A word from The Jugged Hare
Head chef, Richard O’Connell, takes charge of the open kitchen, adding an element of theatre to the dining room, which is complete with a state-of-the-art eight-spit rotisserie and charcoal grill, expect to seasonal game such as haunch of venison, mallard and wild boar. Hearty feast menus, available for parties and families, and a selection of traditional Sunday roasts, from whole roasted suckling pig to leg of spring lamb, will make The Jugged Hare an ideal weekend destination too. Wild fish and shellfish handpicked at Billingsgate will also feature strongly on the menu. The hottest seats are located at the pass - pull up a stool to see Richard and his brigade in action.
For those looking for a traditional pub environment, head to the bar with its display of exclusively sourced antique British taxidermy, traditional anaglypta wallpaper ceiling and original oak whisky barrel high tables and chairs.

If there was any small criticism it would be that the price points seem a little high, but once you have eaten you realise that you are paying for the quality produce, and the skilled chefs preparing the meals.   • "Great restaurant and ambiance. Staff were very attentive - knowledgeable about the menu and pleasant. Food menu broad and interesting - very meaty (but that didn't put me off as a pescetarian!) I ate kiln smoked salmon - very tasty and served with an imaginative salad. My friend had a baby chicken with a lovely salad. The other diner, a teenager, had a huge pie which was very generously filled with tender meat. There were a couple of vegetarian options (although the over all restaurant may not appeal to all vegetarians). A good wine selection also. Would definitely go again."

Although the waiting staff were generally very good , they didn't ask if the food was ok after we received it which I think is usually done. Only asked when they came to clear the plates"

  • "We booked this for a special occasion and the pub itself is very lovely and the food was also good. I wouldn't say any of our meals were outstanding or as good as I expected but they were nice. Unfortunately the staff were not so nice, one lady in particular who was our waitress. She was quite rude and other staff members were seen to be pulling faces and whispering about other customers whenever they went into the kitchen. It wasn't a pleasant atmosphere."

Overall a very nice experience and would go back."

  • "Booked for an after theatre meal being so close to the Barbican. Staff were very obliging in changing our booking at last minute and were attentive and good humoured throughout the meal. Starters were delicious, main course even more so (we had the market fish option) but the desserts were to die for. As always, you look at what other diners have and we thought we must try the Sunday roast next time as that looked extremely tempting. Despite the widely publicised restriction on time, we were not hurried or told that we could only have the table for two hours. The bar also serves a good selection of beers and is well worth trying before the meal."

We were not told that they had any specials and only saw them on the board after we had ordered. And I waited for ages for a waiter to come to our table so I could get some water. They could have been attentive. My fish dish was heavenly and I wouldn't hesitate to go back and order it again. Bustling place but not too noisy. I would recommend it but they need to improve on the service."

Signalled a waiter can we order some drinks? not from me but will speak to your waiter, returned to front of restaurant where at least 4 staff talking, after a conference to decide someone is assigned and are you ready to order? We wanted some drinks first. Only after requests were a wine list provided and specials described. Food was so so"

  • "Reading the menu you would be forgiven for keen anticipation, but it's just skin deep. Small portions, unremarkable food given the enthusiastic descriptions, lethargic service (lunch). The wine list is rather good though, if pricey. Overall designed not for the satisfaction of the client but the profit margin of the owner. At this prime location most probably won't care. However this is basically a pub with a small restaurant. I would stick to the pub"

In the pub area at the front of the restaurant we had been worried about the accoustics, as plain walls and wooden floors had meant we strained to hear each other. Luckily, the dininig area's accoustics are softened, meaning we didn't have to shout acorss the table. Service was friendly and prompt without being overbearing. My other half approved of his steak, saying it was better than one he had had in Hawksmoor. My fishcake was good too, the buttered greens that came with it being a stand out for me. I was slightly disappointed by my popcorn icecream - perhaps just a bad choice by me. Overall, a great meal close to the Barbican."

I ordered a 175 ml glass of Riesling with the start, it cost £9.80 and it was not very good and it had too much spritz. The 12.5% service charge is a cheeky habit for this and many places now in London."

However, over the years I am noticing a dumbing-down of the menu, with less of the interesting game dishes that I remember when it first opened. This is still an excellent post-theatre dining spot, but I would prefer to see it returning to a more challenging menu."
