Diner Reviews
  • "Good English Food and game nice ambiance and lots of good beer to try plus a good variety of wine loved it"
    dined on 27/08/2014
  • "I had seen a lot of good reviews about the gun. We we arrived, the restaurant had run out of half of the mains and starters. The service was rushed and the staff made us feel like we had to eat quickly. The food was disappointing, the wines were overpriced. I would not recommend the gun."

  • "We had another great Sunday lunch and ordered the beef and deer for our main courses. As always the portions are generous, the meat melted in our mouths and the veg and potatoes cooked to perfection. We have never had a poor meal. The service is always most attentive and the ambience good. A great place and a great find tucked away in Coldharbour."

  • "Lovely old school pub with ample inside and outside space and good selection of beers. The restaurant opens onto the front bar, which is mainly sit down so you get the atmosphere and buzz without excessive noise. The food is divine. A great place for meat and game and our sirloin steak on the bone for two easily fed three (we had starters and dessert) and was tender and delicious. We shared the fish special, cod tongue, cheek and neck with beans as a starter with some sides. Another fine and earthy dish, and the turnip gratin is a real winner. Desserts very good too, warm apple cake with various apple flavours and deep, rich and fruity summer pudding although one guest thought their ice cream wasn't creamy enough. And the staff are lovely."

  • "I came already several times to the Gun and it was already outstanding!!!! This time I invited my family, which I just see one time per year, and this time the service and overall experience was just horrible. I booked a table on the terrace, when I came the waiter said that it's not possible, then he found a table in your dining room, which is not as far so good as the terrace. My parents ordered some oysters, crayfish and crabs, and everything was not available, even if it was written on the menu. The topic was that you even run out of all your port, except one. I am working in the same business, so I understand these problems, but normally a good waiter can see if the costumer is not happy. After this time I am not sure to come back."

  • "We booked The Gun last minute for a celebratory dinner with family. Everyone loved the dishes they chose, we were impressed with the service and the ability to move our booking to an earlier time during the booking confirmation call. We all had three courses, which was too much food, but the menu was tempting and the food was brilliant. One person is a vegetarian, a second person dairy free and both were able to ask for slight adjustments to dishes without fuss from the kitchen. A brilliant evening was enjoyed by all."

  • "The Gun is in a fantastic setting right on the Thames. Food was excellent. Would definitely recommend to friends and family."

  • "Really nice food but let down by rushed and brusque service. Very expensive."

  • "Relaxed ambience, friendly. Food is ok, little bit overpriced."

  • "It was the first time all 6 of our party had been to the Gun and we all enjoyed our meal. The starters were very good and well presented. Mains were the usual roasts for Sunday lunch which were good but could have been hotter. Puddings looked stunning but we were all too full to have one. The wine list was OK nothing different on offer. Would we go back, yes I think we would."

  • "Very nice food service great very friendly staff. Lovely atmosphere, lovely setting overlooking the river"
    dined on 27/07/2014
  • "Our second visit was as good as the first. Excellent service, very good food. The Sunday roasts especially were good value. We haven't yet managed to book a table at one of the tables with a river view - it's justifiably a very popular place - but the main dining room is very pleasant too and it was good to take coffee out by the water in the sunny Gin Garden."

  • "Amazing setting, emmaculate service and spectacular food all go to making a meal at the Gun one of the best you will ever have."
    dined on 25/07/2014
  • "All very good apart from the roast pork which was left not pink but actually raw inside, as if it had been beef. The guinea fowl was fantastic. Waiter was very attentive and nice."

  • "Delicious food in an atmospheric setting, a pleasant walk from Canary Wharf tube station."

  • "It was a lovely hot day and 4 or us had a table outside by the water. It was lovely. We all had the fish finger sandwich and chips which was really tasty. We will be back again!"

  • "This was my first time there, and was the right place for me and my partner. We love it,very good service, delicious food and a very friendly staff. I recommend it."

  • "On reflection, we had an enjoyable meal a The Gun. Our starters, the smoked chicken terrine and charred lettuce/soft boiled egg were disappointing maybe because we had very high expectations. The steak & pork main courses were good. The anchovy dressing on the lamb wasn't to our taste - the meat was lovely though. The creme brulee was delicious. Couldn't tell the chocolate mousse was praline - but it was still good and the banana ice cream was delicious too. Unrequested the waitress said she wouldn't charge us service as it had been slow. Which it wasn't, so we tipped them anyway. My opinion of restaurants that err on the side of the customer is its a reflection of the general ambiance they create."

  • "My second visit, food is really great every time. The style of the pub is really nice with good quality sit down pub dining and a lively bar area. The bar just can get a little loud when you're trying to have a dinner conversation nearby, but the place has an atmosphere. Love the view of the dome and the great service. Our waitress was very nice. Recommendable!"

  • "Dinner at the Gun was outstanding as usual. Superb food, fantastic service and always a great atmosphere. Definitely the number one pub in London"
    dined on 25/06/2014
  • " Was a little disappointed with my visit especially I was taking family for a treat. The choice was more limited than shown on the website Sunday lunch menu and as we were a late sitting there were no specials. We had the roasts and the carrots were too hard to eat and the pork wasn't as hot as I would have liked. The scallop starter at £12 was. Dry disappointing. A very small amount of baby queen scallops. Compared to the rabbit starter it was over priced and under sized. The main waitress was excellent and gave good service but when she was on her break the others were less attentive and drinks took longer to come. Shame as I've been 3 times recently and had good quality food. Won't go again on a Sunday."
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "The location is a little off the path, which we liked since we got out of the tourist type areas. We went for sunday roast. Excellent food and a great ambiance right on the river. Everyone was friendly and wonderful. Eating outside was great."
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "Excellent venue with superb food. Arrived on time but was not rushed to order so were able to have drinks outside by the river. Beautiful building, a real hidden gem in the Isle of Dogs."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Amazing view of the O2 and an active and interesting part of the Thames - literally just the other side of the wall from where you sit. Fantastic friendly service and truly scrumptious food. Wonderful place to hang out for an afternoon before a concert at the O2. Thank-you The Gun for a great experience"
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "Really disappointed, 16 people is to many for the gun to deal with."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "Most beautiful pub! Just gorgeous,, fab food, really a great experience."
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "Probably due to the extensive hype about this gastro-pub expectations were running high and I was left feeling a little disappointed. By any pub standard the food was of high quality but somehow lacked finesse in flavour and cooking. Perfectly pleasant but expensive."
    dined on 13/06/2014
  • "Excellent location within easy reach of Canary Wharf and away from the major chain restaurants. Great history and feel to the venue. Service is outstanding and nothing is too much trouble even on the first day of a new menu. Food cooked to perfection. Claire was a great host and made sure that we enjoyed the meal and the after dinner drinks on the deck."
    dined on 09/06/2014
  • "I have used The Gun on several occasions for client entertainment now and have always been very pleased with the quality of food and service, the specials are always worth trying. The service is attentive but in no way overbearing."
    dined on 09/06/2014
  • "Had a lovely meal, well presented and cooked. My only gripe is there is not enough room to have a drink at the bar if you arrive early. "
    dined on 07/06/2014
  • "This is a great little restaurant, especially in the summer when you can drink on the terrace overlooking the dome. You can't reserve tables on the terrace apparently so it's first come first serve if you want to eat with a view."
    dined on 07/06/2014
  • "With family in London from overseas we wanted to share with them the ye olde world feel of The Gun, while enjoying brilliant food. The fact the sun was out and we had post lunch drinks in the Gin Garden was an unexpected bonus."
    dined on 01/06/2014
  • "Nice views over the river. Service is good and the food of a good quality and well presented BUT it is expensive for what you get. Main courses include minimal vegetables so sides are a must unless you have a very small appetite. However £4 for a serving of new potatoes is a rip-off, each other vegatable side is the same price so you are best off ordering several and sharing. One of us ordered steak and the other 7 enviously eyed the size of it."

  • "Been to the Gun a few times as i work in Canary Wharf and its a lovely little pub to trek down to (about 5-10 minute walk from Canada Square) It has a lovely outdoor space but when we were there this week it was raining so we sat in their sheltered terrace with outdoor heaters with a table overlooking the river. The staff are soooo lovely and very attentive, we were impressed :) The food is very yummy and reasonably priced. This is my favourite place to go to if i want to meet friends for lunch during the week. If you've not been you should make a plan to check it out, i promise you will be impressed! "

  • "The Gun was a nice little pub with some decent beers and wines available. Food was a little mixed and service was nothing special. Beef shin was delicious, cooked well while being tasty. The orange duck was a little disappointing. This was served pink for tenderness, as duck should be, however, instead of being tender the meat was a little chewy, plus the dish's flavour didn't seem to compensate for the disappointing meat. This could have just been this batch of meat as the shin was delicious. We both had deserts which were fantastic. Well made with great balanced tastes. For the price paid we felt a little let down for the full meal. However, I would recommend The Gun for dessert and a drink on the terrace with a nice Thames view. "

  • "Good meal, Dexter beef delicious and two first courses. Generous portions, no room for pudding. Service too fast, we finished well within our 2 hour slot, so that detracted from what was a special evening out. Lovely pub in interesting area. Restaurant very noisy, tables too close together. Staff very welcoming. "
    dined on 24/05/2014
  • "We had a late booking--for which the waiters thanked us as a big party had arrived before us and were monopolising the chef's energies. Our food was excellent--the specials of the day. Wine v pricey and the acoustic v poor so we had trouble talking at the table. Maybe this would be overcome if you had a fine day for sitting outside, but it's also near the traffic so I don't know. A couple who obviously wanted to be together (as well as eat well) had the back corner table from 9.30 so their experience of the place might have affected the booking!"

  • "Conducted a business dinner there and is was a very nice overall experience. Food, service, wine etc. A classy off the beaten path place. I look forward to going again."

  • "The Gun is ideally situated on the Thames with stunning views of the O2 and the river. Outside dining (covered and non-covered) is definately recommended although the interior dining/bar is a postcard of what people imagine a English pub to be. Hard to fault anything really, great beer including real ales, fantastic service. The Sunday lunch is easily the best in the area, although you do pay on the higher end for it - the pork lunch with crackling is perfect though. I've dined here many times, usually in the evening after work and never had a bad experience and it has a nice varied menu."
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "Alhough the food was good, especially the dessert, I found the helpings less than generous. Mash was clearly from powder. I thought the menu was a bit pretentious: no mention of anything along the lines of pie or fish and chips. It's a pub after all. It was too cold for the open air terrace, but the riverside gallery by night has quite a view. That's not where you eat though, that's where you drink."
