A word from The Mark Cross Inn
The Mark Cross Inn is a beautiful pub, a place to meet, eat, drink and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. There are three real fires and spectacular views from our beer garden which overlooks the Sussex countryside. We serve traditional hearty British food which is all home made using only the best locally sourced ingredients from carefully chosen local suppliers. There are four real ales and a decent wine list. We serve food all day, every day, so you may choose to have a late lunch, early dinner or even afternoon tea. The Mark Cross Inn was awarded the great accolade of The South East Food pub of the year in the Great British Pub Awards, Best Food Pub Category & also won customer service pub of the year in the Publican awards.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was very good and was enjoyed by all in the group, I was surprised how long we had to wait from someone coming to take our order, a long wait for the food and an even longer wait for our dessert order to be taken. It was very quiet when we went on the Sunday evening. Nonetheless we were very pleased with the food and would still return."

  • "We have visited the pub before, and several of the other Whiting & Hammond pubs but never for Sunday lunch and were rather dubious on arrival grabbing the last car park space and on entering found it busy and fairly noisy with several large groups with many children - however that aside it was probably the tastiest Sunday lunch we've had out in a pub in a very long time - the roasts followed by the Choc Bread & Butter pudding were to die for and the chef and his team pulled off a seamless meal as the meat, vegetables & gravy were all perfect. The friendly staff managed to keep the service flowing exceptionally well and we had no complaints so we can see why the venue is so popular and agree that advance booking is essential."

  • "Enjoyed this special occasion meal., tasty food, service very good, although restaurant very quiet so lacked ambiance. Staff very polite and obliging."

  • "The main courses were delicious and the meat beautifully cooked. It was a Wed and a good atmosphere too. Would definitely recommend."

  • "Visited on a extremely sunny and warm Saturday lunchtime. The Mark Cross Inn was empty (even the garden) Was very surprised but now I can see why. Sat down, ordered our drinks straight away. The waitress returned twice to confirm our drinks orders, just write it down please. Food: Duck spring roll was tasty, but only one roll and was no bigger than my finger. Felt that for £8.95 it should have been bigger. Mackerel pate was bland and dry. The Burger and Ham, egg and chips where huge and tasty. You can't really go wrong with these choices . Piccalilli was especially tasty. Very let down unfortunately. Considering it was so quiet, would've expected better service like you get at the other W&H sites."

  • "It's a good pub, with a nice wide menu. The food was presented very well and it tasted good. The pub was well designed and quite smart looking. The main room was rather cold and that made the whole evening a little uncomfortable. Overall a nice venue. I would go again."

  • "Visited on a Sunday lunchtime as a birthday treat for elderly mother. We had the mixed roast which was superb, meat coat perfectly and 3 empty plates . The service was attentive but not over the top allowing us to talk without being interrupted every few minutes. Very relaxed atmosphere and was lovely to see many families with differing age groups enjoying a Sunday meal together."

  • "Awful service, drinks were missed incorrect food ordered, the waitress never bothered coming back we had to find her all in all awful! Fatty meat, stewed vegetables! Will not return!"

  • "The atmosphere was very warm, welcoming and family friendly. The venue is clean, comfortable with pleasing decor. Although very busy as there was plenty of space between tables we didn't feel crowded. There is a lovely garden with beautiful views and a play area for children. Service was quick and efficient, staff were friendly and obviously well trained. The menu was varied, food was all freshly cooked to a high standard, with an extensive wine list to complement, at reasonable prices. Sunday roast was superb and plenty of it. Our visit was very enjoyable and relaxed and we left the restaurant feeling well fed and looked after. Overall, superb food, excellent value for money. We will certainly return."

  • "Great food, service was a little slow which is hard work when you have young children....."

  • "I booked a table 6 weeks in advance for my son's 18th Birthday. Arriving at the Pub armed with presents and Balloon and my elderly parents we then waited 30 minutes before our table was ready. Although we were offered a seat at the bar I was very disappointed that a special occasion had been slightly dampened. If you book a table for 2pm on a Sunday you expect itto have been cleared maybe 15 minutes before, not have the previous diners still there eating at 2.30!!"

  • "This company has the smallest menu avaliable. I would never bother going back again. Very disappointing. We went up the road to the Abergavenny!!! Much better."

  • "Attractive space, but the food was a bit beyond the kitchen's abilities. Service fine, though fell apart a bit by the end. Noticeably not busy on Valentine's Day."

  • "Pleasant young staff , always good when led by Kieran , as he keeps an eye on everything . Such an easy and informal place for meeting friends."

  • "Sunday lunch for 3 was perfect. The table was near the open fire, great for a cold day. We got shown to our table and then had our drinks order taken. Quick service and soon the food was in front of us. We all had roasts which were delicious as well as a generous serving of vegetables. Great choice of desserts too. We never felt rushed and the restaurant was extremely busy. Will be going back for sure."

  • "A very enjoyable evening...although our table was a little hidden away it was still a cosy location and was well looked after."

  • "Have eaten here a few times, usually in the summer and sit outside in the garden. We decided to book Sunday lunch here on the 26/01/14 for a family occasion . Had a table by the fire , nice as it was a horrible rainy day. Service was first class with staff being very polite and friendly. The place was completely full and the staff were very calm and professional . The food was excellent and of a very high standard with all the extra trimmings. Two of us had the roast chicken for two which was a whole roast chicken and was too much for us to eat, but we were given a doggy bag so we could take it home for our pet. Very reasonably priced. All in all an excellent time was had by all."

  • "We have been to The Mark Cross Inn Twice in the last 8 weeks. However the restaurant is always cold (none of the radiators are on) and a lot of people were still wearing their coats or a very thick jumper whilst eating their lunch! the service was very slow even though the restaurant was not busy - we had to wait 45 mins for our main course to arrive. I chose the Seam Bream which was cooked in a lot of oil (it was practically doing the backstroke in it!) and it was served with no lemon and frozen potatoes! If you want a good hamburger - this is the place to go, but make sure you wear something to keep you warm.-but if you don't like hamburgers then choose somewhere else to go."

  • "We loved our meal at this restaurant espcially the duo of lamb which was divine. Cant wait to return."

  • "So many staff standing around doing nothing! Went for and early evening Sunday dinner (6.30) 3/4 tables in use and almost one staff member per customer but oh my goodness they took their time!! Had to go and find staff to take orders, bring desert menus, everything! They were around but just chatting amongst themselves paying no attention at all. Food OK - burgers were good, sausage and mash ok but no veg at all unless you count onion rings. At £11ish I don't want to pay extra for veg! Mixed roast was disappointing; potatoes slimy rather than crispy - had barely seen the oven if at all - carrots rock hard, meat OK but pork mostly fat and gristle. Used to be very good - disappointed at the fall in standards - would not go back or recommend."
    dined on 05/01/2014
  • "We decided to bring a friend here for lunch - her first visit but she had heard us talk about it a lot! The ambience is very relaxed and the waiting staff are always friendly, efficient and helpful when required. Our party had guinea fowl coq au vin (excellent amount of guinea fowl), the 'large roast', with succulent cuts of beef, lamb and pork, and salmon with a pine nut crust and watercress sauce. Side vegetables came with the roast and easily fed two of us! As always, another very enjoyable meal."
    dined on 29/12/2013
  • "The pub was simply overwhelmed by having a full dining room. I had to get my own drinks (even mid-meal). we waited ages to give our order but I was not allowed to give it at the bar - we had to wait for a waitress who wasn't about. Coffees arrived without milk/cream etc. In short, there seems little point in having a big restaurant if all you can manage is a small one. why upset a lot of people?"
    dined on 28/12/2013
  • "Good meal and service but we've had to wait quite long for our food due to place being busy."
    dined on 26/12/2013
  • "We had to wait over 90 minutes for our food, the welcome was was very cold, no one checked if we needed anything during our meal and every time we needed any thing we had to actively seek out assistance. The menu advertised on their 'updated website' was not available in house. ."
    dined on 24/12/2013
  • "We were a little disappointed with the service. We had at least 3 different people serving our table, which was confusing. One of which didn't really know what he was doing (he was new I guess?). Had to wait quite a long time before anyone took our order, was then quite a long wait for the food. The table was half cleared then left for a while. Desserts seem to take forever. However, everyone was very polite, the birthday dessert for my Nan was a lovely touch, the place itself is beautiful and the food is fantastic, so don't let the service put you off! It was also the Sunday before Christmas, so very busy!"
    dined on 22/12/2013
  • "Popped in with my mother after Christmas shopping. Ordered olives and bread whilst waiting for main which arrived straight away. I then had an excellent mixed grill which was good value for money. Steak cooked perfectly (medium rare). My mother had the Fish & Chips which looked lovely. She ate it all and is something of a fussy eater so well done chef! Great service and high quality pub food. Will return!!"
    dined on 16/12/2013
  • "I went there to meet my friend for dinner when arrived staff very friendly showed us our table it was very busy as they had a lot of Christmas parties there, service was good didn't have to wait to long to be served or for the food to come out food was really nice."
    dined on 17/12/2013
  • "I have been to mark cross inn a few times and the food is always exceptional. Service was quick and friendly too. I always have the shoulder of lamb which is delicious."
    dined on 14/12/2013
  • "Lovely setting and atmosphere. All the staff very welcoming and attentive. Really child friendly with lots of options for little ones. Food was lovely and portion size is very good, so good value for money. Only slight complaint is the time it took for the food to come to the table, when you have small ones waiting a long time for their food isn't something they are very good at doing."
    dined on 07/12/2013
  • "We were running late and left a friend sitting alone at bar for 30 mins. The staff were very kind to her and kept checking she was OK. Excellent friendly service and much appreciated gesture for round of drinks on house when dinner took a little time to arrive. Considering it was a very busy Friday night before Christmas we would have expected to wait a little while anyway. Food v good and portions huge - certainly value for money. Next time we visit will consult a map beforehand!"
    dined on 06/12/2013
  • "I found it very warm and relaxed will definitely come again. Very good food and value for money."
    dined on 06/12/2013
  • "main course was good .but when we ordered deserts it took them a while to come back and say they had run out of the following which mainly left ice type deserts, considering it was a Sunday afternoon and an early seating .found it difficult to understand especially you had to book to have a table.so they must have kown how people they had in. plus the service was slow considering how many staff they had on duty,"
    dined on 24/11/2013
  • "Having visited this restaurant many times its always been good as a nice evening meal out that is much more like a restaurant than pub food than many places serve in the area. On this occasion this was not the case, although there were no complaints regarding the food (although onion rings with sausage and mash didn't really work) we felt it wasn't the usual standard offered previously. There were a lot of pub basics when usually there is higher quality/more restaurant style different dishes. Service was good on the whole though (although one member of staff was bit flustered - perhaps she was new) particularly the lady who discussed menu/new chef with us."
    dined on 06/11/2013
  • "Most of us ordered the fish & chips, the more adventurous opting for the large; beautifully cooked & presented and tasted amazing . Sadly the large proved too large even for our hungry hoard but they happily wrapped it up for us to take home. My husband opted for the lamb shoulder which was meltingly tender & delicious. Service fast and friendly. Thanks for another great meal, you never disappoint!"

  • "Prebooked table for four adults and 7month old baby. Highchair ready as requested but very helpful waitress asked if we would prefer a different table to accommodate sleeping baby in buggy - very happy to move everything and set a different table. Service was prompt and friendly (have had some poor experiences here in the past!) Food arrived hot and well-cooked - fish cakes and battered fish delicious and meat pie thoroughly enjoyed. Desserts beauifully presented and delicious. All in all an ideal venue for a family lunch and many thanks to our lovely waitress."
