Diner Reviews
  • "A lovely setting, the perfect mix of culture and food. The food was very good, nice staff and a special place. Try. And go when they are not too busy as our main course took 45 minutes to arrive."

  • "Very good and geared up for the theatre! Great service, food is very good blue and very enjoyable."

  • "Having attended a matinee performance at the theatre , it was a pleasure to come back in the evening and have a relaxed meal with friends after the evening performance had started. The tables used were those overlooking the river as a less busy time than pre-performance , the waiters were helpful and friendly and the food very enjoyable. As a wheelchair user , it was easy access and no issues with space, so would be very happy to return in the future."

  • "A most enjoyable pre theatre dinner which added to my overall pleasure in visiting Stratford."

  • "My over-riding memory of my visit to The Rooftop Restaurant was the professionism of the waiting staff. My wife and I were served by three or four young people at different times and each one was excellent: friendly, without being 'over the top'; knowledgeable; and just generally very good at their jobs. Also nice to have a vegetarian option that doesn't involve cheese!"
    dined on 25/08/2014
  • "Food generally good; pork belly fat not crackled. Service was woeful; pace moved between fast-food like to non-existent - I watched my drink sit on the bar for 10 minutes before collecting myself!"
    dined on 23/08/2014
  • "Excellent food, wonderful view from a window table, However we had booked for 17h30 to be able to appreciate our meal and make curtain time at the theatre at 19h15. Unfortunately, we were still waiting for our main dish beyond 18h30. We were told it was a problem in the kitchen, but I'm sure we had simply been forgotten. This is too bad as we truly enjoyed sitting up high, looking down on the park and rooftops below, and the duck paté was extraordinary. Unfortunately, I had to gobble down the main dish, and therefore cannot say much for it and there was no time for desert."
    dined on 23/08/2014
  • "A splendid view, fine food, friendly service, all in time for the evening theatre performance."

  • "Good food. Attentive and very helpful service. And the Bard to follow. What more to look forward to, next time?"
    dined on 23/08/2014
  • "I was rather impressed with the food but unfortunatly i ordered a fillet steak and it came out rare when i asked for medium rare. I did ask a waitress and they did take it back which i was pleasent about and they brought a new one out to me. Overall i would reccomend the restaurant to my friends."

  • "We had an early supper after watching the matinee "Two Gentlemen of Verona" . Very good food and wine in a wonderful setting overlooking the river. This gave us the perfect setting to discuss the merits of the play with our friends."
    dined on 21/08/2014
  • "We very much enjoyed our visit to The Rooftop Restaurant and our table near to the window was a lovely surprise. The food was well presented, with one exception (see private note below) and the service was outstanding."
    dined on 21/08/2014
  • "The food, ambiance, view and theatre occasion all make this a great restaurant but despite excellent waiting staff the food takes too long to arrive for a comfortable pre-performance meal. Perhaps the food could be less ambitious giving patrons time to digest and enjoy the menu more. All praise to the waiting people - friendly, helpful and totally rushed off their feet to do justice to the lunch/dinner. Best eat there as an occasion on its own, not as a prelude to Shakespeare."
    dined on 21/08/2014
  • "Having booked to see a matinee performance in the theatre at 1:15pm, we booked the restaurant for lunch beforehand. We booked at 11:30am to have as much time as possible before the performance. We made the staff aware when booking that we were attending the matinee that day, mentioned it when being seated and had our tickets and program on the table throughout the meal. It took an hour from being seated to getting our main courses. After finishing, we sat for 20 minutes before anyone cleared our plates, at which point it was too late to have dessert or coffee, so we asked for the bill. Eventually it came but nobody came to take payment and we had to go to the desk to pay. The food, when it came, was very good but poor service ruined it."

  • "Booked for our pre-show Wedding Anniversary meal and we were not disappointed. A lovely river view table, friendly and helpful staff, excellent food and even an "interval" pudding - Eton Mess with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate around the side of the plate! All in all, a lovely evening."
    dined on 20/08/2014
  • "For some reason we had never previously considered eating in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre restaurant before a performance. Bad mistake, we hace learned. The food was great, the facilities good, but the service was absolutely terrific - we really enjoyed the meal and we did not have to go far to our seats. The only danger was the possibility of falling asleep during the performance - but the company made sure that it was no real danger. A perfect evening, and one of the best days out we've had for a long time"

  • "Pre Theatre our food was not hot, and went cold quickly because of cold plates/presumably to speed things up?! This was not the case the previous evening at 7.30 when our total experience was much better. As we had booked for 5.30 pre theatre there was really no shortage of time. We felt it necessary to request side vegetables since we were only having 2 courses and the portions were quite small. Cold chicken is still edible but not cold cod."
    dined on 19/08/2014
  • "Our pre-theatre dinner was, as usual, delicious and served in exemplary timely fashion by smiling, helpful staff. The view over the river and beautiful Warwickshire countryside always adds value to the occasion."
    dined on 19/08/2014
  • "Lunch at the RSC Restaurant...what a lovely view! And the food was really great. A lovely soup, followed by a delicious little schnitzel of chicken for me, and superb Cornish mackerel, followed by tender calves' liver for the other one. Then steamed sponge pudding for one, and a delightful Eton mess for the other. Service was efficient and unobtrusive, and the whole experience excellent. Cannot wait to go again!"
    dined on 19/08/2014
  • "The service was excellent and the ambiance The food did not live up to this. One veggie disappointed that alternatives both potato based and too heavy for summer eating. Not enough accompanying vegetables or salad and those otherwise extra. Tiny portion of ice-cream. Wouldn't recommend other than for a coffee to enjoy the surroundings. Could do better."
    dined on 18/08/2014
  • "We were delighted with the service and standard of our dinner at the Rooftop Restaurant. It's the perfect place for a pre-theatre dinner at the RSC in Stratford. Our food was delicious!"

  • "Pleasant setting, nice staff, good food, good value."
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • " In short- amazing service, great food at a good price, top location and atmosphere. Can't say enough to praise The Rooftop and particularly the staff there. We went for our 10th anniversary (and my wife's birthday) so I really wanted every part to be special and the staff helped make that even more than I imagined. From a request on the website booking form they gave us an excellent table with privacy and a top view over the river, complementary raspberry Bellini's which were lovely and a specially finished dessert each with happy anniversary piped on mine and happy birthday on my wife's. Every one of the staff couldn't have been more caring or attentive. They coordinated with theatre staff to make this an amazing experience. Thanks"

  • "We had booked a table for a meal after a show we had seen in the afternoon. However every other person in the place was booked in for an evening show - despite saying so to staff it still felt as if they were doing their best to get us through in time for an evening performance, even the bill was brought in a rush just as we had finished our dessert. We love the resaurant and the staff are friendly next time we'll make sure we book at a time that doesn't coincide with rush hour"
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "Amazing view! Brilliant, fast service! Enjoyed all aspects of our meals, but were disappointed by an overdone poached egg on the bubble and squeak cake. Apart from that everything was gorgeous and had a table with a brilliant view, as we'd requested, as we were celebrating a special occasion! Would recommend!"
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "Good food, but relatively limited gluten free food on menu - not even gluten free biscuits so that gluten sensitive people can have cheese and biscuits - biscuits will keep a long time. Service generally OK, but staff did not seem happy - there was a bit of an atmosphere as though something had happened earlier."
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "This restaurant has a pleasant airy atmosphere with good views of the river area in Stratford. We had a late lunch which was well cooked and presented, without any frills. Service was also very pleasant and welcoming. All in all, good value and quality. Also interesting and varied wine list."
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "Really enjoyed food again. Have been 4 times in last year and each time service has been friendly and attentive and the food has been tasty and plentiful. The staff do a great job especially considering the relatively tight turn around time before a 1.15 matinee!"
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "It started badly when I unfolded my starched napkin and discovered it was blotched with dark brown stains which had obviously survived laundering and not been spotted in the starching and folding process. I requested a clean one, which came, but there was no apology. We were seated at 11.45 and our starters came promptly. We then waited until 12.40, nearly an hour after first sitting down, for our main courses. These only came after I enquired and pointed out we were running out of time. Again, no apology or explanation was offered for the delay. We were attending a performance at 1.15, which I had indicated when I made the booking, so this left us no time for a dessert or even coffee. Food: pleasant but dull."

  • "very good in all respects this is all i need to say"
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "Took my wife and parents for my mums 70th before going to the theatre, plenty of staff available and the food was fantastic. We did the three course set menu which was exceptional value."
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "V good quality and good value for Stratford We were sat in the private dining area which hosts 6 tables when not booked, very quiet and personal unlike some areas which are quite crowded. Either way would recommend a visit"
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "We had a pre-theatre lunch and are comparing it to the good pre-opera dinners we have in Ffesh in Cardiff's Millennium Centre. In the RSC the service was slow; seemingly because no-one was allocated to our table/group of tables. We seemed to be served by every member of the waiting staff. We waited 25 minutes for desserts which only had to be plated-up. The menu offers (too?) many choices for a pre-theatre meal which needs to be served quickly. Unfortunately the food is not that good and we suspect the puddings and some starters were bought in menu items. Next time we're going to Carluccio's over the road."
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "The Rooftop restaurant is the ideal venue for a pre-performance meal at the RSC. The ambience is pleasant, the service impeccable with attention to ensuring that you are served and meal completed in plenty of time for the start of the performance, though there is never a sense of being rushed. Portions are not huge but adequate for a relatively early dinner. Food tasty and well cooked and presented. Thorough recommend."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Reception had noted that we needed to be fed and out in an hour and the food came promptly; with excellent service. High standard of food. Good choice of wines. We did not take up the offer but were invited back to take desert during the interval ..nice touch"
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "We enjoyed it very much and went for the 2 course menu which was lovely. The portions are not huge but they mean you will walk away having enjoyed the meal and not feeling uncomfortable. The wine was reasonably priced by the glass and the service was great."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "our first time dining pre theatre. The service and staff were excellent couldn't fault them .The choice of food was also excellent and had no complaints about the meal, all excellent."
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "Excellent service, menu and value for pre- theatre dining. We were made welcome and were not rushed yet we had just the right time to take our seats and enjoy the show"
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "We were seated in a couples "ghetto", a wedge shaped area tapering to about twice the width of one of the tables. All the tables for two were lined against a brick wall with a glass wall opposite and some views of buildings outside, an outlook that did not really live up to the promise of a "rooftop" restaurant. Our table was at the thin end, the last in the row, and quite isolated from the main restaurant so I have very little idea what the rest of it was like. The food was good and the service excellent until it came time to pay. Because many people were leaving at the same time (in time for the evening performance) there was suddenly a shortage of card machines and people to operate them."
    dined on 11/08/2014
  • "The efficiency of the staff means that you can be confident that you can enjoy a delicious meal with lots of time to savour the theatre performance to come ."
