A city centre restaurant with a city centre buzz. In the heart of Newcastle's Quayside, 21 has an excitement and warmth all of its own. Smart but not stuffy, sleek but not pretentious, fun but not gimmicky - It's about eating good food in comfortably stylish surroundings.

21's food is big on flavour, short on fussiness. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are treated with flair and passion. classic bistro dishes, a little comfort food and still room for pudding. 21 is famous for welcoming guests with excellent value and warm hospitality.

Haven’t been for a while & won’t be going back in a hurry.
Suitably underwhelming from start to finish. Considering it’s supposed to be the jewel in Newcastle’s culinary crown we were astounded by the blandness of the service, food & ambience.
A disappointing birthday visit.
Go to Marco Pierre White ....better on all fronts.

First time at 21 so let's start with positives. Bar area is great, great selection, very friendly staff. Main course (Lemon Sole) excellent, as was desert (Crème Brule) - liked the idea of wine by the carafe as well. Negative - the starter was quite frankly a rip-off (Foie Gras). It was literally the size of a thumb nail and for £18 this was poor, in fact very poor.

Eaten here numerous times - full a la Carter menu is considerably better than reduced Sunday menu - however, that is reflected in reduced fixed price Sunday menu. Restaurant has a wonderful feel and has been busy on every visit. 21 is a high end restaurant and staff act accordingly - if not a little too formal. The Sunday menu is average tbf but good value. If you want the full 21 experience, try the full menu on a Friday or Saturday night. 21 has a quality feel from the top end decor and cleanliness through to the fine food and choice - probably the best restaurant in Newcastle (including house of tides).

I invited 7 of my close friends to join me for a special anniversary lunch. The service was excellent but relaxed. It didn’t interfere with our conversations! The food taken from the table d’hote menu was very good and the choice was wide and varied to suit everyone’s tastes. The wine was very good and reasonably priced. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch and I could relax too knowing that they were all being looked after very well. Thank you to everyone.

Had a meal here for our anniversary and it didn't disappoint. Food is excellent but check out the menu when you book as its not that extensive and maybe not to everyone's taste. Wine list is very good with some unusual bottles on offer. Will go again.

I adore 21, the food, the decor, service and ambience but the cooking was not up to scratch on this occasion although the produce was excellent.

The level of service is really good and friendly which fits the type of restaurant very well and gives it a nice atmosphere. The food is of a high quality level which comes with a price however it's definitely worth it. Very happy to have discovered a restaurant where the quality of the food actually is more important than the amount of alcoholic drinks consumed by the customer which is a rarity compared to most Newcastle central area restaurants.

Excellent in every way. I had venison followed by chocolate and caramel shuffle - truly delicious. My partner had seafood cocktail which was enormous and then duck which is always very good.

Our meal was superb. When our starter was late in being served we were given a complimentary glass of fizz. That is what I call customer satisfaction

we had a lovely meal on Sunday evening. Our waiter was a young Italian man who was most helpful and gave us good recommendations on the menu. He allowed us to sample wine before purchasing a bottle which was a lovely touch. Food was lovely, we all enjoyed what we had.

Mixed Bag

I asked how Asparagus Mimosa was served as I don’t like fresh asparagus with sauce. I was told it was simply presented w some crumbled boiled egg. In fact it was drizzled with a mayonnaise- like sauce, with mustard or horseradish in it - acrid / horrid!!

We were seated on the banquette at rear of the room. I literally waved my arms above my head on and off for 20mins in an effort to get some attention and order a drink.

When staff did serve us they were very friendly. Being noticed however took some effort - and there were not many tables being served.

As a minimum, it would be reasonable to expect a member of the waiting staff to be dedicated to our table who pays attention. Water wasn’t replenished without asking.

The main courses - haddock and sirloin - were delicious. I asked for artichokes although not part of my dish and these were added without fuss.

The desserts were somewhat disappointing. Strawberry and whites chocolate tart had an inedible lump as a base. The delice was miniscule : 6 dots of créme between delicate layers. Pretty but somewhat ungenerous. Coffee was good.

Have to say that we were very impressed with our whole experience whilst celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary.

We loved the food and exceptional ‘professional service’.

Will certainly spread the word to our friends and neighbours in Hexham!

our respective meat dishes, beef shoulder and fillet, were tasty but very dry, to the extent that we could not finish them. the grandly described seafood cocktail was little more than bits of seafood covered in a cloying sauce on top of shredded greenery, reminiscent of the archetypal prawn cocktail from decades past.

definitely not as good dining as it used to be , and not good enough to warrant a return

The food and service are both excellent. The restaurant combines a serious menu and very smart traditional dining room with an unstuffy atmosphere. The service is very efficient without being intrusive. The menu is extensive with quite a few classics like cheese soufflé, calves liver, sole meunière and lemon posset as well as some more modern British dishes. It isn't cheap but represents good value for the high standards.
