Beautifully presented food and every one of the 5 courses tasted delicious. However the main course was on the small side, a tiny piece of bream with one portion of green vegetable in a tomato based sauce; it would have been nice to have a selection of vegetables with the main course. Service was friendly and attentive.

Just like pubs used to be. Open door welcome to traditional bar with low beamed ceiling and dogs walking round on the old stone flags, happy to see each person that came in. Really relaxed atmosphere but extremely polite and efficient service. The dining room is smart but not too formal. Service absolutely spot on. Not too large a menu but good selection of dishes. Food is beautifully presented and everything we tried was delicious and perfectly cooked. Have been here before with friends on a busier night an service just as good, as was the food.

The dining room has been refurbished, lighter and therefore appears more spacious. Toilets refurbished, important these days. Food and service difficult to improve. The tasting menu at £30 is great and good value. The new young french serveur was attentive and good at his job. Probably the best restaurant in North Hertfordshire.

This was our first visit and an anniversary meal. We tried the tasting menu and found the food delicious; it was obviously carefully prepared and beautifully cooked. The atmosphere felt intimate but we had a very spacious table and the small size of the dining room meant the friendly waitress was always close at hand. However, we did find that all the savoury courses were on the small side so as we turned up hungry it was a while before we felt satisfied! Some bread alongside the starters would have been better. Pudding was perfect though and overall the tasting menu, which includes a glass of champagne, was good value. We'd certainly go again.

Our first time back to the Waggoners in a while not through choice we have not lived in the area for a while. The food has come on leaps and bounds and is serving very good high end modern french food. Attentive but not over bearing service along with a very good wine list. The food and wine is not the cheapest you will find but it is well worth the money supremely well prepared and cooked to perfection. The owner Lauren is a specially passionate man about his food and wine and his french heritage. I would highly encourage anyone to visit and have a great dining experience at the Waggoners.

We had the 5 course taster menu with champagne and must say none of the courses disappointed. We started with a cold pea and truffle oil soup followed by scallops with raisins which were surprisingly beautiful. Mains was guinea fowl on black pudding with 2 puddings- a fragrant mango sorbet and then a lemon curd and raspberry ice cream. Lovely on the whole but would recommend the champagne to be optional with a Prosecco.

We chose from the a la carte menu and the food we received was very good with the exception of the sea bream which was quite small and a little overcooked. Bread is now charged at £3.50 whereas on our last visit this was complimentary. The creme brulee dessert was sublime. A drink was offered to compensate for the disappointing fish. Next time we will try the tasting menu which seemed very popular with other diners.

I took my wife here for our wedding anniversary and had a very enjoyable evening, in this quaint country pub. The food and wine was very good and the Services was exceptional. The staff are clearly experienced and very well trained. Good value for money. My only criticism if any would be the courses came out pretty quickly, no sooner had the plates been cleared from the previous course the next course was on us. I like to take my time over a meal and have a little break between courses, but that's just a personal preference.

We were disappointed that the a la carte was unavailable on the Sunday but we made most of what they had on offer. I had 2 starters instead of the main. Charcuterie platter- which was very nice and the smoked salmon and haddock with a tarter mousse. My other half had a pea and truffle oil soup which he thought was too well seasoned! with cod and puy lentils as main. The kids shared a chicken roast which they lapped up too. The stuffing was remarkable with apricots and cut into discs. For dessert the creme brûlée was delicious and the stewed strawberries nothing I have had before. My partners cheese platter was very much appreciated too. Will return for the midweek tasting menu.

My husband and I went for his birthday. There was a small menu choice which I think is a good thing. Each course was beautifully cooked and presented and the chocolate dessert was to die for. Many restaurants are let down by their desserts but not this one! It was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The decor was a bit dated but the food was so good we didn't care. Staff were friendly and attentive, the chef amazing! Highly recommended.

went. on the champagne menu, limited choice but the food was very good indeed. Also, due to it being a group booking (6) we were given a priivate room. It would have been nice to be given a choice as we felt we missed out on the atmosphere of the restaurant. However, a very enjoyable evening with lovely food at a very good price.

The Waggoners is a gem of a place looking like a gastro pub as you approach but don't be deceived, the food and the ambience are reminiscent of fine dining in town. The owner and his polite but friendly staff are always on hand but never intrusive. We went for the scallops to start and the Chateaubriand to share for our main dish. The scallops were full of flavour and the generous serving of steak to share was cooked exactly as ordered. And so to dessert. Elsewhere, cheese can be unceremoniously dumped on a platter, but not here. Eight very different but complementary samplers served on slate rounded off a lovely evening. This restaurant proved again that it's attention to flavour and detail is top notch.

This time we went for the taster menu, my wife does not eat meat and the main course was changed to a fish dish which seems to be a problem when trying to do this at other places. Enjoyed every course with the puddings being the highlight as is a selection served up on a tray and 2 of each to save arguments. The wine as always was good and very good value. Even being a Friday night was busy but the service was never rushed the way to enjoy good French food.

Tucked away just off the A1(M) in the little hamlet of Ayot St Peter is a picturesque little pub with an excellent French restaurant attached. The charcuterie was good. The lamb was a little overdone for my taste but it was still tender and the panzanella was lovely. All accompanied by massive bunches of rocket on top, which I could do without. The lemon curd was perfectly sharp and sweet against the rich lamb. Service suffered from a lack of staff in a busy restaurant and was therefore slow, but we didn't mind. The waiters and the manager were always pleasant and able to deal with our demanding four year old. This is a really good little restaurant with some great food and is a real find. Highly recommend it!

Visited for dinner booked relatively last minute via top table. Menu is less extensive than some but all executed beautifully. Service was very attentive - starters and main courses all delivered inside 45 minutes which was a little quicker than we would have liked but when we asked for a pause between main and dessert/cheese it was accommodated. Great insight on the wine list as well. Overall a 4.5 star dining experience.

It's been about a year since we last visited the Waggoners and there have been a few changes. Proprietor Laurent and his team are still as charming as ever but they have a new (English) head chef and the cooking has definitely gone up a notch. Our starter of scallops and rabbit and main of pork belly with lobster were beautifully executed and delicious. A shared cheese plate was large and varied. A good selection of wines by the glass, reasonably priced. We won't leave it a year till the next time!
