A word from The India Restaurant
For an atmospheric Indian meal only a stone’s throw from London’s Cannon Street station, The India restaurant delivers every time. This snug 'n' cosy restaurant is set entirely underground in a series of three dining rooms each decorated individually with whitewashed vaulted ceilings and comfy leather chairs, and the intimate setting is perfect for dinner parties and celebrations. Popular with City types, commuters and curry-lovers alike, The India has an extensive menu which features classic curries such as jalfrezies and balti masalas, and the restaurant's signature dish is the thali – a selection of traditional dishes presented in small bowls on a round tasting platter. The chef prides himself on creating classic renditions of the subcontinent’s most exclusive gastronomy – Vintage Indian cuisine. Unobtrusive, seamless service is the byword here. It’s no surprise that The India is busy at lunch and with an after-work crowd, and has a popular private dining room for events.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We went for an early dinner prior to watching Shakespeare at The Globe. Location-wise it was perfect and within walking distance (about 10 mins. We ordered the butter chicken, dahl and lamb strips (can't remember the sauce). The lamb was average and a bit on the sweet side. The dahl was one of the worst I've eaten and not very tasty. The butter chicken was good, but it's hard to get that dish wrong. The rice and bread were good and fresh. Overall the experience was only OK. Too expensive for what you get and a very westernised Indian food experience."

  • "Great ambience, good service. Food is average - not bad, not so good. There's better Indian menus out there. Drinks are good esp the non-alcoholic cocktails. Go for proximity to the City (if you work there) and ambience."

  • "For a restaurant based in The City, I was impressed at how nice the food was and how the service was. We have 50% off food, with that then its very good value but otherwise for two people our bill would have been £100. The lighting was a bit too low, I had to use my phone to see the menu, otherwise I definitely recommend going, regardless of budget (although if watching money just don't get any alcohol)."

  • "Really a hidden secret, the food never disappoints. And they even showed the world cup at this time, good service and been many times before, with the toptable deal, one of the best indians in the city!"

  • "Really good best place to eat after work In London I keep coming back "

  • "Good service, great food, 50% off food which was an added bonus. Very intimate. Great for any occasion, give it a go, you wont be dissatisfied. "

  • "Very good as always. Food excellent, good value (plus 30% discount despite it being a Friday). Staff are always welcoming and attentive (without being intrusive). Would recommend for either smaller dinners or big groups."

  • "Cracking food. Had my standard test of a dhansak, very nice although was fairly expensive even with a 30% discount."

  • "My husband and I live in Paris now but really miss a decent 'British' Indian. The food here was very good it was hot, fresh and the service was spot on. Quite a whacky venue in the cellar but largely my eyes were on the cuisine. I would recommend it and definitely go again "

  • "We (2 couples) decided to try The India primarily because it showed up at the top on Opentable being close to Bank station and also it had 50% off. It was one of those days when we were after a regular Indian, not a fancy high end restaurant. On reaching the place we were pleasantly surprised by the overall decor and courteous staff. However,as soon as mentioned about the 50% off offer their attitude changed slightly and they went to discuss with the manager. On of them then picked up the complimentary poppadums he had placed on our table only to place them back after removing half of them. I found this rude and very bad customer service. Not going there again as I'd rather pay more and eat at a restaurant that treats customers with respect"

  • "Enjoyed a Friday evening meal. Good service, well spiced food. Prices could be a little lower."

  • "Lot of choice...a la carte, set menus, chef specials. however if you book the -30% off food, then you can't pick from the set menus. The restaurant is underground and the ceiling is shaped like that of a cellar. Whilst it has its charm it means the place becomes very noisy very quickly. We went there on a Friday evening, for dinner, and although the place was far from full when we arrived, we were very uncomfortable with the surrounding noise. We told the staff and they moved us to a table closer to the entrance, and we were glad we asked, as the noise would have ruined the experience. We were 4 adults with 2 kids. one bad thing is that is was too dark where we first sat, reading the menu was a challenge in that light.."

  • "Great restaurant, completely unexpected for the location but really good food - much better than any restaurant on Brick Lane. Highly recommend."

  • "Though the restaurant is off the track and offered 50% off food we were positively surprised by it's food quality. The variety on the venue and selection of dishes was excellent and all we tasted (platter) was delicious and cooked well. Portions were also very good."

  • "Really good food in pleasant environment and friendly staff. Definitely recommended "

  • "Wouldn't have discovered this had it not been for Toptable. Excellent meal, good service - and a 30% off food offer made it very good value. Will certainly return. "

  • "I have been here several times now and it never lets me down. One of the best curries at a restaurant in London. Great for after work dinner or a night out with friends."

  • "The India is consistent with decent food and service. Portion sizes have somewhat reduced but still satisfactory."

  • "Having discovered this restaurant on Top Table, I have now eaten there twice in the past two weeks. The food is delicious, full of flavours rather than heat. The service was friendly and efficient. Our waiter remembered me on our second visit, which is the sign of good service. Forget Brick Lane and head for The India if you want an exceptionally good Indian meal."

  • "Have been here several times and never had a disappointing meal. It's always the place requested to go to when we have ex-pats visiting. Food is great and service very efficient whether you are a couple or group it make no difference. Onion bhajees divine, along with everything else on the menu!"

  • "We arrived at 7.15 pm to take our choice of the vacant tables amongst a sprinkling of early diners. The restaurant is spacious and nicely lit to create a pleasant ambience. A couple of parties arrived shortly after us and, for once in my experience of parties, they were not unpleasantly loud. For our starter we took the Tandoori platter for two which we thought lacking in flavour. For mains one of us had chicken and the other, lamb. Two lamb meals arrived. The mistake was quickly acknowledged and remedied. The portions were quite generous including the 'ladies fingers', rice, etc. We thought the 'pickle tray' could have been more interesting. We enjoyed the ice cream made with whole milk. We enjoyed Chang beer. Good value."

  • "The food was outstanding as served piping hot as it should be. Not a large choice from the set menu, however food arrived in very large servings and that helped to make the dinner experience longer, prolonging the pleasure. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a good indian meal and when you're feeling particularly hungry! Will return for sure!"

  • "I just love this atmospheric restaurant, with its candlelight and vaults. This was a return visit with friends and, as always, the service and food were excellent. My chicken biryani was really delicious and with the TT 50% offer this was excellent value. My friends were very impressed and I think they will go back. The only issue was the ladies loo, which could definitely do with a bit of a spruce up. Otherwise would definitely recommend."

  • "This is a wonderfully cosy restaurant in a great location. Service was lovely & attentive. Food was delicious. Would recommend - perhaps not for fancy occasions but for a casual dinner it was perfect."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "The waiters seemed a little rushed to get us to start eating which seemed weird as the restaurant was quite empty. But the overall service was good and atmosphere was excellent."

  • "I had always heard friends talk about toptable and thought I would give it a try myself! Booking was easy, the hard part is trying to decide what to eat. I had the lamb which was cooked to perfection. Can't complain at all about the service, food was quick and we were always attended to. When you never have to ask for water now that's service! Atmosphere is great with lit candles. Would definitely be going back :)"

  • "The food would have got an outstanding but for the amount of oil in my main and one of the popaddoms was stale. The service was good although I've had better on previous visits. The Ambience is good but thing that let it down was the music, the volume kept changing. It should be background music, at dinner I don't want to be shouting over the music, which in turn causes everyone else to raise their voices and I end up having to shout over them too. The quality of the food was good but I found the cost of drinks a little too high. Was going to get an apperitif but thought better of it when I saw the price at 5 pounds. I'd go back because the taste of the food was good and previous experience was better, so maybe this was just an off day."

  • "Second visit and a good curry especially with the offer. Always worth a visit."
    dined on 06/03/2014
  • "This place does some very good indian food, and at great prices if you go at lunch especially. I have been disappointed twice now with the experience where I have booked via toptable and been told when i changed my mind and ordered off the main menu instead of the tt offer, that they will cancel my booking therefore i get no points. not happy with this idea... as i still found the place and booked via tt and i am a paying customer! very strange, if they could sort this out i would have much better things to say about it im sure..."

  • "Good value with the Toptable offer. Standard Indian fare, reliably executed and substantial portions. Colleague's lamb shank looked the most impressive dish, but there was a general greasiness in many of the dishes. Service was efficient, and overall a good place for a group booking."

  • "Great service, great meal and also benefited from 50% off food! Would visit again"

  • "Visted on Friday 21st Feb 2014. Dinner for 2, TopTable 30% off food deal. Excellent food, really tasty. Had meat platter to start, South Indian garlic chicken, lamb madrass, garlic naan, cheese naan, pilau rice, large kingfisher, large chang. Came to around £65 inc service, after the 30% discount. Meat was very soft, naan was fantastic. Would recommend if in the area. It's underground, felt a little cramped where we sat."

  • "Food was 'ok', service seemed aggressive and almost ruined our evening."
    dined on 20/02/2014
  • "A little hard to find, and is predominantly downstairs, so don't expect any mobile reception. Food was good and menu was varied catering to all tastes. Service did seem a bit aggressive at one point when the waiter advised us not to order our starters until we had decided on mains, although I think there was some confusion and really he just wanted us to order out mains before it got too busy. We insisted on ordering them separately, and there was no delay at all."
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "As ever the India provides great food and wine. But the staff need a refresher course - a dropped fork and having to remind them twice about the drinks order rather spoils the otherwise great ambience."
    dined on 12/02/2014
  • "A last minute decision to find an Indian in the City on a weekend. A nice little find. Good starters, decent mains - the chicken bhuna was very salty but the naan was superb. With 50% it was a very cheap meal for 2 - £30 with the 12.5 % service. Would come back if in the area but would make the trip especially."
