Very disappointing experience. Booked for my stepmother’s 90th birthday, £55 per head. The room is very unusual and it could be fantastic, but the food was very poor and the service overly fussy, trying to make up for the fact that the basics weren’t right. I plan to complain directly to the hotel, but I complained quietly at the time to the manager. I did not want to make a fuss as this was a treat for my stepmother‘s 90th birthday, and she, eagle eyed as ever, could already sense my disquiet. I was memorably told by the manager that people do not come to the afternoon tea for food, they come for the experience. He also went on to say that it is easier to impress with food in a 12 course tasting menu at a restaurant, than it is with afternoon tea. I would beg to differ Mr Manager. You need to get the basics right, with only three courses of scone, cake, and sandwiches it should be quite possible to make the food outstanding, so that the whole experience is fantastic. Sadly, the food was extremely poor. And the £14.50 service charge added to what was at best a sub-par experience took my breath away. I will never recommend anybody to go here. I am very keen to promote good quality service where it is deserved. However, in this case they trade on the name and the room. Avoid at all costs. Rachel Webb

My third visit and not disappointed. Although the server was rather stern and didn’t tell my husband the particular tea wasn’t available until him came up with mine.

We took our Mum for an afternoon tea at the Hotel Cafe Royal for her birthday and wow, what an experience. The staff is lovely, the atmosphere was made even more quaint by the pianist, who played 'Happy Birthday' as our attendant brought a candle-lit treat for my Mum. The food was exceptional - I particularly enjoyed the cheese tart and the rose and raspberry pastry. Overall, we're very pleased with the experience and would definitely go back again, special occasion, or not.

It was nice, but very expensive.
Service charge was added and was compulsory. 12.5% is a lot.
Service was good - but coronation chicken is not Victorian. It was developed for the most recent coronation.
I don't know if vegetarian versions are available, and I didn't ask as it didn't seem appropriate. Perhaps if there is a vegetarian option that could be marked on the menu. I know we were asked about dietry requirements, but I felt this was more about allergies etc.
Food was good.
Seating wasn't good. We were a group of 6. We had 3 small tables pushed together, three chairs on one side and on the other a 2 seater couch and a chair. The couch is rounded so meant it was difficult to have a conversation as the arm / back of the couch was in the way. 3 chairs would have been much better.

I went here with my Mum and some friends as a treat and it certainly felt like a treat. The Oscar Wilde room, where afternoon tea is served, is a very grand, gold gilded room, that you can’t help but be impressed with. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food itself was very traditional and tasty. We had a really lovely afternoon and look forward to returning one day.

Wonderful ambience, excellent food and superb service. We enjoyed the "Queen of Afternoon Tea" to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria in the beautiful Oscar Wilde Lounge. The menu featured dishes and ingredients that the Queen herself enjoyed such as cheese and asparagus tart, smoked salmon, curried chicken, roast beef and of course a Victoria sponge! Not forgetting the pinnacle of an afternoon tea (at least for me!) – scones with jam and clotted cream (with the extra surprise of home-made lemon curd). Everything was delicious and you could enjoy several helpings if so desired! The live pianist was excellent and the staff friendly and professional. Cannot recommend highly enough!

What a lovely afternoon. The service was impeccable - the staff were all so friendly and welcoming. The food and teas were amazing. It was my son's 21st Birthday and they had the pianist play happy birthday and brought out a birthday surprise for him. They took food allergies very seriously. We could not have asked for more. Excellent throughout.

This is our third visit & as always our experience was as memorable as ever. The setting is beautiful & the staff are outstanding making you feel very special. We really enjoyed the menu, especially the savoury dishes & the mandarin jelly palate cleanser in-between courses. We had the added bonus of a free glass of champagne which was delicious. It is one of the priciest afternoon teas I’ve been to but by far the nicest so definitely worth it. Will be back again next year for sure! Thankyou Cafe Royal team from Mandy & Kim. X

Tea is served in a wonderful opulent room. The staff are very attentive and very willing to cater for all dietary requirements. When I compare to other 5 star hotels the tea is not quite the same level, but still very good.

Have had afternoon tea in the Oscar Wilde room before ..... and it doesn't disappoint on a second visit. Loved the mango noir tea and the champagne of course. Lemon curd with the scones is a lovely touch. We were unable to eat all of the fancy cakes and took them away with us (beautifully boxed up) and they were still delicious the next day. A real treat.

We have had tea in several restaurants now. This is far the most traditional and ornamental. We did the champagne tea, and it was a good value. The food was really good, and there was plenty of it.

It was a wonderful traditional tea. The service was excellent, as was the food. I took my daughter here while visiting the Covent Garden area. She has food allergies, and they were very good about offering alternative foods she could enjoy. It was a perfect addition to our tour of the area.

This afternoon tea was my favorite thing I did the entire time I was in London. Everything was perfect -- from the moment we sat down and the pianist started playing Disney favorites and classic piano bar tunes, I knew it would be amazing. Our waitress, Jasmine, was super attentive and even had fun facts to share about the lounge and the dishes on the set menu. Each item was more delicious than the one before (especially the sandwiches). I would definitely go back and will highly recommend to anyone!

We booked for the queen of the afternoon teas.. The lady who welcomed us (I believe her name was Jennifer?) was extremely kind and served us very well. The selection of tea sandwiches and delicacies were very tasty! The various teas we tasted, the complimentary glass of champagne, as well as the luxury location, finished up this special experience. We surely do this again whenever we come to London!
