Italian
Al Molo brings Italian cuisine from the Emilia Romagna region - voted by Forbes magazine as Italy's greatest gastronomic treasure - together with a modern style. Chef Giuseppe Vannucci combines his origins in traditional Italian cooking with his training in London resulting in a restaurant that brings Italian metropolitan chic to the seaside resort of Weymouth.

Using local produce with the finest Italian ingredients the restaurant prides itself on quality food with a difference in a venue which provides an amazing setting. Whilst dining on excellent cuisine you can enjoy panoramic views of Weymouth Bay and the Jurassic coastline in a relaxed and grand setting.

Respecting the building's origins as part of the pier's bandstand the restaurants decor nods to the past incorporating art deco features together with modern design. You sense a feeling of luxury as you walk through the doors.

This was our second visit to Al Molo in the past year. We live 160 miles / three hours drive away, but discovered this beautiful Italian restaurant on our way through to visit relatives in Devon. We had a window table on our first visit, where you seem to be perched right above the edge of the sea, so we requested the same table for our return visit. We watched some brilliant paddle boarders surf the small waves across an almost flat calm sea, and they carried on until just after a great sunset. The food was absolutely beautiful, freshly made and very authentically Italian. I started with the melt-in-the mouth fried calamari and courgette and followed it with spaghetti with clams (even the spaghetti was made in-house) served in a wonderfully creamy saffron sauce. My wife had the crab and black truffle cake (VERY tasty fish cakes), followed by fresh sea bass with sautéed cabbage and pancetta - another epic dish. The service was with a smile, attentive but never obtrusive. All the other diners seemed to be enjoying Al Molo as much as we did. We will certainly be calling in again, when we next head for Devon.

It was a Monday early evening, so we expected it to be quiet. We were seated overlooking the Sea which was lovely, unfortunately a couple of very loud girls next to us...never mind, didn’t deter our enjoyment of the food.

It's a great location, with a brilliant view across the bay. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was good but not outstanding (crab and truffle cakes sounded promising but were a bit bland and disappointing; lamb tortelloni were lovely though). Portion sizes are on the small size - without side dishes (we shared two between two of us) they would have left a normal diner hungry. At £85 for two of us (including drinks) it was a pleasant meal but a bit overpriced for what it offered.

The restaurant is need of some cleaning and is a little tired. The windows need cleaning regularly as the view was obscured by the salt deposits.
Better presentation of the food would help but the food was ok.

Al Molo

Sorry, we didn’t live up to expectations Jonathan, it is a constant battle to beat the elements with the salt on the windows, being on the beach and sometimes over the sea, it makes it a difficult job. However, most of the time we are on top of it. Giuseppe & Tim

The restaurant has a main room, which is attractive and a small room which is not. We were put in the small room even though we booked several weeks in advance. We felt like second class customers. The starters and drinks arrived quickly but we then waited an hour for our main course before I asked the waitress about our order. She hadn't seemed to notice we were sitting there without food even though she was serving people around us and didn't appear particularly surprised or bothered. She blamed the kitchen for forgetting our order. As there was no apology or indication from her that we would be served soon we got up to leave and went to pay for our starters and drinks. The manager intervened at this point and persuaded us to stay and offered us dinner on the house. The meal then arrived quickly. The reason he gave for us not being served was that they were very busy. The manager was charming and helpful but the whole experience was frustrating and made us feel uncomfortable. We would not recommend this restaurant.

Responded on 29 August 2019

John We were disappointed to see your comments after everything we did to make the situation better. It does seem that a completely on the house meal for your entire table, 2 courses and drinks was not enough for you. Perhaps you would have been happier with a thorough flogging to all concerned, maybe that would have appeased you? Probably not. Yes, we got things wrong at the start of your meal, no excuses we did and we did everything in our power (way and beyond) to make things better. G & T

Our first visit, what a great place. On the Seafront at Weymouth, actually has its feet in the sea, that makes for a terrific view across the bay. Really nice staff, our service was very good. Excellent food, the Porchetta as a starter was superb, and the Lamb tortellini IN gorgonzola sauce perfect, nice panna cotta to finish, all washed down with an excellent full bodied Fiano. We will be back.

The restaurant itself is beautifully sited in an art deco building between the promenade and the beach in Weymouth. We received a good welcome and were well looked after, with several visits by the co-owner who explained how they produced their delicious sliced pork belly starter. The other starters chosen by our table, mussels, and crab and black truffle cakes, were much enjoyed. We all chose the fixed menu and enjoyed the main dishes, Dorset chicken with celeriac and potato mash, sea bass, and fillets steaks cooked to order.

Altogether, a very pleasant evening. Returning there would be no hardship!

We ate at Al Molo for the first time last week having been recommended by friends. It was a celebration birthday meal and we were shown to a table in the window looking out over the water which was perfect on a beautiful sunny evening. We could not fault the food we both choose all of which was delicious and because it was a birthday celebration, the staff brought the desert to the table with a lighted candle and sang "Happy Birthday". We will certainly look forward to dining at Al Molo again soon.

We were delighted to find Al Molo had reopened and booked a table for four, as friends were coming to stay for the weekend. We are local, our friends not, although we have dined at Al Molo with them before.
I requested a window table when booking and was happy to find one reserved for us. Initial service and first course were great.
Then something went wrong. We waited between 30 and 40 mins for our main course. We were in no rush so not keeping an exact eye on the time but noticed other tables, who had arrived after us had had both their starters and main courses. At one point the waiter came to check we had had our first course! Our waiter, accompanied by a till printout, came to explain that we had only waited the 20mins which the restaurant allowed between courses but this was not the case. Nor was the maths! We received apologies for the wait, but still our main course didn’t come. After a chat with the manager, who apologised, our food arrived. In fairness, we think it was just about to, without the chat. Two of us really enjoyed our mains - one seabass, one fresh spaghetti with scallops. The other two, less expensive dishes, were nice but not overly impressive. Sadly, the ambience had been spoiled. Two of us ordered (and enjoyed) dessert.
We also ordered one coffee. The coffee never came. The desserts were not charged for, but then when trying to pay the bill, which we split, a mistake was made and we are charged an additional £5. Our friend realised and the mistake was rectified.
There didn’t seem to be a general problem. I think we were just unlucky. It’s a shame as a Al Molo used to be one of our favourite, ‘special occasion’ restaurants. Now we will think twice.

Al Molo
Responded on 16 August 2019

We are delighted that you came back, however, we were a little disappointed about your tables rudeness to your waiter and your concept of timings. Starters arrived at 7.45. Mains ordered called at 8.20 order arrived at 8.40. Not unreasonable timings for food cooked fresh to order. Yes, mistakes were made with your coffee and during the settlement of your bill. We corrected and compensated you for then and there. I am sure this is not your tables usual behaviour, you did say the food was lovely.

A lovely evening with family including two 8 year old boys. Lovely restaurant, accommodating staff. The fillet steak looked beautiful and apparently tasted pretty amazing too. My husband and I had the lamb tortollini and although very delicious, was very small in terms of portion size. We had about 8 -10 pieces of pasta each for £14!!! The toilets were also fairly horrid. However all in all a lovely evening out.

Food was lovely, the fish dish was really nice but felt the staff member and manager could have been a bit more attentive, as did not realise there were no vegetables with my dish, so asked the gentleman who served us and he said to speak to the manager, who again was not really customer focused on our requirements so in the end I ordered a salad with my fish dish, as did not want to wait ages as my main dish was already here.

We were greeted in a most friendly and welcoming manner. My first slight disappointment though was the lack of premium tonic water (for my gin); it makes a big difference. The service to begin with was exceptional however this slipped during the course of the evening to non existent after we had paid the bill and no one said good bye to us when we left. We were a party of 4 and all had a starter which were nice and as expected. Two of the (main) meals were excellent however the other 2 were under par; cold chips on one and cold spaghetti which was cooked rather too al dente on the other. The desserts were ok (but you can’t go wrong with ice cream); the cheeseboard was perhaps a little on the small side. Overall we had a lovely evening and the setting/view is pretty much unbeatable. We just felt there were a few things which could be improved upon.
