There are lots of pluses and a few minuses about eating at The Swan. It's obviously extremely convenient if you're going on to a show at The Globe or The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse - you're on the spot and the restaurant is geared to getting you to the show on time. The setting is great, with wonderful views across the Thames to St Paul's. The service was outstandingly friendly and attentive. There's a big selection of wines by the glass. Minuses? The food was good, but slightly less tasty than it sounded on the menu - haddock arancini a bit hard and short of haddock, for example. If you go pre-theatre there is only the pre-theatre menu available, with a choice of three dishes per course. That is carefully explained to you before you go, which suggests to me that there may have been grumbles about this. And while the price is reasonable for three courses, no two-course deal is available. The four of us ate only one pudding, for the cost of four, which in effect pushes up the price, and I don't like paying for food I can't eat.

The Globe is like 2 very different restauants on different days. On a weekday evening the food and service are both excellent and on our previous visit I wrote a glowing review. On Sunday, however, the place is like any other pub, only with a limited Sunday lunch menu, slow service, loud groups and mediocre food - all at an over the top price. Oh - and we were overcharged. Avoid on Sundays!!!

The service and food are good if not outstanding but the room and particularly the views are really excellent. They have a tendency to fill your wine and water glass far, far too often so that it becomes quite annoying and they took away the top of the water bottle which was unwise as both of us were tired and so clumsy. The food was interesting but not exceptional. I had the aranccini with fish and leeks which were nice but the filling for aranccini needs to have a stronger flavour to balance the rice and there were extraordinarily few gnocchi in my main dish. but we had a good Vinho Verde for a reasonable £26. They knew we were going to a 7.30 production but it all got a bit chaotic and we finally squeaked into the theatre as they rang the 1 minute bell, rather nerve wracking and indigestion inducing. But, the location makes up for all that.

I have been to the Swan many times as it is a favourite as a special treat. However, this visit I was disappointed at the reception I received when i arrived (smartly dressed) 5 minutes early for my table. Apart from being 'looked up and down' in a derisory way by the rather abrupt greeting staff, she then told me my table wasn't ready and that I would 'have to go back downstairs' - I have a problem with my leg, so I said I would rather sit down than climb more of the stairs I'd just come up! - I didn't mind sitting at my table as it was vacant, but just needed re-dressing. Again more disdainful looks and I was taken to a room across the landing that seemed to be a cafe/bar. Why she couldn't have suggested this in the first place, I don't know. I had been sitting there for about 2 minutes max when she came back and commanded me back to the restaurant as the table was now ready! Was this initial dismissal really necessary? I could have gone all the way downstairs to have immediately have had to turn round and come back again in the time it took her to ready the table! My companion for the evening was similarly greeted with a 'where are you going?, come back here' barked at her when she dared to come straight up from the bar to the restaurant all by herself! This is no way to treat customers - your greeter on the night (Thurs 13/11) needs retraining or placed in a non-customer facing role. I have marked the service as 'outstanding' btw, As our Brazilian female table waitress was the polar opposite to the door guard, and couldn't have been lovelier, or more efficient' Ambience marked low as we had a very loud man at the table next to us, which obviously the Swan can't do much about, but that along with the rather rude 'welcome' didn't warrant a higher score.

We went to the swan after The Lord Mayor's fireworks therefore we arrived by 17.55. Turns out we then had to order the theatre menu , which was obviously limited. ...or wait till 18.30. After much debate we went for theatre menu. It was ok, fine for pre theatre food if the theatre is main event of your evening but was a little underwelming if the meal was your main event! Still it saved us a fair bit of cash and everyone was pleased to be finished early after a long day sightseeing and home in time for x-factor :-)

The location is marvellous, the decor pleasant if poorly lit, the service friendly if inept.... This would all be forgivable as the place is so convenient for the theatre, but we won't be going again. Our fishcake main course (the only fish option) was horrible - overcooked, over-seasoned, greasy and heavy. The wine was outrageously expensive - nearly £50 for a dull, flabby, and warm, soave. The desserts were pleasant (rice pudding) but not particularly interesting, and the espresso coffees just about the worst we've had in a year of eating out in London restaurants. We wrote it off this time as a charitable donation for the theatre, but we'll try eating at the Tate Modern next time we have tickets for the Globe theatres.

With any pre-theatre meals the thoughts are likely to be more of the performance to come than the food in front of you. However, we have never been disappointed by the food. This was the first time we had come for lunch so the food was very much centre stage. Our guests who had never been to The Swan before were delighted and have resolved to come again and we know we shall.

Our pre-theatre service ran slightly late. The staff were very helpful in arranging desserts and coffee to be made available during the interval. They were waiting for us as we arrived back at the interval. All the food was delicious but a very special thanks to all the staff for giving us such a great evening with extra special service. I hope I'll be able to return soon.

We thought the menu choice was uninspiring and the monkfish option rather bland. Two of our party opted for the cod, which again was rather boring. The celeriac purée was sparce, the kale more interesting. This is not a place fit for foodies. The puddings were better, particularly the chocolate brownie. The coffee was good. We found the continual topping up of our glasses rather intrusive. The situation of course is wonderful and the views superb. We sat down with high hopes! I would not recommend this restaurant, we all thought the food was disappointing.

Wonderful location. Particularly liked the look of the semi-private room overlooking The Globe Theatre court. .Food excellent quality (especially the lamb shank) & stylish. Service attentive - BUT head waiter & staff consistently leant across one of my guests to serve my 2nd guest, though there was PLENTY of room to walk round & do it politely. Side dishes v. expensive. £3.50 each for 2 tablespoons of red cabbage & 15 chips.

My dinner partner and I found the menu rather odd and eccentric. The service could not have been better and our waitress was outstanding. But we struggled to find something on the menu which really appealed. The combinations were unusual and everything seemed to be served with polenta - from my extremely salty cod with red wine sauce to my wife's pork chop.

Had a drink in the bar before dinner. Bar staff were friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. Lots of people in the bar but the atmosphere was relaxed. We sat outside to take in the beautiful evening views of the Thames and St. Paul's. The restaurant is upstairs and we were given a fantastic table for two, overlooking the river. (Personally, I'd have positioned the chairs so that both customers could see the view, but currently one faces the window and the other faces into the restaurant). I had the burrata followed by the fillet of sea trout. My partner had the veal starter, followed by lemon sole. All courses were beautifully presented although somewhat lacking in flavour. Service was attentive and the house wines were very good!

Service was outstanding; nothing was too much trouble and the staff were very aware that we needed to be out in time for the play. Food was reasonable and convenient on a wet October evening for the play. I could not book at 6pm though it was not full at 6.15pm when we arrived. We were rushed though as food took a little time to arrive as one of our party had to catch us up. All in all it served a purpose but not a destination place to eat - many more places in the area that compete. Barley risotto was tasty and sad we did not have time to sample the puds.

Lovely pub and the upstairs dining room has great views over the river. We came for Sunday lunch, a really nice Sunday lunch menu. Our waitress was lovely, very helpful and friendly. The menu isn't cheap for Sunday lunch but the food and wine were very good so pretty good value- and you expect to pay a bit more for the ambience. Our only complaint was that the food came out lukewarm at best. A couple of our party complained and the meals were replaced but they did have to wait a while. The waiter said the reason it took so long to replace was that he had to run up and down stairs to the kitchen rather than using the lift which he would have to wait 30 mins for- which perhaps gives a bit of a clue as to why the food was coming out cold!

We had a very enjoyable lunch before seeing the "Comedy of Errors" at the Globe". The food was very good, the service friendly, attentive and highly professional. What better way to start the afternoon's entertainment. Pity about the music, though, too loud and thumping. Would prefer no music at all, just my comnpanion's conversation, but otherwise something quiet and inoffensive

The Swan is a lovely place to go to for a meal with panoramic views of the river and ambience. But the service and attention to detail is poor value for the money you pay. The pre-theatre menu is limited for vegetarians and those with nut allergies. We had informed the restaurant in advance of both needs but were still served a starter with walnuts. When I discussed this with the waiter, he very grudgingly acknowledged it as a mistake. I had to point out that traces of nuts as a disclaimer on the menu is not the same as being served actual nuts. It made us wary of the trolleyed desserts and we risked just the one which was prepared without nuts. The service was incredibly slow and we barely made it to our seats in time for the performance.

We went to the swan for my husbands birthday and had an uncharacteristic poor experience. The soup was not described as having cheese in it and it definately did. Which caused problems for our lactose intolerant friend. I then had the risotto which was rock hard. I sent it back and got another. Which was also rock hard. I had also arranged for a birthday plate for my husband which never arrived. We were charged for the soup but not the risotto. I do hope this is a one off as we have has many lovely meal here and written many lovely reviews.
