A word from The Jugged Hare
Head chef, Richard O’Connell, takes charge of the open kitchen, adding an element of theatre to the dining room, which is complete with a state-of-the-art eight-spit rotisserie and charcoal grill, expect to seasonal game such as haunch of venison, mallard and wild boar. Hearty feast menus, available for parties and families, and a selection of traditional Sunday roasts, from whole roasted suckling pig to leg of spring lamb, will make The Jugged Hare an ideal weekend destination too. Wild fish and shellfish handpicked at Billingsgate will also feature strongly on the menu. The hottest seats are located at the pass - pull up a stool to see Richard and his brigade in action.
For those looking for a traditional pub environment, head to the bar with its display of exclusively sourced antique British taxidermy, traditional anaglypta wallpaper ceiling and original oak whisky barrel high tables and chairs.

Diner Reviews
  • "Had dinner at 8.00pm last Sunday. We were 5. Received an email the day before asking for confirmation of the booking and a call the morning of the meal. I'd booked for 5 people. On arrival at the allotted time, I was told that the table wasn't ready and was directed to the bar area. I returned to the reception area 20 minutes later to be told that the table hadn't been vacated by the previous diners. I told the 'receptionist' that this was unacceptable and asked for another table… 3 minutes later we were directed to a table. The food was rather expensive with a number of items not available."

  • "very interesting place good vibe, great decoration, nice menu selection, friendly service, interesting food but lacked just a little bit in the flavour category"

  • "Because I was at an event next door, I ended up at The Jugged Hare two evenings in a row. Both times, the service was good, the food was great, and the ambiance fitting what I would expect from this calibre of restaurant. Had the skate wing one night, the lobster the other. Both beautifully prepared and presented."

  • "Visited this restaurant at 7pm on a Friday, good service (and booked on the day). Food is fairly pricey but very good. Would highly recommend the purple potatoes as a side, DELICIOUS. At any rate it doesn't feel much more expensive than most restaurants in Central London - however the portions are very small. Will probably try the jugged hare next time (just for the sake of it), stuck to a safe cod option this time. Squeamish visitors might not like it as there is some impressive taxidermy in the windows. There's a 2-hour limit but this wasn't problematic for my dad and me, I assume it's more flexible for large groups. Overall, I'd recommend it for an occasion when you don't mind splashing out a little more, the food is worth it."

  • "Excellent food! Very good service, will definitely come again"

  • "The Jugged Hare has got it right, amazing menu of traditionally british food, amazingly well prepared, simply presented, quality but not stuffy service, and a relaxed dining atmosphere that makes you feel welcome. If there was any small criticism it would be that the price points seem a little high, but once you have eaten you realise that you are paying for the quality produce, and the skilled chefs preparing the meals. Would recommend and will be back."

  • "The food was delicious and the staff exceptional. They went out of their way to meet my requirement for a 'special' surprise. Thank you"

  • "Amazing food, the staff are outstanding, great wine selection and the specials are always something to be excited about. I had John Dory with Salsa Verde, it was beautiful and cooked to perfection."

  • "Great variety in their specials of the day to compliment the standard daily menu. Very high quality of food albeit slightly more than you'd expect to pay for a pub meal. Would definitely go there again"

  • "This place is always busy and full of bustle. It was a bit too noisy for our lunch on Wednesday but the food and service were impecable as always. I wish them continued sucess."
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "Took a table of 5 for a business meal here and the food and staff were great! Felt at ease and not rushed even though the dining rooms were packed. Water was very good and not fluttering around so really enjoyable experience."

  • "Booked an aftershow dinner, and they delivered. Good food, nice portions and OK price."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "The decor is fantastic, feels fancy yet comfortable , everything that you want on a Saturday afternoon. Service was great and food delicious, my only negative is that the tennis was extremely loud in the bar so we had an interesting mix of music in the restaurant and tennis commentary."

  • "We were looked after incredibly well and I have to say it was the best Roast :) Thanks!"
    dined on 29/06/2014
  • "Great restaurant and ambiance. Staff were very attentive - knowledgeable about the menu and pleasant. Food menu broad and interesting - very meaty (but that didn't put me off as a pescetarian!) I ate kiln smoked salmon - very tasty and served with an imaginative salad. My friend had a baby chicken with a lovely salad. The other diner, a teenager, had a huge pie which was very generously filled with tender meat. There were a couple of vegetarian options (although the over all restaurant may not appeal to all vegetarians). A good wine selection also. Would definitely go again."

  • "Fine food and wine. Great selection of wine by the glass. Highly recommended"
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "I was disappointed because our food was cold (moules/frites) - think it had been sitting for a while before it came to the table. Although the waiting staff were generally very good , they didn't ask if the food was ok after we received it which I think is usually done. Only asked when they came to clear the plates"

  • "Superb modern English food, Efficent service only one set back tne noise..."
    dined on 25/06/2014
  • "We have eaten here quite regularly but it's lost it's way on all levels. Something has changed and its not of rate good"
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "We booked this for a special occasion and the pub itself is very lovely and the food was also good. I wouldn't say any of our meals were outstanding or as good as I expected but they were nice. Unfortunately the staff were not so nice, one lady in particular who was our waitress. She was quite rude and other staff members were seen to be pulling faces and whispering about other customers whenever they went into the kitchen. It wasn't a pleasant atmosphere."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Food is good value; perhaps too much background noise for a business lunch."
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "The food very was nice but portion size was small, definitely need all 3 courses to fill you up. Great ambience but the service is slow, took a very long time before they came to take our order for both mains and dessert."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "We went to the Jugged Hare for their nice Sunday lunch menu. On arrival bar area very pleasant and the same with the restaurant. The menu was diverse and each dish was tasty and a high standard. Atmosphere in the restaurant for Sunday lunch was a bit dry and too many staff hanging around near our table. Maybe the evening serve has more atmosphere. Overall a very nice experience and would go back."
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "The rhubarb and apple pie brought tears to my eyes. Everything was perfect, for a price though, hence post theatre would be the best option. "
    dined on 07/06/2014
  • "The rib-eye steak was really good and juicy. Langoustines for starter were tasteful. Will go back."

  • "Lovely ambience and good food. Must visit if you are in the square mile "
    dined on 30/05/2014
  • "Booked for an after theatre meal being so close to the Barbican. Staff were very obliging in changing our booking at last minute and were attentive and good humoured throughout the meal. Starters were delicious, main course even more so (we had the market fish option) but the desserts were to die for. As always, you look at what other diners have and we thought we must try the Sunday roast next time as that looked extremely tempting. Despite the widely publicised restriction on time, we were not hurried or told that we could only have the table for two hours. The bar also serves a good selection of beers and is well worth trying before the meal."
    dined on 25/05/2014
  • "I asked for a special table but they just put us in the middle of a long row. In general, a very expensive gastropub, not many choices. Good bread and butter, but overall an average value for money"
    dined on 24/05/2014
  • "Went to a group lunch here last week. Seated as soon as we entered the restaurant. Overall the service was okay but could have been better. We were not told that they had any specials and only saw them on the board after we had ordered. And I waited for ages for a waiter to come to our table so I could get some water. They could have been attentive. My fish dish was heavenly and I wouldn't hesitate to go back and order it again. Bustling place but not too noisy. I would recommend it but they need to improve on the service."
    dined on 21/05/2014
  • "It's good to see the same staff here as when I visited last year, Richard was especially good, knew his stuff! Will return again"

  • "This is the best roast dinner I have found so far in London."
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "Very interesting menu but fish of the day was salmon at £42 which is a little outragous. Nice atmosphere and good service."
    dined on 12/05/2014
  • "The restaurant was full at 3.30 on a Sunday afternoon, which was a good sign. The food was very good as was the service and ambience. "

  • "We have Sunday lunched very happily (service, food etc) here 3 times in past but not in last 9 months Returned this Sunday and very disappointed. Long wait for receptionist (on phone) to acknowledge we were waiting to be seated. Eventually seated with menus but no wine list. Restaurant about 1/3 full but no sign of service or drink being offered for 5 minutes or so, despite several staff in evidence. Signalled a waiter can we order some drinks? not from me but will speak to your waiter, returned to front of restaurant where at least 4 staff talking, after a conference to decide someone is assigned and are you ready to order? We wanted some drinks first. Only after requests were a wine list provided and specials described. Food was so so"

  • "This is where we choose to eat before going to an evening at the Barbican or Milton Court. The food is always excellent and the staff friendly and efficient. Do go if you are in this area. "
    dined on 29/04/2014
  • "Reading the menu you would be forgiven for keen anticipation, but it's just skin deep. Small portions, unremarkable food given the enthusiastic descriptions, lethargic service (lunch). The wine list is rather good though, if pricey. Overall designed not for the satisfaction of the client but the profit margin of the owner. At this prime location most probably won't care. However this is basically a pub with a small restaurant. I would stick to the pub"

  • "Slightly more towards the restaurant end of the gastropub/restaurant scale of dining. In the pub area at the front of the restaurant we had been worried about the accoustics, as plain walls and wooden floors had meant we strained to hear each other. Luckily, the dininig area's accoustics are softened, meaning we didn't have to shout acorss the table. Service was friendly and prompt without being overbearing. My other half approved of his steak, saying it was better than one he had had in Hawksmoor. My fishcake was good too, the buttered greens that came with it being a stand out for me. I was slightly disappointed by my popcorn icecream - perhaps just a bad choice by me. Overall, a great meal close to the Barbican."

  • "We enjoyed an early supper before going onto a concert, the food was delicious the staff were excellent and it was most enjoyable."
    dined on 19/04/2014
  • "The dressed crab came straight from the fridge and had very little taste. The wild boar was very heavy and fatty. I ordered a 175 ml glass of Riesling with the start, it cost £9.80 and it was not very good and it had too much spritz. The 12.5% service charge is a cheeky habit for this and many places now in London."
