A word from The West House
Biddenden in Kent is home to a small, family-run restaurant. Housed in a 15th Century weaver's cottage, The West House Restaurant is one of only a few restaurants in Kent to hold a Michelin star.
The Good Food Guide said of this Kent restaurant... “Respondents continue in their enthusiasm for Graham Garrett’s cuisine: ‘great intensity of flavours, fabulous textures.’ as one reader put it."

Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed a pleasant evening at the West House, tried the taster menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was attentive but no hovering. Would recommend this restaurant to people who enjoy fine food with fine wines."

  • "We booked this as part of a gastronomique 3 lunches in Kent this being the first. Lovely restuarant with excellent friendly staff. Having decided on the set lunch my starter of hare was superb as was the wifes kipper rillette starter. The main courses of Lamb with pearl barley and fillet of Gurnard with Gnocchi and crayfish bisque were well presented and full of flavour. For desert the Cheesecake with its unusual presentation and the Rice with apple were a wonderway to finish the meal. We both can understand how The West House has been awarded 1 Michelin * as the food and presentation was outstanding and then to get the bill just made us realise that you do not have to pay exhorbitant prices for truly outstanding food."

  • "The West House has been a place that the customer service has been faultless and beyond the limits of the restaurant. We first ate here two years ago by randomly selecting it as a place to eat near Tenterden. Unbeknown to us the taxi service would not pick us up from this venue late at night. The owners kindly dropped us back to our hotel. They clearly remembered us this time and made a 2 year anniversary cake to add to our evening meal. This kind of service epitomises what this restaurant is about; good food, personalised touches to make your evening memorable and an ambience that you cannot find in many resturants you eat in. An absolutely amazing experience that I recommend to all. Thank-you for a fantastic memory. Gordon and Becks"

  • "We tried the meat eater's taster menu which was even without wine very expensive but gave us a treat on an otherwise gloomy October day. The beef was succulent and the potato cooked to perfection. The fish course was a treat for the eyes and the pear dessert was well balanced. The chocolate icecream desert was a little heavy BUT it was at the end of six courses! Treat yourself - you wont be disappointed."

  • "I booked this restaurant for my wife's 30th after learning it has a Michelin star. We were not disappointed, it was a midweek evening new so there were only a few tables occupied but the low key and friendly waiter/sommelier lifted the quiet atmosphere making it feel relaxing and intimate. The food was almost faultless, the menu changes regularly but game meats and fish featured heavily and did not disappoint. The suggested wine choice was excellent, complimenting the meat dishes we had chosen without breaking the bank. I highly recommend the restaurant, it is the best meal we have had in the area (we live in Tunbridge wells) and in my humble opinion certainly deserves its star."

  • "Really good dinner but I had 2 tiny pieces of crab shell in my main course. I mentioned this to the waiter he apologised but that was it. In restaurant this size with the husband as the chef and the wife front of house I would if expected one of them to say something or have something reduced from the bill. Not the response I would expect from a Michelin star restaurant. That said I would return."

  • "This is my 5th or 6th visit to this low key and unpretentious restaurant. The food is always imaginative and delicious and the service is excellent. You are presented with complimentary appetisers that melt in the mouth and help to prepare you for what lies ahead. These were a selection of savoury biscuits exploding with flavour and a dish of marinated olives. The starter and main course were gorgeous and the deserts mouth watering. Our friends were equally impressed and we had a lovely evening."

  • "We had their taster menu which had six courses and included items we would never have though of having but we were very pleasantly surprised. Everything beautifully cooked and precisely described by the staff. It could not have been better"

  • "The atmosphere of the Restaurant was relaxing and comfortable and the service was friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the beetroot particularly memorable. Should the opportunity arise we would certainly return."

  • "Quality and presentation of food amazing. Fantastic flavours and a good wine list."

  • "Great food and nice atomosphere, whilst not cheap still good value given the quality. Definitely would recommend for a spacial occasion or a nice treat."

  • "Booked evening meal here for my wife's birthday dinner - we had a lovely time and food was fantastic. The only down side was that since I was driving, I couldn't have the matched wines with the Tasting Menu ! We will be returning!"

  • "We used to go to the West House when we lived in the area. On an infrequent visit back to Kent, we booked again and weren't disappointed. We had a three - course menu for £40, incredible value. The food is innovative, beautifully presented and in great- sized portions. I had the venison, very tender, lovely rich sauce. No wonder the restaurant was full on the Friday night we went. The only slight irritation for myself and my husband was constantly being called 'guys' by the waiting staff.... But a very small complaint ! We would heartily recommend !"

  • "As usual the food at the West House was immaculate: a feast for the eye as well as the palate. It was the ideal place to take friends by way of a thank you before we move away from the area. That is our biggest regret: that we will be so far away that yet another visit to the West House is unlikely. However, you never know, we may get lucky!"
    dined on 24/09/2014
  • "The food was stunningly delicious. We had the 6 course taster menu with each one offering new delights from the haddock starter right the way through to the 'crunchie' dessert. I would not be able to identify one course as being more outstanding than any of the others, although the dessert completed the meal with the perfect combination of soft, crunch and sweetness. The service was attentive but not overly so with the correct amount of time between courses. We loved the additional touch of the warm home made bread served as a pre-starter with pork fat and olives."

  • "Haven't had the chance to eat at the West House for a while - the restaurant is looking lovely. Food is better than ever with a beautifully balanced tasting menu and perfectly matched wine pairings. Couldn't have asked for a better evening out. Our thanks to all working there."

  • "The West House is a beautiful restaurant. The building itself is a beautifully restored old house with oak beams, wooden floors and a log burner, giving a really nice atmosphere. The food is superb, beautifully cooked and presented, and of the highest quality. Service is lovely and friendly and you immediately feel relaxed and welcome. Highly recommended, especially for a special occasion."

  • "Verŷ disappointing for a Michelin 1 star restaurant. The Kedgeree was rather rich. The Duck breast was tough and unchewable and sent back. Diners at the next table complained about the quality of the Duck breast as well ! The Monkfish was overcooked ! However, the dessert and the excellent wine consoled us slightly. Definitely an experience not to be repeated taking into consideration that we had to pay for the Duck. After all the main course was send back unbeaten."

  • "This is as you would expect in terms of wonderful food and service."

  • "Graham's cooking is truly superb. We had the tasting menu and each course was a delight with subtle combinations and perfect presentation. The service as usual was informal but efficient. We love this restaurant."
    dined on 27/08/2014
  • "Food was outstandingly good. Thoroughly recommended. Although we were the only customers in the restaurant we did not feel uncomfortable and were made very welcome by the waiter. We have eaten in The French Laundry in California which was once named the best restaurant in the world but can honestly say that this meal was more enjoyable."
    dined on 27/08/2014
  • "Service was bit slow at the beginning but soon picked up. The food was fantastic, particularly the main courses, one of which was the lamb and the other the duck. Well worth the drive from London, ."

  • "Another great experience at the West House. We had the taster menu, which was outstanding. Service was great (if a tiny bit slow) and friendly. Great wine selection, all round pretty outstanding. But not your cheapest Sunday lunch!! Great for special occasions though."
    dined on 24/08/2014
  • "We went to The West house for a birthday lunch. There was a vegetarian 6 course tasting menu, which sounded so nice we opted for that, even though we are not vegetarians. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted sublime, and we didn't even miss the meat!! The service was relaxed and friendly and we were not rushed so each course was savoured and allowed to settle before the next. If you go to the west house and have the al a carte menu, which we have before, I would 100% recommend you save room for dessert which is always beautifully presented, cleverly thought about and a devine way to end a perfect meal. Overall I would recommend The West House to anybody looking for a well priced, friendly and delicious fine dining experience!"
    dined on 24/08/2014
  • "Not up to standard. The best part of the meal was the homemade bread and dripping at the start. Only two serving staff for around 30 diners, one of which was a somewhat elderly lady wearing flip-flops! Overall, not very good food, appalling value and very disappointing."
    dined on 22/08/2014
  • "This is not an restaurant to be enjoyed every day, unless you have deep pockets, but the food was superb - I had pigeon to start and cod fillet for main, and both were excellent. My wife had Romney Marsh lamb for her main and I've never tasted lamb so good. The carafe of wine was nice too - it's a pity the West House is so out in the sticks, as the combination of such a great wine list and having to drive home afterwards makes it sadly more difficult to enjoy. The service was discreet and polite, and the atmosphere wasn't stuffy at all. We were made to feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend it to others if they were celebrating something, and may well come back again ourselves one day !"
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "We had dinner at the West House on a Thursday in August and it was very good as always. The service for the degustation was slower than usual meaning we were having our last few courses while the restaurant was being packed up around us, which was a bit of a shame. It also made the £40 service charge seem a bit steep. But the food was still excellent and well worth the money."
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "Thursday lunch - food perfect - wine (from the 'wilfully obscure' section on the wine list) perfect - service perfect - coffee perfect - home made butter perfect. Would I recommend it ....... Let me think!!!!! The only food I've had that has compared in quality and seasonality was at Tom Aikens - we will definitely be going back."
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "Been to the West House a few times and I've not got a bad word to say about. The food is always fantastic and I always leave with a big smile on my face. For the standard of the food I think it's cheap too."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Our first visit to the West House. The food was excellent but we felt it lacked a bit of atmosphere. One of the serving staff was really good but the other was very average. Expected just a bit more after hearing the reviews."
    dined on 08/08/2014
  • "Dinner was excellent, a great way to spend my birthday . Proprietress was very attentive, and very friendly felt completely at ease and very welcome. Would definitely return."

  • "This an outstanding place to eat, really world class good, highly recommended."
    dined on 17/07/2014
  • "Lovely family run restaurant, serving first rate regional food with none of the pretensions usually associated with cooking of this quality. Graham Garret is an exceptionally talented cook. Lots of exposed beams and wiring in a very pretty town."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Excellent lunch. Took my elderly parents out for the day in the countryside. Thoroughly recommend the food, very fresh, beautifully presented and very good quality. Parking was easy as my parents cannot walk far."
    dined on 13/07/2014
  • "Perfect every time. Our firm favourite. The taster menu is simply delicious and fantastic value for money."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "The service was very good and the food was lovely. All in all a very enjoyable evening."

  • "Very welcoming and accommodated specific dietary requirements seamlessly. Friendly atmosphere and excellent food. An extremely pleasant dining experience."
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "A real gem, the food blew us away and we had a wonderful evening. Thoroughly recommend. The only thing we could possibly fault slightly was the service, which while excellently carried out, was sometimes a little slow as there was a demanding table of 8 doing the tasting menu next to us, but the staff were very accommodating and nevertheless we felt very well looked after. The food really was outstanding, and extremely good value. We shall be visiting again."

  • "Thank-you very much for a lovely meal and birthday cake for my partner's 40th Birthday. The food was excellent and all the individual flavours on each dish were delicious. I particularly loved the almond ice-cream! Nice relaxed atmosphere and good service too."
    dined on 01/07/2014
  • "The West House goes from strength to strenght. An outstanding meal in a great setting. The starter of pea cream, scallop, girolles and pancetta was outstanding (and I did not have to right it down to remember the ingredients)and the rabbit main course a tour de force. We will be back."
