A word from Mao Tai
Mao Tai has closed and Takahashi is opening. After 29 years of great times and wonderful experiences I have decided to follow my dreams and evolve Mao Tai. Takahasi is a concept developed by myself and Nobuisha Takahashi. Taka, was formally trained in Toyko for 10 years and was an ex Nobu head sushi chef both in London and Cape Town. Takahashi will be a vibrant and contemporary restaurant serving Japanese food. It will be a place to meet and enjoy sharing plates of delicious and beautifully prepared food from tempura to aromatic grilled meats, fish and vegetables from our new Robata charcoal grill to mouth watering sushi and sashimi freshly prepared at the sushi bar where you can sit, eat and watch Taka and his fellow sushi chefs at work. I also want to reassure everyone that I am retaining our very popular cocktail bar Takahashi will be opening at the end of may. For further updates follow us on the Mao Tai facebook page Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "On the spur of the moment three of us decided to go to Mao Tai on Saturday night. I think we were lucky to get a reservation at short notice as the restaurant was half full when we arrived and half an hour later it was full including a large group of 24. I don't know if they were short on staff on the night but it was a bit thin and we had to ask for our wine to be refilled and the main course took quite a while to come. Our waiter was very pleasant, but worked off his feet. The food was delicious and a very high standard. The one downside is the noise level. I don't know how ore than four people could actuall hear a conversation. It was noisey when it was half full and much worse when full. I will try and go back at an earlier time."

  • "a bit disappointed by the food this time but still a great evening"

  • "don't even think about ordering the green fish balls curry. unidentifiable chewy lumps in a glutinous (msg?) sauce bearing no resemblance to any form of curry. The tempura jumbo prawns were excellent."

  • "What a pleasure, every time we eat at Mao Tai I find something delicious on the menu that I haven’t tried before, last night I tried the salmon tataki wow it was amazing and my girlfriend and I shared the tuna tartare it had a mellow spice, and the tuna was exquisite very fresh and tasty. As always we started with cocktails and met the new bartender Aaron who mixed us a perfect classic martini. We had great service, friendly and ever helpful."

  • "HUGE disappointment. CRAZY expensive..Food was poor, service also very poor. We spent over £240 !!!! on a dinner for 3 (3 starters, 3 main courses,1 side of broccoli ( which cost an absolute fortune...), 1 bottle of red wine( that arrived ice cold and we demanded wine at room temperature) Waitress spoke poor English and looked dumbfounded...---3 glasses of red wine and 2 glasses of Champagne and one glass of Kir Royal ( The barman made the worst Kir Royal I have ever had) he pored the Champagne into the glass first then pored a masses amount of Cassis in after.... The restaurant was almost empty but we had such poor service. The food was awful. We were soooo disappointed and we had spent all this money and had such a poor experience"

  • "Very tasty food, good selection of food and drinks. Didn't know much about the restaurant beforehand and it exceeded expectations. Definitely recommend it."

  • "I first went to Mao Tai about 20 years ago and decided on a re-visit as a special treat for my partner who had never been. The restaurant name could not be found anywhere on the exterior and service was appalling. Food was fortunately good enough to save the evening after a stressful first 45 minutes!"

  • "The food was good but there was no manager in the rsstaurant and every waiter does what he wants, when he wants and with no manner"

  • "An old "friend" still going strong! Reliable as always - never disappointing! Good food, excellent service. we will be back soon!"

  • "Brilliant modern oriental cuisine in good, lively atmosphere and setting. Great to arrive early and have a cocktail. Salt & pepper squid is superb."

  • "For a very special occasion, a birthday in this instance, Mao Tai is exceptional. The food, wine and Saki kept coming, the quality and presentation mouth watering, and the taste . . . just yummy. Service low key but attentive."

  • "My parents were in town so we (boyfriend and I) took them to Mao Tai. The food was exceptional, all dishes we had were really good. Nice touch with the 250ml carafes of wine for those who perhaps want a different drink from the others at the table. Some trouble getting cutlery for my parents who are not competent with chopsticks but this was a very minor issue which was resolved after asking a second time after the food arrived. Noticed as well this place has 5* food hygiene rating, which is good news for us with sensitive stomachs!"

  • "Nice cocktail list, menu and atmosphere. The cost is way too high however for what you get. The food was fine, but nothing to brag about. I'd much rather go for dim sum in China Town with better quality and half the price."

  • "Really enjoyed our meal at Mao Tai, it was my husbands birthday and we had never been to this restaurant previously, often walked passed we were interested to see what the food was like. When we arrived the restaurant was very quiet, not many customers. We sat down at the back of the restaurant and this was more intimate, we choose dim-sum and a few starters and 1 main with rice and we were very full, the broccoli was a mountain, we didn't get through it. We would go back again, but its for special occasions or a dim-sum lunch. Really enjoyed it"

  • "Had a wonderfull night! We did go on a Saturday night. Sat at the front of the restaurant/bar area. it is very lively and loud. The food was great. Excellent Dim Sum. Service could improve."

  • "Great Thai food, lively atmosphere and great cocktails and bar area. Really recommend for either dinner for two or a party booking."

  • "Had a nice dinner - as usual. I've been dining at Mao Tai for years now, since their old location in S Ken. Was a little bothered that the dim sum basket tasted like little rubber balls. The restaurant also ran out of ice cream for their main desert (chocolate fondant) - how do you run out of vanilla?"

  • "I absolutely love this place and have been a few times however my experience mid week was somewhat different to the weekends. We were greeted and shown to our table with menus and the waitor came back in 20 seconds later to take our drinks order and seemed quite impatient even though we had only sat down! We then decided on a wine but when asked, the waitor had taken the wrong name down. We then had to call for a waitor to come and take our food order 15 minutes later. I have only ever been to Mao Tao at weekends and everything about the place is exceptional so I was rather disappointed as I had made the recommendation for dinner. Leaving aside the service, the food was just as good as ever - crispy pork belly being an absolute favourite!"

  • "We used to live around the corner from this restaurant and went there regularly as the food was excellent. There has been something of a decline over the last few years. Its still a very smart place and congenial in every respect but the food is not as good as it used to be. We liked some of the dishes but about half disappointed. It's not cheap (at least for a Chinese restaurant) but we don't mind paying for something very good - and it wasn't, at least some dishes failed. In particular the Pork and Ginger Dumplings were dry and uninteresting. The crispy beef had nearly no beef in it, just batter. On the other hand the Teriyaki Chicken was delicious and so were the Sui Mai."

  • "My friend and I dined here on Sunday night. Despite being the only two customers in the restaurant our waiters could not have been less attentive or interested in us. For the first time in my life I asked them to remove the service charge from our bill. The food was fine but terribly expensive for what you get. Will not be returning."

  • "I was very disappointed after having supper at Mao Tai as had heard positive reviews from a couple of people. It was very expensive and the food wan't good enough to match the price tag. It was well presented but very small portions and tasted decidedly average. Over hyped with little substance."
    dined on 03/08/2013
  • "We've been going to this restaurant for 25 years - back when they used to have these great, cheeky but very efficient Chinese guys dressed as city bankers! Now it's very cool & contemporary with great interior design & delicious food. But it's lost it's charm on the way. The staff are mostly good, though 2 waiters forgot or got the orders wrong for both us & the table beside us. The menu has also changed - sounding far more anglicised ie crispy chilli beef was called "crispy Scottish beef with chilli & carrots". And they no longer serve the delicious mango sauce they used to serve with starters/prawn crackers. Sadly For me, it just felt like we'd spent a fortune on a rather mediocre experience. BUT, the food is good!"

  • "I booked a table at Mao Tai on a friend's recommendation for my mother's birthday and it was worth it! We've had the razor clams and the sea bass, which were amazing. Plus, while booking online, I notified that it was for a special occasion so the waitress brought us a nice chocolate fondant with a little candle at the end of the dinner :) I appreciated a lot, and I wish to come back there soon."

  • "As always, excellent food, great cocktails, fabulous atmosphere."

  • "I had dinner with my boyfriend at Mao Tai. It was great fun - the atmosphere is lovely and it's a very pretty and glamorous restaurant inside and the food was absolutely delicious. It's a little on the pricey side but perfect for a special occasion. I really look forward to returning."
    dined on 23/05/2012
  • "The service, food and atmosphere were all high quality. The only slight dissapointment was that the Peking duck rolls were deep fried instead of the usual wrapped in soft pancakes. But for a fairly light dim sum selection for 2 with a carafe of wine, £53 seemed a bit expensive for a restaurant in Parsons Green."
    dined on 28/03/2013
  • "Mao Tai was really let down by the service as most of the food was delicious (the duck with wasabi in particular was excellent). The barman was gave us great service but when we moved into the restaurant it went down hill - we found it difficult to catch anyone's attention despite the restaurant only being half full and they did not top up our wine once. Having booked it for a special occasion I was disappointed that - for what looked like a smart restaurant - the service did not match up."
    dined on 21/03/2013
  • "Had a lovely night out at Mao Tai... initially met with indifference when requesting a table move but the service improved there after... The food is delicious an interesting twist on some of the traditional dishes and/or the way it is served. Really enjoyed starter and main... fill up on these and enjoy... do not save room for dessert... the desert was very disappointing almost as though they were created as an after thought."

  • "Expensive but always a great meal. Bar is also a very nice place to meet just for a drink."
    dined on 09/03/2013
  • "Two of us headed to Mao Tai, as I have an allergy to MSG and Mao Tai does not use MSG in any of their cooking. We had a great night - starting in the bar with a cocktail each before moving through to the restuarant for dinner and desert. Whilst some of the menu item are pricey, you can chose ones that are not i.e. sweat and sour pork main £12.50. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the service was attentive and friendly. I would recommend it and will be back."

  • "We moved from Fulham a few years ago but before that we wee regulars at Mao Tai. Having not been for a few years, we were pleased to see that although the menu has been updated and revamped, the high standards we had come to expect were being maintained. Highly recommend the pork and ginger dumplings and the beef with black beans."

  • "I wanted to take my wife out for our anniversary and wanted to have Singaporean cuisine. Went to Mao Tai and loved every minute of it. We have sea food which was extremely tasty. Ambience and service was spot on! Well recommended!"
    dined on 24/01/2013
  • "Mao Tai - we will return! We went for new years eve dinner (have a child so had to be home for 10pm as babysitter was going out!) lovely meal. It is expensive but delicious. Only negative is that the waitress didn't really help us with our food choice - we ordered WAY too much which obviously cost more - it would have been good to have some tips."
