! "

  • "I had heard alot about this place and was looking forward to going. Food was average, very US and meat heavy but the mushroom mac n cheese was not amazing. The cocktails were expensive for what you get but had a fun theme to them. Entertainment is definitely what it is about here. A rodeo bull took centre stage on a Monday night, where a waitress in hotpants showed us how to go for it! The design was fun and the idea was cool but the execution of this venue leaves some space for improvement. Go here only for drinks, and if you are/ want to get wasted! "

  • "I love Steam and Rye, I do come here often, however I think it would be a lot better if they did a happy hour! Cocktails are not cheap, and even though they have live music playing who were awesome, I still think it was a tad pricey. The food was delicious but not warm enough. I will be coming back here for Bronco nights, however will be eating elsewhere to save the pennies! "

  • "The food at Steam & Rye is pretty basic. I had the crab cake which was nice. I also had a couple of cocktails. The first was very weak and the second very strong. The stronger one actually tasted awful. About 5 minutes after I left I received a call frome someone at the restaurant who screamed 'This is Steam and Rye. You left without paying' I said I had paid. The girl didn't reply but muttered to someone else, she accused me of not paying again. I said I had paid and told her the amount. She spoke to someone else again - without saying a word to me. Then said 'you must have paid the wrong waitress' I asked if she was going to apologise for accusing me of stealing - she hung up on me! Avoid this restaurant, it was overpriced with rude staff"

  • "Having walked in and faced a group of people who gave me a look which could not be described as welcoming, I was surprised to find out they worked there. I was shown to my table and waited for a friend who was running late. I sat and watched several groups arrive after me who were served drinks and menus before I had to ask someone (who did not smile once and looked like a chat with a career adviser would not go amiss) if a glass of water could be provided. That said once my friend arrived the drink, crowd and food were a delight with the live music a welcome addition. I would go again but would hope for some service with a smile. "

  • "Great food, brilliant menu. Not really the ambience we'd have liked for a team lunch but it's really more of an evening venue so to be expected."

  • "The 3 dancers are amazing - i have been back twice me and the girls had a great night out! food was good as always.. only thing i would say this time was we sat on the downstairs section and had a 9pm dinner. so as it was quite late a lot of people there were a little drunk and kept asking to put glasses on our table or bags down by us... this was drunk people thought though not the resturant. so maybe when booking a late friday table book on upstairs if free or in the booths. overall been back a few times and would go back even more!"
    dined on 02/05/2014
  • "I went to Steam and Rye with a group of work colleagues. The food and cocktails were fantastic, really tasty and filling! The service was good but distracted - we were sat with empty drinks for a while. The venue is great fun however the music was incredibly loud, to the point where we were shouting at one another to be heard. A fantastic guitarist/singer played later in the evening and he was incredible but we were then on a Tuesday and, given the location, I would have thought most of the people there would have been post-work or meetings in which case pumping music isn't necessary. I've been on a Friday before, on a night out with girlfriends, and I absolutely loved it. So party venue not one for a catch-up/work dinner."
    dined on 29/04/2014
  • "Very quiet once the after work drinks crowd had left by 7:30ish- but i guess it was a Tuesday night. All four of us had the all you can eat shrimp/ribs - great value and the food was delicious!"

  • "First time to steam and rye as a recommendation from a friend. Not what I expected definitely not a good place to dine felt like I was in the middle of a nightclub eating dinner. Definitely will not be recommending this place as somewhere to go for dinner. "

  • "It was a Tuesday night so I probably can't give this place it's due - food was what you'd expect Didn't have any coctails but wow - they go all out!"
    dined on 22/04/2014
  • "This is the second time I have been here and unfortunately I'm not sure I'll be back unless its purely for drinks later in the evening. When we arrived for our reservation at 8:30pm the place was absolutely packed with over 50% of the people so drunk they could hardly stand up- the kind of scenes you would expect at around 1am in a club not a place that praises itself on being"classy" and upmarket. Not the kind of place you want to be eating in. The service really needs to improve, a few of the staff are really nice and friendly but then there a more than a few that aren't and they are really quite rude and patronising. Its a shame as I had high hopes for this place but save your money and go elsewhere. "

  • "We went here for lunch. Waited for over an hour for food to turn up and we were told it would be there shortly. It didnt ever turn up and all other tables around us had been served and were eating! We then left without lunch and had to go and buy a sandwich! Worst lunch experience ever."
