A word from The Living Room - Newcastle
Situated on Grey Street in Newcastle, The Living Room is a contemporary piano bar and restaurant with a laid-back vibe that keeps the locals coming back for more. During the day, it's the ideal place to do business over lunch or refuel after a day of shopping. In the evening, the resident musicians bring the bar to life and the modern eatery fills up with a lively post-work crowd catching up over cocktails.
The fixed price menu is great value for money and there are plenty of classic European dishes on offer all made with top quality seasonal ingredients. We love the Beef and Old Speckled Hen Pie not to mention the popular Trio of Pork. Portions are hearty, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is always buzzing what's not to love?

Diner Reviews
  • "I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken when it came under the lettuce was a huge lump of fatty substance at first i had no idea what it was , when i called the manager across i realised it was uncooked bacon pieces. how a restaurant can serve uncooked food is beyond believe disgusting."

  • "The service was very good and the food was delicious. Will be returning."

  • "Not the usual Living Room. Very few customers but staff seemed too busy and didn't know what they were doing. Food was nice, however it took a long time for all 3 courses to arrive. We were still eating 2 hours after arriving. Staff got starter and main wrong. Seems like the living room is in trouble. Wont be back in a hurry"

  • "We visited as 2 couples for en evening meal during resturant week. For 3 courses for £15pp it was very good value. The food was lovely. The only reason I marked it down for service was because the staff seemed to be over stretched so it took awhile for drinks, order to be taken and bringing the bill. Overall a great evening!"

  • "Had a beautiful meal here, food was first class. Service was great as well and the place was lovely"

  • "We arrived at 8pm knowing we needed to be elsewhere at 10pm however due to the incredibly slow service and terrible food that was not possible. I ended up having to call the manager over as several of the main courses were inedible and others were cold. One member of the party ended up just having a bowl of chips. There are many other restaurants close by and I would recommend using them instead of the Living Room."

  • "Unfortunately all our drinks were spilt over one of the group. Awkwardly the first thing said wasn't sorry. But they made what seemed to be a special effort to make it nice for us after that. I think after the initial drop he was so nervous it actually caused him to do another few things wrong, but it didnt ruin the meal and we were happy. Food was fab, not massive portions but what you expect from a fancy restaurant. Lovely menu and place to sit. Great for graduation meals."

  • "Dined here on Saturday night and booked it as it was a special birthday. It was a little disappointing. To start with the waitress reeled off a list of things that weren't available on the menu. Not the greatest of starts. There was a long wait for the food to arrive, so long that we had to ask as one of my party was going to miss her train. When the food arrived it was nice but certainly not worth the wait. I ordered the steak sandwich, which was more like a burger. The presentation was poor, not even a side salad but it tasted nice. It was overpriced for what you got. It wasn't all bad, the desert was delicious, as were the cocktails and the waitress was very attentive"

  • "We have been going to this restaurant as a group of friends now for 3 years and have received tremendous service and great food. There has obviously been some changes and unfortunately we will not be going again. The service was appalling and the food mediocre. This is a real shame."

  • "Great service, food and good value. Thanks to Ellie for your help as well. Lovely girl."

  • "I booked the Living Room from a quick scan of high rated restaurants in Newcastle hoping for a decent no-hassle meal after our flight to Newcastle. It was all I hoped for and more! The barman was quick, attentive and chatty and the pre-dinner drinks were perfect. The meal itself was from the 'Supper Club' menu and was 3 courses for £15, superb value. You'd expect to get slightly smaller portions but not here. Perfectly size, amazing flavours and cooked to perfection. When ordering the wine, we were informed that the £10 bottle of house wine had run out as they'd changed the wine list. Slightly disappointing until the waitress offered us the bottle we then chose for the same price. Outstanding service. We will definitely come here again!"

  • "Having had an excellent midweek lunch here several times over the last few years, and I thought that this would be a nice change for fathers day. Very disappointed. Slow service, option for starters not available, very mediocre Sunday roast - food only just warm. Slow service. Wouldn't come back for Sunday lunch."

  • "food was excellent and served with a smile. love the mini burgers options, I had a pulled pork with spiced apple chutney as a side. They even have a section of the menu which is 500 calories or under. The grande dessert is fab for indecisives like me, where you can have a little bit of all the desserts and great for sharing!"

  • "This is easy for both of us to get to, located in the centre of town. Good choice of food which was well prepared. Attentive service, very reasonable price."

  • "I love taking friends to this restaurant; especially if they've never been before. It never fails to impress and the staff are very friendly and helpful. My last visit was with my family and my sister and brother-in-law from Australia were very impressed with the quality of the food. There were seven of us altogether and the service was excellent. I will be back soon."

  • "Always been a lovely place to go and dine, lighting low, the piano playing in the background. A real special experience. On this occasion we arrived and everything had changed it was like a weather spoons had taken over. The tables were not laid, the napkins were paper, full lights on, messy seating arrangement and the clientele also seemed like it had gone downwards with it. I haven't rated my food as we walked out, the atmosphere just was not worth it and the food prices are those of a more upmarket cuisine so wasn't willing to pay. The atmosphere is just as important as the food quality living room bosses!! Bring the piano back!"

  • "We visited The Living Room on a Saturday night. Our table was booked for 8.30pm and we were greeted and shown to our table. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the restaurant had a lovely setting. There were a variety of diners from couples to small hen parties. We ordered from a very appetising menu. There was a great deal of choice and options that suited my husband who has been known to be very fussy! The food arrived promptly and looked and tasted gorgeous. The food was so good that we managed to squeeze in 3 courses. We also ordered from a good wine list. The service was attentive without being pushy but they also allowed enough time for food to be eaten before plates were cleared and the next course arrived. Overall very impressed! "

  • "Booked the restaurant with friends for a trip down memory lane. We used to eat here regularly. Place was empty and food pretty average for the price. Needs to up its game if it is to compete with the many new restaurants on Grey Street"

  • "Shown to table, only 3 tables with diners sat at them at that time but still placed between two tables with food left all over them. Wrong wine brought, but replaced with no fuss. Main course arrived without wife's onion rings, could not wait any longer than the 5 we did so started without them. Clearly had been overlooked but although apology offered it may have been good customer relations to waive £4 off the bill. Food was as ever first class, wife's 'well done' fillet steak absolutely cooked to perfection...well done on that. Although there were a couple of hitches as ever the food made it well worth the visit."

  • "Restaurant was very quite for a thursday lunch time .despite this the service was poor ,very slow and sporadic."

  • "I went for a lunch date with 2 other girls. We were served immediately and our food came not long after. Very good value for money and the food is delicious. The girl who served us was super friendly and attended to our needs with ease. I would recommend The Living Room to friends and family and will probably return soon. Very pleased."

  • "enjoyed a 3 course meal of the supper menu for £14.95 and bottle of white wine for £10.00,food very well presented and very good service from start to finish"

  • "This was a repeat visit before we flew off on holiday so we were in relaxed mode. The best surprise was half price cocktails all night in the downstairs bar. The meal was all well cooked, the service prompt and the staff friendly. Well worth a visit."

  • "First experiance of eating here and would certainly be back. Booked on-line, really easy, meal before theatre. Wasn't rushed and service was very good and friendly!"
    dined on 17/04/2014
  • "We went to The Living Room for a pre-theatre dinner, as a result it was quiet which helped the waitress attend to all our needs without being intrusive. The 'specials' menu was varied and we all chose from this menu - two courses for £11. All the food was delicious and good value. My daughter chose from the children's menu and this was varied too and there was no problem with her mixing two of the 'mains' to make one that she really liked! Was concerned about the negative reviews that I read regarding speed of service but we were eating early in the evening and it was not busy. Would definitely go again - at that time (5.45!)"

  • "Had Sunday lunch at Living room Newcastle on Sunday 13th April, outstanding service, food and value, honestly couldn't fault a thing."

  • "Loved the stylish interior and the ambience created by the playing talents of Claypath - a versatile set on guitar and piano. Although there was a delay in our food arriving, the service was always attentive and friendly. I was unable to sample the Gressingham Duck as the last one had already been served prior to our ordering, so opted for the Beef & Ale pie which was good but not great. My wife went for the Lamb Skewer with Cous Cous, which was a little on the dry side. It was a nice introduction to dining out in Newcastle but I would suggest the owners upping the anti on the food to match the sophisticated surroundings and again top marks to the acoustic set from Claypath."

  • "We unfortunately chose to come here for a hen doo meal but as we r from Edinburgh didn't know the place. We were made to feel very unwanted from the beginning, the bouncers looked us up and down and said"hmmm this is a up market place!" and when we finally sat at our table the waiters couldn't wait to get rid of us either, we ate and drank and paid in about 40 mins!!"
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "The food was lovely and the service was good however we did wait a very long time before we even got our starters. It was great value for money and the interior was gorgeous. There was live music and I would definetly go again but maybe not on a Saturday night."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Food was good - four adults and two children's meals; good selection and good quality. Really let down by poor service, restaurant wasn't busy either. Really inattentive staff, courses took to long to arrive and had to ask to hurry them along - 2.5 hours for two courses......"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Lunch was pleasant without being spectacular. We could all find something on the lunch menu that suited us and the service was efficient and friendly. We will probably use the restaurant again"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Partners Birthday night out. Busy Saturday evening but service was spot on. Good menu to choose from and thoroughly enjoyed our choices. Shared the pork block for the mains and this was a good choice. We will be back."

  • "Booked for family birthday party of 9 inc 2 children. 8 of the 9 meals very lovely, one still frozen in the middle. Offered replacement which was declined so offered a drink which was accepted but still charged for! We spent almost £300 so would of been a nice gesture. kids well catered for although kids meal £8 for 3 courses where charged individually do paid almost double which we didn't notice till we got home. service super."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "We recently visited the Living Room to take advantage of the early evening set menu. It is quite good value, with two courses for approx. £12 and they have a bottle of wine on offer for £10 when ordering. The service is quite good; we were eating with our fussy child and the staff were happy to adjust the food to meet his bland taste requirements. The adult food isn't too bad; not exceptional but acceptable for the price and the portions are of a decent size. Additional booze is very pricey and can make a helluva difference to your final bill. Overall, not bad but nothing out of this world either."

  • "Went for my birthday night out and the food was lovely, really good service. My sister had a pasta dish and ate it all but said it wasn't anything special but I had belly of pork and it was fantastic."

  • "Visited on Friday evening. Good, wide choice of food and drink on the menu. The restaurant was much quieter than the adjacent pub despite the presence of a live piano/guitar duo. Service was good to and there was no rush for us to leave. Have visited other Living Rooms and never been disappointed. Happy to recommend this one in the centre of Newcastle."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Menu made interesting reading but food was dissapointing. One starter was exteemely poor and returned to the kitchen to be replaced. It returned looking totally different, far more edible but still dissapointing in flavour. Awaiting the main course my husband noticed his fork was dirty, we checked both and mine was too, food debris both between the tines and on the surface. These were changed by our server without question only to be replaced by another fork where food debris again could be scraped from between the tines. Chosen from the supper menu, and our main course was described as 500 calories or less, this appeared to be down to the extreemley small portion. 'Basil Grande' Eaton Mess turned out to be equally dissapointing!"

  • "I have eaten in the Living Room, Newcastle many times but this was the first time I had gone for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was quieter than usual but my 2 girlfriends and I didn't mind this as we were able to have a good old natter. The restaurant is very elegant but it still has a laid back vibe. Not at all formal and stuffy. The service was first class and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for."
