A word from The Mark Cross Inn
The Mark Cross Inn is a beautiful pub, a place to meet, eat, drink and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. There are three real fires and spectacular views from our beer garden which overlooks the Sussex countryside. We serve traditional hearty British food which is all home made using only the best locally sourced ingredients from carefully chosen local suppliers. There are four real ales and a decent wine list. We serve food all day, every day, so you may choose to have a late lunch, early dinner or even afternoon tea. The Mark Cross Inn was awarded the great accolade of The South East Food pub of the year in the Great British Pub Awards, Best Food Pub Category & also won customer service pub of the year in the Publican awards.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Marks Cross several times since we moved to East Sussex and the food is still of a good standard however its overpriced snd the menu balance isnt good. The level of service isnt good ie we were shown to our table next to a really loud group.and.ok were moved when we askef to be then simply forgot about. It took ages to order and.when we did get it there were ni follow up table checks to see if everything was ok. All in all a below average experience we are loath to repeat"

  • "Lovely looking pub, amazing views from the garden, friendly staff but unfortunately food wasn't great, and service very slow. We waited an hour for our food to be brought out. One of our party ordered a Greek salad which was basically a bowl of different coloured peppers and feta! No tomato/cucumber or any other salad! I'd go back here for a drink but not to eat"

  • "Food below average and overpriced. Service poor and very slow. Apart from one person, who seemed to be doing everything, the rest of staff didn't seem to understand the concept of table service."

  • "This meal was the best yet! Service was impeccable and the staff go out of your way to make you feel welcomed and well looked after. Being a veggie I am a fussy fish but the food on this occasion was one of the best vegetarian meals I have had."

  • "The food was lovely but there was only one vegetarian option we could see."

  • "We have eaten here many times and always enjoyed our food sp this was a very disappointing visit. The burger was overcooked - the fischcake overwhelmed with dill and the gardens peas with the fish had turned into mushy ones. Understaffed so everyone is rushing around with too much to do. "

  • "A large country pub set amongst rolling hillsides, if the weather is nice make sure you spend some time out in the garden because the views are hard to beat. Sunday roast is exceptional, good quality "home cooked". but it's not cheap & nor are the drinks. It is a nice relaxed place to have a family meal / special occasion, but no children's menu. Service is usually good, but can vary & gets busy so book in advance or expect to wait. One member of staff, Kieran, deserves a particular mention because he is consistently helpful & friendly, nothing is too much trouble. I recently attended a large private function at the pub with an outdoor BBQ, Kieran made sure everything ran smoothly & the food was great - resulting in lots of happy guests. "

  • "We have been before and will go again, service food and ambience perfect for a family meal, we are a grown up family and will take our grandchildren there."

  • "Had family over from Ireland who love their food. The food was absolutely delicious. The fish and chips were lovely and a good size portion.Duck breast was cooked perfectly and the potato and bacon stack will draw us back there.....soon ! We were recommended the passion fruit and poppy seed cheesecake and it was really fab and tasty.Service was good and for a thursday evening , buzzing with a good atmosphere. Highly recommended and well worth a visit."

  • "As regular visitors to the Mark Cross Inn we know what to expect but on this visit service was very slow but was probably due to the Beer Festival taking place this weekend, so we wil let them off. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and the pint of Legless Rambler went down a treat."

  • "The main courses were delicious and the meat beautifully cooked. It was a Wed and a good atmosphere too. Would definitely recommend."

  • "We took an 88 year old friend out for a birthday lunch. Food and service were both very good and the Harveys beer was very tasty too. Only negative was that it got very noisy so it was difficult to hold a conversation across the table."

  • "I have frequently eaten at the Mark Cross Inn and on this occasion, I took a friend who had never been there before - he was very impressed! The service was prompt and efficient as usual, and the staff were good humoured. Desserts were a big hit (sticky toffee pudding and a cheesecake)! We'll be back!"

  • "We were a group of six, with two children. The service was quick and friendly, the surroundings pleasant. The food was rather run of the mill, although the presentation was good. Three of us had hamburgers, which the 8-year old enjoyed more than the grown-ups, one had lambs liver, which was ok but nothing more, and obne had rather tasteless pork roast, which was drowned in gravy. The children liked their icecreams and the sticky toffee pudding was nice. The creme brulee was very mediocre. But all in all, the lunch wasn't bad and we'll return!"

  • "The food was very good and was enjoyed by all in the group, I was surprised how long we had to wait from someone coming to take our order, a long wait for the food and an even longer wait for our dessert order to be taken. It was very quiet when we went on the Sunday evening. Nonetheless we were very pleased with the food and would still return."

  • "We have visited the pub before, and several of the other Whiting & Hammond pubs but never for Sunday lunch and were rather dubious on arrival grabbing the last car park space and on entering found it busy and fairly noisy with several large groups with many children - however that aside it was probably the tastiest Sunday lunch we've had out in a pub in a very long time - the roasts followed by the Choc Bread & Butter pudding were to die for and the chef and his team pulled off a seamless meal as the meat, vegetables & gravy were all perfect. The friendly staff managed to keep the service flowing exceptionally well and we had no complaints so we can see why the venue is so popular and agree that advance booking is essential."

  • "Enjoyed this special occasion meal., tasty food, service very good, although restaurant very quiet so lacked ambiance. Staff very polite and obliging."

  • "Visited on a extremely sunny and warm Saturday lunchtime. The Mark Cross Inn was empty (even the garden) Was very surprised but now I can see why. Sat down, ordered our drinks straight away. The waitress returned twice to confirm our drinks orders, just write it down please. Food: Duck spring roll was tasty, but only one roll and was no bigger than my finger. Felt that for £8.95 it should have been bigger. Mackerel pate was bland and dry. The Burger and Ham, egg and chips where huge and tasty. You can't really go wrong with these choices . Piccalilli was especially tasty. Very let down unfortunately. Considering it was so quiet, would've expected better service like you get at the other W&H sites."

  • "It's a good pub, with a nice wide menu. The food was presented very well and it tasted good. The pub was well designed and quite smart looking. The main room was rather cold and that made the whole evening a little uncomfortable. Overall a nice venue. I would go again."

  • "Visited on a Sunday lunchtime as a birthday treat for elderly mother. We had the mixed roast which was superb, meat coat perfectly and 3 empty plates . The service was attentive but not over the top allowing us to talk without being interrupted every few minutes. Very relaxed atmosphere and was lovely to see many families with differing age groups enjoying a Sunday meal together."
    dined on 02/03/2014
  • "Awful service, drinks were missed incorrect food ordered, the waitress never bothered coming back we had to find her all in all awful! Fatty meat, stewed vegetables! Will not return!"

  • "The atmosphere was very warm, welcoming and family friendly. The venue is clean, comfortable with pleasing decor. Although very busy as there was plenty of space between tables we didn't feel crowded. There is a lovely garden with beautiful views and a play area for children. Service was quick and efficient, staff were friendly and obviously well trained. The menu was varied, food was all freshly cooked to a high standard, with an extensive wine list to complement, at reasonable prices. Sunday roast was superb and plenty of it. Our visit was very enjoyable and relaxed and we left the restaurant feeling well fed and looked after. Overall, superb food, excellent value for money. We will certainly return."

  • "I booked a table 6 weeks in advance for my son's 18th Birthday. Arriving at the Pub armed with presents and Balloon and my elderly parents we then waited 30 minutes before our table was ready. Although we were offered a seat at the bar I was very disappointed that a special occasion had been slightly dampened. If you book a table for 2pm on a Sunday you expect itto have been cleared maybe 15 minutes before, not have the previous diners still there eating at 2.30!!"

  • "Great food, service was a little slow which is hard work when you have young children....."

  • "Attractive space, but the food was a bit beyond the kitchen's abilities. Service fine, though fell apart a bit by the end. Noticeably not busy on Valentine's Day."

  • "This company has the smallest menu avaliable. I would never bother going back again. Very disappointing. We went up the road to the Abergavenny!!! Much better."

  • "Pleasant young staff , always good when led by Kieran , as he keeps an eye on everything . Such an easy and informal place for meeting friends."

  • "Sunday lunch for 3 was perfect. The table was near the open fire, great for a cold day. We got shown to our table and then had our drinks order taken. Quick service and soon the food was in front of us. We all had roasts which were delicious as well as a generous serving of vegetables. Great choice of desserts too. We never felt rushed and the restaurant was extremely busy. Will be going back for sure."

  • "A very enjoyable evening...although our table was a little hidden away it was still a cosy location and was well looked after."

  • "Have eaten here a few times, usually in the summer and sit outside in the garden. We decided to book Sunday lunch here on the 26/01/14 for a family occasion . Had a table by the fire , nice as it was a horrible rainy day. Service was first class with staff being very polite and friendly. The place was completely full and the staff were very calm and professional . The food was excellent and of a very high standard with all the extra trimmings. Two of us had the roast chicken for two which was a whole roast chicken and was too much for us to eat, but we were given a doggy bag so we could take it home for our pet. Very reasonably priced. All in all an excellent time was had by all."
    dined on 26/01/2014
  • "We have been to The Mark Cross Inn Twice in the last 8 weeks. However the restaurant is always cold (none of the radiators are on) and a lot of people were still wearing their coats or a very thick jumper whilst eating their lunch! the service was very slow even though the restaurant was not busy - we had to wait 45 mins for our main course to arrive. I chose the Seam Bream which was cooked in a lot of oil (it was practically doing the backstroke in it!) and it was served with no lemon and frozen potatoes! If you want a good hamburger - this is the place to go, but make sure you wear something to keep you warm.-but if you don't like hamburgers then choose somewhere else to go."

  • "Always good food and very busy. Good wine list and attentive staff."

  • "So many staff standing around doing nothing! Went for and early evening Sunday dinner (6.30) 3/4 tables in use and almost one staff member per customer but oh my goodness they took their time!! Had to go and find staff to take orders, bring desert menus, everything! They were around but just chatting amongst themselves paying no attention at all. Food OK - burgers were good, sausage and mash ok but no veg at all unless you count onion rings. At £11ish I don't want to pay extra for veg! Mixed roast was disappointing; potatoes slimy rather than crispy - had barely seen the oven if at all - carrots rock hard, meat OK but pork mostly fat and gristle. Used to be very good - disappointed at the fall in standards - would not go back or recommend."

  • "We decided to bring a friend here for lunch - her first visit but she had heard us talk about it a lot! The ambience is very relaxed and the waiting staff are always friendly, efficient and helpful when required. Our party had guinea fowl coq au vin (excellent amount of guinea fowl), the 'large roast', with succulent cuts of beef, lamb and pork, and salmon with a pine nut crust and watercress sauce. Side vegetables came with the roast and easily fed two of us! As always, another very enjoyable meal."
    dined on 29/12/2013
  • "The pub was simply overwhelmed by having a full dining room. I had to get my own drinks (even mid-meal). we waited ages to give our order but I was not allowed to give it at the bar - we had to wait for a waitress who wasn't about. Coffees arrived without milk/cream etc. In short, there seems little point in having a big restaurant if all you can manage is a small one. why upset a lot of people?"
