A word from The Great House
This 16th century inn set in the heart of the Kentish weald just oozes character and history, with its wealth of exposed beams and a magnificent orangery overlooking the private garden. A traditional lynch gate and a herb garden just add to its charm. The mediterranean-style stone terrace is the ideal place to enjoy summer evenings. Our menu is made up of traditional English cuisine, regional French brasserie-style cuisine created by our chef as well as local seasonal game. You can also choose from a fine selection of ales and wine.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious food and great service, liked the décor and the garden. We did not feel hurried to finish and the staff were attentive and polite."

  • "Enjoyable, friendly staff. Service better than The Vineyard. Haven't been to either a sufficient number of times to compare food quality but would go the Great House again. For me, portions a bit too big - we are not in America - smaller and, perhaps, cheaper would be a desirable attribute. Cannot comment directly but the loo's given 5 stars by the ladies in our group."

  • "We wanted a nice place to take friends who were new to the area but who were discerning diners. The great house delivered with lovely, helpful staff and very nice food served outside in lovely surroundings. Could not fault it. We have also dined inside in the past and loved the decor and the AGA!"

  • "A very enjoyable evening with good food and excellent service. Starters very tasty but a little overpriced given the portion sizes. Main courses were delicious and good value. Desserts at £6 pricey. However , excellent ambience and very friendly staff made this a memorable evening. Will be back."

  • "We booked on line for our resovation and all went according to plan. We were greeted and seated. Drinks were brought to our table in the pub part before being shown to our table in the restaurant. Service was excellent as was the food. We have been there quite a few times and have never been disappointed. Will return"

  • "A lovely lunch with an interesting menu. We really enjoyed the Brazilian Platter. Service was friendly and efficient. Pleasant environment - a bit noisy for me but can't complain because it was only people enjoying themselves instead of loud "background" music."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "My wife were staying in Hawkhurst for just one night. It isn't a part of Sussex we are familiar with and read various reviews on the internet before booking. We were not disappointed. The food was well cooked, nice and hot and well presented (and a great pint of Harvey's) The staff were friendly, polite and efficient and I felt the bill represented good value for money. All in all a good night out and if we were in this area again I would certainly book another table."

  • "A very pleasant dining room looking out on to the garden in a building dating vack to the 1600s. It was full at 7.30 on a a Sunday evening - though the restaurant closes at 9.30. An eclectic menu with the aga specials of particualr interest. The "dabs fillet", spelled and pronounced as written, were worthy of mention. It is some time indeed since I have seen dab on a menu but the fillets were very well cooked, although the kitchen wasa little heavy handed with the mornay sauce. All in all a very pleasant meal in an interesting location."

  • "Excellent food from starter (Brazilian sharing platter), juicy steaks to ice creams and sorbets. Very pleasant surroundings and friendly, efficient service. A thoroughly enjoyable evening."

  • "Had a very nice meal here when staying overnight in the area. Very friendly team and excellent choice of freshly cooked food. Good beer and wine."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "We had a super Sunday lunch, the service was very good and the food tasty and well cooked. Hubby who is very specific on how he likes his steak was very happy. We felt that the staff although cheerful and attentive the level of service wasnt intrusive. I would recommend the cherry brûlée and would have to admit I thought I wouldn't ever find a brûlée as good as mine. Definately on our list of to go back to's."

  • "We booked The Great House for Fathers Day and having traveled from London were pleasantly surprised with the warm welcome. Service was attentive and friendly and food was plentiful and tasty. They had an excellent choice of local beers/bitters which our waiter gave us a selection of tasters of. We will def return despite the 1h 45min journey"

  • "We had a fantastic meal, with excellent and very friendly service. The special was brilliant."

  • "Nice country pub/restaurant with lovely calm atmosphere and outside areas. Very friendly staff. Only downside is the limited menu, each time I have gone I have had fish and chips because there is nothing else on the menu. If they offered more choice I would go more often :)"
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "Excellent service and great food. I told them that I was gluten imtolerant and they ensured me that they could modify any order I made gluten free. The atmosphere was fantastic and although the menu initially looks incredibly expensive, you definitely get what you pay for!"

  • "Booked a sunday lunch table for 1st wedding anniversary meal after visiting bodiam castle. Even though we were early at the pub, waitress took us straight to our table without the fuss. the food was simply delicious and service very friendly and attentive. to our surprise the pudding plate has been decorated with lovely anniversary wishes and a candle, very nice touch indeed!!! Well recommended"

  • "I great meal again - particularly like the tables in the lower restaurant with a view of the garden - on a summer's evening anyway!"
    dined on 23/05/2014
  • "We went to the Great House on a Travelzoo Local Deal (@ £39 for two). The food was amazing: flavoursome and beautifully presented. The relaxed atmosphere was just right for an enjoyable meal and good conversation. We will definitely return more often. Y. U. M.!!"

  • "Lovely Sunday lunch at the Great House for my son-in-law's birthday celebration. As ever, the food was very good and the service friendly, efficient and welcoming. The staff also made a huge fuss of my 11-month old granddaughter - including having a high chair in place for her when we arrived. "
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "This place was lovely, great attentive service, well looked after, delicious food and some honest recommendations from the waiter when asked. We will be going back."
    dined on 10/05/2014
  • "We hesitated about booking lunch here because the first glance at the menu seemed pricey. We are so glad we decided to visit. The food was of excellent quality, and much thought had gone into the presentation and mix of textures and flavours. As the old adage goes "you get what you pay for", well this meal was worth every penny. We were a family of 5 with children, and we represented both the fussy eaters and the committed foodies amongst the party and all our needs were amply met, even the beer selection was spot on. We'll be back!"
    dined on 05/05/2014
  • "A beautiful drive to a lovely restaurant. The food was superb and the service and ambience first rate. I cannot recommend this restaurant too highly.. I hope other offers will become available."
    dined on 30/04/2014
  • "Having read previous reviews, I was very disappointed. On booking I'd mentioned we were celebrating a 'special birthday' and requested a table with a view over the garden, however on arrival, a large noisy party were in the dining area our table was not overlooking the garden and no reference was made to our occasion! Having said that, the food was good. Parking was difficult as a large van was part blocking the entrance to the car park and despite mentioning this to the staff, nothing was done. Only one small ladies cloakroom for a large number of guests was also disappointing. Sorry, but that's how it was! Staff were very polite however."
    dined on 30/04/2014
  • " Good place for sunday lunch.Good friendly sevice.Pleasant ambience a cut above your average pub lunch. We had the roast which was good but the full a la carte was also available"
    dined on 27/04/2014
  • "Really good cooking and a lovely location - great after a visit to the nearby Bodiam Castle. Small garden at the rear which is perfect for the kids to run off their desserts. Part of the Elite Pubs Group - will certainly try other pubs in the group if the standard is this good. Service a little slow and inconsistent on our visit. Child friendly."
    dined on 27/04/2014
  • "Service as always impeccable.Atmosphere buzzing. On this occasion, we were too close to next table for 2 & distracted by the noise of next diner +table was next to a locked door leading to beer garden constantly forced open by smokers, despite not being intended exit, interrupting our meal & space. Needed proper signage or no table. mozzarella & tomato starter delicious & fish & chips hearty & non oily. Dessert of panacotta with fruit coulis, however, was a gelatinous mound of vanilla flavour, not a hint of lightness or wobble! & might well have been prepared by a schoolboy. This was disappointing especially as we have had the dish in its proper state before. On this occasion it was not the expected or usual relaxing evening."
    dined on 26/04/2014
  • "I love this place, whether it is just for a drink in the garden or full blown meal. The atmosphere and food is fantastic and it is well priced - especially the open sandwiches and soup. We will definitely be back when we are next in the area."

  • "We chose The Great House as it was a short drive from my mum's house. We went on Easter Day which although busy wasn't an issue. Despite other busy tables & a big celebration going on in a separate annexe the staff were attentive throughout. The choice on the menu was excellent and left us not knowing what to choose. Everything ordered was of a good quality. We all decided to have a pudding which may have been a mistake as the portions were most generous! The tables weren't all crammed in which makes a nice change and we never felt rushed. We wouldn't have any hesitation in recommending The Great House to anyone else but would advise you book first as these guys get busy."

  • "We had a lovely table by the window, the staff are friendly and helpful. The menu was varied and interesting we mainly chose the specials all of which were very good. All the foos delicious and well presented - great wines too! This is very good pub restaurant food with a french influence, a rustic ambience and a pleasurable experience all round."

  • "Friendly&attentive staff.Good ambiance&comfortable sitting.Reflective mirror table is too bright especially my desert was on see-though plate.Delicious cured meat but was stacked on tiny plate, not eye-pleasing&difficult to share.Side vegetable overcooked.3 lettuce leaves with balsamic vinegar was out of place with cooked veg.celeriac pie had good flavor but extremely runny.Pretty Panna cotta soft&creamy but served with 1/6 of a raspberry&just about enough coulis to cover half a panna cotta.Little front parking so we parked at the back&walked through a beautiful garden. My friend is unsteady on feet with sight problem so trouble walking through patio area that has steps that are difficult to see. Side entrance was tricky to get through. "

  • "We had Sunday lunch at the The Great House. The lady at the bar was most unhelpful and informed us our table was for 3pm and it was only 2.30pm, she managed to say it in such a rude way we almost left. The food was ok but nothing great. They were far too busy and couldn't cope. At the end of our meal we were asked to leave our table and finish our drink in the bar as they had people waiting. We had only been at the table for an hour and a half and had only just finished our dessert as the service was so slow. Very strange place. Could be nice but don't go on a busy Sunday"
    dined on 06/04/2014
  • "We came here as usual after an early evening showing at the local cinema. All the Hungarian staff were very friendly and helpful, the meal excellent though I could probably eaten twice as much of my Guinea Fowl and sweet potatoes. My husband had an excellent steak which was large enough to satisfy. We will definitely return."

  • "Enjoyed the setting , the decor and the service. Oh and the food was really good. Would recommend."

  • "Why have a table set right in front of an aga that is not only on but being used constantly throughout the evening!"
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Just to say a big thanks to Alex and his lovely staff for yet another great meal. We always feel so welcome and looked after. To start we had a few plates of San Daniele ham. It was a nice simple starter with bread and olives. Our party had lamb rump-superb, lamb Navarin-very tasty. I hate lamb but have to admit it smelt amazing. We also had the fish board which is a firm favourite. Just love the calamari. Puds were ice cream, the espresso coffee flavour is smooth but not too sweet and cheese which is always great value for money. The Stilton and Wookey Hole cheddar were excellent. Overall a really nice evening. Enjoyed so much we have booked for next Fri."
