  • Good food but poor service

We arrived in plenty of time to have a leisurely pre-theatre lunch prior to our matinee performance. The ordering of food and drink went without a hitch. Our starters came reasonably promptly. Unfortunately, this when the service level appeared to drop. Around us other diners who ordered after us were having their main courses served whilst we twiddled our thumbs. Afer about 20 minutes I politely when were would be expecting our next course; the performance was then only 35 minutes from starting! I was told that we were next. No explanation was given for the delay despite asking for one. Our main courses arrived about 10 minutes later; thus at least 30 minutes after our starter!. After further questioning I was eventually told the reason; the kitchen had not been informed that we had finished our starters. I work in a service profession and mistakes can happen, but I drill into my staff that we should be honest if a mistake has been made. Most customers appreciate honesty but become upset if no proper explanation is given. I think it does call into question whether their kitchen ordering system wants looking at and front of house should be trained to watch out for customers waiting for their food too long. As far as the food goes, it was good, and I would go back, I would just make sure that the waiting staff knew what had happened last time!

The Rooftop restaurant is the perfect place for eating before moving downstairs to the theatre - in fact the restaurant is an extension of the total theatrical experience. We loved the choice of starters - both chose parma ham, mozarella and figs - and were not disappointed. The sea bass main course was cooked perfectly and we had absolutely no space for dessert afterwards, despite the tempting choices! All was served quickly and with a friendly smile despite the number of people eating that evening. We always eat at the Rooftop when we come to Stratford - it's part of the treat!

The Rooftop does an excellent job, giving an apparently unhurried meal before whichever performance one is attending. The staff are always charming, the food well chosen. A particularly nice touch is the complimentary still or sparkling water.

Very convenient for pre-theatre dining, but the restaurant needs to raise its game on food quality and preparation. Lamb was tough and unappetising and the sea bass tasteless and very small in portion. Overall impression: poor value and better to eat out.

We booked for an evening meal after a day in Stratford. The restaurant was very well presented and a lot bigger than we expected. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced, we had 2 courses for £19.50, or they do 3 courses for £24.50. The staff were very attentive but not in an intrusive way and we would certainly eat there again if in Stratford.

Our Saturday evening dinner was delicious, the staff attentive, polite and friendly. Our only suggestion to improve a fabulous experience is the rectifying of the lighting. Even had we been there for a romantic meal ( we weren't) it would have been far too subtle.

We ate here on Saturday evening (a party of four) and from the moment we walked in until the moment we left we had a great time. The staff were courteous and helpful, gave us plenty of time to talk and chose from the lovely menu. The food was delicious and the views from the restaurant, even though it was dark were lovely. I think in the summer months the view would be amazing. I will certainly return.

Very tasty selection of food, provided by pleasant staff in the most convenient and very smart restaurant. Experience marred by been seated at a poorly lit table that made reading detail on menu difficult and initial order been taken by a waiter who although polite gave the impression of been stressed and in a rush, so unlike customers on nearby tables served by another waiter we weren't given any detail or recommendations as to what to chose .

A very good choice on the menu and quality & quantity of food good. Very fishy smoked haddock fishcake starter. All dishes well presented. Service - unusually - was a bit variable. We had to ask twice for a second bottle of still water and the requested extra bread never arrived. Then a long gap before desserts or tea arrived (coffee thus arrived and was drunk long before the desserts). On chasing, it was clear that the order had gone astray. With 15 mins to curtain up - a duplicate order of everything arrived simultaneously! Nevertheless staff did deal with - and with good grace and apologies. GF almond and quince dessert well worth waiting for!

If you are seeing a play at the RSC then a pre or post-theatre meal in the Rooftop Restaurant is a must. The ambience is relaxed but has an element of "something special" and the decor is quirky with intimate lighting. The menu has a pleasing variety of dishes, the presentation is beautiful but most importantly the food is delicious - and there is enough of it! The staff are friendly and best of all they are "geared up" to make sure that you get into the theatre in good time, the service is superb. Next time we are in Stratford we are planning on booking a table and making an evening of it as it is a lovely restaurant in it's own right. I would unreservedly recommend the Rooftop Restaurant - enjoy!

I have eaten at the Rooftop Restaurant many times and always had a lovely meal with great service. The cocktails are amazing too! It feels quite a special night out but the prices are akin to many of the higher end chain restaurants where you don't get such a wonderful setting or special experience and the food is always freshly prepared and delicious.

I booked here reluctantly as last time our meal was a total disaster, however the location and views are wonderful, so I booked. It was important that the meal was right as this was a reunion with treasured friends after many, many years and guess what.....it was perfect. Hurrah! The food was good the staff friendly and helpful, the food good and our table gave us wonderfull views over the river. Thank you all, we will be back.

We were going to see Love Labour's Lost at 7.15 with my wife and daughter, and booked the restaurant for 6.15pm as this was the only slot they had available Thought it was all going to be rushed, but it wasn't The service was excellent, as was the food and wine All went like clockwork, and they suggested we had our desserts at the interval which was a surprised and again worked like clockwork, and we even had time for a coffee

The pre-theatre menu selection is very good - there is a well-considered range of dishes that will suit every taste. The service was also spot-on. The staff are very friendly and timed each course just right so that we weren't rushed to finish our meal yet did not worry about making it to the show. The location is obviously very convenient if going to the theatre but the quality of the food makes it an excellent dining choice in its own right. Highly recommended.

This restaurant has the convenience of being in the same building as the theatres. The wines were good and reasonably priced. The sea bass I ordered was dry, and served on top of a dry combination of new potatoes and artichokes. When my first course salad arrived, it had no dressing and the waitress said she would bring some; none came so I had to go find a waitress. We were stuck along a narrow corridor off to the side of the restaurant; I was told diners were automatically given the best tables based on how far in advance they booked. It would have been helpful if someone would have told me this when I booked and explicitly asked for a table location. Sadly, we won't be going back.

Arrived for dinner on 1st December at 5.45pm. 20mins after having been shown to our table we had to find a waitress to place our order. The starter arrived 30mins later. The guy who brought it from the kitchen had no idea which table it should go to. Similar problems with the main course - calves liver with bacon - but the food was cold when it eventually arrived. There wasn't enough time to order a desert before the start of the performance at 7.15pm. 90mins for two courses and a disappointing meal - an absolute disaster to the start of the evening. Thank goodness the play was just wonderful Dr Jim Williamson Enfield

Overall very good and would recommend to anybody for a pre theatre meal which is what we did perhaps a little bit expensive but you pay a premium for Stratford and the venue. The only issue is the service charge included in the bill I am not a fan of this system and prefer to tip what I feel service is worth.I know you can ask to have it removed but this would make you feel awkward
