A word from The Big Red Pizza & Bar
The Big Red Pizza and Bar on Deptford’s busy Church Street may well be London’s quirkiest venue, which in such a vibrant and creative city is saying a lot.

Situated in a red double decker bus, surrounded by a wonderful terrace and herb garden, the restaurant offers much more than a traditional Italian restaurant.

The Big Red’s fresh baked pizzas, dressed with basil from the ‘dining room’ planters is delicious, In addition the Big Red now makes it's own fresh pasta every day with a range of authentic pasta sauces, the like only to be found in Italy.

So not only will you enjoy fab food and delicious drinks on the Deptford Riviera; under a canopy, on the Riverside Terrace or within the bus itself, but you’ll be treated to art exhibitions, acoustic music, film screenings and other events .

Drinks range from Happy hour cocktails, to local meantime beer, fantastic organic coffee accompanied by homemade biscotti.

Diner Reviews
  • "My friends and myself had an excellent time at your venue. It's really good fun and as there were 8 of us we sat at the back of the bus. It really has the novelty value and the food and service were good too."

  • "Found this improbably located pizzeria on Top Table. Based around a big old double decker London bus it has the ambience of a pop up or something you might find at a festival. Food is trad pizzeria fare but done well. Pizzas are big thin crust affairs and as good as any I've had in the UK. Big Red is clearly aimed at families as there is a sand pit out back, however when our 7year old wandered between our table and another where friends were seated the manager demanded of me "Is someone supervising that child?" This leads me to my only gripe; some of the staff were rather less than friendly (others were delightful) despite our party all being polite and pleasant. Even so, I would certainly return and would recommend to others."

  • "We went in a group and it was lovely, Pizza had more favour than Pizza Express. It was a lovely sunny evening my only moan would be the hard benches to sit on a cushion would be great. I go again but would sit on the chairs."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Perfect pizza with quality toppings on a thin base. Certainly one of the best pizzas in London, just in the area. Relaxed and friendly service. The drinks menu could complement the pizzas though. Some more good Italian wines? Perhaps an Aperol spitz on the menu?"
    dined on 06/07/2014
  • "Honestly, I thought this place would be more of a gimick than a fine dining experience. I mean, it's not every day that you can eat your dinner inside an old bus. However, after I tasted the food I was more than pleasantly surprised and very happy. Not only are the surroundings really interesting and comfortable, the food is delicious! Definitely recommend paying the big red pizza a visit!"

  • "This really is a fantastic venue and, with the addition of lovely staff and great food, it all makes for a wonderful night out."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "I have been to this place several times before and the place is a novelty and the food good. However, the service has always been a bit poor and this last time was even worse. The staff do not seem to have a clue and need some serious management and organisation or I won't be going again."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "Great food - always love the pizzas here, good cocktails and a fun relaxed atmosphere. The service wasn't as good as it normally was though which was disappointing."
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "We had dinner at the Big Red with two children and they loved it! The pizza's were lovely, child menu is good value but the best part is by far the setting of the restaurant. It was brilliant eating "on the bus" and having access to the driver's seat while we waited for our food was an added bonus. Kids loved it, highly recommended for a family meal out with a difference.Overall, loved the Big Red, it is a truly awesome and unique eatery with good ethical values."
    dined on 04/06/2014
  • "Had a really lovely meal, shame there was no pasta at lunch times but the pizza more than made up for it. Really child friendly atmosphere, so a great place for families."
    dined on 29/05/2014
  • "I visited the Big Red with my family for a birthday. The atmosphere was great and staff were accommodating, but the negatives which over-rode the positives about our evening. When we gave our initial food order, out of a group of 5, 2 of the party couldn't have their first option due to low avails which were were not informed before hand. Then re-ordered, and the second option was not available either after back and forth with kitchen. Third option was ordered and arrived incorrectly and subsequently returned. By the time the final meal arrived, everyone else had finished eating, so my mum had to eat on her own. "
    dined on 27/05/2014
  • "We enjoyed being able to sit on the top deck of a converted old bus. The waitresses were very friendly and attentive. The food came quickly. My pizza was great. My friend's pasta was just a bit bland however. Overall we really enjoyed it."
    dined on 24/05/2014
  • "We visited on Sunday 18 May. The food and service was excellent and great value for money. However, although it was a warm day (25 degrees) it was extremely hot in the restaurant (we didn’t even attempt to sit on the bus itself but in the outside seating area). I would visit again but would wait for a cooler day!"
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "We went there for a 10th birthday party with 10 kids. The service was very friendly, the food was good, and the children had a great time at the top floor of the bus."
    dined on 11/05/2014
  • "The restaurant is bigger than I thought, you can dine inside the old red bus, there are 3 decking areas, infront of the restaurant, next to the bus and in the back with a foosball table. There's two bars. It serves local beer, like Porter from Meantime which I really like, so that made me very happy. It's a quaint restaurant, love the ambiance. It also hosts especial events like the Deftford Cinema festival. Not to be confused with the Irish pub next to it. The Red Bus Pizza it's one of a kind. The pizza was delicious and a very good size for one person, The dough balls could be more mushier and softer. All the serve staff are very nice, and show great attitude. It's right by the Deftford DLR station, on googlemaps it appears further. "
    dined on 03/05/2014
  • "I loved the environment (pizza in a red bus???) and the food. The portobello mushooms were ace! The only thing I would comment is that maybe the pizza needs to be an inch larger :)"
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "Fairly simple but well done food in a fun venue for both adults and children. The lasagne is really good and a generous portion too. The creamed portobello mushrooms on toast is a very nice starter as is the pumpkin ravioli. Nice Meantime beers and friendly staff. The children loved sitting in the driver's cab whilst waiting for food to arrive and the novelty of eating on the bus, but this isn't just a place for kids. It has a warm, easygoing atmosphere which is nice for everyone. We've been twice, once with and once without. Recommended."

  • "I took my neice here during the Easter holiday for lunch. We sat on the top deck. Bus has diner style feel. Food consists of pizzas, pastas and salads. Loads of delicious choices and a very good specials menu. There is a kids menu too. Food took a while to arrive but when it did the pizzas was lovely, with a thin base (which I prefer) I had two glasses of wine, absolutely gorgeously. Meal was laid back and enjoyable. This restaurant is very cool and an excellent idea. They also do cocktails and I hope to be back soon, maybe an evening visit to sample these! Convenient to get to by bus or dlr"

  • "If you are familiar with Deptford you will know it bears no resemblance to Greenwich, a mere 10 minutes up the road but a world apart as regards eateries. The Big Red Pizza was a fantastic find. The owner was very informative & helpful when I called (twice) with general queries & to ask for directions. The server (I'm so sorry, I cant remember her name) went above & beyond. She was friendly & efficient. My friend & I both had the Gnocci with braised lamb & shared a garlic bread. The food was fantastic - best gnocci I have had outside of Italy. Portions were good altho we could have done with a bit more meat. The food was reasonably priced. Will definitely return & recommend wholeheartedly."

  • "Great little place - not the best pizza in london, but certainly very good. Reasonable bar menu, quirky venue with a vibrant feel - worth a visit especially given local competition."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "This is a lovely relaxing place to eat. We went on a chilly Sunday afternoon but they had some heaters on. The place is an eclectic dining area with the bus and other seating arrangements connected. The food is delicious, especially the pizza which has a lovely base. Their garlic bread with cheese and honey was a lovely surprise and everyone wanted more of that. The pasta and gnocci went down a treat too. This was our first visit but it won't be our last. One daughter that doesn't really like Italian food enjoyed it and will go back again. It will be a great place to eat in the summer as they have an open air space."

  • "Interesting setting, nice venue with the bus ( a little hot though) and a nice covered outside space. Food was good and service speedy. Would also be a nice place to stop for a drink."

  • "Food is delicious and service is good but the real star here is the ambient. The place is perfect to gather with friends for drinks and food (which was even better than expected, you can really tell everything is fresh and they use quality ingredients). I never thought dining on a bus could be so nice. Will definitely be back."
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "We had a lovely dinner here, the food was great, the bus is a novel idea, and the outside space is really versatile. Great for kids as well as adults."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "We went for lunch with our two children (2 & 5), they enjoyed their kids pizza and we liked our veggie pizzas. Lovely thin bases and lots of topping. It was novel being on the bus and the children liked the balloon toys made for them by the entertainer. We would go back."
    dined on 18/02/2014
  • "I would thoroughly recommend the Big Red Pizza Bus for anyone dining out with children. My friend and her children had a fantastic afternoon, with the added excitement of dining on a double-decker bus. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and were so lovely with the children. The food was delicious, and it was lovely to be able to shelter from the rain for a while and watch moves in the back of a lorry (although the seating could be a bit more comfortable in the cinema). May I thank the gentleman who provided our five year old with a balloon cutlass and face-painting, he didn't stop talking about it all day. All in all, we had a fabulous time and can't wait to go there again. Thanks. Kam"

  • "I love this place. We took some friends along Saturday lunchtime. There were 12 of us including 6 kids and there was no trouble accommodating us. We had the whole downstairs of the double decker bus (there is also ample seating outside the bus in a covered (basically indoor) heated garden area. The kids loved being able to 'drive' the bus and wear a driver's hat! This was the least stressful lunch out I have ever had with children. The food was very tasty and great value. A good place if you want something a bit quirky with good food/drink. They were showing a kids film which we didn't have time to stick around for unfortunately. This place is quite different at night - better if you're after a kid free evening, often there's entertainment."
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "Always passed the place and thought it looked quirky so decided to give it a try with my girlfriend. Sitting on the top deck of a bus isn't as cramped as you'd think. The ambience was great if a little loud but fine enough for a Friday evening in an enclosed space. The food was great, really tasty. Would go back again."

  • "I had my 21st birthday dinner at this restaurant and it was absolutely fabulous. Really great food, great ambiance, great staff, I have nothing to complain about. I have only compliments. If you want really good pizza and or ravioli go here."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "This place is seriously cool with a great atmosphere, incredible food (try the lamb gnocchi) and you get to eat on a double decker bus. We went here for our 1st anniversary and they bought us complimentary champers. Don't go if you want an upmarket experience...this place has no pretension and no fancy cutlery - just warm people to make you feel welcome, a great atmosphere and amazing food!"
    dined on 12/01/2014
  • "This has a novelty aspect to it and that was what drew me. It's not everywhere you get to sit on an old bus you went to school on 22 years ago to eat your dinner. What was outstanding, especially for this area, was the quality of food and service. A really good experience all round and can't wait to go again."
    dined on 11/01/2014
  • "Went with three friends of mine and we all were more than satisfied about the food and the service."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "What a disappointment!I booked this restaurant for my friend's birthday and it was a disaster. I had been looking forward to going for so long and we arrived for our reservation and the manager was outrageously rude to us. He was terse and unfriendly and then rushed us so much that we decided to leave. We did not get a chance to taste the food because the ambiance and service were worse than poor. We were almost in tears! I would definitely not recommend this experience unless they find new people to work there."
    dined on 03/10/2013
  • "Quirky idea, but done well without over-charging you for a gimmick. Make sure you order the garlic bread with honey!"
    dined on 19/09/2013
  • "Real shame the bus doesn't move (as soon as my son's pizza arrived, he said the bus was ready to go!) It was a great experience BUT way too expensive and everything was soaked in balsamic vinegar. More like central London tourist prices. Friendly good service but seriously the food was small portions, large prices and all about the balsamic..."

  • "Great little place, novelty of eating on the bus (very comfy with a view over the covered courtyard bar below) plus food is excellent value for money - starters of bruschetta and goats cheese salad were generous and the pizza tasty. Good selection of drinks inc meantime ales (bottles only). Would definitely return. On a warmer night would have moved down to the courtyard for more drinks and livelier atmosphere too."
    dined on 14/09/2013
  • "This was the second time we've eaten at the Big Red and it was just as good as last time - really good food and attentive staff. The only slight quibble was that we had barely finished our starters before the mains arrived. Other than that it was a spot-on night, and was excellent value at that."
