Diner Reviews
  • "Booked in for Sunday Brunch, professional service and extensive menu. Enjoyed the matcha latte, omelette and waffle."
    dined on 17/08/2014
  • "Wonderful anniversary meal, fabulous flavours and contrasts in the food. Familiar dishes given a twist with Japanese ingredients to great effect. Service was also superb and friendly. My wife's lamb was just slightly undercooked for her liking but they made her another full dish without any problems. We would highly recommend this lovely restaurant."

  • "I used to eat here regularly - at least once a month. The food is still great, but the service has changed dramatically. It used to be staffed by knowledgeable but relaxed staff with a very cool vibe. Now the service is very abrupt, staffed by mediocre (mostly French) staff and much much less fun. Shame."

  • "Faultless service and beautiful restaurant with sunny outdoor seating but let down by the food. Two breakfast dishes very simple and small with eggs grossly overcooked and no finesse as previously experienced here."

  • "Gorgeous Caravan brewed coffee and the tastiest bacon! The location is great and the service is very attentive without being too full on. Would definitely recommend for a nice treat breakfast."

  • "In the depths of Clerkenwell, devoid of people on a Sunday, this trendy eatery fully deserves its enthusiastic write-ups. The menu is wide-ranging and innovative. The average age of the clientele was around 25, and there was a distinct buzz. There is good outside seating and the house itself is beautiful, with upstairs quieter than down. There is a good range of drinks, reasonably priced. An occasion not to be missed, but rather to be soon repeated."

  • "We had an interesting lunch spoiled a little by the side dishes arriving too late and one order not being the dish ordered. As a result one of our party ate after we had finished. ' Pity - the decor and location are great but we'd think twice before going for lunch again."

  • "We dined here last week and on first impressions this place was great: the staff were friendly, it was modern and clean and in the heart of bustling St John's Square. There is plenty of space to enjoy a pre-dinner drink outside, too. The cocktail list is impressive, and the recommended wines on the menu were well-chosen. However, the main problem was the food. After reading many reviews, I came here under the impression I was going to be eating high-class food. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. I ordered a sugared prawn omelette to start which would have been great if it contained more than 2 prawns. For £9.20 I expect a little more (and i'm not averse to paying for good food). The onglet steak was tough and chewy. I wouldn't return."

  • "Four dined. All chose different dishes and all scored. Onglet steak particularly. Feta pea and courgette fritter sublime. Eaton mess wonderfull."
    dined on 02/08/2014
  • "I had the corn, feta, green chilli and curry leaf waffle with streaky smoked bacon - delicious! Pot of tea was lovely but the crockery was nothing special. Had numerous different waiting staff ask to take our drink orders which showed they weren't communicating much but everyone was friendly and polite."

  • "İ am dissapointed i was expecting more from chef i choosed the duck for starters and steak main course lots of ingeridiatant but not matching taste"
    dined on 29/07/2014
  • "Really enjoyed our meal - innovative interesting but service was just not really up to par. Slow, tap water with no ice on a sunny day just almost plonked on the table. Cocktail list quite a few were unavailable due to missing ingredients ;-("

  • "Would highly recommend this restaurant for brunch - it's light, airy, in a lovely location and the food is delicious. The menu is extensive yet not too overwhelming and the service is excellent. No complaints!"
    dined on 27/07/2014
  • "I enjoyed my meal here, but I have to say the food was not as outstanding as the food I am used to getting at the Modern Pantry. My poached eggs had completely solid yolks and my chorizo was too fatty and too bland. I can make better much brunch at home! I might give it another chance or two before I let it fall off my list of top brunch places in London."
    dined on 27/07/2014
  • "Fantastic brunch. We had the cornbread with Chorizo and red pepper salsa and the waffle with Bacon and maple syrup. Both were delicious but the former was truly outstanding. One of the best breakfasts I've ever had. Service was very good and got a good spot outside in the sun."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "Delicious and stylish place for brunch, but portions were small (and I don't eat a lot). Puddings and iced early grey and hibiscus tea delicious. Service slow and lacking in grace."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "Fantastic brunch - presentation is very good & food tastes even better than it looks! The prawn omelette was particularly good! Great service as well, a definite favourite for brunch!"
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "Food was good and tasty, restaurant was airy and nice decor. some staff were unprofessional and unapproachable, could be good but need to have an attitude bypass!"
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "I had heard a lot of great things about this place, which I suppose raised my expectations. We went here for brunch with friends. The menu is quite healthy and a little quirky. The service was not great. They forgot the tea, to get more drinks we had to go and find someone. It was like they were distracted. It was nice that we were not rushed, but it felt more like we were forgotten. I would come back here as I liked the food but if I got similar service then I would find somewhere else."

  • "One of my favourite places to eat we went here last week to celebrate a birthday and it was exceptional as ever. Decided to opt this time for a couple of the starters as a main to try an few new dishes and they were cooked to perfection. Love the interior and the non-alcoholic cocktails very refreshing on a hot summer's day."

  • "My Partner and I tried The Modern Pantry for the first time on Sunday for brunch. It is in a great location and has outdoor seating which was wonderful as it was a beautiful day so we sat outside and dined. I started off with the smoothie of the day which was banana, yoghurt, fig, mint and lime and was absolutely delicious. I then had the baked eggs which were ok - I wouldn't order it again, once the eggs were gone you were left with a tomato-ey water, the sourdough toast that came with it was delicious. My partner opted for the dippy egg with marmite soldiers which were perfect. Despite not liking my dish I will definintely be going back - the menu is wonderful with so many different things to choose from!"

  • "Very enjoyable evening with friends we hadn't seen for a long time. Staff were very good and menu added that sense fo something different"
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "I was not impressed with my meal at The Modern Pantry, which was a shame having dined there a few times before. The onglet steak was far too tough and lacked flavour. I left most of it!"
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Great setting and atmosphere and a very homely feel. We ordered the sashimi, bread and olives for starters. Sashimi was very tasty, but probably could have been a bit colder. Mains I had the steak, which was cooked with what tasted like an olive tepanade. Very tasty and succulent. The salad had a touch too much vinegar. Husband had the pork belly, which he enjoyed but said wasn't the best he's had. Dessert I had the Pineapple Tarte Tartin, which was really yummy. Overall the food was excellent, but was very pricey. Probably not worth that much for the price, but was good nonetheless."

  • "We visited the Modern Pantry last Sunday for lunch. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The food was delicious and we received exceptional service."
    dined on 06/07/2014
  • "We went for breakfast and after hearing great reviews were thoroughly underwhelmed. Service was slow and impersonal despite there being more than enough staff on for the amount of tables early on a Sunday morning. Lack of interesting vegetarian options and the coffee buff I went with was not impressed by his latte and didn't even chance an espresso. Overpriced for the quality, flavour and portions received ( 1 coffee, 1 ice tea, 2x poached eggs = £30). Overall, disappointed. There are much better breakfast alternatives in London despite having to wait until 10am to be fed on a Sunday."

  • "Excellent service from the time we entered the restaurant. Immediately asked what drinks we wanted and water supplied. Excellent choice of boutique beers. Exciting choice of starters , the marinated prawns in a perfectly cooked omelette were hard to beat, but it was a difficult choice as all the other choices looked delicious. For main course I selected the pork belly , cooked to perfection with tasty Asian style accompaniments . The fusion element was present throughout the menu."

  • "The food was really good but our experience was dulled by a lack of service. After being seated, we were then never approached by a waiter and after 30mins had to ask if we could have our order taken. Then it took another 40 mins for the food to arrive, as a pre created afternoon package I would expect faster service with the food and more attentive staff. I don't feel the service match up with the quality of food."

  • "I made a reservation through Opentable, received confirmation email and got the confirmation phone call from the restaurant the day before. BUT, when we went there for the lunch, there was no table for us. Food was good and all the staff was nice but disappointed that we had to have a seat for walk in table."
    dined on 04/07/2014
  • "I'm a vegetarian and there was only one vegetarian option on the menu which didn't sound too appealing however I ordered it anyway and it turns out it was probably the tastiest meal I've ever had. Well done The Modern Pantry!"

  • "Absolutely great service on this occasion, lovely table outside in the sunshine. Ordered something and didn't like it, and they brought me a new main"
    dined on 03/07/2014
  • "Great lunch the food was superb and we were not rushed to complete our lunchtime meal, my foodie guests from America thought is was a great choice for a business lunch."
    dined on 03/07/2014
  • "Really slow service and the waiter didn't seem too fussed about it when we complained. Food was very good though."
    dined on 02/07/2014
  • "Cold. Overcooked steak, yes really Melted dessert Poor seasoning and spicing (saffron potatoes) Not good at all."
    dined on 01/07/2014
  • "The food was decent, but unfortunately, the service was absolutely terrible. First of all, we had to wait over 30 minutes for our food, and when it was ready, it didn't come out at the same time. There was at least a 5 minute wait in between some of the food that came to the table. We also tried to order extra bread, but we were told that it wasn't possible because the kitchen was so busy. At the table next to ours, we overheard the waiter say that they couldn't even order for 20 minutes because there was such a backlog. If the restaurant had been filled to capacity, this may have been understandable but there were several vacant tables. It really felt like an amateur restaurant."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "I had a breakfast booking for 10.45am and on their website it specifically says we hold tables for 20minutes. Anyhow - me and a bunch of friends got to the place at 10.50 and were told that the kitchen has been closed and no breakfast was going to be served. Kitchen closes at 11am, yet she would not budge! Poor service and definitely would not recommend such a place! Went to Workshop Coffee across the road - brilliant staff and food - would definitely recommend"

  • "Excellent fresh food good choice including some unusual options"
    dined on 25/06/2014
  • "I've eaten before at TMP and had a great meal - creative, interesting, and great surroundings/service. Unfortunately, this meal, whilst eaten in the usual light, bright, airy surroundings which TMP does so well (ideal positioning on that sunny square), I had poached eggs on gluten-free toast, with spinach, tomato and mushrooms with incrediby gritty, and therefore inedible, which I then left. Whilst I could have complained, I decided not to, but was interested to note that the server didn't ask why I'd left the spinach, and if the food had been ok overall, which would have been an ideal opportunity for me to mention the inedible spinach. I will go back, as it's such a great meeting space, but I'll be avoiding any spinach in future!"

  • "My experience on this occasion: service slow Food warm not hot portions small and no advice to have sides dishes Ran out of a condiment took a wine glass away without asking and it still had some wine in it"
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "Really amazing and creative food -- so glad it's a bit of the radar these days, as it's easier to get a reservation within a few weeks' notice. The wine selection is as extraordinary as the food selection. I was still thinking of my meal the day after... one companion said it was the best lamb entree he has ever eaten, and this is a person who has really eaten in the best restaurants worldwide. Ambience is best upstairs."
