A to notch family dinner for 8,
enjoyed an excellent experience. The menu is diverse, plenty of options across the age groups and tastes, polite attentive attitude very good indeed."

This is my favourite restaurant
since my partner found it last year. My daughter wanted to meet in another restaurant I recommended here, the food is of outstanding standard with a little something special. There is always the specials board and we all had 3 courses which we normally don't do - I haven't eaten all day and neither had my daughter so we could enjoy our meal here. The food is always piping hot and fresh, the portions are big and the desserts are to die for-I can personally recommend the pink champagne sorbet and the rest of the party can recommend the ice creams. We arrived at 7.15pm and left at 10pm we were not rushed If you want something that little extra special both food and experience come here you wont be disappointed"

Beautiful pub with great gardens
and a lovely old world feel, some good walks near by and a quiet location. excellent for a family sunday roast."

Another lovely evening at The Gun.
Delicious food - we had chicken satay and baby spinach salad, followed by chicken burger and Sussex herring with baby veg. All perfectly cooked and presented. The pub was very busy but service was very good, with friendly and professional staff.we booked a table next to the window in the garden room, which was ideal for a hot summer's evening. The lovely garden and beautiful. Jews enhance the dining experience."

We had dinner there last Friday
and were actually a little disappointed. I had the Bream with mini vegetables, the fish was fairly tasteless and had very little of the orange sauce and the vegetables were 4 tiny carrots and 3 cooked spring onions, hardly mini-vegetables, new potatoes had no mint. My wife's seafood linguini was however excellent and good value with lots of crab and prawns. She then had the cherry tart which had been packed out with polenta or similar and the crust was hard. My chocolate marquise was tasty but too small and melting ice cream? At £74.0 with wine we thought too expensive and not enough content! As a pescatarian I also found the slab of ham leg on open view for carving nearby rather offensive!"

The Gun Inn is not just another
country pub; it has managed to capture both the country feel of a good pub but mixed with a fun atmosphere. This is nearly all down to the staff who are so friendly at the same time as being professional and polite. Food is really good with an excellent choice, dogs were made very welcome with water bowls put down for them which was a lovely touch. The vegetarian options were very good and the staff were open to us mixing up the options to provide us with a more interesting dining experience."

My wife and I enjoyed a very good
lunch at the Gun - we were on the way to visit Farley Farm which is nearby . It's a well run pub with very good food, impeccable service and good ambiance."
dined on 15/07/2014
Unfriendly greeting. One of us was
a veggie, as option for starter and main both salad, my friend asked for a plate of mozzarella and tomato, the waiter said the chef was far too busy but he would ask. I don't think he even made it as far as kitchen to ask as was back within seconds and said no. We therefore had no starter. The main was ok, pudding lovely. We have always had good service when we have visited before but this time very unhelpful and uncaring. The vegetation options were poor and we have found other places are very accommodating in changing food slightly to our requirements. I don't think we will be back which is a shame."
dined on 28/06/2014
We went with some friends to The
Gun on Saturday evening - the restaurant was full so pleased we had booked in advance. Whole experience was excellent - will certainly be back. The Thai Beef Salad for starter was delicious, the scallops were fabulous, and a nice touch with the cheese board (you can order which ones take your fancy). Well done and thank you."

Beautiful summer evening so really
enjoyed dining in garden room. Food is quite pricey but delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. Sampled bream and chicken "burger". All delicious and full of flavour. Washed down with recommended Gin and elderflower tonic - a really refreshing long summer drink. Ice cream and raspberry brûlée for dessert (not too sure about the slate plate tho'!) service friendly and efficient. Our waiter was really charming! Have eaten here many times but tonight was especially good."
dined on 07/06/2014
We went for Sunday lunch and was a
bit disappointed, I ordered a starter that included a duck egg and is was very under cooked when it arrived, so my partner had to wait while they sorted the dish out, he ordered a pancake dish that was so under seasoned that it had no flavour ! sadly the staff are fantastic but the chef needs a bit of a shake up, and the prices sem to have shot up as well it will be a while before we eat there again"
dined on 18/05/2014
We went back for the second time
in as many weeks and took some friends. We had told them how good it was but there is always a worry when you rave about somewhere that it will be disappointing .Our worries were unfounded, in fact it was even better the second visit and I had possibly the best meal that I have had for a long time. The staff remembered us and made us feel very welcome and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately we realised after we left that we hadn't tipped them, a mix up when we paid, so a good excuse to go back again and put that right."
dined on 10/05/2014
We go for an evening meal from
time to time here, as the pub itself is lovely and the food and service consistently good. We were slightly disappointed when we came for a family Sunday lunch over the Bank Holiday weekend, as service was very slow (due to a large party of more than 30) and the Sunday roast very average with horrid roast potatoes. Do hope that it was just the big party slowing things down and not the food quality and chef's standards slipping ..........."

We have been to the gun on many
occasions from weddings to birthdays and always enjoy it , great food , friendly team , and love the new section ,really opens up the whole restaurant !!! Will be back again soon "
dined on 27/04/2014
This is offcially my favourite
country pub. The service is excellent, food great and they have a fantastic selection of beers/bitters etc. The pub has recently been extended and a decked terrace added to the garden which has play equipment for the kids. There a re also a couple of short circular walks which are enjoyable. Highly recommended. "
dined on 27/04/2014
We enjoyed our evening very much
but felt that the enlarged restaurant had not been matched by greater kitchen capacity."
dined on 26/04/2014
Such lovely staff who made us very
welcome. Service was excellent as was the food. Two of our party had the Lamb which was incredible tender and cooked to perfection. The other main courses our party had were the Fish and Chips (which was huge) and beautifully cooked and the Spare Ribs which just fell off the bone. I would like to see maybe one or two more choices on the Specials Board. The desserts were delicious. We will definitely recommend to others and will return ourselves in the not too distant future."
dined on 26/04/2014
This wasn't our first choice, but
on attempting to book the Great Room in Hawkhurst, on a recommendation, and discovering it full I turned to the list of "sister pubs" on the Elite Pub Company website. What a treat, great staff, atmosphere and food, we will visit again."
dined on 26/04/2014
A great roast lunch, excellent
starters and good quality kids food - albeit the pasta didn't please our son for reasons not to do with the restaurant. Inspired touch of a chocolate bunny for the kids at the end of the meal. Finally some chcoloate... :-)"
dined on 20/04/2014
We booked the Gun Pub for a family
celebration having regularly visited here before. The food is always great, the staff are attentive and the setting both inside and out Is lovely. My only negative feedback would be the limited menus and also the patio area outside. The steps down to the garden are really dangerous! Three of my family lost their footing on these steps due to the design and colouring of the paving. This is a real hazard and I'm surprised that as a business the design has passed a health and safety inspection."
dined on 19/04/2014
We went at Easter and had a lovely
evening meal with my son and his partner we all enjoyed it very much. Strange waiter though... "
dined on 18/04/2014
Great food and very attentive
service. There is a lovely garden with a decking area, which will be super in the summer. There are various country walks which start and end in the pub garden, which are between 3-5 miles long. Would highly recommend."
dined on 06/04/2014
Kept being pushed to order more
drinks when we had full glasses, we moved tables because we were seated right in the sun, when we moved we were moaned at. I ordered Tapas platter with pear salad, when it arrived the salad was just 2 pieces of lettace. not good for £12.95, I have dined there before and it has always been good but now seems to have gone downhill, we will not return"
dined on 16/03/2014
Had our dinner in the new
extension which has a lovely feel to it. The food was lovely, we had a mixture of menu options and specials both for main and desserts. We were a group of four. The outside area looks like it has been improved so hoping to visit in the day for lunch."
dined on 08/03/2014
This was a new discovery for me -
a secluded beautiful setting in the country with a warm atmosphere. Staff were attentive and very helpful (and very knowledgable about wine) the food was slightly expensive but well worth the money. Between the four of us we tried fresh plaice with a risotto with a hint of lime which went together really well, good old haddock and chips - no complaints about that, a Sussex smokie - perfect and a rump of lamb with swede mash which was excellently cooked. Puddings were delightful too The pub offers a range of walks with leafllets and map ranging from a half hour stroll to a 4 hour yomp that start and end at the pub - there are 10 in all - for me this guarantees 10 Sunday lunches over the summer."
dined on 07/03/2014
We have eaten here twice in the
last two weeks and both times the food and service have been excellent. For some reason, on our most recent visit on a Thursday evening we had to wait a very long time for our meal. No explanation was given but they did apologise. This is unusual and we will be going back."
dined on 20/02/2014
This is becoming one of my
favourite eating places, very friendly staff, great service, great food and no problems with children or dogs."
dined on 16/02/2014
Loved the olives and sharing
platter. Following a good start the sea bass was so good that considered to be best ever eaten. Nice option to be able to decide what cheeses you wanted from a good list. Service good and not pushy as described in recent review."
dined on 12/02/2014
Could have been a lovely meal.
Foods good, although lack of real vegetable.( ie tips of carrots instead of actually carrots) Why?? Veg that we had were nice and fresh. But such a small portion more like a garnish,But actual meat etc was good. Although service was attentive and good. It became tiresome, when you are constantly being pushed to order more. Surely if a customer says: No thank you' It's not then the policy to get the waiter/waitress to try to talk you into it and for you to end up in a sort of battle to get the message over that you don't want it!!!!!! I guess it is the Policy of the house and don't blame the staff. But it has definitely lost our custom to return,so has been detrimental to there cause."
dined on 08/02/2014
We had a lovely meal for my
husband's birthday. The starters were excellent (pate, fried brie and soup). My son had the children's burger which he thought was delicious and he is very finicky. Our mains were very nice (portions were very large). Our group had a burger, fish and chips and the fried egg ham and chips. My husband struggled with the burger as it was very big with all the trimmings. Puddings were divine - creme brûlée, melting chocolate pudding and ice creams with some very unique flavours. The service was friendly and approachable. I have just re-booked for Sunday lunch and hope that the meal is equally as nice!"

We are regulars to The Gun and
have never been let down. This was the second time we've parked at The Gun and taken one of their suggested walks arriving back in time for a welcome Sunday lunch. This time we brought four of our friends who were visiting us for the weekend and all were very complimentary about our choice of pub. The menu has a good choice of food cooked to a high standard with fresh ingredients. the last time I had the Sunday roast which was one of the best pub roasts I've had. This time I ordered fish pie which was delicious. I have a 10% loyalty card for this group of pubs and in the last 6 months since I moved to East Sussex have made great use of it. I strongly recommend The Gun."
dined on 02/02/2014
Always a warm welcome. Many
different dining options. Brand new bright conservatory ambience one end on a sunny day. This will be great with the garden in the summer. Cosy winter options in the older part of the pub with open fire blazing. On to the food and drink - Very good value long term staples such as "The Sussex Smokie" (a hot Haddock dish which has been perfected) and "Dublin pie" (Beef with mushrooms rather than kidney) to more adventurous culinary alternatives. I would have been happy choosing many of the options. We have also, in the past, had traditional Sunday roasts, and the Limousin beef has been excellent. Extensive reasonably priced wine list with something for all, but we usually have a pint or two of Harveys !!"
dined on 27/01/2014
Very good Sunday roast looked and
tasted very homemade. Will be going back for more"
dined on 26/01/2014
We had a wonderful Sunday lunch.
The restaurant was very busy and the service quite slow, but that didn't bother us as we were in no hurry. The staff were very welcoming and very helpful. I would definitely recommend for Sunday lunch!"
dined on 12/01/2014
As usual we had a lovely meal at
the Gun. It had a welcoming real fire going and friendly staff made it a relaxed enjoyable evening"
dined on 11/01/2014
Yet again they provided an
excellent meal with excellent service, loving the Kozal Lager."
dined on 10/01/2014
First class service, very tasty
and well presented food. lovely ambience."
dined on 01/01/2014
It was my first time at the Gun
and I will be going back there. Good food and service in a lovely country location."
dined on 28/12/2013
We have eaten here before and sat
in the main area of the pub which has been great. Unfortunately on this occasion, we were a table of four placed in the new garden room, which is pleasant with views over the garden, but the other two tables were for parties of twelve and fourteen, and consequently was very noisy, and it was extremely difficult for us to hear each other speak. This wasn't because the other tables were being excessively loud, it was purely down to the acoustics of the room, of which the staff were aware, as our waiter kept on apologising for the noise. We will definitely return, but would request not to be in the garden room. Possibly in the warmer months when the patio doors are open it won't be such a problem."
dined on 26/12/2013
I like the Gun as it always
delivers. We've hardly been this year which is no reflection on them - simply I've been away a lot. However, I was instantly recognised on arrival and we were treated perfectly as always. The food is always of a very high level and even though they were very busy and we were advised that our mains could take a little longer than normal, there was no delay at all. If you love your ham, ask for some cuts with some bread instead of a starter - always delicious. The Smokie's always worth a try - I'd always have as a starter - it's a bit rich for a main. Do try and book as they can get quite busy. Would happily recommend to one and all."
