I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. We had been recommended the restaurant and we're excited at the prospect of great steak. Unfortunately my steak was over cooked as were the vegetables. I was disappointed with presentation of the vegetables in what appeared to be desert bowls. The desert Eton mess myself and my boyfriend had, was very disappointing very small and like a purée. Otherwise service was good, the restaurant was very welcoming and explained clearly how to use our taste cards which with these made it a reasonably priced meal, had we not had these I feel the meal would have been over priced. I must say the restaurant was very accommodating and helpful as I had to change the size of the table at the last minute.

A let down from the beginning, looks like a rundown pub from the outside and not much better inside. Was expecting it to be a smart place so dressed up but people were wearing hoodies and trainers. The menu was a tatty bit of paper and there was only two waitresses for the whole restaurant on a Saturday night. The food was presented poorly and looked like I could of made it. The steak was ok but you have to pay for anything to go with it. Very average I will stick with miller and carter.

After hearing the radio ads and being a steak addict we thought it time to visit the rare cow, got that so wrong. When you first walk in the restaurant looks very contemporary after that it all went down hill, the steak was nice but the overall meal including presentation was poor. The desert was burning hot on the outside and cold in the middle. The service is poor and the staff don't appear to trained. The icing on the cake was the £200 bill!!! So if your eating out in Writtle don't go to the rare cow, save your money.

Atrocious service. We went for their steak mondays but it was awful. We had to go up ourselves to try to find staff members as they hid away from their guests, just to order more water. This happened on 4 occasions, they gave us a tiny bowl of chips for 4 people so again we had to try to find someone that could go and get us more chips. When we asked them for something they acted suprised and bothered, as if they weren't supposed to be there to provide us with our food. The restaurant was quite empty and even though they just had steak & chips to offer their guests it took them ages to bring out the food, even something simple as ketchup took 10min to get.The food was good the first round but got worse. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go.

We booked this restaurant for my son's 30th Birthday. Since he is a lover of steak, we thought this would be prefect!! Eventhough the food we had was lovely,I cannot really fault it, the menu was lacking. You had a choice of chipped potatoes and that was it.There was no side salad, although they did attempt to accommodate us with a green salad. Upon ordering desserts, we were told that there was no ice cream due to the freezer breaking at the weekend (it was now Wednesday)! All desserts either come with ice cream or are ice based. My son also wanted to do the ice cream challenge!! So it was no desserts for us and made the evening go a flat. All in all, we thought it was over-priced for what we got and wish we were elsewhere.

This group restaurant was featured on "The Only Way is Essex", so one of our party from Kent requested we book it. On arrival the outside of the building seemed rather drab but on entry the door opened up into a modern well presented dining area. Although where we sat was a bit of a squeeze when taking into account the proximity of the table immediately behind us. The waitressing was generally good although the big bomb shell was that all three elements of the menu lacked substance. Many of the menu choices were not available that included all fish based choices other than the lobster burger..Even the ice cream on the desert menu WAS NOT AVAILABLE which was a bit of a shocker.

Was very disappointed in all aspects, from value to ambience, staff and even decor. Price is astonishing for what is essentially poor pub grub. Such a shame, it could be amazing but would need a complete make over and change of staff. Staff could not be bothered and were not knowledgable about the menu.

Yeah, it's pricey, but the quality of food more than makes up for it. Had a fillet steak and it was one of the best I've tasted. Good choice of starters and sides. Service was a little lacklustre, but I don't go to a restaurant to be entertained. Cost £60 for two of us, and we were both full. Not an every-week kind of place, but great for special occasions / treats.

The food tasted great, however the service was very slow, we had to wait along time for the food, and when the food came out we got half our meal and then had to wait 5 minutes for the other half. Waiter was not enthusiastic and didn't reccommend or upsell us anything. There was a fly bothering us the whole time we were there.

I've been to the rare cow in writtle a few times before and many of times we have the same problems with the restaurant! The first is the slow response of all the waiters and waitresses who seem to spend their time talking behind the bar instead of serving! Secondly, the food came up in stages! I had eaten my steak before the chips even came up! Finally the lack of effort when we left the restaurant was not surprising as no one had the curtesy to say goodbye or anything! It's a shame the food is so good but that will be the last time I visit this restaurant!

Me and a friend went last monday for the advertised "Steakfest" upon arrival was taken through to a table around the corner where one of the on duty waitresses was sitting down chatting, drinking and eating with a couple on the table over from us, im guessing she knew them rather well and im not against relaxed staff but considering it took a good 20 minutes to get a starter and 10 for a drink wasnt a great first impresssion. luckily the food here was amazing, the steak is phenomonal despite the lack of sauces for the steak but very let down on the wait times and service, hopefully the service picks up because i really enjoyed the food!

8pm Friday 16th August Ran out of fillet steaks, surprising for a steakhouse, my rump steak came out cold to touch, asked for a redo and got a super super rare replacment ?(asked for rare to be fair) but couldnt eat alot of it. all meals came out separately, poor service, chicken escalopes not avaliable after ordering. super expenses and simply not worth the money - avoid.

Been meaning to go here for a long time and we was not disappointed, although the restaurant was quite when we arrived we were seen to and served quickly and was given a nice amount of time to chose our food. The food arrived quickly and cooked to perfection. A very enjoyable eating experience. Once the restaurant got busier the service did not drop and we were seen to efficiently. We was very impressed with the overall experience even though I was impressed with the quality of the food in my mind it was just a bit overpriced (even so well worth it)

A small party of six people (none of which had been before) went for the Monday evening steakfest. After reading some reviews about service etc. I was a little apprehensive, however I have to say that the service was excellent, the drinks (wine, beer and soft drinks) were included in the price and the waitress was always attentive asking if you required a top up. The steak was cooked beautifully as we're the chips and onion rings and like the drinks there was an endless supply. On the whole everyone in our party had a lovely experience and would definitely return.

Arrived to find we were the only people there. Service exceptionally slow although staff are polite. Ordered food only to be told that several items were not available , changed some dishes only to be advised quite a bit later that some of the 2nd choices were also not available. Starters quite basic but took 45 mins to arrive. Food wasn't bad but just about warm rather than hot. It seems the place is trying to be something its not !!

Food was good, Ribeye was excellent. Calamari for starters was in a puddle of oil on the plate, needs draining on blue cloth before serving. Really nice looking restaurant, but service was poor. Waiting staff very young and poorly trained. Didn't know what draught lagers were available or bottled ciders. Had to go back to the bar twice to ask. Also asked by three different waiters if we wanted to see the dessert menu. Would definitely return for the steak, but service needs to improve

Surprised with the decor inside, not what we were expecting as when you first arrive you think you are about to walk into a saw-dust pub. It is actually very nice, quite contemporary and comfortable, we were quite impressed. After waiting 40 minutes we were told that our food would be a further 5 minutes! Chateaubriand looked like a large fillet steak, cut into 6 slivers. Cooked nicely, but completely tasteless. Service was terrible. We had an issue with waiting for drinks and them not having the drinks we asked for due to "issues"! Really, on a Friday night. Will we go back...unlikely. Steak from our local pub have more taste!

The first time, The rare cow was amazing, everyone loved it & it became our new favourite place. The second time, food was still unbelievable but took longer to come. This time was BAD...we had a table under a speaker which was turned back up whenever we requested it was turned down. The menu has become MORE expensive, the drinks were the same price but tiny! Coke was in what resembled a shot glass, warm but charged at £3ish. There was a BBQ out the back so we were told some items weren't available on the main menu. Turns out to be about 15 of them causing 3 of the 4 of us to change our order. It took 20 mins to pay as the machine had no signal and the waiter had to keep walking off. Price has gone up, everything else has gone down! Shame.

Sunday BBQ was ok, I felt food was nice, but no chips or any form of potato at our time if booking had to ask 3 times for a drink which I felt was bad when I saw people get there drinks served to them as soon as the waiters went over ! The BBQ is in the garden only and there is hardly any shaded area which made dinner not very nice with 2 small children, and what little shade there was, was taken by other people who had been there most the day . I would go again but for an evening meal as the menu sounds lovely. I would never go to the Sunday BBQ, first of all I thought it was a bargain at £20 ( with voucher) but once got there I feel it was very expensive for the lack of food being served .

The food is really nice, the steak was cooked perfectly and the sides are lovely, particularly the chips (really crunchy and soft and defintiley not oven cooke ready made!!) The one thing that lets the restaurant down is the service. Our drinks were forgotten, our wine only arrived after 20 mins with prompting, the waitress didn't update us on what was unavailable so we ordered and were only told after 15 mins that our order had run out and had to be changed, our dessert didn't turn up after 20 mins waiting so we had to leave without having it. Its a shame, because the place is really nice, the food was fantastic (although obviously I can't comment on the dessert!), and the staff are really friendly. They just need better organisation.

Good food. Steak was excellent. Starter was fantastic. Chef came out to explain about the rib - eye in - bone and was top notch. BUT it was extremely slow. I don't mind waiting 15-30 minutes but over 1h00 from finishing starter to getting our steaks was just too much. They were reasonably busy but not manic. Several times had to flag a waitron after no attention. Top food but when you pay top price ( 2 people, £170, and not ridiculous drinking) then you expect top service

We had a nice family group meal on one of the steak fest nights. The food was very tasty and the steak was very nice. The house red wine was very good. The staff were pleasant and they telephoned on the day to offer an earlier table than our late evening booking which was much appreciated. The only let down is that we were not offered a dessert at all.
