A word from The West House
Biddenden in Kent is home to a small, family-run restaurant. Housed in a 15th Century weaver's cottage, The West House Restaurant is one of only a few restaurants in Kent to hold a Michelin star.
The Good Food Guide said of this Kent restaurant... “Respondents continue in their enthusiasm for Graham Garrett’s cuisine: ‘great intensity of flavours, fabulous textures.’ as one reader put it."

Diner Reviews
  • "Haven't had the chance to eat at the West House for a while - the restaurant is looking lovely. Food is better than ever with a beautifully balanced tasting menu and perfectly matched wine pairings. Couldn't have asked for a better evening out. Our thanks to all working there."
    dined on 20/09/2014
  • "The West House is a beautiful restaurant. The building itself is a beautifully restored old house with oak beams, wooden floors and a log burner, giving a really nice atmosphere. The food is superb, beautifully cooked and presented, and of the highest quality. Service is lovely and friendly and you immediately feel relaxed and welcome. Highly recommended, especially for a special occasion."

  • "Verŷ disappointing for a Michelin 1 star restaurant. The Kedgeree was rather rich. The Duck breast was tough and unchewable and sent back. Diners at the next table complained about the quality of the Duck breast as well ! The Monkfish was overcooked ! However, the dessert and the excellent wine consoled us slightly. Definitely an experience not to be repeated taking into consideration that we had to pay for the Duck. After all the main course was send back unbeaten."

  • "This is as you would expect in terms of wonderful food and service."

  • "Graham's cooking is truly superb. We had the tasting menu and each course was a delight with subtle combinations and perfect presentation. The service as usual was informal but efficient. We love this restaurant."

  • "Food was outstandingly good. Thoroughly recommended. Although we were the only customers in the restaurant we did not feel uncomfortable and were made very welcome by the waiter. We have eaten in The French Laundry in California which was once named the best restaurant in the world but can honestly say that this meal was more enjoyable."

  • "Service was bit slow at the beginning but soon picked up. The food was fantastic, particularly the main courses, one of which was the lamb and the other the duck. Well worth the drive from London, ."

  • "Another great experience at the West House. We had the taster menu, which was outstanding. Service was great (if a tiny bit slow) and friendly. Great wine selection, all round pretty outstanding. But not your cheapest Sunday lunch!! Great for special occasions though."

  • "We went to The West house for a birthday lunch. There was a vegetarian 6 course tasting menu, which sounded so nice we opted for that, even though we are not vegetarians. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted sublime, and we didn't even miss the meat!! The service was relaxed and friendly and we were not rushed so each course was savoured and allowed to settle before the next. If you go to the west house and have the al a carte menu, which we have before, I would 100% recommend you save room for dessert which is always beautifully presented, cleverly thought about and a devine way to end a perfect meal. Overall I would recommend The West House to anybody looking for a well priced, friendly and delicious fine dining experience!"

  • "Not up to standard. The best part of the meal was the homemade bread and dripping at the start. Only two serving staff for around 30 diners, one of which was a somewhat elderly lady wearing flip-flops! Overall, not very good food, appalling value and very disappointing."

  • "This is not an restaurant to be enjoyed every day, unless you have deep pockets, but the food was superb - I had pigeon to start and cod fillet for main, and both were excellent. My wife had Romney Marsh lamb for her main and I've never tasted lamb so good. The carafe of wine was nice too - it's a pity the West House is so out in the sticks, as the combination of such a great wine list and having to drive home afterwards makes it sadly more difficult to enjoy. The service was discreet and polite, and the atmosphere wasn't stuffy at all. We were made to feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend it to others if they were celebrating something, and may well come back again ourselves one day !"

  • "We had dinner at the West House on a Thursday in August and it was very good as always. The service for the degustation was slower than usual meaning we were having our last few courses while the restaurant was being packed up around us, which was a bit of a shame. It also made the £40 service charge seem a bit steep. But the food was still excellent and well worth the money."

  • "Thursday lunch - food perfect - wine (from the 'wilfully obscure' section on the wine list) perfect - service perfect - coffee perfect - home made butter perfect. Would I recommend it ....... Let me think!!!!! The only food I've had that has compared in quality and seasonality was at Tom Aikens - we will definitely be going back."

  • "Been to the West House a few times and I've not got a bad word to say about. The food is always fantastic and I always leave with a big smile on my face. For the standard of the food I think it's cheap too."

  • "Our first visit to the West House. The food was excellent but we felt it lacked a bit of atmosphere. One of the serving staff was really good but the other was very average. Expected just a bit more after hearing the reviews."

  • "Dinner was excellent, a great way to spend my birthday . Proprietress was very attentive, and very friendly felt completely at ease and very welcome. Would definitely return."

  • "This an outstanding place to eat, really world class good, highly recommended."

  • "Lovely family run restaurant, serving first rate regional food with none of the pretensions usually associated with cooking of this quality. Graham Garret is an exceptionally talented cook. Lots of exposed beams and wiring in a very pretty town."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Excellent lunch. Took my elderly parents out for the day in the countryside. Thoroughly recommend the food, very fresh, beautifully presented and very good quality. Parking was easy as my parents cannot walk far."

  • "Perfect every time. Our firm favourite. The taster menu is simply delicious and fantastic value for money."

  • "A real gem, the food blew us away and we had a wonderful evening. Thoroughly recommend. The only thing we could possibly fault slightly was the service, which while excellently carried out, was sometimes a little slow as there was a demanding table of 8 doing the tasting menu next to us, but the staff were very accommodating and nevertheless we felt very well looked after. The food really was outstanding, and extremely good value. We shall be visiting again."

  • "Thank-you very much for a lovely meal and birthday cake for my partner's 40th Birthday. The food was excellent and all the individual flavours on each dish were delicious. I particularly loved the almond ice-cream! Nice relaxed atmosphere and good service too."

  • "The West House goes from strength to strenght. An outstanding meal in a great setting. The starter of pea cream, scallop, girolles and pancetta was outstanding (and I did not have to right it down to remember the ingredients)and the rabbit main course a tour de force. We will be back."

  • "I booked this via the web site and my wife and I were delighted by all that the restaurant offered. Fantastic food with relaxed atmosphere. This will be a regular eating place from now on"

  • "My partner and I have never eastern at a Michelin star restaurant before - we were thrilled to find this gem with a £40 set price for 3 courses. It's informal country ambiance and unintimadting menu make a top quality culinary experience accessible to all."
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "The staff are friendly, efficient and welcoming, immediately you think you are going to enjoy yourself - and you will. The menu is diverse and not overlong. The cooking is first class and the wine list presented in an interesting way. Have the courage to try one of the more obscure bottles, they are not all wildly expensive and will take you to places you would not imagine."

  • "We recently took some firends from overseas to the West house and we had the most delightful time. The staff are always helpful and offer great advice ( we are becoming regulars) the foie gras starter was a big hit and spoken of continually for the next two days. No loud music, casual and smart. Thanks again"

  • "We had a very enjoyable meal with friends. The canapés were delicious. The service was good with just the right timing of the courses. The bread was warm and delicious. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Very good value."

  • "Excellent as always. The beet root cheesecake was wonderful, and the suckline pig was terrific. Our favourite was the rabbit which had a lovely smokey flavour."

  • "We have visited The West House 3 times now and been impressed each time. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, the food fantastic. 2 times we have chosen the Taster Menu which is 6 courses and pre-chosen wines, plus home-made breads and cheesy biscuits. The courses are well explained, look exceptional and taste devine, each of the wines compliments the course superbly. For a 'treat' or for a romantic evening or a night of simply superb food - this IS the place to go"

  • "We had a fantastic Saturday evening meal at The West House. The food was the star of the show - from the homemade cheese shortbread to the final mouthful of the lightest sponge I have ever tasted, the food was outstanding. The service was also very good, but the restaurant did lack a little atmosphere. That did no detract though from an incredible experience....I would highly recommend! "

  • "Great service, the waiting staff were very attentive and friendly. Compliments to the chef Graham, the food was amazing, both in taste and presentation. You all contributed to our wonderful anniversary weekend, thank you so much"

  • "While staying at Leeds Castle we wanted a romantic meal for two. The West House came up to all expectations. A warm and friendly atmosphere. The menu was just right to make it difficult to choose! The April additions to the wine list interesting and obviously given a great deal of thought. Starters:- poached egg with onion broth unusual but delicious, Brandade was just the right texture and exquisitely presented. Main course, we both had roast suckling pig which just melted in the mouth. Milk and honey mousse beautifully light. The selection of local cheeses ended a truly memorable meal. Just wish we didn't live 290 miles away. "

  • "We go to the West House several times a year. We always receive a warm welcome and enjoy fantastic food in a lovely environment. This is a success story and long may it continue"

  • "We live in a nearby village and usually do our eating out in London. But now we've found this place we will be back time and again. The food is divine and the venue is lovely - not at all pretentious. The service was very relaxed and casual, but if you asked questions the level of knowledge of the waiter was outstanding. I loved the small touches, like the pouch of heated cherry stones to keep the bread warm on the table. Amazing value during the week also."
    dined on 16/04/2014
  • "We took friends here for an evening meal. We had beetroot, quail and egg n bacon for our starters. My husband wasn't keen on the egg n bacon but everyone else thought theirs was delicious. For mains we had brill, cod, featherblade beef and pig. Everything was beautifully presented and had so much flavour. The desserts were equally as good. We chose the cheese, rhubarb and chocolate mousse. The portions were on the small side so we certainly weren't stuffed after 3 courses. The only negative thing I have to say is that drinks service was a bit slow. Will definitely be going back."
