A word from The Living Room - Newcastle
Situated on Grey Street in Newcastle, The Living Room is a contemporary piano bar and restaurant with a laid-back vibe that keeps the locals coming back for more. During the day, it's the ideal place to do business over lunch or refuel after a day of shopping. In the evening, the resident musicians bring the bar to life and the modern eatery fills up with a lively post-work crowd catching up over cocktails.
The fixed price menu is great value for money and there are plenty of classic European dishes on offer all made with top quality seasonal ingredients. We love the Beef and Old Speckled Hen Pie not to mention the popular Trio of Pork. Portions are hearty, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is always buzzing what's not to love?

Diner Reviews
  • "First experiance of eating here and would certainly be back. Booked on-line, really easy, meal before theatre. Wasn't rushed and service was very good and friendly!"
    dined on 17/04/2014
  • "enjoyed a 3 course meal of the supper menu for £14.95 and bottle of white wine for £10.00,food very well presented and very good service from start to finish"
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "We went to The Living Room for a pre-theatre dinner, as a result it was quiet which helped the waitress attend to all our needs without being intrusive. The 'specials' menu was varied and we all chose from this menu - two courses for £11. All the food was delicious and good value. My daughter chose from the children's menu and this was varied too and there was no problem with her mixing two of the 'mains' to make one that she really liked! Was concerned about the negative reviews that I read regarding speed of service but we were eating early in the evening and it was not busy. Would definitely go again - at that time (5.45!)"

  • "Had Sunday lunch at Living room Newcastle on Sunday 13th April, outstanding service, food and value, honestly couldn't fault a thing."
    dined on 13/04/2014
  • "Loved the stylish interior and the ambience created by the playing talents of Claypath - a versatile set on guitar and piano. Although there was a delay in our food arriving, the service was always attentive and friendly. I was unable to sample the Gressingham Duck as the last one had already been served prior to our ordering, so opted for the Beef & Ale pie which was good but not great. My wife went for the Lamb Skewer with Cous Cous, which was a little on the dry side. It was a nice introduction to dining out in Newcastle but I would suggest the owners upping the anti on the food to match the sophisticated surroundings and again top marks to the acoustic set from Claypath."
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "The food was lovely and the service was good however we did wait a very long time before we even got our starters. It was great value for money and the interior was gorgeous. There was live music and I would definetly go again but maybe not on a Saturday night."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "We unfortunately chose to come here for a hen doo meal but as we r from Edinburgh didn't know the place. We were made to feel very unwanted from the beginning, the bouncers looked us up and down and said"hmmm this is a up market place!" and when we finally sat at our table the waiters couldn't wait to get rid of us either, we ate and drank and paid in about 40 mins!!"
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Food was good - four adults and two children's meals; good selection and good quality. Really let down by poor service, restaurant wasn't busy either. Really inattentive staff, courses took to long to arrive and had to ask to hurry them along - 2.5 hours for two courses......"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Lunch was pleasant without being spectacular. We could all find something on the lunch menu that suited us and the service was efficient and friendly. We will probably use the restaurant again"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Partners Birthday night out. Busy Saturday evening but service was spot on. Good menu to choose from and thoroughly enjoyed our choices. Shared the pork block for the mains and this was a good choice. We will be back."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Booked for family birthday party of 9 inc 2 children. 8 of the 9 meals very lovely, one still frozen in the middle. Offered replacement which was declined so offered a drink which was accepted but still charged for! We spent almost £300 so would of been a nice gesture. kids well catered for although kids meal £8 for 3 courses where charged individually do paid almost double which we didn't notice till we got home. service super."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Great food and service. Everyone was very pleased and all thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Then continued the party downstairs. Great night!"
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "We recently visited the Living Room to take advantage of the early evening set menu. It is quite good value, with two courses for approx. £12 and they have a bottle of wine on offer for £10 when ordering. The service is quite good; we were eating with our fussy child and the staff were happy to adjust the food to meet his bland taste requirements. The adult food isn't too bad; not exceptional but acceptable for the price and the portions are of a decent size. Additional booze is very pricey and can make a helluva difference to your final bill. Overall, not bad but nothing out of this world either."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "Went for my birthday night out and the food was lovely, really good service. My sister had a pasta dish and ate it all but said it wasn't anything special but I had belly of pork and it was fantastic."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Visited on Friday evening. Good, wide choice of food and drink on the menu. The restaurant was much quieter than the adjacent pub despite the presence of a live piano/guitar duo. Service was good to and there was no rush for us to leave. Have visited other Living Rooms and never been disappointed. Happy to recommend this one in the centre of Newcastle."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Menu made interesting reading but food was dissapointing. One starter was exteemely poor and returned to the kitchen to be replaced. It returned looking totally different, far more edible but still dissapointing in flavour. Awaiting the main course my husband noticed his fork was dirty, we checked both and mine was too, food debris both between the tines and on the surface. These were changed by our server without question only to be replaced by another fork where food debris again could be scraped from between the tines. Chosen from the supper menu, and our main course was described as 500 calories or less, this appeared to be down to the extreemley small portion. 'Basil Grande' Eaton Mess turned out to be equally dissapointing!"
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "- main meal arrived 2.5 hours after arriving - wrong orders and forgot one - no jugs for some water??? - cold bernaise sauce for steak - overcooked fish and chicken - bad wine - coffee fine, expresso's disgusting"
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "I have eaten in the Living Room, Newcastle many times but this was the first time I had gone for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was quieter than usual but my 2 girlfriends and I didn't mind this as we were able to have a good old natter. The restaurant is very elegant but it still has a laid back vibe. Not at all formal and stuffy. The service was first class and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Booked for 6 people a couple of weeks before going, table was ready when we arrived, very attentive service, were a few things not available from the menu which was a little disappointing but food we did have was excellent. Only bad point was the lager it was as flat as a pancake and even when it was replaced was no better."
    dined on 07/03/2014
  • "An excellent meal for four celebrating a 70th Birthday.Food was excellent and the service very good. This was a Sunday evening and the Restaurant Dining Room was far from busy.Any lack of ambience was overcome by our seating in a an intimate side "booth" .A very good experience."
    dined on 02/03/2014
  • "We had a really good night and restaurant very comfortable. Food ok but expected a bit better for price. Seafood linguine should have been called mussel linguine as not much else. Lamb skewers with cous cous quite bland. Cocktails very good but very pricey or perhaps that just because we don t get out much these days! Sea bass and vegetarian sausage dish were enjoyed."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Choice of food on Supper Club Menu excellent - one of our group stated the TLR Burger was the best he had ever eaten quality and portion 10/10; Gressingham Chicken succulent and tasty. All meals served hot and well presented. Sticky Toffee Pudding was to die for. Everyone of our party of 9 enjoyed their meals and would definitely return. The venue had been recommended by one of the group for a colleagues Retirement Dinner and was modern, clean, central, easy to find."
    dined on 25/02/2014
  • "Good meal in a light and airy atmosphere. Ideal for an early evening get together. Quiet enough to be able to hold a conversation easily. Would go again."
    dined on 17/02/2014
  • "Excellent location for the Theater Royal. Went here before going to see a Matinee at the Theatre Royal (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) this Valentines Day 2014. Good menu choice, classics and some newer recipes to try (I love the American Sliders - small hamburgers)."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Found it poor. Was given a full menu but had to request The Sunday Lunch Menu. On delivery, was immediately informed that one of the mains[there were 5] was not available and in addition there was no stuffing available for 2 of the other mains i.e. Pork & Chicken. That left 2 options including The Vegetarian. Service was slow and food unappetising. I did not stay for a dessert."
    dined on 16/02/2014
  • "As quite a few items we're missing from the Valentines Menu, out waitress went above and beyond asking the chef to do a sharing board for I've and giving as a sharing desert each too, lovely food, best I've tasted in a while and we travel all over Europe and the States, would definitely recommend, didn't get out free chocolates though got booking by 4th Feb?!"
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "We visited TLR in Newcastle for dinner on Valentines Day. Having eaten at TLR Edinburgh on a number of occassions we've always been impressed with the quality of food and service so had certain expectations for TLR in Newcastle, which we're exceeded. The set menu had plenty of variety, excellent value for money and immaculately presented on the plate. The service received was perfect and at no point during the night did we have to fill our own wine glasses. All in all we had a perfect night and will return for a night out very soon."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I attended The Living Room with my girlfriend for Valentines day. At first sight, we were pleased with the aesthetics but however, staff occasionally broke traditional conventions of waitering, i.e discussing social events, rushing food in and out and not staying professional for the service they advertise online... However, they did comply in moving us to better seats and that was a plus. Unfortunately, we were asked for identification... We are both in our twenties and this was a little insulting and we felt undermined. The food was great, well presented and plenty of it but the music for the particular event was not well thought out but the value for money is not worth returning. A good one off but wouldn't return."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "My wife and I ate here on Saturday night. We both had Thai fish cakes for starters which were very tasty. I had fish and chips and my wife had the chicken. Both were very nice although portions were a bit small. We had a bottle of wine which was reasonably priced. Would eat here again. Service and ambience were both excellent."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "Romantic night for two - lovely atmosphere, loved the piano player, great service not too over the top like some restaurants and the food was excellent, medium steak just perfect!"
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "The food was lovely in general but don't think you're getting a special deal with the supper club menu as it only saved us 95p. Just order off the main menu, much more choice there. We went on a Tuesday night so it was pretty quiet, they seated everyone quite far from each other which was nice. Atmosphere and service was fine. We'll worth a try as food was good."
    dined on 04/02/2014
  • "The first time I went both food and service were very good. The second time was during restaurant week and the place was packed. A combination of customers and music meant the noise level was so loud I could barely hear what my friend was saying and we were sitting next to each other. I did not like the polenta goats cheese starter as I found it a little tasteless. The main course - monkfish, was very tasty but the portion too small for the price. The staff were friendly and accomodating. My chamomile tea ended up with a teabag in it (not just chamomile but ordinary tea bag also!) Although the evening was fine overall I had to move seats to avoid being blinded by an overhead spotlight on arrival and the level of noise was distracting."
    dined on 28/01/2014
  • "My mother and I dined here Thursday 30th January, it was busy because of the 50% and Restaurant Week. But we were taken straight to our table, drinks ordered and arrived promptly and and our waiter was helpful and friendly. We had mussels to start, which were gorgeous, but we did wait nearly half an hour for our main course, and my steak was just "warm" - really nice but could have been hotter :-( - overall great value, especially wiht the 50% off offer!!!"
    dined on 30/01/2014
  • "For the amount we paid £15 for 3 courses (£10 for 2) the quality and quantity of food was exceptional. Not a vast menu choice but a good selection"
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "2 Visit in 2 weeks and was disappointed on both occasions - Menu items not available, had to chase food on both occasions, found restaurant dirty. Used to be so much better and seems to have gone down hill. Food however = very nice."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "Went with a group of 6 for restaurant week, the food was very nice indeed. We had three courses and all were fantastic."
    dined on 29/01/2014
  • "We've visited the Living room on a number of occasions and never been disappointed. Possibly it was just because it was so quiet, but all our favourite dishes were off the service was extremely slow, we were the over 3 hours and not by choice. The chicken was tasteless and dry. We will give it one more try, but if it's happens again I 'm afraid we won't be back."
    dined on 26/01/2014
  • "Fantastic good , really good service ... Mu favourite restaurant"
    dined on 31/12/2013
  • "attended with family for wife's birthday. service was appalling but good food.there only appeared to 1 waiter for the restaurant."
