A word from The Marquis
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else...

It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant with rooms. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics – the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed.

High quality food beautifully presented. The beef was cooked to perfection - possibly the best I've ever eaten. Staff know the provenance of the food, are knowledgeable about the entire menu and are very helpful and friendly. Menu changes regularly, with plenty of seasonal produce.

We went for the tasting menu. It was very nice, especially the cucumber sorbet. The local wines were excellent. Staff very knowledgable about the menu and wine and were very attentive. The steak was not quite cooked to how we had ordered it although it was still quite nice. We did highlight this to the waiter and received complimentary coffee and petit fours. Overall it was a great evening and i would recommend a visit to friends

This was our third visit within 2 months and it seems as though the Head Chef has left. The bread and bread sauce was tasteless, the beef was tough, the cauliflower cheese watery. The service staff are charming but we won't be returning.

Visited on Sunday for lunch and were pretty disappointed. Very quiet restaurant but whilst we were there, two 'walk ins' were turned away and a couple on a neighbouring table (the only other table being served) received the wrong order,so ended up eating their main courses 20minutes apart. Our cheesecake was set too solid to eat and the waitress didn't know her parfait from her cheesecake anyway- she didn't seem to have been briefed at all. We live locally and so this wasn't a huge journey for us, but you'd be gutted if you'd traveled any distance for this experience , or if you'd banked on it as a special occasion. Previous meals here have been better tasting and less chaotic - standards appear to have slipped though :-(

This was our first visit to the Marquis, everything from booking the table, to the meal, service and value for money was excellent. I hope they change the lunch offer regularly as this is the only limiting factor. I would say that my main was as tasty as some I have eaten in 3 star restaurants.....

Given the change in Head Chef, we wanted to return to The Marquis after a few months. The '10 Mile' menu has changed to a 'Kent' Menu (and increased in proice a little, we think). Still good value for money (2 courses £12.50, 3 for £15.50) though the portions can be a bit on the small side (hearty eaters should add a side or two) this was particularly true of the velouté which, although very nice, was poured into my bowl at the table and hardly covered the bottom of the bowl! (It was very nice though). Seeing very small desserts at other tables, we opted for coffee & petits fours instead - for just £1 each more we decided this was better value (& the petits fours were very nice). So good, but not quite as good value for money as before.

very overpriced for East Kent, soulless décor and ambiance, tatty dining furniture obviously bought from a closing city pub, English ale served super-chilled when is should be between 12-14 degrees C reflecting ignorance of staff, one waiter was not British and was impossible to understand, apart from that it was perfect.

I decided to take my sister for a special birthday lunch at The Marquis. On arrival the staff were very friendly and the restaurant was light and airy and, even on a day when the temperature was very high, was comfortable. Our waiters were very helpful and pleasant without being intrusive and the home made rolls were delicious! We had the scallops to start which were perfectly cooked and the Saltmarsh lamb for our main course which was absolutely delicious. The only hiccup was that the chef had cooked Apricot Clafoutis instead of the Cherry we had ordered and so we had to wait a little longer for dessert. The coffee and petit fours were up to the same standard as the rest of the meal. We will definitely be going back!!

The Marquis is our favourite restaurant. However, we are retired and can only afford to visit whenever there is an offer. I'm not suggesting the food is overpriced but it is a little above our budget generally. The food is wonderful, the staff are excellent, the ambience perfect. A real gem in the valley!

This was possibly the best meal we've ever had and we've had quite a few! Booked for my husband's birthday it really was a treat. From the dainty canapés to the deliciously light Cherry Clafoutis it was well presented and superbly cooked. We had Saltmarsh Lamb and it just melted in the mouth. Don't expect large portions, this is more cuisine nouvelle, but every mouthful was delicious. The service was unobtrusive and excellent. Wine could be bought in a 375cl carafe, which suited us perfectly and tap water was automatically brought to the table and glasses refilled whenever they were low. I was delighted that no-one kept asking if everything was alright - there was plenty of opportunity to express an opinion on the food between courses.

We have watched with interest the the transformation into The Marquis. After a try out lunch which we enjoyed very much In 2011, we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our closest friends which was very successful especially as we were a little concerned regarding vegetarian options however we and our guests were impressed with the meal and service. Since then we have returned for 2 or 3 times for Sunday lunch as well as the fixed price lunch menu during the week, we have not been disappointed at any time with the meal or service, these menus are good value for money. We had a la carte lunch this week which was very good, the lamb was stunning as were the deserts.

As usual I found the food and presentation first class. The dining room is very well set out. I notice that when they have a party group that they are kept away from the other diners, although they can be annoying sometimes with their laughter. The only drawback I found was the car parking facilities. Not very large area and a difficult entry and exit.

Excellent 4 course fixed choice dinner, for £30 could not fault the food (dips, amuse bouche, fish, main & dessert). Service appeared a bit slow (main course arrived 2 hours after sitting down) but on reflection perhaps we needed a big break between each course! Chef used some unusual ingredients, we are foodies and they were new to us but nicely used e.g Creeping Charlie. Wine list for a pub was a bit pricey, no house wines on offer and only one bottle on the whole extensive list was under £20, this needs addressing we think. However we'll definitely go back, this one's a keeper

Really lovely restaurant. We've been there a few times and it never fails to deliver. The food coming out was a bit slow this visit, but it was worth the wait. We had the 4 course £30 menu and it was delightful. I am Gluten Free, and they catered for me without a problem, and said I could have any menu. Definatley going back.

A family celebration at lunchtime failed to be delighted by the restaurant's culinary provision. Whilst the service was consistently good and helpful, much of the 10 Mile Menu selected failed to offer anything that proved to be particularly tasty or special. The exception being the bisque which had diners' taste buds jangling. The plaice supplied as the main course was overcooked and left much to be desired. The wine list offered a limited range, yet even the most expensive white selected proved to be nothing exceptional i.e, seemed overpriced. However, the ambiance for dining was good and promoted a relaxed atmosphere. Returning any time soon? Most unlikely.

We arrived for Easter lunch (at 12.30) and it took 45 minutes to have the starter served, though the restaurant was half empty. It was a menu, so it should not have taken so long. Asparagus was delicious but the portion, really small. Then, we had to wait another hour for the main course. We had 2 soles and one beef: they were really good and well presented . The desserts were superb (Souffle rhubarb). Altogether, the whole meal took almost 3 hours and that did spoil a bit the experience.(That 's why I put 3 stars only for the service). Otherwise, the waiters were very kind. By the time we left, the restaurant was full and we observed that by then, the kitchen seemed to follow the orders better than for us. We took my Mother to the Marquis for a three generations lunch on Sunday and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it. The food, as ever, was excellent and beautifully presented, good enough to tempt even my mother's tiny appetite. Everyone was impressed with the size of the Yorkshire puddings and the Natural Yoghurt Pannecotta with Rhubarb and Ginger Parkin was deliciously light and tart; will definitely order that again. The Mother's Day gifts were a nice touch and much appreciated. Thank you to all the Marquis team.

Have eaten at the Marquis several times and always been very satisfied. Unfortunately, on this occasion the standard was definitely lacking. On the positive side, the 10-mile lunch offers incredible value, especially as it includes amuse bouche and home-baked bread. The starter and pudding were fine, but the cooking of the main course was not up to the expected standard. Smoked haddock was a bit overcooked while the poached egg had a set yolk. Also the friendly and efficient waiting staff were sadly let down by VERY slow kitchen service (well over 2 hours for a 3 course meal.) We would not write the restaurant off on the basis of this one disappointing experience, but would need to try it again before considering recommending it.

6 course tasting menu - it was stunning! Every course was an absolute delight, the chef is clearly hugely talented, and we had a fantastic evening, it was a real tasting experience. The menu was clearly well thought out, and worked really well. The wine was also fantastic, as were the staff who were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. I would really struggle to choose a favourite course, but the smoked brill really was brill, and the beef course was delicious - but so was the special lemon and really unusual berry I can't remember the name of posset, the best dessert I have ever eaten, the ginger ice cream was amazing. All in all, a fantastic evening, absolutely delighted with the food - a real pleasure.

Unfortunately, this dining experience was very poor. We arrived for Sunday lunch and ordered our drinks but it was some 20 minutes later that the waiter took our meal order even though we had put down our menus and tried extremely hard to catch his eye. I had to actually go up to him and ask if we could order! When we had finished our main course we were asked if we would like to order a dessert and said we would, the waiter said he would go and get the menu but again the same waiter walked in and out of the restaurant, walking past us to serve other customers and even loitering to clear someone's table but yet NO sign of the menu. Again I had to ask for it before ordering. I would think twice about going here again.

Lovely experience at the Marquis. Having come across the channel for the day from Belgium, we shopped in the morning in Ashford, then made our way to the Marquis for lunch. We got a bit lost and called, and the hostess guided us all the way there using her map on the computer in front of her. The lunch menu was original but not very tempting, seemed a bit complex and not very straightforward. However the food was divine, off the beaten track, and definitely much better than all the pub food we have tried on other forays in the region. We sampled the local sparkling wine, delicious, and dessert and coffee topped off an excellent meal. Views of the village and countryside made for cozy atmosphere despite recent flood
