A word from The Marquis
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else...

It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant with rooms. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics – the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was possibly the best meal we've ever had and we've had quite a few! Booked for my husband's birthday it really was a treat. From the dainty canapés to the deliciously light Cherry Clafoutis it was well presented and superbly cooked. We had Saltmarsh Lamb and it just melted in the mouth. Don't expect large portions, this is more cuisine nouvelle, but every mouthful was delicious. The service was unobtrusive and excellent. Wine could be bought in a 375cl carafe, which suited us perfectly and tap water was automatically brought to the table and glasses refilled whenever they were low. I was delighted that no-one kept asking if everything was alright - there was plenty of opportunity to express an opinion on the food between courses."

  • "We have watched with interest the the transformation into The Marquis. After a try out lunch which we enjoyed very much In 2011, we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our closest friends which was very successful especially as we were a little concerned regarding vegetarian options however we and our guests were impressed with the meal and service. Since then we have returned for 2 or 3 times for Sunday lunch as well as the fixed price lunch menu during the week, we have not been disappointed at any time with the meal or service, these menus are good value for money. We had a la carte lunch this week which was very good, the lamb was stunning as were the deserts."

  • "As usual food was up to their impeccable standard, have not been let down yet."

  • "As usual I found the food and presentation first class. The dining room is very well set out. I notice that when they have a party group that they are kept away from the other diners, although they can be annoying sometimes with their laughter. The only drawback I found was the car parking facilities. Not very large area and a difficult entry and exit."

  • "Excellent 4 course fixed choice dinner, for £30 could not fault the food (dips, amuse bouche, fish, main & dessert). Service appeared a bit slow (main course arrived 2 hours after sitting down) but on reflection perhaps we needed a big break between each course! Chef used some unusual ingredients, we are foodies and they were new to us but nicely used e.g Creeping Charlie. Wine list for a pub was a bit pricey, no house wines on offer and only one bottle on the whole extensive list was under £20, this needs addressing we think. However we'll definitely go back, this one's a keeper "

  • "Really lovely restaurant. We've been there a few times and it never fails to deliver. The food coming out was a bit slow this visit, but it was worth the wait. We had the 4 course £30 menu and it was delightful. I am Gluten Free, and they catered for me without a problem, and said I could have any menu. Definatley going back."

  • "We opted for the set lunch which was very good value for the quality & presentation of the food. The waiting staff were attentive when required. We have been here a few times for lunch and on 1 occasion an overnight stay & have not been disappointed with any visit."

  • "A family celebration at lunchtime failed to be delighted by the restaurant's culinary provision. Whilst the service was consistently good and helpful, much of the 10 Mile Menu selected failed to offer anything that proved to be particularly tasty or special. The exception being the bisque which had diners' taste buds jangling. The plaice supplied as the main course was overcooked and left much to be desired. The wine list offered a limited range, yet even the most expensive white selected proved to be nothing exceptional i.e, seemed overpriced. However, the ambiance for dining was good and promoted a relaxed atmosphere. Returning any time soon? Most unlikely."

  • "We chose the 6 course tasting menu . Every course was delicious and although the portions were very small , as expected, we were definitely not hungry by the end of the meal ! The service was superb and all in all a very pleasant evening . "

  • "We arrived for Easter lunch (at 12.30) and it took 45 minutes to have the starter served, though the restaurant was half empty. It was a menu, so it should not have taken so long. Asparagus was delicious but the portion, really small. Then, we had to wait another hour for the main course. We had 2 soles and one beef: they were really good and well presented . The desserts were superb (Souffle rhubarb). Altogether, the whole meal took almost 3 hours and that did spoil a bit the experience.(That 's why I put 3 stars only for the service). Otherwise, the waiters were very kind. By the time we left, the restaurant was full and we observed that by then, the kitchen seemed to follow the orders better than for us. PS: Great wheelchair access. "

  • "The staff were very helpful as we had both a diabled person and a baby with us for them meal. They selected a wheelchair friendly table and provided a high chair for the baby. The food was to the usual high standard we expect from the Marquis"

  • "We enjoyed a delightful few hours at the Marquis sampling the Kentish tasting menu. We were unhurried, the house wines were excellent and the food unique and delicious. Also very friendly and competent staff, and a beautiful setting."

  • "First trip to this establishment. Would highly recommend it to anyone! Only slight disappointment was lack of bread offered during meal."

  • "We took my Mother to the Marquis for a three generations lunch on Sunday and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it. The food, as ever, was excellent and beautifully presented, good enough to tempt even my mother's tiny appetite. Everyone was impressed with the size of the Yorkshire puddings and the Natural Yoghurt Pannecotta with Rhubarb and Ginger Parkin was deliciously light and tart; will definitely order that again. The Mother's Day gifts were a nice touch and much appreciated. Thank you to all the Marquis team."

  • "Have eaten at the Marquis several times and always been very satisfied. Unfortunately, on this occasion the standard was definitely lacking. On the positive side, the 10-mile lunch offers incredible value, especially as it includes amuse bouche and home-baked bread. The starter and pudding were fine, but the cooking of the main course was not up to the expected standard. Smoked haddock was a bit overcooked while the poached egg had a set yolk. Also the friendly and efficient waiting staff were sadly let down by VERY slow kitchen service (well over 2 hours for a 3 course meal.) We would not write the restaurant off on the basis of this one disappointing experience, but would need to try it again before considering recommending it."

  • "6 course tasting menu - it was stunning! Every course was an absolute delight, the chef is clearly hugely talented, and we had a fantastic evening, it was a real tasting experience. The menu was clearly well thought out, and worked really well. The wine was also fantastic, as were the staff who were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. I would really struggle to choose a favourite course, but the smoked brill really was brill, and the beef course was delicious - but so was the special lemon and really unusual berry I can't remember the name of posset, the best dessert I have ever eaten, the ginger ice cream was amazing. All in all, a fantastic evening, absolutely delighted with the food - a real pleasure."

  • "Unfortunately, this dining experience was very poor. We arrived for Sunday lunch and ordered our drinks but it was some 20 minutes later that the waiter took our meal order even though we had put down our menus and tried extremely hard to catch his eye. I had to actually go up to him and ask if we could order! When we had finished our main course we were asked if we would like to order a dessert and said we would, the waiter said he would go and get the menu but again the same waiter walked in and out of the restaurant, walking past us to serve other customers and even loitering to clear someone's table but yet NO sign of the menu. Again I had to ask for it before ordering. I would think twice about going here again."

  • "Fantastic food, amazing service and a quiet relaxed atmosphere. The Marquis of Alkham is a must for that special occasion."

  • "Yet again The Marquis was outstanding. The staff are very knowledgable about the food and wines, and always there when you want them, but can't be seen when you don't. The food is perfectly prepared, perfectly presented, and the flavour combinations are to die for. Everything is locally sourced and/or foraged, so you get some great and unusual combinations. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.....if you haven't been, get it on your list of things to do."

  • "Lovely experience at the Marquis. Having come across the channel for the day from Belgium, we shopped in the morning in Ashford, then made our way to the Marquis for lunch. We got a bit lost and called, and the hostess guided us all the way there using her map on the computer in front of her. The lunch menu was original but not very tempting, seemed a bit complex and not very straightforward. However the food was divine, off the beaten track, and definitely much better than all the pub food we have tried on other forays in the region. We sampled the local sparkling wine, delicious, and dessert and coffee topped off an excellent meal. Views of the village and countryside made for cozy atmosphere despite recent flood"

  • "The Marquis is a lovely restaurant set in the country side with stunning views over rolling hills. The food is excellent and the waiters very attentive. the only thing that spoilt it for me is that it doesn't have much of an atmosphere, no real ambience and on this occasion there was a gentleman diner two tables away who was extremely loud and actually ruined our whole dining experience."

  • "Great value '10 mile lunch' menu - with all ingredients sourced from within 10 miles, in lovely setting with great walks on the doorstep. Skilful, unfussy cooking (on that menu at least) and very good service."

  • "Don't miss out on this fabulous restaurant tucked away down near the Kent coast ...it is a treat not to have to traipse up to London and equally as good if not better than some of the overpriced and pretentious eateries I have tried there. We enjoyed the six course tasting menu with selected wines for each course.all beautifully cooked and presented. It is worth staying over in one of their superb rooms to complete a special experience."

  • "Went to the Marquis on a Sunday afternoon with friends. Chose Sunday roast, with starters and dessert. The roast beef was adequate. The pub itself has been very nicely refurbished, and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. We stayed for a couple of hours, and left at the table after our meal, without being offered coffee/tea, probably as it was late Sunday afternoon, and we were the only table left, they were hoping we would hurry up and leave! The total bill was £170, which included 2 bottles, and 1 caraf of wine, 1 diet coke, water, 4 starters (which involved dividing 1 mushroom between 3), 4 main course (adequate), 2 desserts. A village pub, that I suspect is out of the price range for most of the villagers. Would not visit again."

  • "Oddly unrelaxing, too much front of house business, lots of stemware arrangement and fussing with bits of wood and slate. We'd pre-paid for the food but the cost of drinks was eye watering. The food was very good however, fresh local ingredients, skillfully and imaginatively presented."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "Well what can I say, excellent service and truly amazing food, we had the 6 course tasting menu, firstly I ate things I would never have thought I would have eaten and secondly each course got better than the previous one, our favourite was the Dexter beef, wow. We will definitely be back. Compliments to the chef."

  • "I have never visited a restaurant that could be so good and so bad on a single visit. The good -overall ambience pleasing, nibbles with drinks were home made as was the bread. The bread in particular merits particular praise, it was excellent. Moving on to the food, would not fault starter or the vegetables. Puddings were fine, cheese and hand made bread crisp truly excellent. Service from staff was pleasant and friendly. The bad - the toughest roast beef I have ever tasted, When I pointed this out to the waiter he seemed to know that it was tough, adding that it was silverside and had been cooking for 12 hours. His solution was to provide sharper knives! Tea and coffee (a cup) were served at £4 each without biscuits, or a refill."

  • "Excellent food, imaginatively prepared for a budget on the very good value '10 mile' menu, with generous breads and other small 'extras'. Friendly and attentive service. Spacious dining room with plenty of room and lovely rural views, even on a wet Saturday lunchtime in January. Pity that the list of local Kent ciders has been cut back. All round excellence - very enjoyable."

  • "The idea of local , foraged produce intrigued us enough to try the Marquis for a lunch date. We were not disappointed. The ambience was casual but elegant and staff unpretentious and very friendly they happily answered our questions and conversing appropriately and with good humour. The food was beautifully prepared with out too much fussy garnishing. And not so big I felt overwhelmed (as is a trend with other restaurants) I am looking for an excuse to go back soon to try the seasonal offerings mother nature has kindly bestowed upon us and the good folk at the Marquis to experiment with"

  • "We had the ten mile menu when we visited on Friday lunchtime and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was flavoursome and beautifully presented. The service was attentive but not overbearing. We have eaten at this restaurant on previous occasions and never been disappointed. A relaxed yet formal atmosphere, perfect to enjoy a conversation whilst eating delicious food."
