Diner Reviews
  • "If you like tasty, imaginative (but not ridiculously so) food, well presented and meticulously prepared, this is the place. Had the lamb and smoked feta starters, the onglet steak and the duck, plus truffles and the toffee ice cream and the crème brulée for dessert. Awesome."

  • "Slow and unwelcoming service for overpriced food. We paid for a 2 course fixed lunch and the only compensation we were offered is desert which we didn't have time for after waiting 1:15 hours for the first course. "

  • "A thoroughly modern food experience to be had at The Modern Pantry. Inventive, seasonal, beautifully prepared food, served by welcoming and informed staff. Helpful wine choices on the menu. I had a particularly delicious piece of ray wing. The surroundings are equally aesthetically pleasing, if a tad austere making the acoustics difficult if the room fills up. It's not cheap, but it is value for money since the effort and attention to detail is very apparent. I've been to breakfast downstairs as well, and it didn't disappoint either."

  • "Casual and amicable atmosphere. The food is truely outstanding. Defintiely worth a visit!"

  • "Brunch on Saturday in a group of 5. We got a nice table by the window and the food was good. However, the service was poor - our hot drink order got lost."

  • "Stunning food, great wine selection (and recommendations), excellent service. The only thing I didn't like was the squeaky door - we sat quite close to it and I think that door shouldn't be used as it's too close to customers (as well as being very noisy). The service does not get 5 stars for 2 reasons, we were offered a dessert menu before receiving our mains. When we did order cheese and port for dessert - we got the drinks then waiting about 15 minutes before I had to remind the waiter about the cheese. I would prefer one person to wait on each table - we seemed to have 3 or 4 over the course of the meal."

  • "Perfect brunch spot! Love the atmosphere in the upstairs dining room and adore the inspired brunch menu!"

  • "Our brunch was lovely. It was served by polite friendly staff who were eager to help. The venue is charming, particularly on a sunny day."

  • "We had a brunch on Saturday at The Modern Pantry and it was excellent. All the dishes we had were very good and we had very good Champagne and wine also. I definitely recommend to try it, just don't go there starving: we waited our food for an hour... Above all, a good experience."

  • "Highly recommended by a friend and we were weren't disappointed. This was a celebration for my husbands birthday and he had a great time. The food and service was faultless. Although I don't normally have a sweet tooth the pineapple tarte tartin was out of this world. Loved the relaxed, buzzy atmosphere. Will definitely be back."

  • "Our visit was a Friday evening and we found the service and atmosphere was good, staff friendly and efficient but not rushed however the food was a little disappointing as the descriptions, which suggested some interesting combinations with quite powerful flavours did not live up to the taste treat we were hoping for. Shame, but I would go again as this type of cooking is right up my street and should be encouraged."

  • "We had to wait for 40 minutes to get our order served, and the chocolate cake was very disappointing."

  • "Unpretentious, honest food, bright, just cosy. Took my mum here for afternoon tea and she was impressed with the creative pastries and the relaxed yet somehow special atmosphere. You even do a green tea latte!"

  • "Really enjoyable evening with friendly staff and great food. Would certainly go back again."

  • "Being resident in Clerkenwell, the Modern Pantry has always been a favourite generally serving excellent food. However it seems the 'excellent food' stops at brunch time, and the dinner menu is somewhat of a disappointment. Everything on the menu was cooked in garlic (black garlic, wild garlic, garlic relish...) and the vegetarian options were really really poor. I took my mum for a mothers day treat (she's a vegetarian and, like me, not a fan of everything tasting of garlic) and the menu really disappointed. Would go back for brunch, but given the choice of fantastic dinner venues in Clerkenwell, I think Modern Pantry really missed the mark with its dinner menu."

  • "Had a really nice Saturday night dinner with friends, but the service was diabolical. Are friends were a little late, and by the time we finished (11.30) we were the only people left upstairs, so the atmosphere was limited. Really great food, even though all the cod was gone by the time we ordered 4, leaving some of us having second starters for main course. Nonetheless, would still go back."

  • "Excellent food , great building , nice area to go to on a weekend-quite quiet/relaxed . Good service-staff v attentive.most impressed by quality of the food and loved the non-traditionalness of the afternoon tea was so refreshing to try flavors I had never tried before. Loved the cutlery as well. I was v v impressed by the restuarant-it was my first time going, and I would definately come back. The value was good too- felt like Michelin food but at not such a High price"

  • "Have been looking forward to going here for awhile. Service was poor, food was very underwhelming and it was over priced. Have heard many good things, but in recent months there have been mixed reviews. Very disappointed & think we were just very unlucky. Will not return."

  • "Fantastic food for a Saturday brunch, not as expensive as anticipated and service was attentive but not over the top. Definitely recommend to friends and hope to be back for dinner."

  • "The food was out of this world, taste, presentation were both slot on. Being a descendant of the Providore in Maryleobkne the menu was an eclectic mix of ingredients with a old sprinkling of the unusual. The good for me was miles ahead though and every bite was a delight. Drinks menu was also top notch both for wines, spirits and cocktails. Service was friendly and efficient, though we went on a Sunday night and occasionally and especially towards the end we felt a little ignored. The food isn't cheap and the portion sizes are smallish on some of the dishes and the value would be the only thing that let's the place down. Definitely with at least one visit."

  • "We had dinner on Sat PM. The overall dining experience was disappointing. Service was attentive but overly so - it felt rushed. The food didn't live up to the reviews. Salmon Sashimi starter was delicious but things went down hill from there. The duck main was a strange combination of flavours - paprika on the duck breast completely overpowered the meat, as did the curry flavouring on the dauphinoise potatoes. Dessert was the worst course- the pastry of the blood orange tart was half a cm thick and rock hard. It was impossible to cut with a fork. The filling was also ice cold. I abandoned the dessert after a few mouthfuls. I provided feedback to the waitress on the dessert & was disappointed to note that she didn't remove it from the bill."

  • "Lovely location and friendly staff make this Clerkenwell spot a popular place to brunch. The menu is fusion inspired such as chilli prawn omelette with sambas but also has stalwarts such as pancakes, smoked salmon etc. would recommend on a sunny day as the room is light and airy and there is seating outside in the square. Booking for brunch is required."

  • "We had afternoon tea on a very busy Saturday. Overall it was a good experience and good value for money when compared with other central London afternoon teas. It's a lovely setting and the service is not too stuffy or formal which I prefer but it suited our special occasion. It was very busy and therefore it seemed as though our cakes and sandwiches had been sitting around a little too long as some of the cream was melting a little and jam was dripping through to the savouries below..but a minor thing as it still tasted good. Would have appreciated more tea though, maybe a pot of hot water but maybe that's a personal thing. Would definitely recommend for taking friends or Mum for a reasonable tea that's refreshingly different."

  • "This place never lets me down. The food is brilliant. I have been for both brunch and lunch and have always enjoyed my food. I think the menu is inventive and exciting. I like that the menu is different every time I visit. I highly recommend."

  • "We stayed in London only for a short time but managed to go to an afternoon tea here. It was really good although probably more expensive than in other locations. The food looked and tasted amazing! The service was friendly and helpful. We would fully recommend this location for a relaxed tea."

  • "I think over the period of last three years I gave this place numerous chances to show itself in a better light but it always (and I can't stress the word always more) it failed. I can count 6 times visiting this "restaurant"(once as it was my wish, 5 times being asked to go by someone else). No proper food here (sorry, but overpriced sandwiches and scrambled eggs that anyone can do is not way to go). This place always delivered overcooked or undercooked food. Never good food. On two occasions their sides were unrecognisable and tasteless. No attention to detail. They try to blend tastes but they fail miserably. Ambience is very poncy middle-class, lets eat at the Pottery Barn type. Noise, noise, noise! Good luck having a conversation.Fail!!"

  • "Went to The Modern Pantry for brunch after wanting to go and try it out for ages... and it did not disappoint! The decor is in pale greys and white, giving a modern yet softly muted ambience that lends itself perfectly to a Sunday brunch in a spacious setting. I had the matcha latte - this was one of the best ones I've had in London as I could tell real matcha powder was used (it's surprisingly hard to find in London!) and not sparingly. I also had the prawn omelette - the flavours of the omelette were amazing, I just wish it was larger so I could have had more to savour (the large dish made it look very small unfortunately); the bread that came with it was a bit on the harder side though. Overall, a delicious brunch. =)"

  • "The reviews were really good but frankly we were unimpressed. The service was painfully slow even although the restaurant was almost empty at 10.30-11am in the morning. When our brunch eventually arrived it was small portions for the price charged. My wife's egg benedict was not well seasoned and the muffin base was burnt. The cappuccinos were small. I can only imagine that the normal chef was off work. This was the cooking by an amateur. I will not be hurrying back or recommending it!!!"

  • "Nice food with an interesting combination of flavours, but the size of the portions was very measly for comparatively high price ( £20 for main ). I can understand the main part of the dish being modest, but when the accompanying vegetables are spare ( two small cabbage leaves accompanied my main ) I despair. Such restaurant antics really put me off a place and although I was hungry enough for a dessert, the artily placed morsels I saw at the adjoining tables made me decline what I'm sure would have been a delicious tasting mouthful."

  • "The location and Georgian building are amazing, we had muffins with scrambled eggs/ poached eggs and smoked bacon. The bacon was the star, really tasty and salty, the scrambled egg was a little over cooked and the toasted muffins very tough to cut. Lovely intense coffee and sharp pink grapefruit juice. Pleasant enough service, however my request was treated rather coolly when I asked to swap poached for scrambled eggs, though granted. Not as good as our first visit for coffee and a pastry. We will try afternoon tea at the Modern Pantry next time."

  • "Have been several times before and really enjoyed the menu, ambiance and friendly service. But it has 'gone off'. 'Laid-back' is the generous way to describe the service – while friendly and efficient when it was around, there were stretches when it was entirely absent, despite the room not being busy enough to stretch the two waitresses assigned to our area. Food was good, but generally lukewarm. Fine the kitchen's are downstairs, but it felt like everything had sat on the pass a little too long before being sent out. No stand-out dishes. Overall, we had a nice evening, but that was down to the company and the good mood we brought with us. If we'd had a bad day, not sure things would have improved by the Modern Pantry experience."
    dined on 25/02/2014
  • "My only issue were that the portions were a little small on some dishes."

  • "I've been to The Modern Pantry a number of times and have always enjoyed the food and the drinks. Service has always been OK, but nothing special. Unfortunately on my latest visit service took a turn for the worse - with a snobby head waiter seemingly reluctantly taking us to our (booked) table and reminding us of out time limit a number of times. Maybe I don't look like the kind of clientele welcomed at The Modern Pantry? The rest of the service was probably OK to be honest, though the tone of the meal had been set and we were eager to leave."
