Angels with Bagpipes, Edinburgh. My husband and I recently visited Angels with Bagpipes for Sunday lunch. The restaurant has both an ground floor and basement seating area.
We were fortunate enough to get a lovely table at the back of the ground floor where there is a view into a raised 'courtyard' area (just a small point - I found it slightly drafty in this area)
The service from the outset was very good. Our coats and overnight bags efficiently dispatched before being seated.
There was a choice of either a 2 or 3 course set menu or options from the a la carte menu. The team where flexible and allowed us to order a mix from both. All ingredients sourced from local producers.
My husband had the yellow split pea, smoked ham a soup which was absolutely delicious and I had the haggis and neeps as starters. Again very lovely. I chose the Picanha Steak for my main. I'd not eaten this cut of Brazilian steak before. I have to say that I wouldn't choose it again. Not because it wasn't cooked well - it was, but it was very fibrous and therefore tough to cut and eat. This is no reflection on the chef, purely that I wouldn't choose that cut again. My husband had the fillet steak and it was melt in the mouth.
The food was very well presented and delicious. A good wine and drinks list where available.
All together a very nice lunch and we would't hesitate in returning.
Exceptional food - and felt cosy considering the high profile location.
Didn’t realise that the voucher I had wasn’t applicable after 5pm on a Friday but the staff honoured it and took the value off our final bill.
Food was VERY tasty but didn’t realise the portions would be so small and didn’t feel satisfied when we left.
The menu was difficult to read and didn’t describe the dishes every well. We asked a member of staff to explain the desserts and she didn’t do a very good job.
Overall a lovely meal but far too expensive to rush back.
Great meal! Tastes were so well combined for the goat cheese starter and the venison main dish was so tender and perfectly cooked (med-rare). Service was attentive and friendly. It was a wonderful experience for my wife and I in Edinburgh.
Everything was lovely. Perfect food served quickly and also they offered us a pair of glasses of champagne. We will repeat for sure.
Poor, restricted menu selection and small portions; a taster menu size.
This restaurant was outstanding from the food to service and even decor. We were made to feel very special on our anniversary with complimentary Prosecco on arrival. We were seated in a private area which was so tastefully decorated with mood lights and high quality furnishings. This really added to the whole experience. Myself and my partner enjoyed a full fillet steak accompanied with delicious cocktails which we agreed that everything servers was faultless, the meal was exquisite and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Angles with Bagpipes.
amazing delicious food, great service and attention to detail, cant wait to go back!
Birthday meal. Good choice of food on menu. Nicely presented and delicious. Service was lovely.
Was a very nice meal. My gurnard was tasty but slightly over cooked
We would return
Location accessible. Service and ambience average. Food excellent.
Small restaurant but great for a special occasion. Great food that you pay for but well worth it.
I did feel the initial welcome was a little flat but it was picked up by the second lady who made us feel very welcome.
Great knowledge of the food and wine in offer by our waiter and served in good time with enough breaks in between courses.
Wonderful location for a walk about pre-post meal and plenty of nice pubs to dive in if the weather is poor!
Another sublime evening in the company of Angels. Love this restaurant and we go regularly to get our fix of delicious food.
Excellent modern menu and tasty high quality food. All served by an excellent team of friendly and efficient staff. A great start to a wonderful rugby weekend in Edinburgh. We will certainly return.
The food was lovely and the staff were very welcoming.
I do not feel the music added to the ambiance, it seemed all wrong.
There was a strange smell on the stairwell heading towards the bathrooms and lower Dining.
Fabulous food , great atmosphere and exceptional service . Really enjoyed pur first visit here and look forward to returning. Staff were first class and should be applauded. Although last to leave we never felt rushed. Everything course was delicious, piping hot and appetising. Well done
This was the best meal we had had in a while. The food is beautifully cooked and presented. The service is excellent and the ambience relaxed. I would thoroughly recommend.
Our table was on the ground floor in the back room which was great. All tables were full which gave it a great ambiance. Had the rye bread before our starters which was lovely with balsamic vinegar and a touch of raspberry which was gorgeous. Then the goats cheese starter which was quite a lot after the bread so we asked to wait a while for our Venison mains. This was no problem and well worth waiting for. Chose the chocolate desert which was nice but I’ve had better. All in all though it was a lovely meal and evening so will be back.
Poor start with flat champagne, chicken and steak well cooked but potatoes cold and chips laced with salt. We expected much better from this resto and needs to up its game to maintain or develop a reputation worthy of its position on the royal mile.
Service was impeccable - friendly and courteous staff who were extremely attentive from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We had the set lunch menu which was excellent value, and there was something for everyone. Party of 8 for a 50th birthday.
Very welcoming staff and beautiful food. We chose the set lunch menu and thoroughly enjoyed both main courses and desserts.
Our table for 2 was so close to next table you felt you couldn’t have a conversation. Portions were close to ‘nouvelle cuisine’ - 3 small mouthfuls of venison for around £24! Service was very friendly but 2 courses were served and finished in well under an hour - felt you were being rushed so that they could get more people in. Used to really like this restaurant but unfortunately won’t be back.
What a wonderful evening. We had just got engage that afternoon and I had let the venue know in advance. We had a beautiful private dining area overlooking one of Edinburgh’s famous stepped alleyways. The food was amazing, we had the tasting menu and the staff were really friendly and couldn’t have been more attentive. Thank you for a wornderful and unforgettable engagement supper 😊
Food & ambiance was lovely, have recommended to friends already & hope to revisit soon ourselves.
Lovely décor, excellent service, delicious meal from the seasonal lunch menu, beautiful presentation. Highly recommended.
Marvellous placed, exceptional food and drinks with a fantastic twist to each and every element. Absolutely loved it!
Disappointed this trip. Feels like they have taken their eye off the ball. No bread now and the menus looking tired on scruffy paper. Food was good but its missing its usual spark - sorry
Great service. Food was beautifully prepared and presented. However, the battered fish portions were disappointingly tiny and this has influenced my value for money rating. FortunateIy, I was with my daughter in law and not my husband who would have been most unimpressed as well as still hungry afterwards!
As well as a dessert each (again, modest portions), we shared a cheeseboard - a good decision. The cheeses were delicious as was the spicy chutney. Even after all that, we were not left feeling stuffed!
Service au top et le repas était très bon... Bravo
My wife and I were on holiday from the States and we wanted a restaurant with local cuisine. They had snack sized portions for just £3.50 of venison sausage, inhouse olives, and monk fish cheeks that were all exceptional. Steph was our waitress and when she overheard my wife and I talking about going to a pub afterward, gave us a handwritten list of the places she likes to go that are nearby. The atmosphere is nice and quiet, all the food and cocktails were excellent and you couldn’t ask for a nicer staff.
Absolutely perfect in every way. Staff incredibly helpful, friendly and attentive. My children we impressed that their water was continually topped up! The Food was exquisite. If we come back to Edinburgh then we will definitely come back to Angels and Bagpipes and shall recommend you to anyone who’s planning a visit to the city.
Absolutely fantastic food and staff were brilliant
We were given a quiet niche for the 3 of us and found it really relaxing. The service was excellent and we didn't feel rushed. The food (and the accompanying wine) was first class and we thoroughly enjoyed the overall ambience.
Food beautifully prepared and presented, fine dining in the Royal Mile! All side orders, vegetables etc., are extra, we were about £50 a head but that did include three courses each, wine and coffee. The food was pretty special, and that takes time and skill! Portions were on the elegantly small side... but great ambience, an excellent, memorable evening out in the historic old town!
Excellent Scottish cuisine. Great location. Very attentive and knowledgeable staff.
Made a stop here as part of a solo trip to Edinburgh. Wonderful food and very attentive service.
Fantastic service and excellent quality food and wine.
Thank you for very nice evening.
We were give a voucher for Christmas for the restaurant and opted to have lunch. The food was amazing. We ate from the seasonal lunch menu. Would highly recommend.
Great food, great service overall a fantastic night. Would highly recommend.
To be honest, the restaurant was nothing special. The photographs available are clearly taken during a time when decoration is about. Considering what we expected, it all seemed rather bare and cramped.
Food was good and the staff were quick to serve however. I just wouldn't suggest the venue above most others I've been to in Edinburgh lately especially for the price.
Food cost is comparable to the Castle Terrace restaurant and that place really does feel like luxury even before you try their wonderful food. This is all for a similar cost to AwB.
