  • "Food Is very good. I would recommend to fiends. But I would say to them food is good, done out quite nice service is not good serving across you etc & be prepared to serve your own wine but worth a try."

  • "They didn't have a few things that were on the menu. The staff didn't seem to know what they did and didn't have. The table we had was very close to another one."
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "Food was good, lacked atmosphere, waiter shouldn't call the ladies darling all the time. Not sure if I would return to Writtle, but am invited with friends to eat at The Rare Cow in Earls Colne in May so will give it a second chance."
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "Food was acceptable but not spectacular, especially considering it's a steak place, and we ordered steak and chips, shouldn't be that hard to get right in a place like that. Steak wasn't as tasty as I've had in restaurants that don't focus on... steak. Chips supposed to be triple cooked but were soft and soggy - same for the watery onion rings. Mushrooms were good but the token piece of lettuce and raw tomato was poor effort - less embarassing to omit that kind of thing if you're not going to do it properly. Service dodgy - weren't given a menu for ages. Waiter didn't know what was going on e.g. the house brew was available (and tastier) whereas he told us there was only fosters. When asked about the pink salt, he told us it was pink dye..."

  • "We had a lovely meal here. The only thing that puts me off going back was the restaurant. It's a little strange, not very modern, but also no character. Steak was ok, not the best I've eaten. Worth a try, although don't think we will rush back."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "Two starters ordered 1 served second took further 20 mins to arrive - steaks had obviously been prepared and held to resolve the starter issue. Overall service not good - needs to decide whether a fine dining establishment as suggested by prices or fast food outlet in which case over priced"

  • "Visited the Writtle restuarant on Thursday for my birthday, had the Holly cow burger, but didnt have it as a challenge, well worth the money, and wow was it amazing. My wife had the normal burger and that was just as nice, well worth the money. had a very enjoyable evening , will go again very soon :)"

  • "The good bit first, the starters and steaks were very good. In fact the steak had a different taste to the steaks we usually have and were excellent. But the service was simply appalling. From the first visit by the waitress to the final bill we were let down by inattentive, unprofessional waiting staff who had a couldn’t care less attitude. They may have been busy but that is no excuse for not doing their job properly once they arrived at our table. I won’t go through all the problems but after an hour of sitting at the table we had only eaten our starter. At the end of the meal after waiting 15 minutes for the bill we had to go to the reception to get it as the waiter admitted he had forgotten."
    dined on 03/04/2014
  • "Service was slow, the starters were nice and hot. The main was freezing cold and the steak was dried out on top but nicely cooked it had been hanging around I believe waiting for the chips which were piping hot, when we tried to pay thier card machine wasn't working , oh didn't we tell you? My young son had to hand over his few pounds pocket money to help with the bill, they will contact us for the rest of the bill!,, not a good experience."
    dined on 02/04/2014
  • "We all had amazing food served to us at the Rare Cow - the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the waiter was too chatty and didn't really get the hint to just serve the food and leave our table!! It was a special occasion for us and wanted to chat and catch up with each other and we were not really able to do this as the waiter was bumbling his life story to us!!!"
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "We were suprised when we arrived at the Rare Cow as the outside view was not what we were expecting. However once inside the deco was modern and comfortable. The steak was outstanding and cooked to perfection. Although the staff were friendly they were not particularly attentive. I had to ask three times for a lemonade and we had to wait and attact someones attention to request some mustard. We had four different members of staff serving us, maybe they should consider allocating specific staff to specific tables."

  • "The food was fantastic. The scallops starter was particularly impressive. Overall, the food was definitely worth the slightly hefty price tag, but this wasn't a problem for us thanks to the Groupon voucher used. The seats we sat on were a touch hard and we were in there for 3 hours thanks to the time waited between courses. Despite this, the food was worth the wait and the general ambience was very pleasant. I wouldn't go here if you're in a rush though."

  • "Our third visit to the Rare Cow in Writtle - never disappointed - meal, service and atmosphere were excellent. We had a lovely evening - THAN YOU"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "the young man who served us couldn't have been more helpful but he desperately needs proper training, he was too effusive, continually asking "how was our meal" interrupting our conversation. I don't think even the manager there knows how to run an upmarket eatery, Pop music played too loud, but they were happy to turn it down when asked, needs mood music played softly. Food was excellent steaks superb, cooked correctly, would go again"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "I booked this restaurant for Mother's Day and it was oustanding; the food was incredible and the staff were lovely. One of my top 3 fillet steaks ever. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "steak is a must it was superb, portions were just right. one of our party had the fish and it was cooked to perfection the batter was so light, and crispy. prices were just about right you do really get value for your money. restaurant was clean bright and pleasantly decorated. would recommend it to any one who likes good."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Very slow service and ran out of sol beer at 8pm and items also not available. Only offered instant coffee at 11pm!!!!"
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Food was very good, it took over an hour to get our starters but when we highlighted the wait they gave us a free round of drinks. Their service is not usually so slow so we were happy that they recognised that something had gone wrong"
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "The restaurant was recommended by friends and the food did not disappoint, with the steak being one of the best i've ever eaten. The downside was our table was poorly located which meant that my wife and I had to keep adjusting our seats for waiters to get past with other tables orders, and at one stage, whilst eating our mains a replacement chair was passed over my head! This won't stop us going back as the food was top notch, but did cost the waiters a standard tip."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "We enjoyed our meal. Fish was delicious, chips looked overcooked as they were quite dark but not so, they were good."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Very disappointing. Steaks were not cooked as requested. Service awful. Waited for ages for drinks, had no cutlery on the table. Had to constantly remind staff on what we were waiting for. All the food was bland. Would not come back."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "We recently went on a Sunday afternoon for the steakfest, the staff were really friendly and helpful and the steak was fantastic. I would happily recommend this restaurant to a friend and can't wait to go back and try the Chefs table."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Steaks were excellent, service not so. Overpriced. The waiter was new and not trained properly, thus he should have had someone watch him for his progress and ultimately the customers satisfaction. He did try hard and was polite which is good and I think he will do well in the future. Food is overpriced though; over £32 for a prime rib steak, a side with pepper sauce (which was not very peppery or nice) - £10 too much. Starters - £6.90 for shrivelled up Calamari? The honey baby sausages were good and priced right at £4.50. And then there was the overly warm red wine that was served in an ice bucket. Finally as we left we had to get our own coats from behind reception and show ourselves out."
    dined on 05/03/2014
  • "The restaurant was cosy and comfortable, and the service was excellent. The steak was cooked to perfection and there was a great choice on the menu. The side orders were delicious and obviously made on site and not bought in. For such a gourmet dinner the price was reasonable, not too expensive but not underselling itself. All in all a great evening."
    dined on 26/02/2014
  • "Went along for my 18th! Alan was a very attentive host and made he experience a great one! The food was gorgeous too"
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "I went for a romantic wedding anniversary dinner with my husband to celebrate 24 years together. The food was fantastic, setting was fantastic, staff were fantastic and it was fantastic value for money. What more can you ask for on a night out? Can't wait to go back for another visit."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "We went on the steak fest Sunday. The food was good but the service could have been better. The steak and the sides were coming out 15 minutes apart and getting someone to take a drink order was a challenge. When its all you can eat and drink it comes across badly when you struggle to place a drink order."
    dined on 23/02/2014
  • "After reading good thngs about this restaurant we booked to go with two friend on Saturday night. From the off I was not impressed with the delay with service. The seating was very low quality with two diners sitting on a bench seat with such poor upholstery that they wooden base could be felt, this resulted in two diners being seated lower on one side of the table. The table was too high for seating meaning that the prawn cocktail being served in very high glass was impossible to eat, my friend's wife resorting to scooping it out onto the plate to make things easier. The delay after starters was far too long, we got a free round of drinks. Two steaks were ok but two were below par, very tough and fatty. Desert was ok. All in all not good."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Once again the steak was wonderful. Full of flavor and cooked to perfection. Thank you"
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "We went in a group of 4 for dinner,we were seated in a corner table which was slightly out of the way but suited us perfectly. Starters were all a success;tiger prawn cocktail & honey&mustard sausages. For mains 3 of us had steak and were all v.happy (the portions were huge) my only negative was that they didn't have a red wine or mushroom sauce to accompany the steak. The other main was sea bass&it was very nice. We also ordered some delicious sides, the best was the mac&cheese. We shared a huge dessert between the four of us&still left a lot as we were so full already! There was a group at the chef's table&I think thats best if you are looking for more atmosphere, however the 4 of us had a wonderful evening with great food and drink."

  • "I went to the rare cow in august for my birthday and was really impressed, the staff were polite, the chef knew what he was doing, and the food was outstanding. This time was a bit of a disappointment to be honest, our table was booked for 7pm, and we were back in the centre of chelmsford drinking in a pub at 8.15, to say we felt rushed would be very accurate, I ordered my steak to be medium rare (the recommended way on the menu) but it was more 'well done' I would have said something but we were not asked how our meal was and because we were sat in a little offset area we could not get staffs attention for anything, we only had one drink through our meal as we could not order any more. I did not feel welcome this time and was put off."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "We had been looking forward to trying the Rare Cow, but we were very disappointed. When we arrived at the restaurant we were greeted and shown to a table. We were asked if we liked the table offered, when we said no, we were told that was it anyway. The wine menu had a poorly over priced selection and the waitress had no idea how to look after it. The atmosphere was appalling not helped by having a table near to the bar where all the staff gathered. The starter was okay, but the main course was over cooked and poorly presented. The night for two people for over £110 was very poor value indeed. I will not be going back and more importantly telling people to avoid the place. The service and food were poor - the whole experience was poor!"

  • "We tried The Rare Cow for my birthday treat, after having a horrible table just inside the door that was freezing every time someone came in we didn't feel part of the restaurant because you couldn't see any of it. The food! Well the Side's came a good ten minutes before the steak so we had nearly finished them by that time, the steak alough very tasty was nearly cold by the time it was dished up, we would rather have waited another 15-20 minutes and had our food all together. The service was very slow I had to ask three times for a steak knife and twice for some side order to come. I believe that if you advertise that your the best steak restaurant in the area you should deliver the best. We will not be back."
    dined on 09/02/2014
  • "Food and service were very good as usual, but because there were a couple of large groups in it was really noisy."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "I went here for the first time for my anniversary and had the best evening. The staff were so friendly, the food was incredible (we had the hot plate starter and fillet and t bone steaks) and the overall atmosphere was great. We had the added bonus of having a taste card which really made this night excellent value for money. However, even without the card i would say the prices charged are reasonable considering the quality of the food and the quantity you get is fantastic. Cant wait to go again!"

  • "Food was delicious, worth the wait. However the ambience could be improved."
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "Visited the rare cow for my sons birthday, this was our first visit. Having heard their advert on the radio many times, decided to try it as our son is a steak lover. Had a fantastic meal, and will definitely recommend and visit again. Service was great and the food was extremely good."
    dined on 30/01/2014
  • "Nice decor, friendly staff although far too dark. Starters arrived, had requested hollandaise with my fish cakes. When it arrived the hollandaise was awful & I sent it back. Waiter then told me that the chef said it was fine. The waiter then came back & told me that the chef had now agreed it wasn't right. The fish cakes were also very dry. Main courses were chicken parmagiana and a steak. My partner said the steak was tasty but very fatty. The chicken was so dry I left all of it & it wasn't even noticed by the waiter. It also didn't look like any parmigiana I'd ever seen before. I also had the cauliflower gratin which was left as well as the cauliflower was so over cooked it was mush. I was very disappointed & unlikely to return."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "Had a very good meal at the Rare Cow, Writtle. The steak was cooked as requested, and was very tender. The rest of the food was well presented and tasty too. Friendly service there as well. Would definitely recommend it."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "The rare cow was OK. Calamari were outstanding but the burger was quite dry. Chips too big and onion rings were too grease. My husband had the holy cow burger and he mentioned it was nice. Overall 6 out of 10. Wouldn't come back as I have eaten in some other places in which the food quality was better."
