  • "Brilliant! Very spacious, very cosy, great service, and food was really nice. I enjoyed it a lot and will go back again :)"

  • "Good value for money and good service. Meal was lovely and worth the money."
    dined on 21/07/2014
  • "The food is really nice, the steak was cooked perfectly and the sides are lovely, particularly the chips (really crunchy and soft and defintiley not oven cooke ready made!!) The one thing that lets the restaurant down is the service. Our drinks were forgotten, our wine only arrived after 20 mins with prompting, the waitress didn't update us on what was unavailable so we ordered and were only told after 15 mins that our order had run out and had to be changed, our dessert didn't turn up after 20 mins waiting so we had to leave without having it. Its a shame, because the place is really nice, the food was fantastic (although obviously I can't comment on the dessert!), and the staff are really friendly. They just need better organisation."

  • "The outside did look a bit rough and ready but once inside it was fine, very nice people and very nice food. The inside is very nicely done to"

  • "We had a nice family group meal on one of the steak fest nights. The food was very tasty and the steak was very nice. The house red wine was very good. The staff were pleasant and they telephoned on the day to offer an earlier table than our late evening booking which was much appreciated. The only let down is that we were not offered a dessert at all."

  • "Went on a Monday night and it was 'steak fest' they brung us out a mini burger first that was beautiful? My other half said it's the best burger he's ever had! A plate full of steak that had some medium to well done, some medium and some rare, all of them tasted amazing & full of flavour, definitely the best steak I've ever tasted! It came out with some big home made onion rings & big chunky chips cooked 3 ways & a salad, they said to us basically tell us when you've had enough & even when we had they wrapped the rest up for us! Good price as it includes house wines red and white too! Service was really good got our starter really quick and main followed shortly after, I came home and recomended all my family to go there!"

  • "i booked at table for a very special meal for my soldier son as he is about to be deployed which they knew about so knew it was A La Carte only for us which was fine until 2 hours before the booking we were told that the A La Carte menu was basically off as 'things hadnt gone according to plan there' , no starters, limited steaks, chicken and fish but we could have an indoor BBQ which we didnt want at all, we booked A La Carte at a restaurant which I think is quite reasonable. Angry and disappointed."

  • "One world... diabolicle. I will never return to the restaurant. We arrived for our table at 1pm on a Sunday to find the restaurant completely empty. We were sat down and ordered our drinks, when they arrived one of them was wrong! We ordered our food only to be told that one was not available and the other two they didnt have all of the ingredients for. We were told it was the managements fault for organising a bbq at the venue the same day. Then the chef came out to explain the same. 50 minutes later two meat mezze plates arrived (we didnt order these) and then after asking the remainder of our starts turned up. Our mains were very average (mine was burnt). We didnt even bother with desserts, we just wanted to get out."
    dined on 29/06/2014
  • "Although the ribeye's were tasty, they were somewhat chewy and slightly dry. This was mentioned to the waitress on the night."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "After reading mixed reviews was not sure what to expect but pleasantly surprised very welcoming service excellent our waitress Emily was a credit to the restaurant . We had scallops to start and were cooked to perfection followed by fillet steak which melted in your mouth portion sizes were just right it does get busy but we booked for 7.30 which was just right I recommend you try we will be going back again for sure"
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "It would help if the chef new how to cook the steak as required, it was an ok meal but there really was nothing that stood out as a fantastic place to eat. The young lad that served us was fine but, he was quite nervous and didn't have the personality to deliver that wow! Service. Overall fine but wouldn't go back."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "We were very disappointed with the service and had to wait for long periods for our food or anything we asked for."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "The steak was excellent, and the atmosphere was light and pleasant. But the service left a little to be desired."
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "The quality of the food at the Rare Cow was very good although the choice was a little limited, but it is a Steak House after all!! The service really let the restaurant down on our visit e.g. waiting 30 minutes before our order was taken and then only when we asked to place it. The staff were friendly enough but some were lacking in knowledge of the menu. Some tables were a little crammed together which would have hindered a romantic meal, however as I visited with my sister this didn't effect us!! We will give the restaurant another chance to see if there is an improved level of service as the food was definitely worth returning for."
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "Starters - chicken liver pate was not what I thought it would be as per menu. Main- my steak was spot on, my sisters came out medium rare rather than medium (as requested) after asking for it to be done again it then came out again more well done than medium! cauliflower cheese was too watery Chips where lovely Dessert - Ice cream was very good Certainly not value for money! From our table we could hear the chef shouting at the staff which was very annoying, and not relaxing at all. Waitress was very friendly although didn't really ask if we were happy when eating. No servettes on the table, no high hairs or boosters for children. Steak knife laid out for my daughter for her to play with when advised before hand she was attending"
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "Was really looking forward to this place for weeks but if was not up to scratch. Sat for 10 minutes before anyone came over, they gave menus and announced all the things they had run out of! I asked for a wine list and was told didn't have one and were running their stock down. Then they produced a warm glass of wine with ice cubes in which tasted of vinegar and was clearly gone off. They swapped this for another warm glass of something different It was not busy at all, being a Monday night but the staff were nowhere to be seen. Having said that the food was really really nice and best bit of steak I've seen in awhile!!!!"
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "We visited for Father's Day and had a great meal. Best steak we have eaten in ages! Wasn't very busy which was a shame. Dad's drunk wine for free too so this made the meal quite reasonable for a great steak! One family was having the chefs experience and that looked great fun"
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "Went to steakfest. Really good value for money but no idea which cuts of beef we ate as waiters didnt say. All really tasty though sides were plain and onion rings and chips tasted oily. Restaurant was boiling with no air con and most of the windows wouldnt open. Couldve done with music to give a bit of atmosphere to the place. Beef was good though, definitely serve good steak but the rest let it down"
    dined on 09/06/2014
  • "We tried visiting on a Monday when it's the all inclusive steakfest - as much steak chips onion rings and salad as you can eat in 2 hours along with inclusive wine or beer. This was great value at £25 per person."
    dined on 09/06/2014
  • "Staters very nice and a good amount of food. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly. We did have a groupon vouchet which made the cost alot easier on the wallet. But having to pay extra for chips and sauce. I.e peppercorn all adds up. The deserts were quite dissapointing. The crumble did not have a nice crumble top. The table opposite ordered a eton mess, the lady questioned that she could not taste the meringue. It turned out they had run out so did not have it in. Which I feel is wrong to sell them it. Summary, food very nice bit pricey but worth it. Quite fancy one of there monster food challenges. "

  • "What a fantastic place to have celebrated our wedding anniversary. A warm welcome and consistently great service throughout the meal. Perfect breaks between each course and cooked to perfection. Steaks are simply divine. "

  • "Kitchen staff not professional and food come out cold, for this visit was unacceptable behaviour from the staff and wasn't a good visit overall."
    dined on 24/05/2014
  • "The ‘Steakfest’ deal gives you two hours of Steak, Chips, Onion Rings and Salad, with house wine and small bottles of lager. And a ‘mini burger’ as a starter. There were four or five waiting staff working, and while they weren’t the most attentive waiting staff I’ve ever encountered, I’ve been served by worse. As for the food, the mini-burger was very tasty, even if it looked a little forlorn in the middle of a vast white plate. The Steak (I’m guessing it was Sirloin) was well cooked (medium rare) and well (perhaps slightly over) seasoned, but tasty nonetheless. Chips were home made and soggy, onion rings lightly battered – almost tempura batter, the side salad comprised rocket and spinach, with some sliced red onion and dressing."

  • "2nd time we've been here and the food was outstanding. We will be back, again and again! "
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "A very nice meal was had and the service was excellent. Price I felt was a bit steep but it was a beautiful steak and chips. The only thing I thought perhaps detracted from a very lovely evening was the decor. I found the decor slightly odd whilst it was eclectic and slightly eccentric it was also a bit frumpy. It was eclectic in a way that was stylish in the 1980s which just is not stylish now. High end meal, high end service and superb company, a super evening thank you but may not return which is a shame..."

  • "We turned up Saturday for our booked meal online to find out it was booked for Wednesday but we booked for Saturday you have even emailed me Sunday the day after I turned up to see if my meal was ok so it shows that I actually booked Saturday and not this coming Wednesday! I was turned away and harassed with my friends and had to drive around Chelmsford looking for a good restaurant will never return and found the staff not caring or helpful! Terrible terrible terrible not my fault your booking system mucked up and there were loads of empty table sitting there!"
    dined on 14/05/2014
  • "The food served at the steakfest was absolutely incredible. It was date night and we couldn't have asked for anything better from the staff. The steak itself was cooked perfectly. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoy's a good steak (and lots of it). "
    dined on 12/05/2014
  • "We went on a quiet night but The service was brilliant. Not intrusive but still attentive enough. Steaks were cooked to perfection. A return visit definitely on the cards. "
    dined on 08/05/2014
  • "On arrival we were taken to a small room crammed with tables all of which had parties of at least four. The noise emanating from the other tables was overpowering and even the waitress recognised this when she came to take our order so we asked to move. We were moved to a table by the kitchen which apart from a wobbly leg (which was remedied). There was only one other table in this area which had four people at , one of whom was clearly drunk. The meal itself was very good and the service throughout was outstanding but this is not the place for a romantic dinner for two. Unfortunately the behaviour of the drunk on the next table did get worse and was distracting although staff did apologise for this at the end of the evening. "

  • "This was my first visit to The Rare Cow and I was extremely impressed. The food was fantastic, if I had any criticism it would be that the pork belly in my starter was cold, but the scallops that accompanied it were cooked exquisitly. I had the 25oz prime rib and it was genuinely one of the best steaks I've eaten. Next time I'm looking forward to trying the fillet!! I think our server was quite new as he didn't know what lagers were sold or what the cheesecake of the day was ( I was told"

  • "I have a few friends who really rave about the steaks at the Rare Cow, but in my experience they're nothing to write home about. Nice cut of meat, but underseasoned. The outside had a slightly burnt taste even though it was rare as I had asked for. The servings are decent for the money, but there is no potato included with the steak so you have to add on chips or mash if you're so inclined. No complaints about the service. They didn't have my first two choices of dessert, but they were quick to offer another for free - I wasn't keen on the other choices so they comped me a liqueur coffee instead. The waiter was attentive and friendly. Good atmosphere. Not my first choice but I'd go again if invited."

  • "Been twice to the Writtle Rare Cow now, both lunch times. The 1st time I found the Steak very average & the service very slow. I thought I'd give it another go as other friends had been in the evening & found it better than me. Sadly things had got worse. Service was quicker but the food wasn't any better really. I chose the Fillet steak, Medium Rare, it was over cooked, it was sent back as the waitress said to me before I said anything that's over cooked & I agreed. The Chef returned it saying we were both wrong!! Incredible really. Side orders came out over 10 mins after service so we had nearly finished our mains. Eaton Mess desert was fabulous though, just quite small. No wonder they are having to use Groupon to attract customers.5/10"

  • "Disappointing as not much atmosphere, probably the worst service we've ever had as the waiter had a terrible attitude, obviously nipped out for a ciggie half way through service and couldn't be bothered to listen to our complaint. Saving grace was the food, although main was luke warm. Manageress was apologetic & gave a good discount in the end, but not an enjoyable experience unfortunately."
    dined on 26/04/2014
  • "My partner and I went there for my birthday. We had the hot rocks starter for 2 which is really good fun. You can't beat cooking your own selection of beautiful steak cuts at your table. We both then had a steak main course which in hindsight may have been a bit too much steak!!! But again it was delicious. The staff are very friendly and attentive without being overpowering and in your face and the restaurant is clean and appealing. Only down side is the limited number of beers on tap they provide, at 2 it was a disappointment for my partner. But overall, a great restaurant! "

  • "Excellent restuarant, it was steakfest night very friendly member of staff(Martin)but the rest of the crew were nowhere to be seen ... luckily it wasn't to busy ... that said will definitely go here again ,the steak and dessert were amazing ."

  • "Food was fantastic but service was slow, we felt confused, there was lack of organisation and we felt like they forgot about us."
    dined on 21/04/2014
  • "Food Is very good. I would recommend to fiends. But I would say to them food is good, done out quite nice service is not good serving across you etc & be prepared to serve your own wine but worth a try."
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "Went to this Restaurant for date night with my husband having heard good reviews. Wont be going back, food was not even ok and not very hot and the service pants. We did complain and received money off the bill to be fair but would not go back."
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "They didn't have a few things that were on the menu. The staff didn't seem to know what they did and didn't have. The table we had was very close to another one."
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "Food was good, lacked atmosphere, waiter shouldn't call the ladies darling all the time. Not sure if I would return to Writtle, but am invited with friends to eat at The Rare Cow in Earls Colne in May so will give it a second chance."
