Al Dente Edinburgh
A 15 minute walk from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and 7 minute drive from Edinburgh Waverley train station.
Al Dente Restaurant’s décor is fresh and relaxed and the emphasis remains firmly on the comfort factor and the dining experience for all those who choose to dine here.
The menu is carefully selected and vary from the usual Italian menu choice by steeping into the Italian tradition of regional food, using only the freshest seasonal ingredients.
The menu includes handmade pasta, ravioli, gnocchi, delicious antipasti, saladsas well as delicious selection of home made desserts.
The same applies for the wine menu which includes a great choice of wine from north to southern Italian regions.
Being just a few minutes walk from Edinburgh Playhouse, Al Dente is the perfect pre-theatre venue for a fixed menu price starting at £ 10.50 per person
Very nice food and attentive service.Great little find this one and we will certainly be back!!.
Great little restaurant we’ve been back to several times over the years. It was relatively quiet, we thought, for a Friday night. Maybe as a result, the usual atmosphere seemed missing. No complaints with the food or house wine. Service was efficient though our waitress was a bit reserved.
Food was excellent and service good place for business meal or family dinner overall we all had a good time.
Average service , and extremely over priced. Payed 14 pounds for ‘chicken in Parma ham’. Very disappointed with the portion size as i was only given 4 small peices of chicken and 2 potatoes . The menu is very deceiving as my partner ordered a peroni which was advertised 2 pounds cheaper on the menu (to what we were charged). I was also charged 3 pounds for a small can of Diet Coke. Food quality decent , however I will not be returning due to the poor value for money.
We thoroughly enjoyed our excellent meal; booked Al Dente after reading very positive reviews.
We hadn't been to this location since it was Tinelli's --- 25 years ago!
Many thanks to all and we hope to return
Hadn't been to Al Dente for sometime (moving out of the area and having children) but the first visit with our wee ones didn't disappoint. The exceptional standard of food has continued and this charming little restaurant always proves worth a trip. Highly recommend and the "early bird" menu (surprisingly available even on a Saturday) makes it great value.
Lovely food and great staff. A gem in Easter Road.
We really like the ambience of al dente. Food is good and home cooked. Service can be a little slow sometimes but overall a good restaurant
Fab little place! Loved it! Really nice staff food was presented beautifully
We were dining on the pretheatre menu during the week a Time Al Dente which was very good value and provided a fine selection of true Italian dishes with homemade pasta. I would 100% recommend this to try, and I will be returning in the future
Chicken dish dry
Found the food very over priced
Had an absolutely lovely meal here on Friday night, service was relaxed, natural and very friendly. Every course took us right back to our recent holiday in Italy and Sicily. Definitely one of the best Italian dining experiences in Edinburgh. We will be back, regularly!!
Frankly this was a bit of a disappointing experience . First we found out that the menu advertised online differed from the one offered . Then we were told there were no fish dishes available . The appetizers were ok but quite small . The risotto was most definitely not al dente but instead overcooked. The cannelloni was advertised as being filled with ricotta and spinach but there was very little ricotta to be found . The only upside was the wine which was very good and the desserts which were up to standard. Finally the atmosphere could have been helped by the addition of some nice ambient music which unfortunately was missing for most of the night .
First impression was of a calm relaxed ambiance. Friendly helpful waitress took us straight to our table, wine brought and orders taken without any delay, and we were given a complimentary bread basket whilst waiting for our main meal. We chose our dishes from the specials board; the sea bass and shell-fish were beautifully cooked and my partner described his pork medallion dish as very tasty. My only criticism would be that our shared platter of roasted vine tomatoes, aubergine, peppers and wedges could have been more generous (i.e. two tiny thin slices red/yellow pepper). Otherwise we enjoyed a very pleasant evening. We fortunately booked our table in advance as, although we were the first diners to arrive, this little restaurant soon began to fill!
The food and staff were fantastic! If you are in Edinburgh, this needs to be on your list. Unassuming but wonderful!
Small nice restaurant with very friendly service and typical italian food.
Excellent traditional Italian food, great service too. When it looked like they had sold out of coulis for the desert we wanted the waitress came back a few minutes later and said she'd make it happen, she did and it was bloody good.
Always super happy with the service and food
Good menu not a huge selection but for a small restaurant was sufficient. Only one waitress on although coped very well maybe could think about extra staff on a Saturday night
Absolutely lovely place and food was delicious! True Italian, you can tell. Hidden and small but yummy. Nice menu and lots of choices for wine. Staff very friendly and quick
Starter (sformatino) probably frozen and not homemade.
Pesto genovese bought already made and not homemade (as chef told us).
Prices too high for the quality of food.
Absolutely amazing. Real Italian food, home-made pasta, fresh ingredients. Cozy and warm ambience. I would recommend.
Great food and service. Lots of fish on the menu with a couple of meat specials. Not plush but a real find. It was a cold evening and the restaurant could have been a bit warmer.
10 of us went for my B-Day celebration included 3 kids. They don't do kids menu but brilliant chef offered to make anything what kids want. Everything cooked from fresh ingredients straight to your plate. You felt like you're in Italy. Can't praise it enough. On the other side the things the restaurant needs to look at is : having black tea ( didn't have any ? ) and ladies toilet facilities ( the toilet seat was broken and completely came off ... )
Other than that superb! Chef was 5 star cook and very knowledgeable and helpful.
Definitely will come back!
Thank you for the lovely meal Al Dente!
Lovely evening with friends. Food excellent, will return
A lovely little restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and great authentic Italian food.
Very little on the menu, No steaks, no pizza, no breads whatsoever. Menus online nothing like the menu you get.
all mainly pasta. I ordered the special ravioli and got 7 pieces nothing else. Left the place totally disappointed and hungry. We have dinned all over the world and this must be someone who is starting out and has no clue of what Italian dinning is about.
Friendly local gem. Good, authentically cooked pasta. Dishes appropriately priced.
Lovely meal, very authentic and enjoyable. Good for any occasion.
Food is very tasty and very well presented! Maybe the best value for money in Edinburgh! Enjoyed this evening meal!
Food was delicious - best lasagna ever! My wife and I will certainly be back.
Good food, great service. Best Italian restaurant in Edinburgh
Wonderful discovery! My wife and I are staying in Edinburgh while visiting family. We discovered this wonderful restaurant in our neighborhood. We enjoyed a delicious meal prepared from excellent, fresh ingredients and professional, friendly service. We are returning with cousins this very week!
Lovely restaurant, would certainly recommend to anyone and we will be going back. The waiter was very nice, great service and the food was delicious.
We visited Al Dente on a Tuesday night and were one of only two covers that evening. The food was really tasty and the portions were a good size. The service was great and they were very accommodating to our requirements (gluten free). Our only disappointment was that they didn't have any homemade ravioli that night which we had heard good things about and were hoping to try. We definitely want to go at the weekend as I imagine the restaurant will be buzzing. Would definitely recommend.
Thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. From the greeting as we entered to the minute we left. Food and wine was delicious. Waiter was really pleasant, friendly and helpful. Would definitely dine here again.
Very enjoyable evening the owner was very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is small and cosy with a great atmosphere, food and wine . We will recommend it to friends and would definitely go back.
Lovely restaurant with great service and interesting dishes
The restaurant was lovely and the ambience was good. Unfortunately the owner seemed to be on his own serving in the restaurant on the Saturday evening we were there. The restaurant was full for most of the evening. One person attending tables simply wasn't enough. So what should have been a very pleasant meal with my wife was somewhat spoiled by poor service. Waiting 15 minutes between being handed the sweet menu and being asked for our order simply wasn't good enough! I might be prepared to give it another go, if the service is normally better.
