Diner Reviews
  • "Staff attentive but not intrusive.Food well presented and great flavours.Catered for all our needs."
    dined on 29/07/2014
  • "A good meal that was promptly served and of good quality. Not cheap, but also, considering the location, not that expensive either (£70 for pre theatre dinner for 2 with cocktails but no wine). Service was attentive and pleasent, once you got past the humourless lady who welcomed you (with a snarl). Ignore her and the rest of the staff are delightful."

  • "Again, a delightful dinner at The Rooftop. The service is impeccable - and genuine - rare qualities in any restaurant. The food has its own focus, and, whilst superb, needs a little expansion on the starters - a seafood dish would have been welcomed, and a dark chocolate based dessert would have been seventh heaven. An excellent wine list compliments the experience. If you are here, and play-watching, and want an experience alongside it, then we unreservedly recommend The Rooftop"

  • "I have dined at the rooftop several times and love the variety of the menu and the imaginative combinations of flavours. Staff are friendly and attentive and our river view table was perfect. The chef's soups are particularly delicious!"

  • "Dining on your own can sometimes feel uncomfortable but never so at The Rooftop Restaurant. I'm always given a good table, the staff are very attentive and the food is always superb and well presented. And you don't have to worry about being late for a performance; if they know you're here to see the matinee or the evening performance they make sure you're finished in plenty time without in anyway feeling rushed. Whenever I book a ticket for a performance I always book a table at the Rooftop as well."

  • "We invariably have lunch here when coming to the RSC matinees and it has never disappointed. The location is superb, the service friendly and efficient, the food amazing. There is always a decent gluten-free choice for me and the waiting staff always pick up on this from my order and offer gf bread too. They take note of your theatre timings and serve accordingly. We shall be back."

  • "When we visit the RSC we always eat in the Rooftop, it is great for pre theatre dinner, great fresh food served by professional staff and we are always in time for the performance! Think we might try afternoon tea next visit! Thanks to all the team."
    dined on 25/07/2014
  • "It provided a unique chance to relax in a great setting with good food before seeing the play. The location was excellent, food good and the service good given where we were sitting only had one excellent waitress having to cover an extensive number of tables. As we were away from the main body of the restaurant she was serving others and unable to get down to us. This meant that we had longer waits and had a nervous time concerned that we wouldn't get served/bill settled in time for the start of the performance which was a shame as this was one of the reasons we booked to avoid that situation. It was not the waitresses fault as she was excellent but the maitre de should have ensured she had more assistance or less covers to deal with."

  • "We arrived early, were seated immediately and served quickly as required by the start time of the theatre. The food was delicious and very suited to an extremely hot evening."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "whats not to like- the food is great especially for those times when you go to the theatre- and if you cant have all your courses before the start of the the performance you can always have it served to you at interval"
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "Staff were very helpful with advice for gluten and wheat free meals for two of our party. This is the second time we have eaten here and will do so again."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "Lots of positives but Quality control of food not good enough. Bubble & squeak awful and poached egg rock hard. It would be better if the on line booking allowed an option of stable with outside view. Our table was unfortunate in its position squashed and right next to busy route for all. Still like this place a lot but might think twice about other visit given the range of alternatives in the vicinity."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "Ideal for pre-theatre dinner. Prompt courteous service so that one hour sufficient for dining. Great view over the river from our table. One minute to our theatre seats."
    dined on 23/07/2014
  • "I was expecting great things from this restaurant but sadly was disappointed. The location was great. Staff were not very friendly and there appeared to be some confusion as to what food was ordered by which table. It may help if tables were numbered. Food was ok, nothing special"

  • "Food was excellent. Had a great view table and excellent pretheater service. A must when attending RSC."

  • "3 course meal for £25 per head; 4 glasses of wine; total bill £72 Excellent food served speedily with friendly helpful staff. Highly recommended."
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "I've eaten in the restaurant 3 times now. On 2 occasions it was after a theatre performance. On this visit it was prior to the matinee and the timing worked very well. The waiting staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Food was very good. Many thanks"
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "We had a wonderful meal here. The menu choice was great and the quality and presentation of the meals was fabulous. We certainly weren't disappointed. The service at the restaurant is efficient and quick which is important for a pre-theatre meal. They were also extremely accommodating of us when we got held up in gridlocked traffic locally and gave them a call - thank you!!"
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "A great start to an exciting afternoon at RSC. The attention to detail could not be faulted and the food arrived quickly and was delicious. We did not feel rushed even though we had to be in the theatre by 1.30 pm. Good organisation both front of house and back in the kitchen"
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "We've had some very good meals at The Rooftop, but sad to say, this wasn't one of them. We had a pre-theatre lunch so time was important (and they know this), but although the waiting staff were efficient the kitchen wasn't, and it took rather too long for our food to appear, putting us under some pressure, But the big disappointment was the meal itself - cod entirely without flavour of any kind, on a lukewarm bed of equally flavourless vegetables. We pointed out to the manager that it was so tasteless that I had left most of mine and he was very apologetic - but it still appeared on the bill, which I thought was bit naughty. I hope this was a one-off, because The Rooftop is normally a good place for pre-theatre meal."
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "Great views over Stratford. Friendly courteous staff. Good food prompt service. Wine saved for the interval waiting for us. Jolly good experience. Will be back.. Thanks PS play not bad either.!"
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "Eating in the theatre restaurant is always less stressful. The food was very tasty and well cooked with interesting accompaniments. The service is good although the staff are busy getting everyone through in time. There were non alcoholic cocktails on the menu, which is a bonus. Not sure how one gets a table near the window with the view having been unsuccessful in our three visits."
    dined on 17/07/2014
  • "This was our second visit to the theatre and where better to eat our pre-theatre evening meal. Pre-booking is essential and letting them know which performance you're attending takes some of the time pressure off. All the better to relax and enjoy the meal. The menu, quality of food, service and value certainly tick all of our boxes."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Always the perfect way to start a theatre experience"
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Always look forward to The Rooftop at the RSC. Great food, friendly, professional staff and a wonderful view. A fantastic treat to accompany a visit the best theatre in the world."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "The food was great and a lovely view. The only drawback was a high step up to the outside dining area which was difficult for my elderly mother who has mobility problems to navigate. There was no ramp."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "This is the second time we have eaten here and on both occasions the food was very good with a good, varied choice. We drive up from London and a meal at the Rooftop is an ideal way to relax before the show. The fact that the staff know that we are seeing a show means that we can be sure of having our meal and not missing the beginning of the show."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Good food at a reasonable price in convenient location"
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "It's nice to be able to eat right above the theatre. The food is mediocre. Not bad at all but there are certainly things better. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and they rought it out to me not even a full minute later. It was obvious they took a frozen pre-battered chicken breast and heated it. The view is nice if you get a well located table, but there's also a lookout point on the same floor that you can view without going to the restaurant. The cocktails were good. Service was slow clearing away our dishes and it took about ten minutes just to get the check. You're pretty much paying for a convenient location."
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "As on previous visits the food was excellent and the service quite efficient. On this occasion though, the restaurant had no record of the reservation despite having had confirmation from Open Table ! Fortunately they managed to squeeze us in without too much delay so that we made the performance on time."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "As a single diner I can feel rather out of place sometimes but the staff took me to a table by the open door onto the balcony in a quiet corner with a great view of the waterway. The waiters were happy and attentive. The meal was delicious and very well presented, arriving in a very short time. The desert was very special."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "I was a little hesitant about having a 2 course dinner before the theatre, half expecting to be over-stuffed and snoozing before the end of the first act. However the food was perfectly judged - starters which were just enough to fire the appetite, and not enough to fill you up, main courses which were beautifully cooked and of sensible proportions. There were some interesting and unusual combinations of ingredients too, which made it all the more enjoyable. Service could have been a little quicker at times, but was generally efficient and courteous, and they have made great use of a small space, with a view out over parts of Stratford that was reminiscent of some continental European cities."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "Service was excellent (during both the booking process and the meal) and it's a nice looking restaurant. The food was mostly good but nothing special - my chicken was a little dry and my partner's meringue was rock solid - but overall worth it for a nice experience."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Lovely location, good service and some excellent food. Ideal place to eat before theatre."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Lovely views and very convenient for the theatre. Service was very friendly and efficient. I had a smoked chicken salad as a starter. There was insufficient dressing on the salad so it tasted very bland. I then had the rump of lamb which was very tasty (the lamb was extremely tender) although it wasn't very hot. They waiter should have suggested ordering potatoes or another vegetable as it was not particularly substantial. Wines were reasonably priced. Four of us dined; overall the meals were enjoyed and I was perhaps the most critical. ."
    dined on 11/07/2014
  • "The food is good and good value (especially for stratford UA). The views are magnificent. Really enjoyed the experience"
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "They have a fixed price menu with great choices. There were three of us and we all chose different dishes. Ham hock terrine with piccalilli, calamari and smoked salmon. It was all good but if we were picky, there was a lack of seasoning in the ham hock and the smoked salmon was a little oily but as I said this is being picky. The main courses were first class. We chose spring lamb, fillet steak and belly pork. We ordered a side portion of fries with the lamb and coleslaw with the steak. We also had desserts lemon curt tart (fab!) creme brulee and rocky road cheesecake can't comment on those as I didn't taste them but they also looked good. Would also like to recommend the austrian white wine, it was delicious!"
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "Pre theatre is always a little anxious because of watching the clock, but on this occasion the service was good and there was ample time for two courses and a bottle of wine before the show. Food was quite imaginative - the chicken schnitzel in particular was excellent. And the view over the river was excellent."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "We've eaten here a few times before and, while the food has always been good, this time it was excellent particularly the liver and onions which we both had. Our only slight criticism was that, despite sitting down at 5.45, we had to hurry our sweet course to make sure we were in the theatre by 7.30."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "I 'd requested a table overlooking the river but we weren't given this as a large party were booked in at 2:30 and they would be seated in this area. An odd decision to take out your best tables for the lunch session. We agreed to leave before then so moved to the table I'd requested 6 weeks ago. I last came to this restaurant a couple of years ago when it was buzzing and full of people. Some like me with friends and others who'd popped in for a quick meal in their lunch break. Today, there were just two other tables taken and the restaurant lacked any ambience which let's it down massively. The food was as delicious as before and the service was good if slow. The final negative thing was the optional 10% service charge added to the bill!"
