Diner Reviews
  • "We were a group of 5, which included 1 vegetarian and 1 gluten free, this was not a problem. Gluten free bread was provided for our gluten free lady and from then all gluten free options on the menu were pointed out to her so that she knew which meals were suitable for her without having to ask. Even her coffee arrived with a chocolate truffle rather than a cookie without any intervention from us. It is the level of service I have come to expect from this restaurant and their staff."

  • "The Plough at Bolnhurst is truly a pleasure to visit. It doesn't matter if you're popping in for a lunch, a quick drink or a leisurely meal. The service and the food is always a joy"

  • "We have, once again, been impressed by the standard of food and the quality of service at The Plough. Well done! Keep it up."

  • "Friendly atmosphere, good food, good service, ideal for most occasions"

  • "Whilst we enjoyed the food, we found the whole experience rather frenetic - admittedly we should have asked to be moved from the noisy table next to the service station and toilet but we also found that the service was disjointed with too many people involved in serving us. And were very disappointed to be served cold red wine . For a restaurant with a high reputation, this was inexcusable. We were looking forward to having a leisurely evening dinner but we felt very rushed.."

  • "Our table was in the lovely wood-beamed conservatory and, this time, we chose from the fixed price blackboard menu. We both had the Fowey Mussels starter which was beautifully cooked and seasoned. I had the Aberdeenshire Rib Flank which was slow-cooked to perfection. My wife had Lambs liver which she throughly enjoyed. She was too full for desert but I had the Chocolate Marquis with orange confit and my only complaint was that I could have eaten more of it! All this plus drinks and coffee came to just over £52. Excellent value for a superb meal. We eat here regularly and have never been disappointed."

  • "We chose from the 'specials board', 2 courses for £16.00. This is excellent value and the dishes were superb. I had broad bean risotto and my friend had the cod with spinach - we finished every scrap. Puddings were lovely too. Very highly recommended."

  • "Food was excellent and they advise on what was gluten free and provided gluten free bread"

  • "an interesting foodie menu , good atmosphere , and attentive service, fairly pricy at £100 ( including tip) for 2"

  • "An ideal place to linger over a birthday lunch. The 3 of us were unanimous that the food was excellent in choices, taste & presentation, extensive wine list with good descriptions, v. friendly service. Not a place to go to if in a hurry, all the food is freshly cooked - tasty fresh cooked bread to dip in good olive oil a nice welcome touch. The staff work well as a team, they clearly enjoy their jobs."

  • "The restaurant were so helpful. I mentioned when I booked that I only eat chicken, and whilst it was not on the menu, they sourced a beautiful chicken dish for me. My partner had scallops for starter and lobster for his main - all of the food was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was excellent - the staff are always on hand and there were no long delays between dishes. My only gripe is that you have to order sides to go with the dishes."

  • "We were really looking forward to this as a special night out due to the kids being away. Although the service was friendly, everything felt really rushed. The whole meal was done within 50 mins! The food was fine, but the overall experience doesn't come close to the likes of The Black Horse at Ireland... For around the same money."

  • "Went to The Plough with 5 friends, to celebrate 2 birthday's, the service was excellent from the moment we arrived, although it was very busy we were not kept waiting at all - all the staff were very attentive, the food was excellent, 3 of the party had steak which they really enjoyed, I had Lobster which was really good especially the Lobster Butter, having only been before for Sunday Lunch (which is always good) we could not fault the Saturday evening menu. All in all a good time was had by all - Thanks to all the staff at The Plough."

  • "since our last visit to the Plough, and it was the same excellent dining experience. It is pricey, so best saved for special occasions, but it is very good quality food in very pleasant surroundings. Staff as helpful and friendly as ever too."

  • "As gastro pubs go this venue is a little better. I love fine dining and this place was better a few years back. Maybe too safe a menu but many older diners enjoying the dining experience!"

  • "It had been a few years since i last had dinner at the Plough, I took my wife and parents who had not been before. It was as good as ever, great food, service and ambience. Looking forward to my next visit!"

  • "We recently celebrated my husbands birthday at the Plough, following at least 3 previous visits.....as always the food was extremely good with a nicely balanced menu. The service was efficient, despite a little next up over special dietary requirements, over which genuine concern was expressed by the staff. The atmosphere was warm and convivial."
    dined on 12/06/2014
  • "Recommended to us for somewhere a bit special, The Plough at Bolnhurst certainly lived up to our expectations. Service was friendly and informal but efficient, and made the excellent meal a very enjoyable experience; the steaks especially were top quality. We felt well looked after and satisfied. It was a more expensive place than we would usually use, so we wouldn't go very often, but for a special occasion it was really good."
    dined on 10/06/2014
  • "Great tasting food but small portions. The menu is small but updated regularly using seasonal ingredients. Some of the dishes lack presentational flair ..ie steak served on a bare plate with no garnish! Service is impeccable, nothing is too much trouble!"

  • "I needed someware a bit different to take my partner for her birthday, the plough at Bolnhurst was recommended to me by a work colleague. I made the booking on line, chose the day and time and any special food requirements were noted, all very simple and straightforward. I enjoyed the friendly service we received, the food was cooked and presented to a high standard. When making the booking I had mentioned it was my partners birthday, as a nice little touch the desert came complete with candle and happy birthday piped in chocolate around the plate which just goes to show they do read any notes you make on booking. All in all an enjoyable evening no hesitation in recommending."

  • "Warm welcome here and we were able to enjoy the garden pre- dinner. Menu was varied but extremely overpriced both for starters and mains. So ? value for money!! We ate in the conservatory annex and I'm sure the whole restaurant could hear the chef shouting "service please" as meals were ready to go to tables! When dining out on a Saturday we expect to be out for the evening and have a nice relaxed meal (especially at these prices) however I think maybe this place likes to re set tables because our main courses came very soon after the starter plates had been cleared! So we felt rushed. Unfortunately we shall not be back in a hurry. "

  • "My birthday treat & to try somewhere different (The last time I visited this pub, was about 30 yrs ago, and when it was named the pink plough) The food was very good, although the numerous waiters and waitresses seemed to fuss around all the time, as if the table might be double booked. The one thing it does lack is a good atmosphere ! Overall a lovely meal in a somewhat somber ambience (possibly some easy listening background music may sort this). Great for a special occasion, but save up those pennies."
    dined on 06/06/2014
  • "The options were broad but on some the servings should have been bigger (the gnocci and the strawberries for examples - both cheap to have given twice the serving)."

  • "Great food as ever, lovely staff and very comfortable and tasteful surroundings."

  • "We booked The Plough for a family occasion. It catered for all of our different tastes with an excellent selection and variety of courses. The service was efficient and friendly. The sun came out so we could finish our meal on the terrace; a real added bonus.. "

  • "Extremely friendly and efficient without stuffiness."

  • "A very special occasion - our 40th wedding anniversary so that's why we chose to visit this lovely restaurant which is renowned for its excellent food. I suppose lots of people do the same but it would have been nice to have acknowledgement of the significance of the booking, even just a congratulations. Asparagus cooked to perfection, smoked salmon fresh. Hubby's cod/chips much enjoyed & in retrospect I should have asked for a couple of minutes more heat on the duck as it was slightly underdone for my taste. Hubby's cheeseboard generous & offered tasty selection of British/Irish cheese. My apricot hadn't been poached in wine, that & the icecream proved a very sweet dessert which would have benefited from a slightly thinner biscuit."
    dined on 31/05/2014
  • "We had a lovely anniversary lunch here. Service was faultless and food very good. Would have preferred a thicker cut of rib eye and the raspberry and almond tart to have a stronger almond flavour but these really are minor quibbles and we will definitely be going back. "

  • "After being recommended The Plough as a good country pub/restaurant where to take our visiting overseas guests, we were delighted with the setting of the building in pretty landscaped surroundings and the interior is very welcoming. All the staff were very attentive & we were swiftly shown to our pre-booked table. The menu was varied and the food was delicious, although it is pricey. A good place to go with a group, or as a couple for a romantic meal. "

  • "We went for a 3 course lunch. My starter was delicious but my wife's chicken liver starter was undercooked to the extent of rawness. Her main course of duck was much better, however my own choice of rib eye steak with fries and mushrooms was a disaster. Rib eye is supposed to have plenty of marbling but mine was served with large globules of gelatinous fat and all too little real meat. The fries were past their best, greasy and limp. When we mentioned to the waiter that the steak was rather fatty, his response was that rib eye was supposed to be like that, so 75% went uneaten. Desserts were very nice and the service is good, but the restaurant was let down by some poor food that should not have found its way out of the kitchen. "

  • "Travelled for two hours for dinner at the plough and nearly missed it,,, could do with a better sign on the road as i nearly gave up... lovely place but the smell of fish hits you straight away as the kitchen is open,,, an extractor fan would be an idea as i hate fish. dinner was ok but small portion and no carbs,, i had the pork wich was yummy but no potatoes?? some boiled spuds would have been nice.... bread and oils needs to have more choice, a few slices of brown bread and olive oil is not sufficient,,,... it was ok but wouldnt go back..."
    dined on 29/05/2014
  • "We wish the Plough was nearer our home, however it's a great half way venue to meet up with friends from other parts of the country. This was our fifth visit and the seasonal varied menu of well prepared quality ingredients never disappoints. Service is efficient, intelligent and discreet. Brilliant."
    dined on 28/05/2014
  • "We booked this late and although we had been several times before we still very much enjoyed the experience. All for of us were in celebration mood but the staff were brilliant. Good to stand at the bar for a drink as the view into the kitchen allowed us to see the food being prepared and what the finished meals looked like. The food was superb and plenty of it and the staff were very attentive but only when you needed them. Our table was one of the last bookings but we never felt rushed despite not leaving until midnight. Both couples had a great night and we would recommend The Plough at Bolnhurst to anyone. Many thanks for looking after us."

  • "We were celebrating a significant birthday and this was a great way to do so. Very good food in a lovely restaurant and fizzy drinks served at the right temperature. We will visit again. "

  • "A lovely converted barn/conservatory dining area with doors opening onto a well looked after garden with a pond. The ambience of the restaurant area was lovely and staff couldn't have been more attentive. As soon as we were seated, staff brought to us a bottle of champagne in a cooler that stood adjacent to the table - I hate tables being overcrowded with bottles and glasses. The food was splendid, good honest cooking, not pretentious, but hearty and tasteful. Not quite fine dining but it was most agreeable. I'm not one for deserts so looked instantly for a cheese board which didn't disappoint. A choice of 3, French, Italian or English with quince or chutneys also. Worth a visit!"

  • "My husband had the steak and it was cooked to perfection. I had the lamb and this was lovely. My daughter had the chicken pie which she found just enough without being over full. Price worth it for the food, service and ambience."

  • "Wish it was actually more local (it's about 40 minutes drive), then we would go more often. Every time we go to the Plough we are always delighted with the food and the friendly efficient service. The Plough is still the village pub and it has been carefully restored and maintained to reflect this whilst offering a superb dining experience as well."
