A word from The Gate Hammersmith
Adrian and Michael Daniel have been running London's most successful vegetarian restaurant since December 1989. We have received numerous citations of excellence from various bodies and been nominated for several food awards over the years, winning Timeout's 'Best Vegetarian Meal' award in 1992. We source our ingredients with care, using only the freshest produce and organic where possible including free range eggs. We always have a selection of vegan dishes or vegan options. The wine menu offers a selection of organic, vegan and vegetarian wines. We try to be aware of our carbon footprint and try reducing it by recycling our waste and buying where possible from companies that are carbon offsetting. We hope you enjoy you visit,

Adrian & Michael Daniel

  • "And some pretty amazing vegan options too. Have been visiting this restaurant for decades and always regard a meal there as a treat. Beautiful food served by lovely people in a gorgeous setting. Shame I live in Edinburgh now, 'cause I'd be there at least once a week if I was still in London!"

  • "The food was so lovely and fresh, my guest and I loved it. The young lady that served us was great for recommendations and went through portion sizes. I would definitely have the mezze starter to share and the courgette flower!"

  • "A nice treat. Expensive but enjoyable. Great service till it got busy, then the one waiter became totally over worked and we waited a long time for our bill making us anxious for our next appointment."

  • "Up to their usual fabulous snuff! Every ingredient is discernable and each bite an experience you want to savour for hours. So glad it's so close to home!"

  • "Different eating experience, but nicely independent, with no nonsense tasty food. As a non vegetarian, I was more than happy within my dinning experience. My only criticism, is there any need for the background music? It was thankfully turned off later in the evening, but there is a happy buzz of chat and diners enjoying their food, that's all the background noise you need. Gate is a terrific place. Will return."

  • "Having visited The Gate in Hammersmith 4 or 5 times over the past 15 years I was delighted my non veggie partner chose it for our anniversary meal. He had never been and loved it. The mezze sharing platter of staters is a real showcase of the dishes, beautifully presented and each one delicious. The mains were equally stunning with asparagus cooked to perfection in the roloto and my stack of aubergine and sweet potato was spiced perfectly. No room really for dessert but that didn't stop us! The lemon posset was rich and tangy. We took the wines recommended by our waiter and they did not disappoint. Thank you to The Gate for another lovely evening."

  • "My wife and I went to dinner at The Gate for our wedding anniversary. As we are both vegetarians and there are not too many choices the feedback from others and the choice of options on the menu was important. From the beet root ravioli to the chipotle corn cake, the food was presented extremely well and it tasted great. The highlight was te dessert. Pineapple, pear and chilli with cream was astonishingly good. We'll be going back."

  • "Food was as usual good but felt less creative than previously. However service was poor. Our initial waiter was, to be fair new but approached us 4 times in less than ten minutes to take our food order when we were not ready. Olives were forgotten, the main course was slow in arriving and deserts were mixed up. But the worst was that we asked the restaurant to order us a cab. We were told it was ready but could not find the restaurant and was waiting at the flyover. There was no cab. Bad enough but this is the third time this has happened to us at this restaurant. We won't be going again."

  • "Booking was easy and we were warmly greeted on arrival. Though we were seated close to other dining couples, the service for each table was staggered and the table positions provided enough intimacy. My partner is a vegetarian and I require a wheat free option and this was made clear on our booking form. It was wonderful to experience fine dining without all the usual hassle. The service was excellent - it was warm, friendly and swift with my gluten free option explained as each course arrived. The menu is refreshingly inventive with the stuffed courgette flower and the polenta chips being a huge hit. The whole meal was well received, I have already recommended The Gate to several friends and intend to return soon."

  • "The Gate serves delicious vegetarian food. We had a late Sunday brunch and ordered from the a la carte menue, which also has several vegan options. The thali plate and gnocchi were tasty, albeit a bit oily. However, we had to wait for a VERY long time to get our main course - the starters came quickly, but then it took more than an hour to get the main meal. This may have been just bad luck and bad timing, but it does cast a bit of a shadow on the whole experience and we had to rush through our meal as we had other plans for the afternoon. The staff were friendly and apologetic, but in retrospect I feel they should have offered to compensate us in some way. From a purely culinary point of view, however, I definitely recommend the Gate."

  • "Was a bit skeptical as I'm not a veggie & thought the food would be as tasty as it was, glad I was proved wrong! Would definitely go back & recommend to anyone. All staff were great - on the ball & had sense of humour which is fun!"

  • "We love the Gate. One of us is vegetarian, the other not, but we both find the food delicious . We love eating in Brangwyn's studio. The only thing we don't love is the background music. Why is it necessary. The sound of happy chatter is all that's required. The thudding bass was really unbearable on Friday night and I actually mentioned it to the waiter who, kindly, changed the music. I much appreciated this but would far rather have none!"

  • "Consistently creative, delicious food served by friendly, passionate staff. My Dad and fiancée are massive meat eaters but frequently suggest we eat at the Gate as they like it so much!"

  • "I have been eating at the Gate in Hammersmith for > 10 years. Although I'm not a vegetarian, but I love their food. However, my most recent visit was a major disappointment. First, I don't like the renovation that they completed last year. This was my second visit post renovation and the problem is the same--the noise level is WAY TOO LOUD. wooden floors, concrete walls--there is absolutely no sound absorption.impossible to have a conversation. Second, food was disappointing. I noticed that a lot of the food was prepared-so it was just reheated. And, both main courses were served lukewarm even though it wasn't very busy. The food was also a bit boring-it seemed to have lost its originality. I will probably give it one more try."

  • "The Gate restaurant in Hammersmith has always been a favourite of ours and once again it did not disappoint. As a vegetarian I find the options available superb and the food is outstanding. My companion who is not a vegetarian always enjoys the choices with equal pleasure. A place not to be missed."

  • "Vegetarian restaurant food can often be boring, tasteless and unattractively served but the food at the Gate is completely the opposite. They also have gluten free and vegan options and even a meat eating friend who normally 'hates vegetarian food' really enjoyed it."

  • "lovely service and food, I found the venue to be quite noisy."

  • "The Gate was closed for refurbishment for months, so I was expecting to be dazzled by the new interiors. But to be honest, I cant see what they did, its pretty much the same as it was. However, the food certainly dazzled, im not vegetarian, but I was impressed by the textures and depth of flavour on offer. Service is a bit "slack" but I guess it is a fairly casual restaurant."

  • "Sadly , and not sure why, the lovely courtyard was closed on a beautiful evening. Too many tables upstairs, practically sitting with fellow diners. Poor acoustics, very noisy...zero atmosphere. As a veggie loved the menu, think I chose badly as the gnocchi wasn't "glazed in a sauce" more swimming in it. Fellow diners food seemed better presented. Two starters (small portions) two mains 2 soft drinks and 2 spritzers should not be £78. Staff not interested in serving, bordering on rude. Could be great, sadly wasn't."
    dined on 27/07/2014
  • "I'm a vegetarian and I've wanted to visit this restaurant for a long time but I was a bit disappointed. The bread we ordered was stale and I ordered a starter as a main which was absolutely tiny (3 pieces of pasta) and quite expensive at £6. If the waitress had told me this when I ordered I would have happily chosen something else. My friend's brunch was also small and after finishing we were still hungry so we went to get some more food from somewhere else. I think communication needs to be improved about the portion sizes, particularly at lunchtime when people aren't as likely to want the main meals."

  • "Staff very good, décor light ,bright and airy. Food Starters excellent main ok.I think it is very pricey for vegetarian food.We (a couple) had 2 starters 2 mains and 2 cokes and it was £62.00 steep for a 55 minute experience. I also think that there could be more choice, approx 4 starters and 4/5 mains with the same ingredients in some of the dishes a bit more variety please. It was a enjoyable experience but too expensive."

  • "I was meeting an old friend for dinner here. Unlike me,she is not vegetarian but we have always both enjoyed the food here and though we have visited the Islington restaurant a couple of times during the closure of this Hammersmith one, we much prefer the ambience of the original. The food is varied and without exception, imaginatively executed and beautifully assembled. The wine list is extensive and the price points are good. The service is charming and not at all pushy. We lingered over our fresh mint tea and at no point did we feel under pressure to leave. I would recommend it highly .The only downside,i guess, is that when very busy it could be noisy and I find the décor a little stark after the refurbishment."

  • "Being vegetarian we decided to visit The Gate to celebrate our anniversary with a weekend brunch. The food was excellent and our waitress was very polite and helpful with suggestions. We will be booking again soon as we have a large menu to try."

  • "In love this place, amazing fresh and very tasty seasonal food, friendly staff and good wine options as well as they do selected wines by the 500ml carafe, so everyone can drink what they like. I'm not a vegetarian, but with food this good who needs meat?"

  • "We loved The Gate in Hammersmith before it closed for refurbishment in 2011. loved it for its unique charm and exquisite cooking with ever surprising taste new flavours. For years we dined there everytime werk. It must have been too good to be true, because After the reopening all that is left of it is the name and the logo. Average food, chain restaurant blandness. How sad"

  • "I would highly recommend this venue the service was of the highest standard and the quality and taste of the food was second to none, a great restaurant for vegetarians with a good selection of dishes."

  • "I found the food here very tasty with quite a good option to the menu. The restaurant was nice and airy with plenty of light coming through the large windows. The service was ok...not great considering the price you pay. Busy enough for a Wednesday so that is a good sign. Located very close to the Hammersmith Odeon (sorry Apollo) so also well situated for events there. I would recommend The Gate."

  • "A very pleasant restaurant run by pleasant friendly people - the menu is very wide ranging and full of excting interesting ideas. Everything we had was delicious. It was a tricky evening as there was an exceptionally large crowd so the service was not as immaculate as usual but madeup for it in friendliness and courtesy. Quite rare to find such a varied and interesting range of options in a vegetarian restaurant... the aubergine dish called Thali was especially nice and the mix of starters we began with was exceptional."

  • "A great place for a meal with friends, nice design in unexpected location. All vegetarian menu which was great even for the group's omnivores. Service attentive but not overpowering. Well worth a visit. We went on a summer midweek evening."

  • "I went to the gate with a guy I had been seeing for a short while. The food was interesting, well presented and tasty. The restaurant is in a small hall with tables quite close together, minimal decor and it's not that well lit.. It didn't provide a great ambience for my date in terms of a special restaurant. Felt like a cafe."

  • "Great vegetarian options with a varied menu. The food was delicious and the service was flawless. As a vegetarian it's nice to come to a restaurant like this."

  • "The gate is a local restaurant which has been our setting for family/friends special occasions ever since I was a child. Since renovation the restaurant feels a lot more open and cool and it certainly suits the summer months well. It has served me well both on vegan and vegetarian diets. Recently staff have been very helpful with a friend of mine with allergies and added a birthday candle when I requested it in my booking. Many thanks!"
