Diner Reviews
  • "Great atmosphere and tasty interesting dishes. Wheelchair access was simple and staff very accommodating. Fantastic views over Princes Street Gardens. Service a bit slow, but understandable since restaurant was very busy. Great place for a special lunch."

  • "Ordered the Sunday roast waited quite a long time for the food to come which was cold. When I complained that the food was cold the waitress didn't understand. I requested 3 times for some hot gravy which after 10mins a very small bowl was placed on table, I then explained to this waiter that the food was cold. He said that the food comes straight out from kitchen and he would look into this. He didn't come back to tell us his findings. The food would have been perfect if hot but as all 3 of our meals were cold we were very disappointed and can't recommend."

  • "The combination of the art exibition upstairs and the beconing lunch table downstairs makes for a package appealing to all the senses. The friendliness of the staff is also a most pleasant experience and makes one feel really welcome."

  • "Went to the Contini ristorante on George Street for an Italian lunch excellent in every way. Lunch at the Contini Scottish Cafe and Restaurant was a different kettle of fish. Food lukewarm and lack-luster, staff cheerfully helpful but inefficient nevertheless, table top sticky, crowded atmosphere played against rather than for the venue's ambience. Will not go again."

  • "Very nice setting, lovely menu and family friendly. Reservation service very efficient too. Staff delightful, but overstretched when it got busy and therefore slow to clear and bring desserts. Overall good, but if you were pressed to complete the meal you'd be frustrated."

  • "I love the scottish cafe. The food is excellent and the location perfect. I like to go here mainly for breakfast or brunch on a day trip to Edinburgh"

  • "It took over an hour to receive our main dishes. We had reservations and were seated immediately."

  • "An ideal venue for a relaxed lunch to catch up with an old friend on our arrival at Waverley Station. Our table was positioned so that we could converse in comfort and the harpist added to a restful ambience. The food was beautifully presented and the service unhurried. The cod was particularly delicious although the tasty broth served with it was a little on the cool side. However the day was rather hot, so it hardly mattered. Wine sold by the carafe was an inspired addition to the wine list for a lunchtime special occasion. Our visit to the Edinburgh Festival was off to a great start!"

  • "I've been to the Scottish Cafe several times and have always had a great experience - the food is wonderful and the location is lovely. However, this time (Sunday morning, not very busy at all), the service was worse than usual. Our order wasn't written down, so the waiter had to come back and check one of the choices; it took a long time for our food to arrive, and when it did, one of the three meals was brought much later than the others; we had to request butter for toast, which wasn't brought until a second time of asking (by which time the toast was cold); and we couldn't get the waiting staff's attention to get the bill at the end, despite being right next to the waiter station. Lovely food, let down by the service on this occasion."

  • "Although the food was nice, if unexceptional, the service was dreadful. After along wait, the waitress told us our main courses were ready, but she had forgotten to put our starters order in, we could have those after our main courses! She was most put out when we suggested this was not acceptable, and repeated that our main courses were ready and could not be kept. When we suggested this was hardly our fault, we then waited 35mins for the starters, then 40 mins for our main courses. The side dish i had ordered was cold; waitress just shrugged! It was not deducted from bill, and no apology for any of the extraordinary delay. This was a special event for the friend i was entertaining, and frankly was nothing short of a fiasco."

  • "Good Food but we felt service was below par and a little chaotic e.g. We were only given the Sunday lunch options after most of the party had already ordered their meals. Our requested hot water to heat baby food never arrived either. It also took a long time to clear plates between courses - although our waitress did apologise for this. I know it was very busy which may help explain service issues somewhat and the quality of food did go along way to making up for it. We will return despite the moans and hopefully things will have improved next time."

  • "I have been many times and experienced good food And service. This time however the service was poor There was a definite staff shortage and it was def felt At our table.... Forgotten drinks, forgotten crayons and Dirty plates left on table. Everyone's food was good Except mine... Burnt buttery. I will go back but not at a busy time."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "We had a fantastic breakfast/brunch here. The fruit/yoghurt/oats combination was lovely, but the breakfast baps were the truly exceptional part of the experience. Everything about them was perfectly delicious - the bap itself, the bacon, haggis and egg - you could taste it all. The tea was lovely too and the staff were very helpful and polite."

  • "Varied choice on menu. Very well sourced ingredients. Standard of cooking was high.Presentation was good.Service was friendly and polite."

  • "Meeting with friends to the sounds of amazing live harp music and a view of Princes Street Gardens. Best way to spend a Sunday afternoon in March."

  • "Have had great meals here - and was looking forward to another. V disappointed. Ordered spelt risotto and my fellow diner chose Cullen skink. Both of these dishes far too creamy - and not In a good way . Cullen skink texture of porridge and risotto Creamy but not with the pleasant starchiness of rice. Both seemed as thought the ingredients bound Together by some 'introduced' cream sauce. Not very Nice to eat. Service good."

  • "Agreeable ambience, good view and excellent service. Imaginative menu with fresh local ingredients."

  • "We arrived in Edinburgh by train and so the gallery cafe is a pleasant stroll along Princes Street. Great that you can book a table throughout the day. We had the mutton stew which was very tasty. The brownie was delicious as well. Friendly efficient service added to the experience."

  • "Interesting menu giving options for light lunch, sharing platters or main meals- all excellent Scottish food, well presented. Thank goodness for a quality well located restaurent with a flexible choice of dishes to showcase what good food Scotland can provide. A good choice for locals and tourists alike."

  • "Had a lovely lunch with 2 girlfriends on a catchup after the xmas/new year holidays. Food very tasty, service very good, window seat as requested and set meal of good value. Good place to eat and catch up on a wet Edinburgh day."

  • "Struggled (but managed!) to finish The Mound platter between us. Delicious and loads of it."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "We had lunch. We were given a window table which I'd asked for in my booking, the staff were very friendly and attentive. Suggestions were made for alternatives when particular choices were not available eg wine and were good suggestions. We were not hurried out. The waiting times for courses were not too long. The food was as described in the menu and was tasty and well cooked. We were catered for with care and pleasingly catered to. We left feeling satisfied on all levels."
    dined on 13/01/2014
  • "We brought 2friends from Yorkshire and they were most impressed with the quality of service and food. Thank you for an enjoyable experience!"

  • "This should be showcase restaurant. Brilliant location. Well appointed in all respects. But... Service was only just about OK: absolutely no "sparkle". Table had not been cleaned properly. ordered tap water and glasses of wine. Tap water was just one glass full: why not provide jug/carafe? No bread. Main course of beef casserole was a rather small portion and not as hot as it could be. For the price it should be much better."
    dined on 07/01/2014
  • "Took family party here on 2nd jan . 8 of us - 3 generations. Good ambience and nicely met. Excellent for groups with kids. Service fine too. I always think it a little dear for what it is but the location and roominess compensate."
    dined on 02/01/2014
  • "Been to the Scottish Cafe and Restaurant a few times and it is always a reliable place to go close to the old amd new town. This time we were there when the Christmas market was on and having a window seat was a great added bonus. We ended up not consuming a full afternoon tea but there was no pressure from the staff. Service and food quality was good. The oversll ambience of the place is not the greatest though...a bit too soulless and unimaginative"

  • "It was the second time I had been to the Scottish Cafe and Restaurant at the National Gallery of Edinburgh, but it was the first time I had booked, and it just took the stress out of finding a place to eat on my birthday. It was lovely just walking in and being led to our seat. The service was quick and the staff pleasant. We had a good seat and although it was very busy, there was a quiet air of busy-ness that was un-intrusive. The food was very good and I really enjoyed the experience."
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "We had an excellent high tea. The fish and chips with pea puree was superb - very fresh fish, lovely chips and all served with home made tartar sauce and lovely fresh bread. The cake selection was very good, and the chocolate brownies were to die for. We loved hearing the harpist playing live and the service was excellent with really friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed our tea so much, we returned 2 days later and were warmly welcomed like old friends! I don't think you could get a better 'Scottish high tea' anywhere in Scotland"
    dined on 15/12/2013
  • "Supposed to be vintage afternoon tea, but no table cloths on the table and tea was served in white cups and sandwiches and cakes were served in white stands which were definately not vintage. Service was slow and sluggish (although it was very busy). Not good value for money, we have had much better afternoon tea's in other places for much the same price we paid here. Food and drink definately over priced and the service was rubbish. The sandwiches and cake were nice but the overall experience was extremely disappointing. Guess what I am trying to say is that it was a basic afternoon tea and should not be advertised as vintage as it does not match expectation. Overall vist was disappointing and the bill was a bit sore."

  • "My second visit to this restaurant, and it lived up to the excellent first trip. Perfect, central location, with huge windows overlooking Princes St gardens. Delicious varied menu, friendly and helpful staff, and the quality of the food was good. I'd recommend this highly to art lovers, shoppers, families - anyone who needs an excuse for a good meal in the heart of Edinburgh."

  • "excellent lamb roast, staff knew where this was sourced from (Shetland) and were friendly and professional"
    dined on 17/11/2013
  • "Excellent choices in menu which should suit all tastes and dietary needs. Food was very good value but take care with choosing a glass of wine. That can double the cost of your food choice. Coffee is also expensive. Ambience, service and situation in Edinburgh could not be bettered."
    dined on 13/11/2013
  • "The Scottish Restaurant has a good situation and we had a nice window table, the first course was good but the main course of 'Monkfish with mussels' had very little monkfish and was nearly all mussels in a creamy onion soup with a silice of bread. Very dissappointing."
    dined on 27/10/2013
  • "Had lunch with the family...various dishes..all well cooked and tasty..love it that they use Scottish foods...service friendly if not local...but can't be faulted .. view of autumnal trees outside just lovely Looking forward to my next visit."
