A word from The Dirty Habit

The Dirty Habit is a beautiful 13th Century pub situated in the picturesque Kentish village of Hollingbourne. Set on The Pilgrims Way in a designated area of natural beauty, with many walks and bike rides from the pub, it has been used by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury for centuries. It is reputed that King James II stayed at the inn whilst on his way to France via Canterbury and Dover. We offer a varied selection of freshly prepared food all day every day, both traditional English as well as continental specialties using local suppliers whenever possible to support the local farming community. For those special occasions we can offer a private dining service in a beautiful period room 'The Monks Corner' with oak beams to the apex and an inglenook fireplace to set it all off.

Diner Reviews
  • "Have been here a number of times and never been disappointed! Recently took my parents out for a treat and the evening was fantastic. My husband and I had the chateau braind which was outstanding."

  • "Nestled at the foot of the North Downs to the north of Hollingbourne village and adjacent to The Pilgrims Way you will find this rustic gastro pub/inn. The Dirty Habit is well regarded locally and justifiably so. For a quick lunch while on a walk we had a Moroccan Lamb Burger served with fries and relish, and beer battered cod and chips. Both beautifully cooked and presented and served by the attentive professional staff. This is a reliably good eating establishment, which I can recommend without reservation."

  • "We were greeted in a friendly manner on arrival, nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent as was the service. We had superb Dorset crab to start. Absolutely no complaints at all. The loos were clean too!."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Great Sunday lunch, although our 19 year old found the portions a bit small. Great atmosphere and friendly service, but all just a bit slow! Think they need another member of the waiting staff on duty on Sunday lunchtime. However, this is a return visit for us, and we will be going back!"

  • "Food is pretty decent with the notable exception of the shortbread biscuit accompanying my dessert, under baked, floury texture and flavour, horrible! Was a bit noisy for a time but it quietened down to a pleasant hubbub eventually. We would visit again."

  • "We continue to return to this restaurant as the service and food are consistently great and we are always guaranteed a lovely meal out."

  • "Fantastic gastropub in the country, beautiful old pub with lots of character"

  • "I went to the Dirty Habitat on Sunday for Lunch, the staff were very friendly especially Danny the Front of House Manager, the food was very good and the portions enormous. The only problem was we ordered wine for lunch as a group and they only had one bottle of each wine in stock, so we had to keep changing. Also, they run out of San Migel. This is a lovely restaurant with a really busy trade they really need to keep more than one bottle of some of their wines in stock. I would definitely recommend the food and service was excellent."

  • "I don't know if it was the glorious sunny day that made my experience at the Dirty Habit so wonderful. Or was it the beautiful old building, with its tasteful outdoor seating area? Maybe it was the smiling friendly staff. I guess the fact that the food was delicious, and well presented made the experience so good. My boyfreind and I both hand the Moroccan lamb burgers, which were mouthwatering, served with the best chips ever! He had the peach Melba to follow, which looked very appetising. I had the chocolate delice. It was heaven! (Tiny point, slighty more clotted cream please!) Overall, set in the beautiful Kent countryside, the Dirty Habit at Hollingbourne, is somewhere I will definitely visit again."

  • "Great food, service and atmosphere for my Dad's 65th birthday lunch. Just a shame we weren't allowed to open a tab in the outside eating area, but not a huge issue."
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "Good food and ambiance in a beautiful old Pilgrims Rest. Nice place for a Sunday roast in particular. Only gripe would be that some of the furniture is of the hard and less than altogether comfortable variety."
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "One of our best pub meals ever. Absolutely delicious food in a stunning setting. Highly recommended."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "We haved dined here several times and so far it's been excellent every time. We love the history of the building and that it combines character with fine food and excellent service. We will be back soon to enjoy another comfortable evening with friends and a good dinner."

  • "I booked ths because it has good reviews and not a massive menu, so figured the food would be fresh and it didn't disappoint. Well cooked food, good service and reasonable bill. Would deinitely go again."
    dined on 11/06/2014
  • "Very nice pub, in a great location but the food is far too overpriced. Service is very friendly as well. Went for Sunday lunch and cost over £40 per head. When you take into account we only had a few drinks (no alcohol apart from one or two beers across the 4 adults it was way to pricey. And the fact is the food is ok but not great. Put simply, if you're going to charge those prices, then the food needs to be better."
    dined on 08/06/2014
  • "We enjoyed our visit to The Dirty Habit and were made to feel very special by the people who looked after us and served our meal and drinks. They were excellent. The ambience was very pleasant but tables very close did mean our fellow diners on a business lunch were close and had rather loud laughs - obviously a successful business lunch! The food was outstanding so overall it was a very pleasant experience."

  • "From entering with a warm welcome to going home the staff were very customer friendly but not over the top or false. Great service and lovely food. Would highly recommend eating here. "

  • "Third visit. Great food, plenty of it and usual superb, attentive and friendly service. "
    dined on 30/05/2014
  • "Recently visited this restaurant on recommendation. Drove for one hour in pouring rain to be sorely disappointed. My starter was OK but main course appeared to be leftover from lunchtime and heated up! The food sounds good on menu but does not match at all in reality. I was offered a pudding to compensate for the un-eaten first course which was not very good either. All in all a wasted journey not to be repeated. "
    dined on 26/05/2014
  • "The food was very nice however the service wasn't brilliant, it took a while to be asked if we wanted a drink despite not being presented with a wine menu when we were seated. When I booked the table I asked if we could be seated somewhere accessible for someone not too steady on their feet but was actually seated at the far end of the restaurant which given the sloping paved and stepped floor was not very useful. I would say the staff were very pleasent though and the meal was good value, a bit more of a personal touch would have been nice given my dads disability. though and the meal was good value, a bit more of a personal touch would have been nice given my dads disability."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here after it was recommended by a friend, who lived nearby. The pub itself is very charming and cosy - all oak panels and warm woods. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine list and food. I had duck as my main and it was perfectly cooked - my boyfriend had a very nice rib eye. If you are in the vicinity, then i definitely recommend this jewel of a pub. "

  • "My brother asked for a recommendation for his birthday lunch and I suggested the Dirty Habit. My wife and I are regulars and thought it would be great for a larger group - we weren't disappointed. The service is always great here, the guys work hard to make you feel welcome and know the menu well. For kids it's great as there is a good range as opposed to the usual fish finger/burger option they have at other restaurants. Very good value too!"

  • "Lovely food.with good service did tend to hover which can put.you on edge as if you are being rushed but.food was amazing couldn't fault it "
    dined on 02/05/2014
  • "really disappointed as had heard good things about the food at this place. food overpriced for what is served. disappointed in the lack of vegetarian options, just because we don't eat meat doesn't mean we don't like food . food tasted very salty and bland and not much of it on the plate. very over priced for what you get. atmosphere of place nice and staff very attentive and helpful. so overall disappointed."
    dined on 25/04/2014
  • "We have used the DH many times over recent years as a "treat meal out" venue and it has always served us well until now. Arriving as a 4 for a mid-week evening meal, we were crammed onto a small table with a screaming child for a neighbour. Our conversation throughout the evening was blighted by the roar of the coffee machine a few feet from our heads. Service was slow, disjointed and forgetful with seemingly one girl serving the entire pub and a couple of others occasionally drifting past with a plate. The food was good, but for the price, only just good enough. A very disappointing visit and very likely our last, what a shame."
    dined on 23/04/2014
  • "After working up an appetite with one of the great circular walks starting from the Dirty Habit, we enjoyed filling gourmet sandwiches and chips which left just enough room for pudding - the sticky toffee was divine and apparently so was the rhubarb and apple crumble. We'll definitely be back again (we still have nine more walks to try. Dogs are welcome - even our brats (although if they don't behave themselves next time they may be barred)."
    dined on 19/04/2014
  • "We booked a table for two at the last minute. The car park was full but managed to squeeze in. The welcome was excellent and even though we were early we were seated straight away. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. We had a sharing platter as a starter which was adequate. All the food was of good quality, but I would have liked my Channa Dahl to be more flavoursome. Top marks for welcome and service on a very busy Bank Holiday."

  • "We took a relative to the Dirty Habit who travels overseas a lot for her employment in the film industry and she was most impressed with the standard of food, the service, and general ambience."

  • "Food was great as always!! Stayed open so we could sit inside whilst we waited for a taxi that was running late. Friendly staff. Looking forward to next visit!!"

  • "Menu was absolutely superb, we were spoilt for choice. The food was excellent. Service was a little slow (they were very busy) but that suited us fine - I am glad we were not in a hurry. Definitely worth waiting for, excellent value for money. Thank you."

  • "A lovely little Country pub, full of charm - the food was very very good bordering on excellent - I would not hesitate in going back."
    dined on 06/04/2014
  • "From start to finish the service and food at the dirty habit was wonderful, we attended for a special occasion and were not disappointed. The original table we were offered was right by the gents toilet which was like picadilly circus. We asked to move it was no problem and we were moved to a much better location. The Staff were great and service was very good, the food was excellent both me and my wife are trained chefs and enjoy evenings out for good meals. We really enjoyed the evening and thought it was good value for what we had. We would recommend the Dirty Habit to others it ticks all the right boxes!!!"

  • "Traditional English pub / resturant run by Eastern Europeans , average food , pork was tough and over cooked , not enough prawns and mussels in the pasta and a bit of a cold atmosphere . Was looking forward to going but won't be back , wasn't what I expected and expensive ."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Excellent as always , fantastic service , nothing is too much trouble ."
