A word from The Jugged Hare
Head chef, Richard O’Connell, takes charge of the open kitchen, adding an element of theatre to the dining room, which is complete with a state-of-the-art eight-spit rotisserie and charcoal grill, expect to seasonal game such as haunch of venison, mallard and wild boar. Hearty feast menus, available for parties and families, and a selection of traditional Sunday roasts, from whole roasted suckling pig to leg of spring lamb, will make The Jugged Hare an ideal weekend destination too. Wild fish and shellfish handpicked at Billingsgate will also feature strongly on the menu. The hottest seats are located at the pass - pull up a stool to see Richard and his brigade in action.
For those looking for a traditional pub environment, head to the bar with its display of exclusively sourced antique British taxidermy, traditional anaglypta wallpaper ceiling and original oak whisky barrel high tables and chairs.

Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed an early supper before going onto a concert, the food was delicious the staff were excellent and it was most enjoyable."
    dined on 19/04/2014
  • "We had a great time at the restaurant. Food was very very good, ambience and service were great as well. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant "
    dined on 16/04/2014
  • "The food was good using quality ingredients but the spicy duck livers were not that spicy and the lamb pot roast lacked depth of flavour. but a good venue with a fine sel0ection of beers and good service. "
    dined on 14/04/2014
  • "Great central location, good menu, lovely wine, bit noisy however worked well for my purposes. Highly recommended for business lunch."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "Without many decent options available for Saturday lunch in the Barbican area, this is a very good option. It can get a bit noisy and corporate, but the food and the service are excellent"
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "The service was efficient and extremely good and the staff extremely helpful. The Menu is excellent and food was as good, if not even better than as it appears on their menu and website! Every dish served was a heaven of taste!"
    dined on 10/04/2014
  • "My boss took a client to The Jugged Hare and was very impressed with the food and the ambience in the restaurant."
    dined on 08/04/2014
  • "Great selection of different meats and menu choices although the night we went they had run out of a couple of them. Tables are quite close together and small so try and get a booth if you can."
    dined on 01/10/2013
  • "I really loved the bar and restaurant. The decor is excellent and it's got a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately for us, whilst the menu had a good selection, the chef over seasoned every one of our dishes, and my rib eye steak was not cooked through. I had asked for rare but it was beyond rare in places and I had to leave it."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "The food was good, in that fashionably basic kind of way. Good ingredients, simply cooked and all that. A very appetising menu. Classic, meaty British stuff. Some nice seafood too. The evening was a little spoiled by below par service. The waitress was grumpy and barely comprehensible. We waited an inordinate amount of time between courses. The restaurant's love in with that other fashion - of putting every component of a dish onto its own plate/random bit of wood or into its own pot - meant that we ate surrounded by towers of teetering pots, pans and crockery. Don't let that put you off, though. It's a good place. And it was Saturday night. And, in uncharacteristic defiance of another current trend, you can reserve a table!"
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Nice location, great food, nice wine and service. Liked the interior and the way the table was set. Will have dinner there again."
    dined on 04/04/2014
  • "Second time at this restaurant and the way the service is structured you never feel like anyone is serving you specifically, hence items requested are forgotten, different explanations from separate staff and the staff come across as rather snooty (strangely not the management staff) so maybe it is the nationality and English interpretation but I never leave feeling positive. Although the half chicken was great as was my friends' steaks."
    dined on 04/04/2014
  • "A lovely meal, busy, buzzy atmosphere and Mothers Day chocolates gift a great touch! Will be back!"
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "Went here for dinner looking for a British meal in the City. The food options are good and the service was polite and friendly. But the evening was overshadowed by how noisy the place was - we could barely hear each other and so it was not easy to hold a conversation. It was a Wednesday evening so I had expected it to be less boisterous."
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "Felt rushed with only 5 mins between courses and when for 2 with 1 bottle of wine the bill was £147 I think its over priced for a gastro pub. That said downstairs private dining looked great and exclusive Might go again but not in a rush"
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "A little gem nestled by the Barbican. Seafood specialties and grilled dishes are outstanding, but the prices reflect the quality. A very business oriented clientele, and feels very pre-big bang with pinstripes and boozy lunches mid week. Try the Sunday lunch for good value before heading to the Barbican."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Nice pub with great decor, it does feel like an old English pub. Probably not the best place to go if you're a vegetarian or love fluffy bunnies as they serve a lot of game and have them hanging off the walls. Nice pub, good food and service. I would recommend if you're in the area."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "A 6.30pm booking for two. On arrival we were reminded that the table would be available to us for two hours, which would have been fine. Our starters and main courses were excellent, as was the service to that point. We were given dessert menus and were then totally abandoned! After 45 mins we gave up. We had to go to the till station to pay. The fact that a 12.5% service charge was included (but which we declined to pay) beggared belief. We won't be returning to The Jugged Hare!"
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "The service was very slow and at times I felt that we were forgotten about. We waited for quite some time before the waiter took our order and that is only because the maitre d overheard me complain to my partner of the length of time we had been waiting for and so she came over to to assure us that a waiter would be on their way to take our order. I also waited so long for my drink inbetween my starter and main course that I went to the bar myself, the table next to us were having their wine poured for them every time their glasses were half empty and I was having to get my own drink from the bar. Also the puddings I thought were overpriced for what they were, popcorn ice is just vanilla ice cream with a few bits of popcorn on the top."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Excellent food in the dining room and you can enjoy a drink in the buzzy bar area beforehand."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "We had a nice dinner Sunday evening with some co-workers visiting from out of town. Everything very top notch minus one aspect. There was only ONE vegetarian choice on the menu. Now clearly this is a game & meat eaters paradise, but given the large brasserie in the back it seems there should be a way to include more than 1 veggie item. Will definitely go back again :)"
    dined on 16/03/2014
  • "No doubt about it - the food and service are amazing - especially the cred salmon (drool). Will go back there quite happily!"
    dined on 07/03/2014
  • "Jugged Hare, hearty mostly meaty menu, generally good quality and reliable service"
    dined on 02/03/2014
  • "Great meal, great service. Meat heavy menu means it's probably not the best option for veggies. The cinnamon donut holes were a particular highlight!"
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Burger was overcooked, lamb neck was good but very short in meat... we had dinner there before and liked the place but this was very disappointing"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "This is a great option for before or after the theatre at the Barbican. A pre and post theatre menu is available. It's a very busy pub scene with attached gastro pub. I thought the food was just average. The waiters and waitresses were lovely and trying to be helpful, but the place was overly busy, and it was difficult for them to give great service on a busy Saturday evening. Lots of wine choices."
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "The setting and ambience was perfect for chatting over a relaxed lunch. The waiting staff were helpful and friendly and the food was delicious."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "A lunchtime catch-up with an old friend requires the ability to converse. Unfortunately the tightly squeezed together tables down the window side of the restaurant to maximise dining capacity made this very difficult. We constantly had to repeat ourselves and lean over the dining table to make each other heard above the noise of conversations from the diners either side of us. The staff were attentive but a little too pushy in directing us towards certain menu choices. When we opted for Cheeseburgers the response was palpable disappointment which I find very off-putting. The jugged Hare tries a little too hard and is yet to find the balance of quiet efficiency and courtesy."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "Great lovation for dining before or after any Barbican event"
    dined on 11/03/2013
  • "Great Brit-style food once again. Read no more, just go and eat here."
    dined on 26/02/2014
  • "Next to Barbican Centre, is this updated but still charming pub. Love the open kitchen and the waitstaff were all very friendly and courteous. They even have a lovely Jugged Hare beer! The dining room is nice and open, too."
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "Chosen for its convenience as a pre-Barbican concert eatery, The Jugged Hare did not disappoint on any count. Interesting starters of Sizzling Crab Claws (outstanding) and Blood Sausage (rich and spicy) were complemented by excellent smoked salmon. A variety of mains including the eponymous jugged hare, wild boar, and two delicate fish dishes were shared around the table to mutual satisfaction. We thought the egg custard dessert was closer to creme brûlée, but it was delicious just the same. There's a varied wine list (though I couldn't find any Malbec to go with my boar) and the service was prompt, efficient and knowledgable."
    dined on 23/02/2014
  • "I'm a real carnivore but it was actually the vegetables which were a real highlight- perfect crisp goose fat roast potatoes, wonderful fresh out of the oven cauliflower cheese & just the right side of crunchy carrots. Expensive prices but quality food. Lovely fresh warm bread provided too. Friendly staff & great service. Great menu, want to go back to try more. Would highly recommend"
    dined on 23/02/2014
  • "The lunch shift at this local gastro pub is full of City people having client lunches. The level of noise in the restaurant is unbelievable. I found myself having to almost scream to be heard, so not great for a client lunch but more suited for a place to go with colleagues on a Friday to vent out. The food is outstanding but on the expensive side. We had two starters and two mains and sparkling water and I paid £75 which for the times we are living and a lunch seems overpriced for a pub, on tables without tablecloth, an a super casual environment."
    dined on 20/02/2014
  • "Very nice, a treat for my usual budget with a chance to try something different. I had blood sausage, venison and a chocolate tart - all very good. The blood sausage was similar to one I tried in Portugal, there it was served with an apple sauce, here it was with a small sweet salad. Venison was lovely, I want to say melt in the mouth, but would like steer clear of cliché. Pudding was also delicious, very rich with a little clotted cream. The people I ate with also seemed to enjoy, and one of us, can't remember who, picked out a really nice red wine, French is all I can remember. Service was excellent, I sensed they new I was out of my depth (I was) they were helpful , guided me through the menu without belittling me, always a plus."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "Great lunch on Saturday, heaps of choice - almost too much! Food v rich but delicious."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "As the name implies, the Jugged Hare is strong on game and meat generally. Pre-concert we went for the burgers which, while expensive for burgers were at the bottom end of the fully priced mains menu. The burgers themselves were really excellent: tender, tasty, cooked on the rare side of medium and accompanied by good trimmings and nice chips. We'll go back to explore more of the menu. A glass of prosecco was good and well priced. It's quite noisy due to hard surfaces, the open kitchen and quite low ceilings but quite vibrant and buzzy. Good attentive service."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I stayed at the Montcalm brewery on Wednesday and had the most amazing stay. were recommended to try the Jugged Hare. we were taken to a cramped table of 2. my boyfriend had a hair in his starter, we received cold chips, the table opposite us were drunk and tried to pour themselves a glass of our fizz from the bucket.there was no engaging from the managers or waiter. I asked for the service to be removed and the waiter was so oblivious to how awful his service had been, he then asked what was wrong!!! TERRIBLE end to a lovely time with my partner. I work in the trade and run a restaurant myself, I know the importance of customer focus. the food was washed out due to this and I don't think that's fair on a kitchen that created good food."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I went here with my wife on valentine's day for lunch. The food was very good although the menu was not as extensive as on the website. A good selection of wines at varied prices, although mainly expensive, and enjoyed our Cours La Reine 2012. The restaurant was at the time full and very noisy and echoey with chatter. The Tables for 2 were set very close together so we could overhear the conversations of others. The setting and decor was very pleasant with a nice bar area, although quite small. If I return I would perhaps use the bar area and choose from the bar menu. We have been to other restaurants in this group and prefer The Gun at Coldharbour."

  • "Who says British food can't compare with French etc..., well the Jugged Hare shows that British food is the best. After rave reviews from some friends we booked the restaurant for a 50th Birthday lunch, and are so glad we did! Fantastic ingredients, wonderfully cooked, very generous portions, and wonderful service. WOW! You must try the suckling pig, or of course the Jugged Hare!"
