A word from The Archduke
Set on the South Bank, moments from world-famous London attractions like the IMAX, London Eye and Royal Festival Hall, The Archduke restaurant and wine bar is a local landmark in itself, set in to the old railway arches surrounding Waterloo Station. The first London restaurant to open in this area, The Archduke has gone through several incarnations since 1979 but is still as fresh as ever with sleek, simple furniture set against the old bare brick walls and contemporary glass frontage. Jazz music gently floats through speakers, performed six nights a week live in the bar, as diners indulge in comforting modern European cuisine including excellent steaks (it’s owned by the steakhouse Black and Blue group) and simple roast chicken served with your choice of sides dishes. The view of the London Eye from the terrace is spectacular and worth lingering over. Continued

  • "We had passed this place many times en route to concerts and theatre and finally decided to give it a try. I had a superb bun-less burger with excellent side salad substitute. My husband's Seabass was good value for London at £15. Pleasant service and cool atmosphere enhanced by the jazz."

  • "I dined at The Archduke with friends, celebrating a birthday. Wonderful steak, competitively priced, great music - we had a most excellent time."

  • "I met up with friends and wanted a restaurant near Waterloo. The Archduke is useful and we chose the pre-theatre menu which was good value. The choice was limited but the food was well cooked and we enjoyed it. The Archduke can be noisy later on when the live jazz starts but it all adds to the atmosphere. Beware the optional 12.5% service charge which is included in the bill. If you want to decide yourself how much you are going to tip then look at the bottom of the bill for the total less service charge!"

  • "The Archduke is a great restaurant and bar. Good to meet friends after work or go with your other half. Quick service and good food in a cool setting. Nice!"

  • "The food and service here is always good but it is the atmopshere and "buzz" which makes it special"

  • "I've been to the Archduke a lot and it's one of my reliable venues for an evening (or lunch, or drink...) but last week had my first disappointing experience there. I ordered the lamb cutlets, which took almost an hour to appear - they arrived after my friend had received and eaten her chicken, and were not worth the wait - dry and tasteless, on some wilted french beans. Our waiter was doing his best to chivvy up the kitchen, and brought extra chips and looked after us very well, but it was annoying nonetheless. I'll give them another go, but with less confidence now!"

  • "The warm ambience and attentive (but not fussy) service alone are enough to recommend The Archduke to anyone. The fact that they serve the best martinis in London (far better and cheaper than those at Skylon around the corner) makes it a must-visit."

  • "Great location so you might get tempted. Don't. The food is so so but the service is horrendous. From extremely poor welcome to poor waiting. And who puts carpet on the floor in a restaurant?"
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "I was very surprised at the quality of the food and service here after booking on a whim as going to the BMI cinema that night and quickly finding somewhere to eat. Nice venue, really nice food and good service. Only annoying thing would be the sound of the train going overhead every few minutes... but you get used to it. Great music too."

  • "Went to the Archduke for a family get-together (party of 7). Received a very warm welcome, and the restaurant was buzzing at 6pm on Friday evening. Good food, reasonably priced (especially the set menu) and friendly service. After the meal we stayed chatting at the table until 8:45, with no pressure to leave despite the restaurant being very busy."

  • "Some pleasant jazz when we ate with an old colleague here. Food was good: duck was succulent, smoked haddock full of flavour & the friend's steak done to perfection. Which makes me feel that the chef, kitchen staff, pianist and singer should all have a word with the waitresses, who managed to spoil a pleasant evening. They cracked not one smile all evening, made mistakes, and actually cleared away plates whilst two out of three of us were still eating. A cheese platter for two - i.e. to share, at £10, appeared as two of the same [a waitress with no notebook is never a good sign]. And yes, she tried to clear that as I was eating, too......"

  • "The Archduke provides predictable good value for a pre-theatre meal. The standard of the food is high (confit duck was particularly good), and the staff are attentive and friendly and handle dietary requirements well. The set menu was unchanged from a previous visit several weeks ago; it would be good to introduce a few changes periodically."

  • "Had seen the restaurant on our last trip to London and decided to go online and look at menu and book. Had been to the theatre in the afternoon then went and had a couple of drinks before eating at 7.30 - really prompt service and very friendly waiting staff. Good selection to choose from and good prices. Would definitely go there again as the food was excellent as was the service!!"

  • "We really enjoyed our meal. The service of attentive and the atmosphere was just right for an evening meal with a nice drop of wine. Would recommend going here for a meal that I struggled to finish. Chet."

  • "Arriving early the staff directed me to a side table for a drink whilst waiting for my colleague to arrive. Wi-fi is freely available. The restaurant was buzzing but the staff were very attentive. Excellent pre-theatre food arrived in very short order. The menu included some very tasty dishes indeed. And the bill at the end was a pleasant surprise."

  • "Perfect spot for pre or post South Bank events, food or drinks. Friendly and prompt service, good menu and amazing value for money in the heart of London. Have been going here almost 20 years and consistently good."

  • "I've spent a few evenings in the Archdukes but haven't been back for years. We were lucky with a good table. It was a buzzy evening with good food and service. You can't beat it!"

  • "The vibe and the food at the Archduke have remained very consistent over the many years we have been going. We hadn't been for a while and were pleased to see that the sausage trio is still on the menu. No major surprises on the food front, reasonable food for the price and nice service. A good pre-event option for the Southbank venues."

  • "the archduke is a great little find that won't disappoint."

  • "We had the pre theatre menu, and though small portions, the food was good and it suited us well for a meal before the theatre."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "The shrimp appetiser I had was very good, and he steak I had had excellent flavour, but was a little tough. The service was prompt and efficient."

  • "I've eaten many times at the Archduke - they cater equally well for business groups or dining with friends, and it's a firm favourite of mine if wishing to eat near Waterloo station. Meals are well cooked and well presented. The set menu is good value. When busy, even if you have a table booked, allow time for the table to become available."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I booked a table for 4, prior to a concert in the Royal Festival Hall. We were shown straight to our table by the window. We opted for the set menu and found good choices for differing tastes and diets. Definitely will return."
    dined on 09/02/2014
  • "The food is good and good value. The live entertainment adds to the great atmosphere."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "The food was straightforward - fine but nothing particularly memorable. The staff were friendly and served us within a good time span. We were on the top floor by the window looking out at the world go by which was great, but the train track is directly above the building - above your head which is unnerving when you hear - and feel - it rumble over you."
    dined on 05/02/2014
  • "Great buzz, good service and excellent food. We used it following a rugby match at Twickenham, so it was convenient for Waterloo Station, (5 min walk). We were late arriving, but the staff made us comfortable, and sat us down without fuss. Lovely steaks, and fresh salad. Highly recommended."
    dined on 10/03/2013
  • "as The Archduke is now part of the Black & Blue group we were expecting the menu to be predominantly steaks but we were pleasantly surprised in the number of choices offered. The pre-theatre menu was excellent value"
    dined on 03/02/2014
  • "We ate here before going to the Southbank Centre for a concert. Perfect place to meet people and have a meal before going in. They also have some live Jazz which we missed so might come back on day to try it."
    dined on 24/11/2013
  • "We had relaxed dinner with old friends. It was un-rushed, so plenty of time for conversation, and the food was excellent. The location is great for trains from Waterloo station, so we would definitely book again."
    dined on 23/01/2014
  • "We have visited the restaurant on amany occaions before going to a concert a the Royal Festival Hall. We weere please dto see that there have been recent changes in the Lunch/Pre-Theatre menu. Some of the iterms had been there for a long time!"
    dined on 17/01/2014
  • "It took a while to choose from the great menu but no disappointment. The waiter was great asked as much as just want to inform you but not swamping you with details or pushing recommendation. The food was fantastic and did not have to wait much, were always taken care of. Recommend the place without a doubt."
    dined on 10/01/2014
  • "As usual, the food and ambience was great in the Archduke. Less usual was the sour-faced and seemingly uninterested waitress we had for the evening. we each had to repeat our orders to her, and she always seemed in a rush to leave... often before we'd finished ordering and we had to call her attention to the fact we had more to order, while she was walking away. Not a smile in sight either - very unusual for The Archduke as I've always had really friendly waiting staff on my previous visits"
    dined on 03/01/2014
  • "The Good Nice venue, very convenient for the South Bank. Food was very good (steak excellent) and the service (quality and speed) outstanding. 10% service charge included on the bill. The Not So Good Olives were terrible - Large, tasteless, mostly stone and indifferently presented. No sign of any Jazz, live or otherwise. Overall: Spoilt the ship for a ha'porth of tar - Not quite as special as I had hoped for, or it could have easily been."

  • "Have dined here many times. Always dependable and enjoyable! Good food, relaxing ambiance. Live jazz too!"

  • "I have been to the Arch Duke on a number of occasions over the years and I think that it is quite easy to understand the reason for coming back. The food is of a good quality as is the service and the location is ideal for Waterloo Station and the South Bank. I will be back at sometime in the near future."
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "We were delighted to have a table in the window upstairs so we could look out at the Festival Hall and people coming and going. We both chose fish - sea bass with turmeric potatoes and it was really well cooked - proof, we finished it all! As seems to be the case almost all English restaurants, it became extremely noisy as the evening wore on - why are the English so loud? Would definitely go back again. I had booked ages before and I think it's always busy so best make a reservation."
    dined on 16/12/2013
  • "A little tricky to find tucked away behind the Royal Festival Hall but well worth the hunt. The arched rooms and huge glass front gave the restaurant a lovely modern yet historic feel, nicely spaced out tables and pleasant view out over the fountain and real food market/chocolate market. We visited on a Sunday evening and they had live jazz downstairs in the bar which floated up to the first floor where we sat making the whole experience even better. The food was delicious and the meat cooked perfectly and a great wine selection which wont break the bank. We wanted a relaxed meal over a bottle of wine with no rushing, which is exactly what we had. The staff were attentive enough without being overbearing."

  • "On a busy Friday evening in the run up to Christmas, the Archduke was the only restaurant able to offer a table pre-concert in the vicinity of the Royal Festival Hall. The Archduke is perfectly situated and only a couple of minutes away from the venue. A bit noisy due to the trains running overhead but perfectly pleasant and enjoyable. Food was reasonably priced, especially the pretheatre menu, and of good quality. Nothing to fault really although the selection was a little limited. Service was fine but not particularily out of the ordinary (lacking charm and enthusiasm). Wine was a bit on the expensive side but plenty of bottles for about £25. All in all, we had a good couple of hours prior to heading off to the concert."
