Outstanding ambiance in a beautiful and ornate room with piano in the back ground. Wonderful service by staff. Very polite and professional. Very good selection of teas. Good selection of sandwiches and sweets. The only part I was not happy with was when it came to replenishing the sandwiches, we were kept waiting half an hour and when they arrived, only one set was served when we were a party of three (vegetarians - which was mentioned at booking). So we were kept waiting another twenty minutes. This led to a delay in being served our sweets. Which we felt we had to rush to eat and missing out on trying another tea selection as we had another engagement to attend. We were there for two and a half hours, which normally would be plenty of time were it not for the 'waiting' time in between. Other than this, Hotel Cafe Royal is a beautiful venue for Afternoon Tea.

Surroundings were opulent, service impeccable! Food was amazing except the scones were more like thick biscuits. .....my only complaint. Would go again.

First off the chairs used in this room are suitable for children in height and very low to the floor and quite uncomfortable. Service started out good, but then declined. Had to ask for more tea. Quality of sandwiches were nothing special

What a truely wonderful experience from the moment you enter the room nothing is too much trouble, the sandwiches were fresh and the fillings were fully explained by Anna our server, tea was plentiful and freshly refilled. The orange jelly to cleanse your taste buds was exquiste and then they brought out the cakes and pastries. We were in heaven such wonderful flavours. Upon leaving we were given a goody bag of even more of the lovely treats. What an experience

My mom and I went here for tea and it was amazing. The sandwiches and dessert were fantastic, and they brought us as much as we wanted. Same with the tea- plenty of options and unlimited. The room was beautiful, the pianist was wonderful, and the staff was delightful. Would definitely recommend!

The service here is impeccable, especially Marion. He pours champagne like it’s an art form. The pianist is probably one of the best in London, and adds so much to the atmosphere, which is already decadent af. The gilded walls and cushy couches make you feel lush and affluent. The china is dainty and beautiful. The food was decent, though I have had much better. I had to have gluten free options, which were meh (though the GF scones were pretty amazing). The rest of my group had the regular option and they seemed happy with it, but it wasn’t the “mmm this is delicious” response that we’ve had elsewhere. All in all, if you want to feel like royalty and are more in it for the ambience or the history of the room, rather than the food, go here. If you want a tasty afternoon tea, with a lot less ambience, try 108 Brasserie instead.

The entire experience was just perfect. The young lady (April) who looked after my wife and I was just wonderful. The food was exceptional. The choice of teas was exciting and varied. The lighting and accompanying pianist was just perfect. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who wishes to celebrate a special occasion. Great value for money.

Four family members of differing ages chose an afternoon tea at Cafe Royale as our 'girlie treat'. It did not disappoint. The setting is gorgeous and many photos were taken of us in the room which is golden, glamourous and has lots of mirrors. The afternoon tea and service was exemplary...you can ask for more items if you particularly enjoy them and we had extra sandwiches as they are out of this world, on the softest bread and with fillings that were yummy. The tea menu was comprehensive and our waitess took time to explain and recommend. There was little noise from other tables although the room was full. A pianist was playing and he was excellent and really added to the ambience. I will definately return

The staff, especially Jennifer, made the entire experience exquisite. From highlighting our special seating to explaining the history of the hotel and some of the menu items...it felt very personal. The teas were delicious and it was such a treat to switch them up without hesitation. Finger sandwiches were delicious (I particularly liked the roast beef and Albert sauce), scones were very filling (though cream almost a bit too clotted) and the Victoria sponge was sticky sweetness. The piano player played nonstop (a bit loud when the room was empty but as it filled up the sound was matched with the buzzing of patrons). And Jennifer went out of our way to make my aunt’s birthday special with champagne and telling us to relax and stay as long as we liked. Very grateful to everyone at Cafe Royal for creating a wonderful memory for us.

From the moment we arrived we got 5 star service. The decor in the room was outstanding, the piano music was well planned and it wasn't too loud either. There were plenty of sandwiches, which are refilled when offered so the value is very good. All in all a lovely afternoon tea I would recommend to others.

This was a truly magnificent and once in a lifetime (though I hope not!) Experience. The room and service and food were exquisite. I would spend everyday there if I could. I did a lot of research for the right afternoon tea - my priority was atmosphere. Every expectation was met. The piano was magical and every detail was superb. Really couldn't say enough wonderful things.

It was lovely, the room was beautiful and the food is superb. Service was okay. But I LOVE and very much enjoyed the live piano music, it was beautifully played, songs were nicely chosen and last non-stopped for over an hour or so. I would highly recommend my friends to come enjoying the same experience.

I've been to Afternoon Tea Ceremony at Café Royal a couple years ago. The whole experience was amazing. They had a ceremony master, a whole tea ceremony, stories about the place, great food, tea and a sense of tradition and class to it. It was about the same price as it is now. I was expecting something like that this time too and brought my husband with me to celebrate our anniversary.

Since then, they toned it way down: no ceremony, no ceremony master, just a couple of sandwiches, scones, sweets and tea served in a beautiful dimmed room. To say the least it was not even comparable to what I experienced before. In my opinion this experience is not worth 130 pounds for 2 people. (note: we don't drink alcohol, so thats just the afternoon tea, with an extra bottle of water and a cappuccino)

The staff however is still really professional, we were really pleased with their service. The live piano music was great too.

Having visited Cafe Royal previously to celebrate a friends birthday, I felt it would be the ideal venue for a family celebration. A few very minor niggles - no one on check in so we wandered into the restaurant and then were hustled back out again as we hadn’t checked in. But once we were in the service was great and the food and tea were fantastic, I must admit the service previously had been outstanding and although great is very good, it lacked a certain something not helped by the fact were were put next to the main door and I couldn’t hear clearly what the food was as our server spoke quite softly, and it got to that embarrassing English stage where I had said pardon a number of times and had resorted to nodding and smiling benignly. I was disappointed that they no longer give the “gift” at the end of the meal, as that is always the crowning touch to make the event more memorable, but I suppose this is because they had an offer on a free glass of champagne, so that was sacrificed.

We had pre-booked our table in the Oscar Wilde Lounge for our Queen Victoria inspired ‘Queen of Afternoon Teas.’ The room is opulent and beautiful with paintings on the ceiling and gilt everywhere.
All the staff were all gracious and welcoming. We were well looked after by our waitress April, who had only worked there for 2 weeks but did an admirable job! I mentioned that my husband does not drink tea and she said it was not a problem, he could have coffee instead. We were given a wax sealed menu which tied in to the Queen Victoria theme. We were offered water (but were charged £6 for it) and we had a glass of champagne each with our tea. There was a wide selection of teas to choose from. I was advised as to which teas would complement the savoury part of our tea. We were brought a cake stand with our delicious selection of sandwiches in different breads. I must admit that the charcoal bread of one sandwich did not look very appetising and was a bit dry! We were offered a refill of sandwiches.
I ordered a different tea to accompany the cakes but it did not arrive until I reminded a waiter when we were half way through our cakes.
We were then brought another cake stand with our scones and cakes on. They were all beautifully presented and looked like miniature works of art. There was cream and jam for the scones. I have eaten lighter scones elsewhere however!
The cakes were delicious! I could not eat all of mine so I was offered a box to take them away with me which I gladly accepted.
We were also brought chocolates on a decorate plate for our anniversary which was a lovely touch.
The amazing piano player who played a wide range of popular music really adds to the ambience of the luxurious setting.
If you visit the toilet take a look at the old photographs up the stairs of previous famous guests.
There was a 12.5% service charge added to the final bill.
It was a lovely experience with a touch of luxury, excellent service and elegant decor.

We had a lovely time at Cafe Royal for my nana’s 75th. It was quite quiet, but we were there at 5pm on a Sunday so no big surprise there I guess. The decor is impressive and the service professional, friendly and high standard. They went out of their way with for the birthday which was very sweet. The teas were excellent, and the pasties both beautifully crafted and delicious, but the sandwiches were a bit bland for our liking. It didn’t really affect our experience though. They had the vegan option available too.

Our server, Estelle, made our tea at the Oscar Wilde Lounge a wonderful experience. Her recommendations for our tea choices were spot on and reflected our likes. The sandwiches and sweets were delicious and beautifully presented, right down to the intricate gold crown and delicate Pearl's on the sweets.

Very disappointing experience. Booked for my stepmother’s 90th birthday, £55 per head. The room is very unusual and it could be fantastic, but the food was very poor and the service overly fussy, trying to make up for the fact that the basics weren’t right. I plan to complain directly to the hotel, but I complained quietly at the time to the manager. I did not want to make a fuss as this was a treat for my stepmother‘s 90th birthday, and she, eagle eyed as ever, could already sense my disquiet. I was memorably told by the manager that people do not come to the afternoon tea for food, they come for the experience. He also went on to say that it is easier to impress with food in a 12 course tasting menu at a restaurant, than it is with afternoon tea. I would beg to differ Mr Manager. You need to get the basics right, with only three courses of scone, cake, and sandwiches it should be quite possible to make the food outstanding, so that the whole experience is fantastic. Sadly, the food was extremely poor. And the £14.50 service charge added to what was at best a sub-par experience took my breath away. I will never recommend anybody to go here. I am very keen to promote good quality service where it is deserved. However, in this case they trade on the name and the room. Avoid at all costs. Rachel Webb
