The restaurant closed a while back but top table didn't tell me anything about it. Luckily I checked the restaurants website for an address to help me find it and it said on that that it had been closed, else i would have had a wasted journey from Derby to Leeds.

My review is based on previous visits as the restaurant unfortunately had to close due to the Alea Casino, in which it was located, closed down 2 weeks before we were due to dine there. This was a great shame because the restaurant was fabulous. The food and service were outstanding. I was, however, disappointed that Top Table not only failed to notify me that it was closed, but actually sent me a reminder e-mail the day before. It's lucky that we happened to see it on the local news, or we would have had a wasted journey and huge disappointment.

I had been very much looking forward to this booking but as the restaurant had closed down 2 weeks previously I am unable to comment on it. I will comment on the fact that this website seems oblivious to the fact and reminded me of my booking and have asked me to comment my meal that I have not had. Very poor show indeed!!!!

  • Leeds Kitchen - Shut down
    Janet
    Dined on 14/3/2013
Hi, we had booked a table for the 14th of March - but then were really disappointed when the Leeds Kitchen by James Martin shut down on the 4th March, I did try to contact the restaurant just in case they were still operational, but could not get a reply, so obviously we had to book elsewhere. I cannot express enough how thoroughly upset and disappointed we were, as this was our wedding anniversary and also my birthday. That is all the feedback I can give you. I did try to send this without putting anything in the boxes above - but it would not send without something in there, so obviously I just ticked "poor" although as we were not able to try the food we cannot really comment. We had booked a meal for mid March but unfortunately the restaurant had to close unexpectedly in early March due to the casino suspending trading, however no-one contacted us to inform us of this so we still turned up for our booking. I realise that the closing was unexpected, however I felt that it was poor customer service to not inform us that the booking could no longer go ahead. To add to the frustration, I received a reminder of the booking from TopTable the day beforehand and have now just received a feedback form. Some joined up communication between the restaurant and the online booking service may be helpful! This does not reflect well on either the restaurant or TopTable.

Having held a reservation for about 4 months prior to the restaurant closing down along with the casino that houses it, I then got an email on the day before our booking reminding me of our booking followed a week later by your email asking me to rate my experience. Well let me tell you it has been digusting and to make matters worse the Alea casinos still trade in at least 4 more establishments. They have my phone number and email and niether them or anyone from the James Martin Leeds Kitchen have seen fit to inform me or apologise.

Took my husband there as a treat for his birthday and it was excellent. Both the food and the service was excellent. Good ambience too as there was a jazz duo playing who were very good. The only downside was the location of the restaurant, it would be better placed in the city centre.

An extremely pleasant evening with excellent service and delicious food. Staff were attentive without being intrusive and knowledgeable about the menu. Service was timely with appropriate pauses between courses. The quality and presentation of the food were faultless and a wonderful treat for the taste buds.

Had a voucher from Travelzoo for here. Staff were very accommodating when booking (high demand as lots of Travelzoo vouchers were expiring) The restaurant itself wasn't what I was expecting. I'd expected a large dining room for such a large venue, but what you get is a fairly average sized restaurant with great atmosphere and even on quiet evenings it won't seem too empty. I suppose it means they can focus on quality food rather than quantity of customers. The night we were there nearly every table was in use yet we weren't left waiting or unattended. The food was excellent, selected my meal based on the waitresses who gave their recommendations. Cant thank her enough! Overall faultless. Have been back twice since, will go again.

Although the food was delicious the overall experience was spoiled by lack of attention by the staff, a very noisy atmosphere and our table, near the entrance was very chilly. We arrived early hoping for a cocktail before dinner but were left in an empty bar for 30 minutes with no drink in sight. If we had known we would have gone for a drink elsewhere before dinner and I would have kept my coat on. Staff were polite but not very attentive with no friendly banter or recommendations and I never did get my cocktail, although the wine was lovely.

Taking my wife to the leeds kitchen was for a special birthday. We are not from Leeds and it was really important to me that it was as good as I hoped. I (and the birthday girl !!!) were not disappointed. The atmosphere, the food, the wine choice, the way she was treated were everything and more I hoped for, we have been raving on about the restaurant ever since.

A week late for valentine's day, but no less enjoyable. We chose Venison, Ox Cheek, and Bread and Butter pudding for myself, and Crab Risotto, Brill, and Custard Cream for my wife. Overall most courses were excellent, however the 3 stand out dishes were the Risotto, Ox cheek, and Bread and Butter pudding, however all courses were very good. Evening was made even better as we popped upstairs afterwards, and in a short space of time won £100. Excellent evening

The service was not good. the table was not ready at the appointed time. We had to go up to the Casino for a drink while waiting for it as there was no bar in the restaurant. It took forever to get a drink because the barman couldn't find clean wine glasses all were soiled on the shelves. Sweets were brought for two and a lengthy wait for the second two. A latte was ordered but never arrived. The food was good. This webpage won't let me correct the spelling of my title.

The starter and main course were brilliant, the only thing that let the meal down was the desert (hot chocolate fondant) as this was cooked right through making it a sponge cake. This minor hiccup did not ruin our wedding anniversary as the food and service were good and we will visit the restaurant in the future.

I have been to the Leeds Kitchen on a few occasions now and each time it has exceeded expectations. Great choice of usual and unusual dishes - try the more unusual you will not be disappointed. The taste and presentation are excellent and good vaule for money especially the Taster menu and Sunday lunch menu at fixed prices. The only drawback to the restaurant is having to go through the casino and its general situation which is out of the way. Street parking is a problem but if you park in the multi-storey they will endorse your ticket so you do not have to pay. I love the food here it is the best in Leeds.

Booked for this particular Sunday because it was advertised as 'Jazz Sunday' but to be honest the live music was pretty poor. The food was amazing but service was very slow & there weren't that many in the restaurant, just not enough staff. Having said that the staff that did attend to us were really very pleasant & when they did manage to get to us couldn't do enough to make it a good experience. What really spoiled it though is that it was really cold in the restaurant. We did complain but was told nothing could be done about it,something about the draft from the door etc?By the end of the meal had to revert to wearing scarves to keep warm! I would recommend for the food only therefore.......very disappointed that the casino wasn't open

Booked the restaurant for my Mums 60th birthday as she a big James Martin fan. Menu online looked good but it didnt list anything for vegatarian or gluten free for 2 of our party. However, the staff were more than helpful when we sat down producing a vegatarian menu and informing us that all the dishes can be made Gluten Free. The dishes were not standard food...but the crab risotto for starters and phesant for main was fantastic. Highly recommend the place, the prices are very reasonable for the high class service. Looking forward to trying .it.for a sundaylunch.

Took my staff out for a late Xmas party. Maybe our expectation were too high. The main meals were excellent but the starter and dessert very average. The service was slow all night even though the restaurant was only half full. There seemed to be no one in charge out front. When informing the waiter we weren't happy with our dessert he did nothing about it. Overall all main course excellent, everything else very average.

I booked through top table for a Saturday evening well in advance and added a note that I was using a travelzoo voucher. I had not read the instructions that stated I could not use this on Saturday which was my fault, however had I been told within a few days this was not an option I would have re scheduled with much less hassle. I was moved to another suitable date and this was all done really efficiently. The service on the night was good but nothing special. The food was superb, amazing in fact. I loved everything I ordered. The wine was a good price and a good bottle too. The restaurant does feel a bit corporate and not very individual and it was noisy too but all in all I would go back again just to enjoy more of the food.

We visited the armouries and decided to give James Martin's restaurant a try for Sunday lunch. Melt-in-the-mouth beef, towering yorkshire puds and generous portions. Attentive and courteous service. Our group consisted of three generations and we all thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I booked on-line, the booking went fine, the table was nice, the restaurant decor and ambience were good. The staff were most helpful when helping my gluten-free diary free boyfriend choose his meal, offering to modify anything he wanted on the menu. My only disappointment was in the flavour, which I appreciate is very personal. My boyfriend and I both picked the same main, which may reflect only one main course that needs jazzing up a bit, but we both agreed it lacked a bit of ooomf! We spend most Saturday mornings only being able to appreciate the works of James Martin with our eyes, however we finished the main course feeling it was missing something. Good portion sizes, homemade chocolates with coffee were amazing. Overall, 6/10.
