Diner Reviews
  • "The restaurant is hidden away downstairs in a hotel that is hidden away in the back streets of St James. Presumably this is the reason it is quiet as the food and service are both excellent and compare well with other restaurants in the area. The extras turn a 3 course menu into something more special. The a la carte menu is quite short, something I find reassuring, especially in a small restaurant. We found all the dishes we had lovely, well prepared with excellent ingredients. The apple desert was a particular highlight. Certainly we will look to return."

  • "This was fabulous, Friday lunch slightly spoilt by the table next door who had their i-pad continually playing peppa pig for their young son who was not even watching it. I was surprised that this was allowed as I would never put something so loud on for my children in any restaurant let alone one that is so stylish and elegant, it is a grown up location, not a "family restaurant' but I think the staff did not really know what to do. However the food and service were wonderful and the £25 menu for two courses and coffee excellent value. A hidden gem."

  • "5 friends and myself had a lovely dinner on a weekday evening to celebrate a birthday. The food from a broad ranging menu was quite outstanding in creativity, taste and presentation and as a great bonus we paid only £48 each for 3 courses and a glass of Prosecco on arrival. On top of that, an amuse bouche, a sorbet AND petite fours came free! Wine from £18 a bottle. There were few other diners but we didn't care. We were there to talk to each other and didn't need company. The service was impeccable - relaxed, graceful and informative. On the basis of our experience, we all thought the place should be packed! We'll be back..."

  • "We are very happy to recommend this restaurant to our friends. The menu was rather small but well balanced for choice. They were not only delicious but visually beautiful!"

  • "We wanted somewhere quiet, peaceful, elegant, and has a good chef, to meet up with an old friend, and it was perfect on all counts! This lovely located Hotel in a small courtyard near St James' Palace could not be faulted. From the friendly atmosphere and staff in the Hotel, to the amazingly attentive Maître 'D in the restaurant the service was exemplary, and only exceeded by the exquisite food prepared by a Michelin Starred chef. Yes it's quite expensive, but worth every penny and every minute spent in the luxury of the restaurant. I cannot wait to find an excuse to return."

  • "Dined at lunch time. The restaurant was quiet but not without atmosphere. The staff were attentive and friendly and service was paced just right. We thought the price was very good considering the location and the quality of the food. The portion size was on the small side but suited us perfectly and the meal ended with a huge pot of coffee and home made sweets all included. We would definitely eat here again."

  • "Excellent 3 course meal with pre course parts added in. Its the equivalent of a michelin star meal!"

  • "I cannot believe how quiet it was when we were there. I had booked based on previous reviews and it did not disappoint. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. All of the courses were beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. We ended up staying for almost 3 hours as we were enjoying the relaxed atmosphere so much. It is tucked away in the Duke's Hotel in an intimate dining room which has a lovely feel to it. I highly recommend this place if you wanted to go somewhere for a special occasion. I will definitely be going back."

  • "Five of us met in London for a reunion, some coming up from Bath, and deepest Suffolk, others from the home counties. We trained together as therapists 40 years ago and have kept in touch after 21 years gap in some instances. It was a marvellous occasion. The restaurant is wonderful. The service was fanttastic-helpful but not intrusive and the staff melted away and left us to talk on undisturbed which we really, really appreciated. Their sensitivity, politeness and helpfulness must be commended. Add to this the beautiful surroundings and the wonderful, top quality food, beautifully presented, and we were really spoilt. Thank you to ALL who made it a wonderful experience. There was a general vote at the end to repeat the occasion if we could!"

  • "We had incredible food, sensational service and elegant ambiance."
    dined on 20/02/2014
  • "Calm and peaceful atmosphere, away from the crowds - only 3 tables taken at lunchtime. Service was Michelin standard, unobtrusive but welcoming and attentive. The menu doesn't offer a huge variety but had something to suit all tastes and was supplemented by a few additions. Food was excellent mainly English style with a modern light twist which was attractively presented - though perhaps at the expense of substance. The wine list was extensive with a lot of good choices."

  • "Great venue tucked away near St James, very helpful and polite staff without being over-fussy. food beautifully presented and delicious. Good wine list. Few other patrons so made it wasy to talk business without being overheard in a relaxed setting."
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "The veal entree was quite good and the gratuitous bread was excellent. The latter was so good, so freshly made, with the perfect softness inside and crunch on the outside that the maitre d/server offered us another round. Which brings to mind the service which was impeccable and just the right amount attentiveness. Unfortunately that's where the good end and where the bad began. The Ham Hock very dense and not salted enough; the sea bass was too fishy and the two little pieces of oxtail on the same plate were way too tough. We like the rubharb tart and sorbet ok enough - the pastry was nice but the filling too tart. We paid 78 pounds for the privilege, expensive for the excellent bread and service since we didn't like the rest."
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "Very enjoyable dinner. Food was interesting and good standard of cooking, very well presented. The choice of dishes was from the regular menu without restriction, apart from the tasting menu, which was a bonus. Dining room was quite quiet, but it was a Tuesday evening. As we went with friends it hardly mattered. The deal included a bottle of wine for the table which made it reasonably good value."

  • "The staff is welcoming, the food is amazing! The experience was just incredible! Loved every moment of it!"
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "We had the Top Table lunch. It was excellent. Despite dreadful weather, and an empty retaurant for our late (1:30) lunch, the staff were attentive and helpful. A wonderful, creatively prepared meal. We will come again."
    dined on 12/02/2014
  • "We had the taster menu and it was great! The 6/7 courses that came out were each perfectly cooked and were (for lack of a better word) tasty. The staff were attentive and friendly but we were pretty much the only people in there, which although this was not an issue for us it meant it was deathly quiet."
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "Booked this for a semi- business lunch with a friend. We were eating quite late so can't say how busy this restaurant gets but there were only 3 other tables taken. The waiters were attentive without interrupting which often happens when the dining room isn't busy. We ordered from the set menu which doesn't give a huge variety but had something to suit all tastes and was supplemented by additions from the chef. The food was well cooked mainly English style with a modern light twist which was attractively presented - prompting me to have an unusual three courses."

  • "I have never had a bad, or even less than perfect, meal at Thirty Six. It is my restaurant of choice, and my tastebuds are in total agreement. Yes, it appears pricey, but once you consider the amuse bouche and the canapés and the delicious homemade breads, as well as the impeccable service, the relaxed ambience, and the fact that it is a meal you will never forget, then suddenly it's perfectly reasonable. This restaurant is Michelin standard and I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who appreciates fresh food and taste sensations."
    dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Friday 7th Feb was my second visit. I met up with a friend, who I have not seen for a while. We had a wonderful time. The meal, service and ambience was outstanding. I cannot wait until my next visit on 15th Feb! The care given regarding my severe nut allergy was exceptional - I had a dessert for the first time since August 2012. Many, many thanks."

  • "My family and I are foodies and we have always like fine dining and trying new places. The Duke's hotel was rather difficult to get to and we got lost several times in order to find it. I do not suggest using Google maps. Once we have arrived, it was extremely quiet and we were only a table of 3 for the Friday night. The menu is extremely limited, but the chef was very considerate of my dietary requirements and edited the tasting menu for myself. The food, was good, but it was nothing special and I felt that they all followed the same taste/theme - a lot of truffle and creamy. The tasting menu was £75 which is standard in London, however, I felt I have had better elsewhere. Tried once, it was good but would not go back again."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "Went for a romantic meal/birthday, and found the ambience lacking. Very few other customers there, and when some did arrive they were businessmen, loudly discussing business. Impeccable service and excellent food more than made up for this. (and free birthday desert). Would go again to see if the lack of atmosphere was a one off."
    dined on 29/04/2013
  • "Thirty Six offers an excellent quality and value fixed price menu with friendly service. The only down side is that there is little atmosphere. Restaurant has a feel of being tucked along a corridor in basement. Hotel also hard to find."
    dined on 29/01/2014
  • "I don't know whether it was because it was quiet, but the staff really went to town on this one - it was listed as a three course meal special offer but they really went to town on it - probably 7 courses after the amuse bouche."
    dined on 08/08/2013
  • "Whenever my parents are visiting London I am trying to take them to Thirty Six for lunch as it's one of their favourites. The food choices are consistently creative and delicious and the service is very attentive, too. The toptable offer is great value for a top meal, I couldn't recommend it more!"
    dined on 28/01/2014
  • "My Husband & I had dinner at Thirty Six, Dukes last week - the menu is very good value, good food we really enjoyed but the service was quite slow and the restaurant is a hotel restaurant not really a popular dining spot - it has a residents feel about it - we did enjoy ourselves but wouldn't rush back."
    dined on 23/01/2014
  • "Superb taster menu with wines that perfectly complimented each course. Service was also excellent."
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "After an overcooked steak and an uncomfortable atmosphere in a basement dining room, the whole experience was overpriced and severely disappointing."
    dined on 09/11/2013
  • "We had an amazing meal at Nigel Mendham's restaurant in London. The the food was fantastic with many nice touches. The only shame was not enough people seem to dine there so it was a bit quiet. Nevertheless, we had excellent dining experience. We will go definitely go there again.Highly recommended"

  • "I very much enjoyed both the warm hospitality extended by the Thirty Six team as well as the delicious food during a business lunch at Dukes last week and will certainly be back in the near future."
    dined on 16/01/2014
  • "Once againThirty Six excelled and provided a memorable lunchtime. The food tastes as good as it looks, and it looks amazing."
    dined on 14/01/2014
  • "The restaurant was quite quiet for a Saturday evening - we were there about 2 hours from 7pm & it was only one third full so there was no atmosphere. The food was OK but not spectacular for a Mitchelin starred restaurant. Service was good but overall, it isn't cheap. There are certainly way better dining experiences at this price level. We started with a bottle of Champagne in the Dukes Cocktail Bar & the cheapest available was £90 inc tip so it was an expensive start to a disappointing meal"
    dined on 11/01/2014
  • "This restaurant hidden away in the far corner of Duke's hotel is a perfect venue for romance and privacy. Can't fault the food or the service. Get there early to you can enjoy an aperitif in their Champagne lounge immediately next door to the restaurant."

  • "My partner and I discovered this gem for our first anniversary in 2012. Since we have returned for every special occasion. It has been brilliant every time - the service, food and ambiance. Thank you Thirty Six."

  • "Dukes was its usual best - good food and nice selection of canapés. Great value with Top Table deal"
    dined on 30/12/2013
  • "Outstanding meal full of style - elegance - class and surprises. Excellent quality, pace of serving, full of surprises. I liked the music as well - highly recomment it. Very British experience"

  • "Thirty Six is the small restaurant at Dukes Hotel, tucked away in St James where you can believe you are stepping back in time. My partner and I dined on a Monday evening a few weeks before Christmas and we practically had the room to ourselves. This was a little disconcerting at first, but the service we received was friendly and faultless. The a la carte menu was generous - and we could choose any bottle of wine from an extensive list. My starter of pork textures was divine, and my main of John Dory was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Dessert was from a selection of 5 and I opted for apple presented in various ways and was delightful. With complimentary coffees, amuse bouch and chocolates, we left feeling truly satisfied."
    dined on 09/12/2013
  • "Nice spot but not very well patronised. And even though the place was nearly empty, the service was slowish. Still, good value for money and decent well presented food."
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "Took 2 1/2 hours for a 3 course meal. Appetizer (pork sampler) was very good. Second, t-bone, was uneventful and over-cooked (asked for it medium rare came medium well). Too hungry and tired to send back. Cheese platter very nice. Interesting, but very limited selection of wines by the glass. Restaurant has no ambiance - but that was the least of the issues."
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "a hidden little Michelin start restaurant provides fine dining to anyone's liking. While it is rather small, and hence may appeal to those who wish for some quiet private dinner, the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. The food is beautifully presented and delicious - the tasting menu is full of little surprises. The wine selection is decent, and had my favourtie torrontes white wine. Overall it's a nice place with welcoming, if a little slow, service. But exepct to pay fine dining bill - even with toptable offer, which included wine, a dinner for 2 came to £150."
