A word from The Dirty Habit

The Dirty Habit is a beautiful 13th Century pub situated in the picturesque Kentish village of Hollingbourne. Set on The Pilgrims Way in a designated area of natural beauty, with many walks and bike rides from the pub, it has been used by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury for centuries. It is reputed that King James II stayed at the inn whilst on his way to France via Canterbury and Dover. We offer a varied selection of freshly prepared food all day every day, both traditional English as well as continental specialties using local suppliers whenever possible to support the local farming community. For those special occasions we can offer a private dining service in a beautiful period room 'The Monks Corner' with oak beams to the apex and an inglenook fireplace to set it all off.

Diner Reviews
  • "After working up an appetite with one of the great circular walks starting from the Dirty Habit, we enjoyed filling gourmet sandwiches and chips which left just enough room for pudding - the sticky toffee was divine and apparently so was the rhubarb and apple crumble. We'll definitely be back again (we still have nine more walks to try. Dogs are welcome - even our brats (although if they don't behave themselves next time they may be barred)."

  • "We booked a table for two at the last minute. The car park was full but managed to squeeze in. The welcome was excellent and even though we were early we were seated straight away. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. We had a sharing platter as a starter which was adequate. All the food was of good quality, but I would have liked my Channa Dahl to be more flavoursome. Top marks for welcome and service on a very busy Bank Holiday."

  • "We took a relative to the Dirty Habit who travels overseas a lot for her employment in the film industry and she was most impressed with the standard of food, the service, and general ambience."

  • "Food was great as always!! Stayed open so we could sit inside whilst we waited for a taxi that was running late. Friendly staff. Looking forward to next visit!!"

  • "Menu was absolutely superb, we were spoilt for choice. The food was excellent. Service was a little slow (they were very busy) but that suited us fine - I am glad we were not in a hurry. Definitely worth waiting for, excellent value for money. Thank you."

  • "A lovely little Country pub, full of charm - the food was very very good bordering on excellent - I would not hesitate in going back."

  • "From start to finish the service and food at the dirty habit was wonderful, we attended for a special occasion and were not disappointed. The original table we were offered was right by the gents toilet which was like picadilly circus. We asked to move it was no problem and we were moved to a much better location. The Staff were great and service was very good, the food was excellent both me and my wife are trained chefs and enjoy evenings out for good meals. We really enjoyed the evening and thought it was good value for what we had. We would recommend the Dirty Habit to others it ticks all the right boxes!!!"

  • "Traditional English pub / resturant run by Eastern Europeans , average food , pork was tough and over cooked , not enough prawns and mussels in the pasta and a bit of a cold atmosphere . Was looking forward to going but won't be back , wasn't what I expected and expensive ."

  • "Excellent meal for 4 in a lovely friendly pub. Staff are brilliant. I would recommend the scallops and my daughter would recommend the chocolate fondant."

  • "On the back of other reviews for this pub we took our young daughter and dog for a spot of lunch and a walk. The pub is really nice inside and there's a small terrace and snug out the back as well, with a small car park behind that. The staff were very nice and service was good. However, we thought the food was slightly overpriced on some things, especially desserts which were £6. Despite that I'd still recommend this pub. They also have free local walking guides for all levels which takes you across some beautiful countryside with great views of North Downs"

  • "We visited this restaurant on a Monday night as we were visiting the nearby towns. We saw good comments online for this restaurant and decided to give it a go. The decor and lighting of the whole restaurant/pub is homey and comfy. All waiters/waitresses were so nice. They made sure that we were all comfortable and that the food was ok for us, and all of them carry a sincere smile. It seems to me that they really enjoy working there too. There were 5 of us and we ordered 4 starters and 5 mains to share. All of them were so good and exceeded my expectation. The baked camembert as starter was gorgeous and also the fish plank. The crab and crayfish linguini as main was done and seasoned just right."

  • "Second visit in a month or so. Fabulous starter (shared '6 Nations' platter), excellent main course and superb service. Plenty of friendly, polite staff on duty, no long waits. Not inexpensive but food delicious and service faultless!"

  • "Went to the DH for a birthday meal with family. Well looked after by the team and the food was first rate. Great time had by all. Would definitely recommend."

  • "This Dirty Habit is always a firm favourite with friends & family, The pub has a warm traditional atmosphere and retains its oldy worldy charm. We visited as a group for Sunday Lunch 3pm. The service was prompt considering how busy they were. And always very polite. We ordered a selection of different meal options, includng Sunday roasts. I am vegetarian and I did find the vegetarian options disappointing. There tends to be a trend of offering 'Risotto' on restaurant menus as the Vegetarian choice - but there's only so much rice I can eat!. If you don't opt for the Risotto then you must accept a cold salad main course instead. Not great for a cold Winter's day and over-priced. It needs to address the Vegetarian options for a 5 star rating!"

  • "Just popped in with a mate for a light dinner. I had the monster burger which was delicious and my mate had the sea bream which he said was the best he had had in some time. Including two and a half beers each it came to just over £50, so not the cheapest around but overall fair value. The place was full and there was a small boisterous group at the bar, so it was quite noisy, but I wasn't troubled by it. Food came quite quickly after the order was placed so no issues there even with a full restaurant and the staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a pleasant experience."

  • "We had been here for Sunday lunch recently and we had a great time & the Sunday roast was excellent - so we wanted to come back for an evening meal and my wife's birthday seemed the ideal opportunity. Unfortunately we were disappointed with the food on this occasion - we both had the chuck steak burger and it was dense in texture and very over seasoned - my wife couldn't finish hers. On the up side, the restaurant was buzzing and the staff were excellent - we haven't been put off - it's a great place!"

  • "The 3 of us enjoyed our visit to the Dirty Habit. The service was excellent and the food really very good. A few of the tables were a little too close together. But other than that an excellent experience."

  • "Went for an evening meal for nine, aged 9 to 77. All enjoyed it except my 9-yr old who chose the sausages and mash from the children's menu. They were a bit over done and the gravy was much too rich for a child. The restaurant didn't charge us for her meal and gave a free dessert - very nice of them Everyone else enjoyed their food. Good variety to choose from. Total bill about £300."

  • "We read some of the views prior to booking. They were spot on, the welcome was warm, service friendly & efficient, the food was superb, the beer selection was interesting with a special brew on tap and the price was reasonable for the quality. Yes it's a little off the beaten track but only 10 minutes from M20 is not too far, and the village is lovely to have a little post lunch walk around."

  • "We have visited DH many times, but not for Sunday Lunch. We booked a late (2.30) table. One of our party is veggie and the options were disappointing. DH veggie options are boring - always some sort of risotto / cold salad with some sort of cheese. Nothing 'special' for a sunday & no veggie roast option, however she was offered the roast without the meat. When it came was just the accompaniments without the meat. No allowance was given for more veg/potatoes, no gravy (meat). Meat roasts were fairly pricey ~ £13.85. My husband only got 3 bite-size roast potatoes. Meat qty good & well cooked, but veg portion small, cauliflower nearly raw & pork crackling bendy - nowhere near enough gravy! Service slow. Not sure we'll visit again for a while."

  • "This is a fantastic pub with a lovely ambience with the log fire spitting and the smell of the logs burning. The food is fantastic and the presentation also goes further then a general pub. If you go here you need to be a foodie enjoying meals such as game, or foods with a twist. They serve sandwiches, afternoon teas, starters, mains and desserts with a wide variety of food to offer to hopefully cover all types of foods. I have visited here on several occasions for afternoon tea, sunday lunch, girls night out, lunch and tea. Every time i have visited the welcome is always as warming as the first ever visit! Hosting skills are high and for a pub its a great thing to have!"

  • "We enjoyed the well cooked and presented dishes from a good menu range and found the innovative tapas a pleasant alternative to the starters - we shared two. Portions were just right and we were impressed by the range of wines - and also measures, from small glass through to large carafe. We had been before and will come again - but bring our own tonic for the G and T. £1.95. for a mixer here!"

  • "The staff are always so courteous and take the trouble to explain things and the menu to you . They do not hassle you while you dither over the great choice or hang around over coffee when everyone else has gone It was an excellent lunch which we had with foodie friends from Surrey . They wished it was nearer . We live locally so often go without booking midweek for a snack and get the same service and excellent food .Always book for Sunday lunch though !"

  • "To celebrate my mother and fathers birthdays we booked to eat at the dirty habit. Me and my partner had visited for drinks several times and liked the look of the place, very cossey, great winter pub, looks very festive. I would recommend booking in advance as this was the third attempt to get a table, and having finally been successful and getting a table I can understand why. Food was very good, not cheap but an acceptable amount for a special occasion. I believe a good night should cover good food, service, ambience, ale and of course good company. As I drove I can't give a verdict on the ale, how ever the Dirty Habit ticks all the other boxes. I will return."

  • "We enjoyed our visit to The Dirty Habit - first time we had been for years. The food was excellent and the atmosphere lively yet relaxing. Two open fires one each end giving a welcoming warmth. Many walkers calling in as it is en route for various walks. Very enjoyable."

  • "What a lovely menu and the food is amazing too with good size portions. The pub/restaurant has a lovely feel (oldy worldy) and is very popular so book a table in advance. You will not be disappointed if you go here. I've been there twice in January so far. I had the burger the first time, which was the best tasting burger I've ever had. Then I had the steak sandwich when I went there at the weekend. I'm always dubious about ordering steak sandwiches when I go out, as from experience they are either, chewy, gristly and not much steak. I was pleasantly surprised with the one I ordered here. I would recommend this to anyone."
