Diner Reviews
  • "I've eaten in the restaurant 3 times now. On 2 occasions it was after a theatre performance. On this visit it was prior to the matinee and the timing worked very well. The waiting staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Food was very good. Many thanks"

  • "We had a wonderful meal here. The menu choice was great and the quality and presentation of the meals was fabulous. We certainly weren't disappointed. The service at the restaurant is efficient and quick which is important for a pre-theatre meal. They were also extremely accommodating of us when we got held up in gridlocked traffic locally and gave them a call - thank you!!"

  • "A great start to an exciting afternoon at RSC. The attention to detail could not be faulted and the food arrived quickly and was delicious. We did not feel rushed even though we had to be in the theatre by 1.30 pm. Good organisation both front of house and back in the kitchen"

  • "We've had some very good meals at The Rooftop, but sad to say, this wasn't one of them. We had a pre-theatre lunch so time was important (and they know this), but although the waiting staff were efficient the kitchen wasn't, and it took rather too long for our food to appear, putting us under some pressure, But the big disappointment was the meal itself - cod entirely without flavour of any kind, on a lukewarm bed of equally flavourless vegetables. We pointed out to the manager that it was so tasteless that I had left most of mine and he was very apologetic - but it still appeared on the bill, which I thought was bit naughty. I hope this was a one-off, because The Rooftop is normally a good place for pre-theatre meal."

  • "Great views over Stratford. Friendly courteous staff. Good food prompt service. Wine saved for the interval waiting for us. Jolly good experience. Will be back.. Thanks PS play not bad either.!"

  • "Eating in the theatre restaurant is always less stressful. The food was very tasty and well cooked with interesting accompaniments. The service is good although the staff are busy getting everyone through in time. There were non alcoholic cocktails on the menu, which is a bonus. Not sure how one gets a table near the window with the view having been unsuccessful in our three visits."

  • "Always the perfect way to start a theatre experience"

  • "Always look forward to The Rooftop at the RSC. Great food, friendly, professional staff and a wonderful view. A fantastic treat to accompany a visit the best theatre in the world."

  • "The food was great and a lovely view. The only drawback was a high step up to the outside dining area which was difficult for my elderly mother who has mobility problems to navigate. There was no ramp."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "This is the second time we have eaten here and on both occasions the food was very good with a good, varied choice. We drive up from London and a meal at the Rooftop is an ideal way to relax before the show. The fact that the staff know that we are seeing a show means that we can be sure of having our meal and not missing the beginning of the show."

  • "Good food at a reasonable price in convenient location"
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "It's nice to be able to eat right above the theatre. The food is mediocre. Not bad at all but there are certainly things better. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and they rought it out to me not even a full minute later. It was obvious they took a frozen pre-battered chicken breast and heated it. The view is nice if you get a well located table, but there's also a lookout point on the same floor that you can view without going to the restaurant. The cocktails were good. Service was slow clearing away our dishes and it took about ten minutes just to get the check. You're pretty much paying for a convenient location."
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "As on previous visits the food was excellent and the service quite efficient. On this occasion though, the restaurant had no record of the reservation despite having had confirmation from Open Table ! Fortunately they managed to squeeze us in without too much delay so that we made the performance on time."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "As a single diner I can feel rather out of place sometimes but the staff took me to a table by the open door onto the balcony in a quiet corner with a great view of the waterway. The waiters were happy and attentive. The meal was delicious and very well presented, arriving in a very short time. The desert was very special."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "I was a little hesitant about having a 2 course dinner before the theatre, half expecting to be over-stuffed and snoozing before the end of the first act. However the food was perfectly judged - starters which were just enough to fire the appetite, and not enough to fill you up, main courses which were beautifully cooked and of sensible proportions. There were some interesting and unusual combinations of ingredients too, which made it all the more enjoyable. Service could have been a little quicker at times, but was generally efficient and courteous, and they have made great use of a small space, with a view out over parts of Stratford that was reminiscent of some continental European cities."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "Service was excellent (during both the booking process and the meal) and it's a nice looking restaurant. The food was mostly good but nothing special - my chicken was a little dry and my partner's meringue was rock solid - but overall worth it for a nice experience."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Lovely location, good service and some excellent food. Ideal place to eat before theatre."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Lovely views and very convenient for the theatre. Service was very friendly and efficient. I had a smoked chicken salad as a starter. There was insufficient dressing on the salad so it tasted very bland. I then had the rump of lamb which was very tasty (the lamb was extremely tender) although it wasn't very hot. They waiter should have suggested ordering potatoes or another vegetable as it was not particularly substantial. Wines were reasonably priced. Four of us dined; overall the meals were enjoyed and I was perhaps the most critical. ."

  • "The food is good and good value (especially for stratford UA). The views are magnificent. Really enjoyed the experience"
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "They have a fixed price menu with great choices. There were three of us and we all chose different dishes. Ham hock terrine with piccalilli, calamari and smoked salmon. It was all good but if we were picky, there was a lack of seasoning in the ham hock and the smoked salmon was a little oily but as I said this is being picky. The main courses were first class. We chose spring lamb, fillet steak and belly pork. We ordered a side portion of fries with the lamb and coleslaw with the steak. We also had desserts lemon curt tart (fab!) creme brulee and rocky road cheesecake can't comment on those as I didn't taste them but they also looked good. Would also like to recommend the austrian white wine, it was delicious!"

  • "Pre theatre is always a little anxious because of watching the clock, but on this occasion the service was good and there was ample time for two courses and a bottle of wine before the show. Food was quite imaginative - the chicken schnitzel in particular was excellent. And the view over the river was excellent."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "We've eaten here a few times before and, while the food has always been good, this time it was excellent particularly the liver and onions which we both had. Our only slight criticism was that, despite sitting down at 5.45, we had to hurry our sweet course to make sure we were in the theatre by 7.30."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "I 'd requested a table overlooking the river but we weren't given this as a large party were booked in at 2:30 and they would be seated in this area. An odd decision to take out your best tables for the lunch session. We agreed to leave before then so moved to the table I'd requested 6 weeks ago. I last came to this restaurant a couple of years ago when it was buzzing and full of people. Some like me with friends and others who'd popped in for a quick meal in their lunch break. Today, there were just two other tables taken and the restaurant lacked any ambience which let's it down massively. The food was as delicious as before and the service was good if slow. The final negative thing was the optional 10% service charge added to the bill!"

  • "Our meal at the Theatre was well presented and tasty. Service was cheerful and good. No complaints at all."

  • "Went for a business lunch meeting. Restaurant was empty but the cod dish was great."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "Booked a table for two at the rooftop restaurant. Although we did not have the lovely balcony view we had a great meal. The service was excellent as was the food and wine. The set up of the restaurant however does feel a bit like you are in a thorough fare. Probably not much to be done about that given the design of the building. Still a unique setting and would definitely do again."

  • "Beautifully cooked and presented food complemented by superb views across the Avon and Stratford. Served by charming and well informed staff. Well Done!"
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "The food was tasty and varied; there were good gluten free options, including a proper pudding. Service was prompt and courteous and the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a seat by the window overlooking the park outside the theatre and it really made the experience. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a pre theatre meal without feeling that they were missing out on their dining experience."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "The restaurant offers pre theatre dining and the set menu is served extremely quickly after ordering. The staffing is distributed efficiently, allowing our experience to be relaxing. Selected ingredients in each dish were distinctive while flavoursome. Would definitely recommend."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "This was an exceptional dining experience on a special occasion - particularly useful was the 11.30 am Luncheon timetable so that the fullest time was available to us prior to the afternoon performance."
    dined on 05/07/2014
  • "It was an excellent meal finished at the right time for the Theatre performance. Staff were most helpful and though not a window table everything was most comfortable and pleasant"

  • "3 diners - one Scot, one English and one Japanese and everyone was delighted with their meal. Delicious. Excellent wine too (Stone the Crows shiraz and viognier). Will definitely come again."
    dined on 03/07/2014
  • "Wonderful pre theatre dinner at the roof top restaurant. Food was exceptional quality. Wine selection fantastic and of high standard. Service was exceptional and the staff could do no more to make the dining experience wonderful without being over bearing or rushing you. Can not fault the restaurant as everything was exceptional."

  • "A lovely environment with attentive service and good food - perfect for an extended family Sunday lunch gathering. Thank you."

  • "The Rooftop restaurant at the Swan theatre is wonderful! The food is exquisite, the service efficient and very pleasant and the views are amazing. I have recommended the restaurant to many friends. Service starts at 11am so there is time for a leisurely lunch before a matinee. I would say that the dining experience is better than almost any other - and I live in London so there is plenty of choice."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "My boyfriend and I had a relaxing meal here on the way from London to Manchester. We enjoyed the beetroot and goats cheese salad for a starter. For our main, we had the sole which was delicious. We ordered sides of chips and spinach to complement the fish. The presentation was immaculate and service attentive. Wine and coffee lovely as well. We were surprised we weren't actually on a rooftop at all, but the views nearby were lovely and we had a little walk to see the swans in the water and even strolled through the theatre to have a look. Very nice setting indeed."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "Lucky enough to gave great table overlooking the river. Service was excellent and attentive although a busy pre-performance time. Food very good."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "We were greeted well, seated quickly and served efficiently. The food was good quality and an interesting menu. My liver was delicious, melting in the mouth. Oh and don't miss the excellent lemon pie and Italian meringue. My only gripe was having to pay extra for potatoes which should have been the base of the liver rather than the bland and tasteless polenta. The food arrived in plenty of time and we were seated 10 minutes before the play began. The staff were very helpful and went about their work cheerfully."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "We have only eaten here pre- theatre and we cannot recommend the restaurant more highly. The manager is efficient, helpful and friendly, as are his staff. The food is very good, Imaginative and well presented."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "We allowed just over 2 hours for pre-theatre 2 course meal and was ample time for unhurried, stress free meal ready for show at 7.15. Restaurant was quiet and location and view is excellent . Food was quickly served and very good. Note that service charge is already included in the bill. I prefer to tip separately."
