Diner Reviews
  • "excellent value lunch menu with good choice of courses and generous portions"
    dined on 22/07/2014
  • "I have eaten at the Ambrette several times and each time the quality has never varied. The staff are always friendly and informative and the food a voyage of discovery. Delicate flavours mingle with subtle spices to make each meal a pleasure. I wouldn't hestitate to recommend it, even to those who are not lovers of curry or spiced food."

  • "Having taken our guest to the Ambrette once, she requested a return the following Sunday and we were happy to oblige. Not disappointed. Fantastic food, attentive service which was completely unobtrusive and very good value for money. Well recommended."

  • "The food was absolutely delicious, Indian with a modern twist, and we really appreciated all the complimentary titbits. Staff very friendly and attentive too. A lovely surprise!"

  • "The Ambrette looks very unassuming from the outside and nothing special on the inside which might mean it's overlooked. This really is a shame because this restaurant is a little gem, and was the highlight of our 3 days in Margate. The service was outstanding - attentive but not over the top. Matt and his colleague were fantastic. The food was wonderful. Nice little touches - a very tasty amuse-bouche, and a great fruity granita - loved the popping candy! All three courses were amazing but the trio of desserts was heaven on a plate! We ate on a Thursday night - the restaurant wasn't full and it deserved to be - we were totally impressed. Will definitely be back next time we are in Margate to try the tasting menu."

  • "We have eaten at the Ambrette in Rye before. When we wanted to take our daughter and her partner for lunch on Sunday, we were very keen to try the Ambrette in Margate near to where she lives. The standard of the food in Margate is every bit as good as Rye, and we were very pleased with the interesting venue, the pleasant and efficient service and the amazing food. My Kentish mutton was so good I did not want the meal to finish! The tastes and spices were expertly cooked, and the portion sizes just right, so that a three course meal left us satisfied but not overstuffed."

  • "The food never disappoints here. Always delicious and tantalizing flavours."

  • "Having experienced dining at this stylish restaurant in winter and summer it was a pleasure to note that the menu reflects the season and the location by using fresh, locally sourced products. Highly recommended on the current menu are the mutton and duck main dishes and the okra side dish is delicious. Do not go here expecting chicken tikka masala or vindaloo, the spicing is subtle and skillful."

  • "Our meal at the Ambrette was outstanding both in taste and in presenation. Excellent service and a nice calm atmosphere. I have never had such interesting Indian food and wouldnt hesitate to recommend it."

  • "first visit - will definitely be returning food amazing [tried the soft shell crab for the 1st time WOW] the trio of desserts were amazing we were made to feel very special by the attentiveness of the staff sorry for using amazing more than once but it was amazing"

  • "The food was very different from that expected at an Indian restaurant and much more creative and interesting. Every moutful was a medley of different and interesting flavours and there was some lovely additions in between courses. The actual menu seems at first glance to be limited, but in reality there are dishes available for each course that should ensure that most diners will find something to appeal to them, The service was superbly attentive but not in any way intrusive. I went with my wife and it is true to say that one of the main reasons for us going to Margate was this restaurant."

  • "The Ambrette never fails to impress and this time we were delighted with the combination of flavours in all the food. The service was impeccable."
    dined on 23/06/2014
  • "Another great meal at The Ambrette. Highlights were the 'pre-starter', the dosai starter and the also amazing. chocolate samosas. (Husband said his creme brulee was a bit more set than last time and therefore not so good, but that was a minor detail.) Presentation top class. Service was superb, especially with regards to checking about alternatives for our nut-allergic son. Presents from the chef mean no long pauses between courses, but two of us found the spicy veg soup too hot and not very palate-cleansing. Didn't matter as our mains soon arrived and were great."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Amazing Indian food not like normal English Indian. A Michelin star experience for a quarter of the price. Totally recommend it."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Wonderful food and excellent service. I loved the grilled mutton and my wife talked about her amazing dessert for two days afterwards!"
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "Slightly disappointed on this my second visit, having raved about the place last time. Went with a party of 7 for my birthday and was rather disappointed in the place this time. Portions were smaller, but the same price. Waiters/waitresses seemed less knowledgeable about the dishes, uncertain maybe. The atmosphere seemed different, know where near as nice as last time, 6 months ago. Would I recommend and rave about it this time, probably not. Will I go there again, maybe, but not by my choice!"

  • "We had a great experience at the Amaretto . The menu was extremely interesting and made choosing quite difficult! When the starters were brought out everyone at the table was really impressed by the presentation and quality of what they ate. The Mains didn't disappoint either the presentation and technique were superb, seems like all the meat we ate was from the sous vide as it was perfectly cooked and had retained all its moisture. Also we were given a lot of small tasters in between the courses which was a lovely touch. We finished with a beautiful selection of desserts and then left very happy with a bill of £150 for food and a couple 0f drinks for 4 people which for what we got was great value. Would definitely go back."

  • "I usually eat at Ambrette at lunchtime, as the privilege card makes it possible for me to enjoy the utterly amazing food on offer. I can only do evening meals as as special treat! That said, what a great afternoon we had, wandering around Margate, seeing Mondrian at Turner contemporary, watching the world from a deckchair, and then strolling up to Ambrette to be enchanted by the flavours, and unusual combinations of local foods. Heartily recommended!"

  • "This restaurant is going from strength to strength. Their latest spring time luncheon menu is absolutely delicious and such good value for menu especially if you have a seniors' privilege card. Definitely my favourite restaurant."

  • "Cold food , small portions. Totally over rated. Big disappointment "

  • "Went with my friend and his son for dinner to celebrate my 50th birthday. I had the wood pigeon for a starter, which was a bit tough but still tasted great. For the main I had the sea bream which was perfect and a decent size. The dessert was a lemon posset with blood orange caviar which was a delight (especially the posset). We were also served little extras like nettle soup, mango and lychee juice, and a stunning granita with popping candy. The prices were about the same as I paid in a run of the mill tex/mex chain restaurant the week before."
    dined on 30/05/2014
  • "The place is quite small but this makes for a good ambience. There are only a few parking spaces at the front which were full, so it was a case of searching around to find somewhere to leave the car. We walked in to a warm greeting, seated at our table and recieved good service all evening. We were brought a taster, a soup dish and palet cleanser throughout the meal, nice idea but nettle soup wasn't my favourite. Starter of pigeon had loads of flavours that didn't go together and just left a nasty anecede flavour. Ordered duck and venison for main - nice ideas with both dishes but over complicated flavours again. Too many flavours on the plate and neither dish worked at all. Cooked okay though. It is quirky, but it isn't fine dining."

  • "Wonderful food - interesting and tasty. Modern Indian with Kent inflections! Very attentive service. Decor is tired but that doesn't really matter"
    dined on 24/05/2014
  • "We have been to ths restaurant three times now, once for dinner a al carte, once for a special tasting menu and now for lunch. Each time we have experienced outstanding food and service. I have just made my next booking having just returned from the restaurant!"
    dined on 23/05/2014
  • "Only three covers all evening, but no venison left. Very disappointing."
    dined on 22/05/2014
  • "This was our first time at the Ambrette and we will happily go again. The food was very tasty, imaginative and well presented. The service was efficient but I think could have been improved. For example, my jacket was not taken by the waiter. I was horrified to find a hair in my dessert but the waiter returned it to the kitchen and gave me a new dish and also added a free dessert on the plate. We were given a lovely free dessert with 'happy anniversary' written on the plate. The decoration inside the Ambrette does not match the quality or image of the food presented. Inside it does have the look of a run of the mill Indian restaurant unfortunately. In summary, great food but interior decoration needs updating. "

  • "Our food was outstanding and because of Ambrette's privilege card I was able to treat my mother to the most excellent food at a price I could afford. Many thanks for that and the excellent considerate service."
    dined on 20/05/2014
  • "As ever, the food was excellent. We arrived promptly for lunch, but it was almost an hour and a half before we finished our dessert, and we only had the regular lunch menu. We did get an apology about a delay in the kitchen, but couldn't see any reason for it as it wasn't that busy on the day. However, it won't stop us going again."
    dined on 20/05/2014
  • "Food is amazing at The Ambrette, such delicate spiced food you just want to keep going back however the restaurant in Margate really could do with a décor upgrade as it is rather shabby. Please do not let that stop you going as the food and staff are wonderful."
    dined on 17/05/2014
  • "I took three friends to lunch at The Ambrette last Thursday. They were all clearly impressed; I already knew how good it would be having already visited several times. The senior lunchtime concession is particularly good value; it is obviously a successful venture for the restaurant for it was almost completely full of appreciative diners. I will go again."

  • "Booked for the Spring Tasting menu...6 courses of various plates ...all explained and tasting superb."
    dined on 08/05/2014
  • "Wow this was our second visit, thought the food we ate on our first visit couldn't get better but it was amazing, I will definitely be back to try the other dished on the menu. It is so clever how they spice the food and you can taste every spice without it blowing the roof of your off. The ambience and service is very good, it was very busy but we didn't wait too long for our food and the little canapes given between meals were excellent. Would thoroughly recommend."
    dined on 04/05/2014
  • "We booked for Sunday lunch and the meal surpassed our expectations. Delicious harmony of flavours, love the fact that all food is locally sourced. My husband had the pork loin and I had the clarisse. Both were delicious. Portions were just right, and it was lovely to have the occasional amuse-bouche between courses to get different tastes. Service was great and the waiter even recalled my name from my email, even though we hadn't met before. The restaurant was full of locals enjoying Sunday lunch, a testament to the quality and popularity of this venue."
    dined on 04/05/2014
  • "This was our first visit but it wont be our last. The food was excellent and the service was just as good. Lots of little surprise extras throughout the evening. The Fish and the mutton steak were especially good."
    dined on 02/05/2014
  • "Delicious food, attentive service but the decor lets it down"
    dined on 01/05/2014
  • "Our third time eating here and as good as ever. The subtle spicing of each dish makes dining here an explosion of tastes. The friends whom we took with us were very impressed and when theory left were planning their next visit and who they would take with them. All round a very successful lunch-time meal and extremely good value."
    dined on 01/05/2014
  • "We have eaten here on so many occasions and the food is always beautifully presented, delicious and great value for money. It was very quiet on our visit but the service was as attentive as the times we have visited when it was extremely busy."

  • "Lovely delicate and delicious meal with excellent service and nice extras!"
    dined on 26/04/2014
  • "We went straight to the Ambrette from the train station kicking off a weekend in Thanet, and I'm hugely glad we did. The food was fantastic, freshly prepared, delicately flavoured and generous in portion. The unexpected addition of amuse bouche was great and it was impossible to resist a dessert (chocolate filled samosas!). Wine was exceedingly reasonably priced and the staff friendly and efficient. If you were in Margate just go (and make sure you go to the Tartar Frigate in Broadstairs too!!)."
