A word from Steam and Rye

Steam and Rye, a late night Americana themed bar and restaurant, situated in the heart of the City opened to critical acclaim in November 2013. The menu features classic American crab-shack cuisine including USDA Grain-fed beef from Greater Omaha, BBQ spare ribs & tender, beautifully flavoured steaks cooked on the Josper Grill. Additionally, favourites such as crab cake, Lobster by the pound, and Smoked Pulled Pork, have attracted diners from far and wide.
The food is all prepared fresh on site, by a team led by celebrated chef Andrew McLeish (of Michelin starred Chapter One, Kent).
The 70 capacity restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on weekdays and for dinner from 6pm on Saturdays. All you can eat Ribs&Shrimp every Monday&Tuesday!!

Diner Reviews
  • "I couldn't believe my eyes! It's really quite hard to get a table here - especially if you are a larger group. I managed to get a 6.30pm table for 2 on a Thursday at short notice and you very definitely only get 2 hours. All the tables and bar spaces were fully booked. That said - the food was quite good with generous proportion sizes. The wine list was good and although the tables were close together the size of the tables was also generous and the seats very comfy."

  • "Went on a Monday after work for dinner! Nice place with very good service! A friend had recommended to try ribs and shrimps all you can eat and indeed it was very good!!! Interesting coctails!!! Would like to go to one of the events with music!!!"

  • "More of a hen do/birthday celebrations place on a Saturday evening."

  • "Surprisingly a very fun venue on a thursday evening after work, felt like a saturday night.. If it was just based on the food, I would rate this place quite poor BUT Excellent band performing an impressive selection of live music (the old school garage set was my favourite), novelty cocktails in oil cans and popcorn boxes, fun-filled professional crowd, attentive and friendly staff and the unique venue is what sets this place apart from the rest. Go for drinks & starters and you're onto a good night any day of the week"

  • "Great value, great food, slow bring them out, speed up that services waiting 5-10 minutes between each serving of ribs not quite what you want! Services was great, ribs were amazing."

  • "When we arrived at the restaurant, we found the place to be very smelly and not really catering for Dinner reservations. music very loud, and ambiance very lack off. possible not returning, and not really value for money,"

  • "The steak was fatty and service poor, the football was on all around and we were surrounding by lads watching whilst we tried to enjoy a meal. This restauraunt has an identity crisis and does not match its description. If i wanted to listen to brit pop and drink with boozey football fans it would have been a wonderful experience. unsatisfied with our food and service we paid the extortionate bill and left."

  • "Food and drinks were amazing however we went on a Friday night and it was ridiculous! It was so busy that where we were sat down to eat had people crowded round drinking - people were leaning on the backs of our chairs and one person even spilt there drink on us as we ate"

  • "Great classics to bump along to while eating your Americanised grub. The cornbread was so tasty, as well as the giant sundae. We were super lucky and got complimentary drinks in a dino-head! All in all, was a great Monday night - just wished we'd come another night as they do live music then! "

  • "I had heard alot about this place and was looking forward to going. Food was average, very US and meat heavy but the mushroom mac n cheese was not amazing. The cocktails were expensive for what you get but had a fun theme to them. Entertainment is definitely what it is about here. A rodeo bull took centre stage on a Monday night, where a waitress in hotpants showed us how to go for it! The design was fun and the idea was cool but the execution of this venue leaves some space for improvement. Go here only for drinks, and if you are/ want to get wasted! "

  • "I love Steam and Rye, I do come here often, however I think it would be a lot better if they did a happy hour! Cocktails are not cheap, and even though they have live music playing who were awesome, I still think it was a tad pricey. The food was delicious but not warm enough. I will be coming back here for Bronco nights, however will be eating elsewhere to save the pennies! "

  • "The food at Steam & Rye is pretty basic. I had the crab cake which was nice. I also had a couple of cocktails. The first was very weak and the second very strong. The stronger one actually tasted awful. About 5 minutes after I left I received a call frome someone at the restaurant who screamed 'This is Steam and Rye. You left without paying' I said I had paid. The girl didn't reply but muttered to someone else, she accused me of not paying again. I said I had paid and told her the amount. She spoke to someone else again - without saying a word to me. Then said 'you must have paid the wrong waitress' I asked if she was going to apologise for accusing me of stealing - she hung up on me! Avoid this restaurant, it was overpriced with rude staff"

  • "Having walked in and faced a group of people who gave me a look which could not be described as welcoming, I was surprised to find out they worked there. I was shown to my table and waited for a friend who was running late. I sat and watched several groups arrive after me who were served drinks and menus before I had to ask someone (who did not smile once and looked like a chat with a career adviser would not go amiss) if a glass of water could be provided. That said once my friend arrived the drink, crowd and food were a delight with the live music a welcome addition. I would go again but would hope for some service with a smile. "

  • "Great food, brilliant menu. Not really the ambience we'd have liked for a team lunch but it's really more of an evening venue so to be expected."

  • "The 3 dancers are amazing - i have been back twice me and the girls had a great night out! food was good as always.. only thing i would say this time was we sat on the downstairs section and had a 9pm dinner. so as it was quite late a lot of people there were a little drunk and kept asking to put glasses on our table or bags down by us... this was drunk people thought though not the resturant. so maybe when booking a late friday table book on upstairs if free or in the booths. overall been back a few times and would go back even more!"

  • "I went to Steam and Rye with a group of work colleagues. The food and cocktails were fantastic, really tasty and filling! The service was good but distracted - we were sat with empty drinks for a while. The venue is great fun however the music was incredibly loud, to the point where we were shouting at one another to be heard. A fantastic guitarist/singer played later in the evening and he was incredible but we were then on a Tuesday and, given the location, I would have thought most of the people there would have been post-work or meetings in which case pumping music isn't necessary. I've been on a Friday before, on a night out with girlfriends, and I absolutely loved it. So party venue not one for a catch-up/work dinner."
    dined on 29/04/2014
  • "Very quiet once the after work drinks crowd had left by 7:30ish- but i guess it was a Tuesday night. All four of us had the all you can eat shrimp/ribs - great value and the food was delicious!"

  • "First time to steam and rye as a recommendation from a friend. Not what I expected definitely not a good place to dine felt like I was in the middle of a nightclub eating dinner. Definitely will not be recommending this place as somewhere to go for dinner. "
    dined on 25/04/2014
  • "It was a Tuesday night so I probably can't give this place it's due - food was what you'd expect Didn't have any coctails but wow - they go all out!"
    dined on 22/04/2014
  • "This is the second time I have been here and unfortunately I'm not sure I'll be back unless its purely for drinks later in the evening. When we arrived for our reservation at 8:30pm the place was absolutely packed with over 50% of the people so drunk they could hardly stand up- the kind of scenes you would expect at around 1am in a club not a place that praises itself on being"classy" and upmarket. Not the kind of place you want to be eating in. The service really needs to improve, a few of the staff are really nice and friendly but then there a more than a few that aren't and they are really quite rude and patronising. Its a shame as I had high hopes for this place but save your money and go elsewhere. "
    dined on 17/04/2014
  • "We went here for lunch. Waited for over an hour for food to turn up and we were told it would be there shortly. It didnt ever turn up and all other tables around us had been served and were eating! We then left without lunch and had to go and buy a sandwich! Worst lunch experience ever."
    dined on 15/04/2014
  • "We walked out after 90 minutes as we hadn't received our food. I have never left a restaurant before for that reason and we weren't the only table to do so. We didn't even receive the bread that we asked for whilst we were waiting! Please do not waste your lunchtime by going there and certainly do not take brokers/underwriters/clients.."
    dined on 15/04/2014
  • "I like the concept and I expect this is a good party place for after work. Food is definitely not worth the price. Don't bother eating, just drink."
    dined on 14/04/2014
  • "Food was very poor, I had squied tempura and it was greasy and heavy. I found the food to be overpriced for what it was."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "Thursday night the venue is packed to the rafters of young, rowdy drinkers not the atmosphere I chose to eat in had I known this before we went I wouldn't have booked. Every 10 minutes someone is ordering a round of drinks that require special fanfare of music and a troop of staff carrying it over in a shark or alligator head, amusing the first two times then you're pretty much over it. There may have been more of a restaurant upstairs, we never looked but the seating arrangement they have in the main room is like a side thought, just a bar with food. Having said this the food was really lovely and fairly priced and the staff pleasant and attentive. Over all Id only come back to eat ... but I don't like to eat in this environment aargh!"
    dined on 10/04/2014
  • "Staff were rude, service was awful. We where watched like hawks which made us uncomfortable. Our server dropped my friends drink all over the table and did not even apologise, clean it up nor offer to replace her cocktail which was now half full!! We refused to pay service change for all these reasons, the second we had finished eating we were pounced on and asked if we wanted more drinks and was basically told if not we were to leave!! My lobster roll tasted very fishy and like prawn which indicates it was not fresh ... Was it worth 13 or so £ .... No!"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "We had been enticed by the website and appeal of something a bit different. The venue was smaller than we had imagined, it was very noisy and the general bar area encroaches onto the dining area - especially as we were then on a Friday evening. It was very busy, and it took a while after our booked time to get us to a table. However, the service was excellent and the staff were very very courteous and friendly. The cocktails were great (but pricey) with great themes to them - lots of fun. The food was middling though."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "Loved Steam and Rye cocktails and food. Cocktails worth the money as they were really strong but tasted good. Was not happy we was put on a table that was roped off rather than in the restaurant area. Was catching up with 2 other friends and we could hardly hear each other speak. As our table was roped off from the main drinking area. We had to ask a group of really drunk men to stop leaning over the rope and practically standing on top of us whilst eating. I would like to visit Steam and Rye again and ask to be seated in the booth area's up the back."
    dined on 27/03/2014
  • "Great all you can eat ribs, food was good, service was a little slow. quite expensive but will definitely go again."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "I had high expectations for this restaurant but I found it very disappointing. We were first of all led up to the upstairs dining room which is quite and you are unable to watch the shows that they put on downstairs. I requested to be moved down and the manager kindly did so. The service was good and attentive, yet the whole restaurant just seemed random, they layout etc. The shows didn't last long and the band packed up at c.10:30pm and the atmosphere was not that great. I did go on a saturday evening and expected a lot more - maybe it's more lively on a weekday? We eventually left looking to go somewhere with a bit more atmosphere. The food was OK, I wouldn't go back for the food however, the cocktails were delicious!"

  • "This was my second time (on a wednesday rather than a thursday). The food is still great and the cocktails are still entertaining, but there were no dancing girls (only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I think this information should be on their website). On the flip side, they still had live music, but it was a little quieter, enough that we could all talk at the table more easily. On this particular occasion i preferred that... its still like eating in a nightclub though, with the smoke machine going off. Apparently there is a more civilised area downstairs, but then if you want civilised go to B%deans zzz. Overall, its still a great with a group of friends.....just not on a date (as some poor people have decided to do)"

  • "Sticky glasses, carpeted floors and drinkers on high tables standing over diners. American diner with very expensive food & drink, noisy and uncomfortable. Friendly Irish waitress. Probably good for meeting people late evening if that's what you're after. Live music starts early at 8pm. Not somewhere to go for an intimate dinner for two!"
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "Went there on a Monday afternoon. The restaurant was reasonably busy but there was capacity for a lot more people. There were a lot of staff, who seemed reasonably attentive. Food was excellent and the ambiance was good. Very pleasant for a reasonably nice lunch. Not too much to moan about."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "The cocktails at steam and rye where up their with the best in London! Not only because of the great taste but also because of the quirky glasses and toppings that made each cocktail unique. I would recommend the Mississippi cocktail that comes on fire. The decor was beautiful, decked out to imitate new yorks grand central station, including train carriages and tv screens of scenery. We dined on a Saturday at 7.30pm and it had some empty tables. The tables where next to the bar area which had groups of people just drinking - I would recommend this experience. The live band was amazing and made our night. The food let it down - e.g burnt bun on the burger and we were told half the menu was out of stock. Expected more for the price."
