A word from The Jugged Hare
Head chef, Stephen Englefield, takes charge of the open kitchen, adding an element of theatre to the dining room, which is complete with a state-of-the-art eight-spit rotisserie and charcoal grill, expect to seasonal game such as haunch of venison, mallard and wild boar. Hearty feast menus, available for parties and families, and a selection of traditional Sunday roasts, from whole roasted suckling pig to leg of spring lamb, will make The Jugged Hare an ideal weekend destination too. Wild fish and shellfish handpicked at Billingsgate will also feature strongly on the menu. The hottest seats are located at the pass - pull up a stool to see Stephen and his brigade in action.
For those looking for a traditional pub environment, head to the bar with its display of exclusively sourced antique British taxidermy, traditional anaglypta wallpaper ceiling and original oak whisky barrel high tables and chairs.

Booked a table for 5.30 for a friend and me but this wasn't ready because of the afternoon diners. They close this part for 1/2 hour to clear/reset tables for the evening diners. I was told over the phone to vacate the table at 7pm but as we were a little late sitting the lovely waitress was very accommodating and we actually left around 8. Service, food, ambience was fab. Would return there in a heartbeat.

The restaurant was a real let down, the waitress didn't know what a widgeon was on the menu, the service was awful, we had to ask twice for water and it was not topped up at all, the food was very average, the carrots, cauliflower and cabbage were raw and inedible, it was very expensive for the quality of food received.

After reading reviews and looking at the website, this looked like the perfect place for a special Sunday lunch for my elderly mother's birthday. Our welcome was very warm, the restaurant looks fantastic and the menu promised much. Our waitress was superb and we really enjoyed our time there. The big problem was the food. The beef and mutton were so fatty and sinewy that we couldn't cut it, let alone chew it and the chicken was dry. The potatoes and vegetables were fine and the presentation lovely, but for £18.50, we expected more. We would have had better quality at a Toby Inn. The staff did their best to make amends by replacing one of the dishes and giving a free dessert, but the damage was done. I suspect their speciality is all the game that was on the menu, maybe one day we'll give that a try. Desserts were lovely and for anyone who likes ale, the Jugged Hare's own pale ale is delicious. Give the restaurant a go, but just steer clear of the roasts.

Menu looks great but disappoints in delivery. Lots of game choices but all served in exactly the same way. Trades more on the novelty of broad game menu than anything else. Service was very very poor and for the prices charged we were very disappointed. Wine flights were tiny and a let down. Wouldn't wat there again. Much better food and service in Cote Brasserie across the road.

The Jugged Hare is fantastic for Game, the range is outstanding and really well cooked. Grouse was lovely very gamey as end if season. Wife had chicken from Rotisserie which was generous, well cooked and presented and finally the chips are to die for!

Me and my wife have now had two first class meals at this restaurant/gastropub which specialises in game. The ambiance is lively -- the restaurant is used by energetic city folk and we had beer in the typical London pub bar before lunch. The draught beer is well kept here. There is a choice of draught beer or botttled wine with the meal. There is a good variety of game, I had teal crown and tit-bits to start with followed by a widgeon and my wife had goats cheese salad followed by venison. Good heavy dessert of sticky toffee pudding with chestnuts and a glass of sweet Rivesaltes to ease it down was enjoyed too. The game was perfectly cooked. There is no inhibition in this restaurant preventing one picking up the remains of the duck in one's fingers after carving and doing justice to the succulent meat - there are good facilities for hand washing afterwards including individual towels provided. The waiters were attentive and friendly and there was good conversations about wine and eating in France, Italy and England. The restaurant is open late into the afternoon (we started eating at 14:00 hours) so allowing for a relaxed late lunch in the English style. We very much recommend this restaurant to our fellow carnivores.

Maybe I'd built my hopes too high - the menu reads wonderfully. The reality though was just a bit ordinary, though the dining area is good unless you can't abide braying city types and the staff were friendly if not especially efficient. The starters were poor - one which should have been hot was cool, one was undercooked and had to go back, one (a terrine which sounded wonderful) was flavourless. The main courses were good, though my fennel, nestled under a lovely piece of sea bass, was barely cooked. The puddings were nice. Thankfully the bill wasn't too high considering we drank three bottles of good wine, but afterwards it seemed like we'd just spent a lot of money and not had much in return.

Fabulous game restaurant. Large dining space with a view of the kitchen and wine. The menu is extremely varied and makes you want to come back for more, to mark your way through all of the different options. Good to be able to find somewhere that does a good steak - not cheap but good value as the food is excellent. This is a cut above a typical gastropub. We were there on a Thursday night and both the pub and restaurant were full, including the downstairs, which appeared to be hosting a private work party. Smart toilets! So, the whole experience felt fun and on the classier side of gastropub dining. It was noisy but for us that added to the lively ambience.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will certainly be returning. So much on the menu to try. If you like Game food then you are in for a treat. Deserts are to die for too. We arrived at 6pm for the start of their evening and it soon became very busy. Plenty of people arriving for pre theatre dinners. Barbican is across the road from the Restuarant. The bar is small and gets packed very quickly but also empties just as quick.

The food at the Jugged Hare is great. Gastropub without being pretentious and we've had many good experiences here. Unfortunately on this occasion our service was atrocious, inattentive inefficient and almost borderline rude. Maybe because we were a table of North Americans? Really a shame as I myself work for a very reputable establishment in the city and frankly poor service cannot be excused.

Great menu and wine selection although our bottle of red wine was too cold which affected the taste of the wine. Service a little slow and I also didn't like the fact there wasn't much gravey on my food and when asked for a little extra more gravey I was charged £1.50 also there is a hidden £1 charge for one of their charities they support on your bill which they do not tell you about for these two reason and the above I would not go back or recommend to anyone.

I have been to the JH twice now. Both times I have been incredibly impressed with the service, the choices on the menu and the wine. I love the lay-out of the restaurant and the food is excellent. My little red legged partridge was slightly tough but I put that down to the fact it is a very small bird and I miagine is difficult to cook perfectly. The garnish of homemade goosefat crisps, cabbage and homemade breadsauce were scrummy. My friend had seabass with risotto and it was really excellent.

I dined at the Jugged Hare with my wife, daughter and her boyfriend on a Friday evening. The bar and restaurant were both busy and buzzed with conversation, creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The place was decorated with taxidermy which added to the ambience of this venue which specialises in game. Our food was tasty; I had the best burger I have ever eaten and the chips were sublime! The portion sizes were just right as the food is rather rich so by the time our desserts arrived we need to be rolled out of the restaurant. Our lovely Irish waitrose was attentive and friendly. We couldn't have asked for more and we will definitely return to this fabulous place.

Two of us had grouse and two had jugged hare, both excellent . starters were all good too. The service was friendly but a bit haphazard , I think the waiter was new. Pity about the noise levels though, it took the edge of the evening and turned what could have been an excellent evening into just a good one.

The waiter spoilt our meal with his snotty attitude, rolling his eyes and walking off when we spent too long over the wine menu and being generally disdainful. He couldn't be bothered to explain why the burger only came medium to well done. The fennel and watercress soup had no flavour at all, it just tasted of cream and water. The main courses were good, but I suspect a lot of salt was used as we were both incredibly thirsty afterwards. I have eaten at the Jugged Hair before, a few years ago, when the atmosphere and food were a lot better.

Stumbled upon this when searching for a meat oriented business lunch. Loved the decor - not so much the animal heads, but the rest of it made it look pristine and different to other places. Didn't feel stuffy at all which some meat places can. Service really good. 2 things weren't available but we were told at the beginning - plenty to choose from so not an issue. I asked for assistance on white wine and was given 2 small glasses of different ones to taste. After choosing 1, I was then brought another 2 different ones to try, just to be sure! Food was excellent - the carnivore I took praised it heartily, so that's good enough for me. Buzzing bar that we had drinks in afterwards and good service from the bar staff too.

Any criticism would be minor, good communication and reassurance about the booking, and on arrival they where relaxed about our table time which was appreciated as it gave us time to meet up and chat in the bar for a while longer. Nice meet & greet, very efficient lady restaurant manager on our day, our waitress was very pleasant and attentive, though there was an older guy when it came to bringing plates to our table who's manner was just the wrong side of 'offish' which was a slight pity! He needs to leave his attitude at the door on the way into work in a service industry. Would recommend with reservations.

Very lively, or some will say noisy. The food is generally sophisticated, apart from puddings. Somewhat 80% of menu are game. So if you don't like game, don't bother. If you like it, it will be worth going. Two puddings we ordered were too sweet and couldn't finish. The starter s and mains were tasty. Portion will vary, so you'd better ask. Service also varied, some very good, others rather rude. Exhibitions in the stairs to washroom are too gross for me... The mains are quite pricy, too. It is an extremely popular restaurant, so Inguess there are other charms I didn't notice.
