Angels with Bagpipes
Mixing an atmospheric Old Town setting with chic, contemporary looks, the restaurant reflects many of the city’s most defining features. With a humble facade nestled in the beautiful 17th century building, rich tones of bronze and marble cascade throughout the two tiers of Angels with Bagpipes.
Angels with Bagpipe’s kitchen has gained a glowing reputation in a city abundant with restaurants of the highest standards. Sourcing the best produce and ingredients, allowing the quality to shine through their elegant dishes. By blending innovative and traditional techniques, their menu is fresh and exciting throughout all seasons
The setting is OK.
The service was initially very average: the waiter wasn’t particularly pleasant and had a bit of an attitude, as did another member of the staff (the waiter eventually dealt with an issue very professionally though). The rest were lovely.
The food was delicious. Excellent ingredients. The venison salami is amazing. The cured salmon is excellent and its herbs and sauces very special. Our beef (ribeye and fillet) was too salty, as was the hake, but otherwise were very good.
In the waiter’s defence, he was very apologetic and kindly insisted to redo the dishes, but we declined as we had eaten quite a bit and didn’t feel we could do justice to the new portion; so that was very nice of them.
All in all it was ok, but a little work would make a huge difference at this place.
Vegetarian option was extremely limited. Portion size on the small side but what we had was well cooked.
My wife's veggie main course was pretty disappointing however.
We were four friends meeting to celebrate our special birthday - one of us was on crutches and unable to go up or down stairs. We check the website to see what it said about disable access to see whether we should call ahead. The website was silent so we assumed disabled access was not a problem - therein was where we made our mistake the restaurant is not disabled friendly and whilst the staff did try to accommodate us and were eventually offer us a table in the dinning room we were already settled in the bar booth and did not want the upheaval off moving table. This slightly marred an otherwise enjoyable evening and the main event - the food was delicious.
The service and the food was excellent although the portion were rather small.
I had expected a very old traditional style building given its age and location on the Royal Mile but this was not the case as inside it is very modern and contemporary. Although some dishes could be described as traditionally Scottish most were not in my opinion. I was entertaining friends from Chile who were expecting hearty Scottish fare and although the food presented was very good and of very good quality the portions could not be described as generous.
Great restaurant in fabulous setting. We are regulars, it’s not cheap but it’s great food and the service is super. This is one of those restaurants that still tries hard to please, unlike some of the others in the area who seem to have given up on quality and just trade on reputation.
Amazing food , great staff and decent prices ...what more do you want !
Delicious food, which was beautifully presented, with attentive service in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere.
Just wonderful! We came here for lunch on our trip to Edinburgh upon recommendations of friends and locals. The 2-3 course lunch menu is a great deal for the quality of food, if you can treat yourself for lunch. The appetizer was incredibly fresh, I loved my main course (risotto), and our dessert was complex. Thanks for having excellent veggie options that don't sacrifice quality or complexity! Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was lovely but relaxed. Good mix of classic and modern. Highly recommend!
Excellent food, high quality wine, low noice, good service
Warm welcome and attentive service by all staff. Delicious food, beautifully presented. Relaxed atmosphere.
Overall very good. Noisy from other tables and the window was wide open, but closed when I asked. Tables were being set up for the next day which was a bit irritating as we felt we were in the way
We have been to Angels with Bagpipes over many years and the standard of the food, the service and the value has always been excellent. Highly recommended!
I will definitely recommend the food quality offered in the restaurant to everyone. Not the service quality though. One would expect a certain level of service in a restaurant that sells itself as a 5 stars restaurant, but only offers a 2 stars level of service at best. An example is: The waitress clearing the dishes from our first course proceeded to ask whether we wanted coffee or tea when we have yet to be served our main course. I don't see how she could have missed the fact that we had only been seated for 1/2 hour or so, plus cutleries for mains sit unused on the table. The fact that she was standing next to our table (which happens to be by the order station) the whole time just make her mistake all the more unforgivable. When pointed out, she did apologised.
From walking in and being greeted by the Staff, it was outstanding. Our server Steph was brilliant as was the food. We'll be back !!
Best meal we ate in Edinburgh!! The duck and picanha steak were AMAZING!!!
One of the top meals we experienced in Edingburgh. Ronnie (Veronica) was our waitress and she was equally outstanding. We were a group of eight and she handled it flawlessly.
Our group had Hake, Lamb, Ribeye steak, and Duck and everyone gave their meal a 10. Highly recommend.
Great tasting menu paired with wine. Nice celebration mesl.
We took the tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was fantastic! The servers were great and very knowledgable. I couldn’t fault anything about the experience.
We were disappointed with our experience and won’t be rushing back. I’ve been a couple of times before in the past and had enjoyed my experience so recommended Angel with Bagpipes to our friends but was embarrassed as it fell well short of past experience. The food was average at best. Haggis to start - served luke warm, not pleasant as haggis is greasy when not hot enough. We were a group of four and three of us had the haggis and all were disappointed. The cheese course lacked inspiration (can get similar from our local supermarket) - consensus was it was overpriced for what was offered. Overall, portions were small with no flavour sensations, left feeling hungry and disappointed despite a large bill.
Lovely restaurant - nice atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food. And the location is outstanding!
Impressive cuisine, friendly ambience and charming service
We had a lovely dinner at Angels with Bagpipes. We were disappointed not to have allotted sufficient time to enjoy the tasting menu, as we had scheduled an evening tour of the underground vaults. I mentioned our time constraint and the waitress aptly managed our dinner, which included the Mushroom celeriac with oregano and tomato as well as the Cured salmon grand fir, kohlarabi. Delicious and beautifully presented. For mains we chose the Lamb and the Duck Breast with sides of creamed potato and the spring greens with smoked garlic. Both were superb. For dessert we enjoyed a cheese platter with spiced chutney. Our only dissapointment was our timing. SO, don't make the same mistake. Alot 3 hours for the tasting menu, but do go to Angels with Bagpipes!
One person in my dinner party is vegan. The staff were great and took extra care when checking to ensure the wine and dishes met my friend’s dietary requirements.
Everything was great! We really loved it!
fantastic in all ways.
very well executed meal, fantastic service, great drinks !! all ways good
Perfection yet again. Superb food. Superb service.
Thank you form providing a truly wonderful end to our Wedding day. We all came away commenting how your Taster Menu with wine was a fantastic experience and one we will never forget.
Scores low on the value for money scale....high menu prices for small plate portions. I had salmon starter (tiny portion, nice salmon but nothing spectacular) and then duck (again, small portion costing £22 without any sides to go with it).....waitress didn't indicate that sides might be a good idea.
I think they are going for "fine dining" but in my opinion, as a walk in venue off the High St, it doesn't convey that appearance or ambiance.
Won't be considering again....better value to be had elsewhere in town....I guess the tourist and business clientele will keep things ticking over but I think the restaurant needs to be careful about possible over-pricing.
I travel 200 nights a year and this was one of the best meals and experiences that I have had in a long time. Every course was beyond expectations and my wife and I ordered different items for each course! Great Food, Great Service, Great Atmosphere!!! I would highly recommend!
We visited here on a friend's recommendation - so pleased we did. We had the tasting menu with wines and just loved everything. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive.
I’ve been to this restaurant quite a few times now and always had a great experience. Good service, friendly and knowledgeable. The food is lovely and the paired wines with the tasting menu is worth trying to experience foods you might not otherwise choose. Always book in advance for a Saturday night to make sure you get a decent time.
What an amazing place - the staff where really friendly and attentive. The atmosphere of Angels with Bagpipes was delightful. The food and wine were absolutely amazing.
The appetizers and desserts were superb -- particularly the Haggis, neeps & tatties with black haggis and whisky sauce. The three of us all ordered different desserts (Dark chocolate sea buckthorn orange cake, Heather honey milk with lemon balm, and Highland rhubarb with duck egg custard), and agreed they were among the best we have ever had. The sea trout was beautifully presented and pleasant in flavor, but did not stand out. The ribeye was quite good. Portions are sized with the expectation you will order something on the side to share, and the side of spring greens with smoked garlic was quite good. All in all, one of the best meals we had, but seemed a tad overpriced.
Service, presentation, and food all excellent. Our experience was perfect.
Such a unique name, right across the street from St. Giles, it has to be good. It was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. The food was locally sourced as much as possible with a beautiful presentation. The server gave good recommendations. We would certainly go again.
Lovely food ambiance and friendly staff. A very nice place to eat
What a fantastic filet mignon with garlic butter. Amazing. My wife and I shared this. She had a sublime salad with olive oil and citrus, Our service was impeccable. You made our 26th anniversary very special.
Very nice food in a good spot, however not much to choose from.
