A word from Watatsumi
The hidden pearl of Trafalgar square with a fantastic 'raw bar', elegant restaurant and stylish cocktail bar plus a range of menus, from A'la carte to the highly affordable lunch Bento boxes, there’s something for all tastes and budgets. Situated in London’s west end, Trafalgar square, our opulent, high-ceilinged, marble-pillared restaurant is a stunning room and provides an elegant backdrop to Watatsumi's expertly executed Japanese dishes that marry bold new recipes with contemporary flavours.
Signature dishes include our Watatsumi crispy baby calamari; pan fried sea bass with homemade shisho butter, US grain fed beef in spicy miso and Wagyu Beef. The very best sushi and sashimi at Watatsumi deserve to be mentioned as well, being perhaps the most fundamentalist raw dishes in Japanese cuisine.

Toptable you messed up big time. The ratings above are for you not for the restaurant as I couldn't submit my review without rating the above. 3 hours before my reservation I get a phone call to tell me that this restaurant doesn't exist. I am shocked.

Watatsumi is currently closed for refurb, but I was still able to book a table using Toptable, only to turn up and the whole place be in darkness with a sign in the window saying it will be closed for a month (no dates on when it will re-open). I am really disappointed with Toptable for allowing this to happen, and also with Watatsumi as their website also didnt refer to a closure when it checked it the same day, and even when I was stood outside the door wondering if I had missed the memo! On a previous visit the place was lovely, food brilliant and service great so I gave the stars for my previous visit, not this occasion. I hope it reopens soon, and toptable have their info correct in fufure.

the place was closed! for refurbishment? why didn't toptable know? why did you allow us to book a table for a restaurant that wasn't there? are you completely useless? what is the point of using a service that is completely unreliable?

We decided to take advantage of the Top table offer to enjoy some very good black cod and sushi. Having been at Watatsumi once before, I would confirm that the quality of the food remains consistent and high. I am a bit less convinced about the service and the ambience, however.

The toptable offer made the meal at watatsumi good value. The food seemed very fresh and was tasty. The 16-piece dish was a great selection of sashimi and sushi. The staff were very attentive although shame one's English wasn't great. The decor was very classy.

We chose Watatsumi based on its location close to the theater. We really didn't know anything about the restaurant beforehand. We were pleasantly surprised had just how good it was! We made a reservation and were seated promptly. The food was delicious and I'm not a huge fan of Japanese. Everything was fresh with great presentation. The restaurant is modern but set in an old building, just beautiful!! Overall it was a fun evening with great food and drinks. For London it was a good value. We'd definitely go again next time we're in London.

We went to watatsumi on Saturday night for a catch up with friends. As always the food was tasty, especially my favourite - Volcano sushi. The ambience was very quiet, which I expected so didn't mind too much. Came to just under £100 for three of us including a bottle of wine and service charge (no mains or dessert, only sushi) - so on the expensive side in my opinion. Watatsumi is a good place to go if you're not looking for a bargain or a buzzing atmosphere - its really good for a quiet catch up or a business lunch. Considering the location and the quality of food, I'm always quite surprised that this place is not more busy.

The restaurant itself is nicely presented and clean. We arrived for a pre-theatre dinner and so the restaurant was completely empty initially, which is always disconcerting, but filled up later. The service was attentive without being too conspicuous, but the printed menus were very tatty and stained, which was less than impressive. Nevertheless the sushi, udon etc were perfectly cooked and the wasabi was the freshest I've tasted outside Japan. I'd go there again.

Nice restaurant but sadly too empty, which took away from the atmosphere. In terms of Japanese food, although we werent expecting Nobu, it was not even as good as some of the food i have had from Itsu. Some extensive dishes, but on arrival were quite plain and just not that impressive.

How disappointing was this for my Birthday?! I read some nice reviews on this place so I decided to try it. The place is quite nice and quiet, maybe a little too quiet. Service was so slow! I think there was only ONE main waitress. Took so long just to take our drinks order. Starters came within reasonable time and was only ok. The mains came about 45 mins later! There was only TWO other tables of fours. I have been eating in Japanese restaurants around the world for the last 20 years and for very average food this is definitely one of the most overpriced places. Will definitely not come back here!!

Been a few times before for lunch and enjoyed it but dinner was dreadful. As usual it's quiet + there's no atmosphere. Despite the lack of clients service was very slow. There are no Japanese people serving or apparently working in this restaurant and this does not help one's opinion of the ambiance of the place. The general manager or head waiter seems to find it hard to be cheerful and our waitress needed to get a stronger deodorant - that particular smell every so often was disconcerting. Meanwhile once the sushi arrived there was a hurried and unclear explanation of the different pieces. Finally the sushi was served at above room temperature.

Probably the best Japanese restaurant in London: excellent food, beautifully presented, courteous unobtrusive service. This place is a well-kept secret _ it is a shame that more people don't go, although that too has its advantages in ensuring a peaceful, quiet and relaxed environment.

We had a 22 piece platter between 2 at Watatsumi. It was melt in the mouth sushi. We were ready for more and ordered a 10 piece Sashami. The waitress said it will be pieces of what the Chef selects. We asked if the waitress to ask the Chef if we could have more of a salmon and tuna selection. To our delight he gave us a selection of only salmon and tuna which was again melt in ur mouth deliciousness. I love sushi, I must admit that it's a bit pricey for the portions you get but if you want good sushi and you are willing to pay a little extra then I recommend Watatsumi.

Watatsumi is a hidden gem just off Trafalgar Square. Food to match or even surpass Nobu, but easy to get a table at because few people seem to know about it. Awesome food, great service, not cheap but we got what we paid for and the ambience would have been 5 stars if only it were busier. Go there, before you can't get it!

The veg tempura was nice, and the quality of sushi and sashimi was good, the dishes all looked great except the platter which was very plainly and simply presented. The location is nice, atmosphere is very quiet - so recommend for more intimate dining. The platter (45gbp) which is recommended for 2 people is not enough food for two, my husband ate it alone and could have eaten more - to be fair he can easily eat 30-40 pieces!. The price was high considering the size of portions, but we are used to eating Sushi on the continent where the portions are much bigger, so perhaps this is 'normal' for London. It was nice to find somewhere to eat Japanese food in a 'restaurant' setting for a special occassion, rather than a bar/casual dining.

First class food let down by poor and unfriendly service. The Japanese waitress serving us was very friendly and polite, although she did make a few mistakes with orders (like coming to tell us almost 40 minutes after we had ordered a particular dish that the kitchen were all out, and it would not be coming). However, the food that did come was outstanding, and some of the best Japanese we've had in London. What really let the experience down was the amazingly unfriendly and cold reception by the Plaid-shirt-wearing manageress, and the surly faced receptionist. If I owned this restaurant, I would be mortified that the exceptional food is let down by poor, unwelcoming, and incompetent service.

This was our first visit to Watatsumi. The interior of the restaurant is very impressive, possibly even more imposing than one would expect. Our food was very good/excellent and the wine list is extensive. As relative newcomers to Japanese cookery, we would probably have welcomed a little more in the way of initial guidance as to the appropriate number of dishes to order. Service was also slightly slow even if very friendly. We enjoyed our meal and may well return at some point in the future.

The tasting menu at £49 is good value, in our case maybe served to fast 1 course after the other without a rest in between. Wide range of prices depending on what you order, so suitable for anything from special occasions to a convenient pit-stop. Incredibly handy location for anyone going to and from Charing Cross.
