A word from The Dirty Habit

The Dirty Habit is a beautiful 13th Century pub situated in the picturesque Kentish village of Hollingbourne. Set on The Pilgrims Way in a designated area of natural beauty, with many walks and bike rides from the pub, it has been used by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury for centuries. It is reputed that King James II stayed at the inn whilst on his way to France via Canterbury and Dover. We offer a varied selection of freshly prepared food all day every day, both traditional English as well as continental specialties using local suppliers whenever possible to support the local farming community. For those special occasions we can offer a private dining service in a beautiful period room 'The Monks Corner' with oak beams to the apex and an inglenook fireplace to set it all off.

A busy Thursday and unfortunately several dishes had gone by the time we ordered. The quality of food and portion sizes is excellent. Service went off the boil after 10pm but overall a good value quality evening.

Third or fourth visit over last year to DH, a lovely gastro pub, well situated for excellent walks from the front door. Atmosphere is fine and food overall is good although not outstanding. Several negatives: as a group of four it was odd that one of group had to sit on a leather armchair at the table which was uncomfortably low. Although the pub was only half full it took us two hours to complete two courses, and we don't eat that slowly! Finally, in my opinion, the prices are too steep for what is on offer (both food and particularly wine) and for that reason it is hard to recommend.

Food was amazing, helpful staff. Large party, all having Sunday Lunch. At £15.50 the roast platter was a bit sparse. More potatoes needed all round (3 smallish ones came with the meal). Of course, we went for dessert to fill the gap!

I booked a lunchtime meal for a party of 4 and once again we were not disappointed with the service, quality, presentation, and quantity of the meals we all enjoyed. The atmosphere of the Dirty Habit is very rustic with a great deal of atmosphere. The restaurant was very busy at the end of our meal....a good sign that supports my praise. We definitely will be returning.

Booked last minute, nice table for 2, good menu including specials. The food was freshly cooked and of a high standard, the service was excellent. The price was slightly higher than I would have expected, but given the quality of both the food and the service I would definitely recommend and go back.

Nestled at the foot of the North Downs to the north of Hollingbourne village and adjacent to The Pilgrims Way you will find this rustic gastro pub/inn. The Dirty Habit is well regarded locally and justifiably so. For a quick lunch while on a walk we had a Moroccan Lamb Burger served with fries and relish, and beer battered cod and chips. Both beautifully cooked and presented and served by the attentive professional staff. This is a reliably good eating establishment, which I can recommend without reservation.

Great Sunday lunch, although our 19 year old found the portions a bit small. Great atmosphere and friendly service, but all just a bit slow! Think they need another member of the waiting staff on duty on Sunday lunchtime. However, this is a return visit for us, and we will be going back!

Food is pretty decent with the notable exception of the shortbread biscuit accompanying my dessert, under baked, floury texture and flavour, horrible! Was a bit noisy for a time but it quietened down to a pleasant hubbub eventually. We would visit again.

I love this place. The waiting staff are really lovely - excellent at making you feel welcome. Service is really good - attentive but not intrusive and you aren't made to feel rushed. The food is seriously good pub food at a very reasonable price. Good job! My daughter and I shared a lovely meal in this gorgeous Kent pub before I drove her back home to London. :)

I went to the Dirty Habitat on Sunday for Lunch, the staff were very friendly especially Danny the Front of House Manager, the food was very good and the portions enormous. The only problem was we ordered wine for lunch as a group and they only had one bottle of each wine in stock, so we had to keep changing. Also, they run out of San Migel. This is a lovely restaurant with a really busy trade they really need to keep more than one bottle of some of their wines in stock. I would definitely recommend the food and service was excellent.

I don't know if it was the glorious sunny day that made my experience at the Dirty Habit so wonderful. Or was it the beautiful old building, with its tasteful outdoor seating area? Maybe it was the smiling friendly staff. I guess the fact that the food was delicious, and well presented made the experience so good. My boyfreind and I both hand the Moroccan lamb burgers, which were mouthwatering, served with the best chips ever! He had the peach Melba to follow, which looked very appetising. I had the chocolate delice. It was heaven! (Tiny point, slighty more clotted cream please!) Overall, set in the beautiful Kent countryside, the Dirty Habit at Hollingbourne, is somewhere I will definitely visit again.

Very nice pub, in a great location but the food is far too overpriced. Service is very friendly as well. Went for Sunday lunch and cost over £40 per head. When you take into account we only had a few drinks (no alcohol apart from one or two beers across the 4 adults it was way to pricey. And the fact is the food is ok but not great. Put simply, if you're going to charge those prices, then the food needs to be better.

We enjoyed our visit to The Dirty Habit and were made to feel very special by the people who looked after us and served our meal and drinks. They were excellent. The ambience was very pleasant but tables very close did mean our fellow diners on a business lunch were close and had rather loud laughs - obviously a successful business lunch! The food was outstanding so overall it was a very pleasant experience.

Recently visited this restaurant on recommendation. Drove for one hour in pouring rain to be sorely disappointed. My starter was OK but main course appeared to be leftover from lunchtime and heated up! The food sounds good on menu but does not match at all in reality. I was offered a pudding to compensate for the un-eaten first course which was not very good either. All in all a wasted journey not to be repeated.

The food was very nice however the service wasn't brilliant, it took a while to be asked if we wanted a drink despite not being presented with a wine menu when we were seated. When I booked the table I asked if we could be seated somewhere accessible for someone not too steady on their feet but was actually seated at the far end of the restaurant which given the sloping paved and stepped floor was not very useful. I would say the staff were very pleasent though and the meal was good value, a bit more of a personal touch would have been nice given my dads disability. though and the meal was good value, a bit more of a personal touch would have been nice given my dads disability.

My boyfriend and I went here after it was recommended by a friend, who lived nearby. The pub itself is very charming and cosy - all oak panels and warm woods. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine list and food. I had duck as my main and it was perfectly cooked - my boyfriend had a very nice rib eye. If you are in the vicinity, then i definitely recommend this jewel of a pub.

My brother asked for a recommendation for his birthday lunch and I suggested the Dirty Habit. My wife and I are regulars and thought it would be great for a larger group - we weren't disappointed. The service is always great here, the guys work hard to make you feel welcome and know the menu well. For kids it's great as there is a good range as opposed to the usual fish finger/burger option they have at other restaurants. Very good value too!

We have used the DH many times over recent years as a "treat meal out" venue and it has always served us well until now. Arriving as a 4 for a mid-week evening meal, we were crammed onto a small table with a screaming child for a neighbour. Our conversation throughout the evening was blighted by the roar of the coffee machine a few feet from our heads. Service was slow, disjointed and forgetful with seemingly one girl serving the entire pub and a couple of others occasionally drifting past with a plate. The food was good, but for the price, only just good enough. A very disappointing visit and very likely our last, what a shame.

After working up an appetite with one of the great circular walks starting from the Dirty Habit, we enjoyed filling gourmet sandwiches and chips which left just enough room for pudding - the sticky toffee was divine and apparently so was the rhubarb and apple crumble. We'll definitely be back again (we still have nine more walks to try. Dogs are welcome - even our brats (although if they don't behave themselves next time they may be barred).

We booked a table for two at the last minute. The car park was full but managed to squeeze in. The welcome was excellent and even though we were early we were seated straight away. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. We had a sharing platter as a starter which was adequate. All the food was of good quality, but I would have liked my Channa Dahl to be more flavoursome. Top marks for welcome and service on a very busy Bank Holiday.
