A word from The Leather Exchange & The Leather Uppers
Our charming and intimate dining room The Leather Uppers, was born in response to an ever-increasing demand by local business and residents for a dining room worthy of the building's location and character. Currently open Monday to Friday evenings and seating around 35 people at any one time, the room is unique, stylish and welcoming. With its open fireplace and views of the city, it is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy all the culinary delights created by our chefs on a daily basis. The 'Uppers' menu has a great influence on our more casual lunch and Exchange Bar menus.

Bermondsey Street prices and poor quality food. Shabby all round. A very nice waiter, who seemed embarrassed by the quality of the food.

We returned to the Leather Exchange about a year after an indifferent experience. We dined early(18:45) and were the only diners among many drinkers (it was Friday) but gradually the tables around us filled. Excellent service. Food very good. My rib-eye steak was melt-in-the-mouth.

This pub is a fantastic hidden gem in the heart of London, great food, drink and atmosphere and well worth a walk down the road less travelled to find something truly lovely. It's a great place for all ages and not to be missed.

  • Returning Back for Sunday Lunch

We sat upstairs for Sun lunch. Altho the room was quite cold, ambience was good. Service was good too altho we felt the nice waitress was overstretched-a guy also serving altho he was mainly downstairs. We had to remind our waitress twice about extra gravy request which never appeared & also our mint sauce which we got 1/2 way through the meal. Service bet courses was slow esp noted as cold room. Starters of Cauliflower soup was magnificent but such large & delicious portions, bread & terrific indian flavoured veg tempura meant that perhaps we should've bypassed the mediocre & strange cut of lamb straight to a dessert. Would go back altho we've been in this situation before with similar outcome when they did Sunday lunch a few yrs' ago.

Good food, restaurant quality in a great pub atmosphere. The service was attentive without being too fussy which made for a lovely evening. The only problem was the price. I realise that high quality UK ingredients aren't cheap to source but £6 for a slither of treacle tart is crazy. If the prices were reduced by 30-40% then this would be a gem of a gastro pub however at current prices it is competing with some far better restaurants. I'd definitely try it, but maybe for lunch...

Booked for dinner but were very disappointed we were in the main bar not the upstairs restaurant - should have been told they had a big party at the time of booking I think. However, despite previous reviews, the service was great - really looked after well and although a really noise bunch of women were opening their Secret Santa, it was not the pubs fault. will go back when next in area to get second opinion.

On it's rating in Top table, I had arranged to meet a customer for dinner here. Unfortunately the service, ambience and food all fell well short of my expectations, My T-bone steak had no T-Bone and was over-done and thin and tiny. The customer's fish too was a small portion. The waiter did not know about the source of the fish. Overall, a poor meal.

We were somewhat disappointed with our Friday lunch at Leather Exchange. The messy pork bbq sandwich had a good filling but it was served on a stale preserved 70s fast-food type bun. The portion of fish and chips was small with the fish being about the size of a deck of cards. The customers at the table next to us complained about it and the manager basically just said that this is the normal size.

Once we'd picked our way through the very crowded pub and up an unattractive back stairway, we found a very elegant and attractive period dining room - though it was rather chilly at first, and not quite the cosy hideaway we were hoping for on a very cold night. Drinks were slow to arrive, and several dishes on the menu were unavailable. But dishes from the (modern-British, hearty) menu were attractively presented. The wine list was short but thoughtfully chosen. Prices seemed reasonable for the area. At present, this seems like a reasonable neighbourhood dining option - but maybe only if you fail to get a table at one of the buzzier places nearby.

This is a lovely local pub that should do better. It is slightly off the beaten track (the track being Bermondsey Street) so can be overlooked and it shouldn't be. Staff especially were lovely.

A very cosy little pub with some great ales. Food was pretty good (particularly the messy pork burger) though some portions (the fish dishes) were a little on the small side and coulsd do with some sides. Service could have a little more responsive too, but overall giid friendly atmosphere and good value

Had evening meal in the Leather Exchange & the Leather uppers In London. Food was great, service was average - they had a lot of christmas bookings in. There were 2 of us sat at a table which was randomly jammed in a corner facing the wall inbetween the 2 parties. They should have said they were full and not let us book. O well, would go again as food really was great but not in peak season.

We headed to The Leather Uppers for an early dinner. The restaurant was empty on arrival, but started to fill as we ate. Whilst under-impressed with the building (from the reviews & write up I expected it to be grander) the food and service was fabulous. Patrick our NZ waiter was knowledgable & always on hand. The bread & oil to start was delicious, followed by soup and amazing pork medallions. Dessert was scrumptious in portions that satiated but didn't leave me feeling guilty. Good coffee too!

We may have been at the restaurant on a bad evening. They were moving to their Christmas menu the next day, so therefore they were out of many things on their menu. The server was confused about what they had or did not have. I was entertaining customers that evening and was a bit embarrassed about the service. It would have been good to know in advance that they were changing their menu.

Two of us ate at The Leather Uppers in London SE1 on the evening of 26 October. Downstairs, The Leather Exchange was heaving with people, a complete contrast to the upstairs restaurant, which was almost empty. Limited but interesting and reasonably priced menu. We had the roast pork loin Special and the transtional fish and chips. Good portions, well presented. Minor complaint - no veg included with the Special. Chosen wine NZ Sauvingnon out of stock Cost £50 for two; go in a group

The Leather Exchange is a fantastic pub. Excellent beer, wonderful staff, fantastic food, cool atmosphere, beautifully set and tastefully decorated. Having booked a table for 10 people, staff were wonderfully accommodating after 4 extras arrived! Really excellent food; traditional pub food (fish & chips, pie etc) is extremely well done, whilst the more modern options (fresh tuna, rib eye steak, aubergine croquette) are superb. Excellent pub and will definitely return. Many times...

Terrific lively bar. Dining room was cavernous and nearly empty (it was earlyish evening though) and not particularly atmospheric; chilly too. Food was fine, though perhaps nothing more than to be expected. The staff were utterly charming however, and both the bar and Uppers deserve to succeed. I'm sure they will.
