21's food is big on flavour, short on fussiness. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are treated with flair and passion. classic bistro dishes, a little comfort food and still room for pudding. 21 is famous for welcoming guests with excellent value and warm hospitality.
Been to 21 lots of times . Food was ok Service was shocking.
We enjoyed this venue for a birthday celebration. We had cocktails on arrival and there was a great atmosphere. The food was excellent and we had a decent bottle of wine to go with it. Would recommend as a special place to go with friends and family.
Excellent service throughout from all the staff. Food was of a high quality, very tasty and really good value for a saturday night in the "toon".
Excellent as usual
The fixed-price lunch menu is excellent value for money. As ever, the food was delicious and the service professional yet friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to return.
Fabulous meal from the lunch special menu which had a good choice.
Service wasn’t super speedy but suited us having a leisurely lunch with friends.
This was part of a Xmas present and the 3rd time I visited. Service was good, food was excellent. The cost is what you would expect for a restaurant of this quality.
And to top it all of, I had Alan Shearer on the next table
Would definitely be going back
Fabulous as always
Fantastic food, lovely staff and all round great feel to the place. We live in Hull and this was our second visit to cafe 21.
After attending on valentines day for our 4th visit we were very disappointed. This has always been my favourite restaurant in newcastle but that has now changed. When we arrived we were placed in the non romantic part of the restaurant which seemed more of an overflow section even though booking had been made well in advance. No effort on table regarding this occasion apart from two tiny hearts when we thought a candle would have been on table and lit. Was looking forward to souffle starter more than anything but it was overcooked and burned. Staff were very on the ball and cant fault table service so shame the ambiance and food was not to same standard. It seemed the elegance was lost where we were placed compared to the right hand side of the venue.
We had a lovely time but wish the tables were further apart
It was a lovely evening with delicious vegetarian food, very friendly waiters, pleasant atmosphere, nice and not too loud music, all in all a great experience
Great as ever
My husband have been to Cafe 21 on a number of occasions and always enjoyed the food but for some reason our visit on Valentines Day was exceptional would definitely recommend.
My husband and I were going to a gig and so we took advantage of the early dinner menu. We both really enjoyed all three courses, accompanied by a lovely bottle of wine and reluctantly left for the gig as we were having such a good time. We were treated the same way as customers who were eating from the a la carte menu and we weren't rushed at all, despite it being a Monday and more or less full! The food was delightful and although not a pudding person generally, I indulged on this occasion and the only difficulty was choosing which one to have! Loved it so much that we are returning in three weeks, to treat my mum and enjoy a longer evening. The choice on the a la carte menu will create even more of a dilemma - all delicious.
Ribeye that my partner ordered was far too salted for taste...she asked for sauce to try and tune it down and they did offer to exchange it. It was a little disappointing but did not dampen our evening too much. We have used 21 many times and this is the first time it has not reached our standard. Staff however are great
Having visited a number of times before we chose 21 as it has always been a firm favourite with us for special occasions. However on this occasion I was somewhat disappointed with the area in which we were sat. I feel like the area to the left of the entrance is not up to standard compared to the main dining area, both the decor and ambience were quite underwhelming and it was really noisy. It was no where near as enjoyable as out previous visits which is a shame as this was my husbands birthday.
Our food was excellent, the service was also very good. The restaurant was quite quiet when we arrived around 7.30 but as it filled up it did become fairly noisy, as many have mentioned in their reviews.
Amazing food and service from walking through the door until we left. Relaxed atmosphere - not loud but had a buzz about it. Bravo to all the staff
Great food, presentation was amazing. Great venue. Would definitely attend again
Lunch menu not as varied as usual. Unlike my husband I'm not a 'fish person' but didn't want either of the meat choices. The salmon, however, was perfectly cooked and the oriental sauce was delicious. I understand the hake was perfect. I should have gone a'la carte. My fault.
Have visited before and been very pleased. Service although good was somewhat rushed. Scallop starter was ‘over seared’ and tasted burnt, however if you ignored the burnt taste they were perfectly cooked. Seafood cocktail very good. Halibut very small portion for money although again very well cooked, pea purée very poor, more like mushy peas (do NOT like), tartare sauce had been made with cheap mayo and was not good. Steak tartare main had to be sent back as it contained a lot of sinew (revolting). Complaint handled well about tartare and we were not charged for that dish. Would we return? - Regrettably not
We had the lunch menu. There was something for everyone! I’m gluten intolerant and I had a good choice. I was even offered a substitution from the main menu. Excellent service and great house wine!
Words aren’t necessary, just look at the star rating.
The food, service and atmosphere was absolutely fantastic.. unbeatable
Found the staff rather soulless, and not particularly inviting. My main course was sent back as it was cold, by the time it returned my wife was halfway through hers, waiting would have meant hers befalling the same fate as my original serving!
Fantastic as always.
Brillant lunch, preceded by a couple of some very nice cocktails at bar. To be sure, the best place to eat in Newcastle
Lovely food, friendly staff, great service highly recommended
Very good as usual. Very good as usual.Very good as usual.Very good as usual.
Been going to 21 periodically for years since they were on Queen Street and the food and service etc is still fantastic! My favourite restaurant!
Great value early evening menu. Fantastic quality at a great price in comfortable surroundings.
Super food and service we’ll be back thank you
We dine regularly at Cafe 21 and always enjoy the experience. On our last visit for Sunday Lunch we enjoyed the starters and mains however this time we were disappointed with the Coffee Gourmaund which three of the party ordered. Two diners chose the lemon meringue pie which tasted of nothing but sugar - no zingy lemony flavour which we expected. Also the meringue was unbaked. I chose Sachertorte and I was completely underwhelmed. The chocolate coating tasted of nothing but sugar and the chocolate sponge was very pale with very little chocolate flavour. Usually this is a small but rich dark chocolate sponge. The coffee we all had was Americano. This was very weak and not very hot. We mentioned this to the staff at the time and they said they would pass on our comments to the kitchen.
It is a shame that a lovely meal was let down at the end with the coffees and sweets.
First class as usual in this wonderful restaurant
We thoroughly enjoyed my son’s 21st birthday celebrations at 21. Both the food and service were exceptional and the early evening menu was great value for money. The restaurant was busy with a great atmosphere but it was still possible to chat without too much background noise. Would definitely recommend
Excellent food , great value
Service quick and efficient
We arrived a little early but were shown to our table without any problem. We chose to have the Tom Collins with Hepple gin while we chose our food. It was delicious and the Rosemary sherbet added a lovely touch. I chose the cheese soufflé which was very rich and creamy but followed by the roast cod it was very enjoyable. The service was very good with just the right amount of attention during a busy lunch time. The value for the Newcastle restaurant week menu was excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend 21 for an superb meal.
Have been several times before always been outstanding but we ate from the restaurant week menu this time and the food was terrible
The staff and management couldn’t have been any more helpful trying to put things right we only paid for the one main course we ate between us and the drinks which was a nice gesture
We will return but not during restaurant week
