Aspen Restaurant is Located on 2 main street in Old Saybrook,CT.
Aspen is a consistently excellent place to dine. We enjoy the ambiance, excellent menu and choices and the excellent service from front to back. Our group decided we should make dinner here a monthly treat, as we always leave happy and well served!
First time there. Food was good. A bit noisy. Service was ok but could have been better. Upon entry gentleman at desk was not very friendly/welcoming. Waitress was ok but also not super friendly or informative. Example-3 people ordered glass of sane wine she never suggested buying a bottle for less cost. We had to flag her down when we needed something after meals were delivered. I did put special occasion celebrating a birthday on the reservation but no one ever mentioned or asked and they did not do anything to recognize the special occasion. Prices for pasta dishes were high and small portions.
Aspen is a great place. Very comfortable atmosphere, great bar, nice table settings, friendly service, great food. We highly recommend it
Outstanding, had a wonderful evening out with our granddaughter.
Amazing! Great new menu items, great service and the new manager is wonderful, efficient, hospitable and knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back
I hadn't been to Aspen in a while and I'm glad to see it's remained a wonderful restaurant. I loved my meal and the wine list. Our server was attentive and friendly, not to mention patient with our lively table of 8. I was with the bulk of those 8 people the next night and we all gave the dinner two thumbs up.
I love this restaurant but the food was not great on this night. My calamari (which is by far the best on the shoreline) was chewy and just ok. My pasta with crab and almonds was drowning in brown butter. It needed some freshness and acid. I will go back because it’s a favorite and everyone gets an off night. Our server was FANTASTIC!
Usually this is my go to place, in fact my favorite restaurant on the shoreline. However, since there was a large party of 20 I think the kitchen was overbooked and the staff was extra busy so the food was VERY slow at arriving, not up to par and on the cool side. I’ll go back but I was a little embarrassed as I brought guests and told them it was my very favorite place and they hadn’t been there before.
Been to Aspen many times- always a great experience. Bread with whipped and salted butter is ridiculously good and we look forward to that as much as anything. Salmon is always good, as is grilled romaine salad. No bad choices on the menu. Service is always prompt and friendly. Cocktails are creative and good.
Enjoyed the evening
Aspen never disappoints us. The calamari is the best ever so we always order it!!
This wasn’t our first time here and really liked this restaurant. It wasn’t busy but in fairness it was Sunday night . I had mussels for a starter which were quite peppery . We both ordered the harasser chicken and was surprised to receive dry over charred chicken with really watery mashed potatoes . It was a simple meal that to be honest I could have made myself.
Our server was extremely friendly and really minded us . The girl who was tending bar needs to be let in on the fact she’s quite loud and we didn’t really need to here how NoT busy she was with the 2 people who did sit at the bar . Her laugh sailed thru the restaurant.
This used to be our go to place for drinks / dinner and small plates at the bar . We will think twice the next time .
Food excellent, drinks great and service amazing! We got a perfect table and our server was very attentive throughout the night.
Aspen is an old favorite of ours...Food is always well-prepared and tasty. Menu is thoughtful and interesting with lots of different appetizers and entrees to try. This place stands up well with other great restaurants in Old Saybrook, right near the top. Heartily recommend Aspen for a super lunch or dinner.
Met with 2 friends for dinner and drinks at Aspen. We had a well situated table right away. The staff was courteous and prompt. We asked our waitress for recommendations and shared 3 small plates: calamari, mussels, and short ribs. All were delicous. The food came quickly, presentation was appetizing, and easy to navigate... even when sharing. A strong recommendation for a pleasant evening with a diverse menu ( and good wine list!). We will be back.
great location, great food, great service! Each of us had a different lunch dish and all raved about the quality of the food. The salads are large portions. Highly recommend and look forward to returning.
Our first time and it was an excellent evening. Food, drink and service was great. We will definitely visit again on our next trip to the Old Saybrook area.
There was a long wait for our entrees and the pork chop my husband ordered was cold when it arrived. They did reheat it but I was almost finished with my entree when it came out. My husband did say the pork chop was good. I had a salad which was good and the fettuccine with clams. The sauce was not what I expected on the pasta. It was brown and tasted a bit burnt. I asked prior to ordering if it was white and the server said yes. The server was very sweet but not terribly efficient. The manager offered us deserts to make up for the delayed chop. We accepted although I would have much preferred a smoother evening .
The weekend tasting menu was outstanding! Every bite! We appreciate Aspen frequently. Also use the ECSO Dining Passport on other days (not weekend). Creative chef!
Been awhile since I've been to Aspen. Don't know why I stayed away. Food is excellent. Nice vibe and environment. Bar area is very nice if you'd like to eat at the bar.
Was able to get a reservation for 3 on a Friday night and I'm glad we went. All of us opted for some of their scrumptious salads with a protein added. Two of our group ordered the Grilled Romaine salad, one with Salmon the other chicken. I had a Beet Salad that had (hard to describe) a delicious Blue Cheese Lemon Cheesecake hiding underneath the lettuce. It was delicious and pared with the hanger steak the blue cheese cheesecake was a perfect compliment.
We indulged and started off with their Parmesan Garlic Fries......they came with two dipping sauces and that was our "guilty pleasure" of the evening.
Great food.....again, don't know why I hadn't been back there in so long.
We had guests from out of town visiting and took them here last year. They specifically requested we return....it did not disappoint!
Aspen has offered a number of regional
menus this summer, and their Napa menu was excellent. They also offered wine pairings by the glass. The food was very good, and the 4 course menu price of $40 was very reasonable. Service was attentive , and they slowed down the pace as they saw us enjoying our discussion. All in all, It was a nice night and a great meal.
An enjoyable evening in a warm welcoming space. Service was friendly and professional. Wine list was interesting with less than expected mark up. Food was exceptional. Creative, well presented, and cooked as requested. Looking forward to returning when in Old Saybrook again
The food was excellent. We had the short rib appetizer and the squash blossoms, both were great. For dinner we had the scallops and the pappardelle with lobster. Again, they were excellent. Scallops were cooked perfectly and the pasta had a good amount of lobster. We had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and it was very good. I’ve been here several times and they just seem to be getting better.
The tasting menu is superb. We have returned a number of times to enjoy each new region. This is a gem of a place.
Squash blossoms appetizer was delicious. We had the scallops and lobster bolognese, both were phenomenal. Best meal we’ve had in years. Can’t wait to return!
We both had the seared scallops with lobster fried rice which was delicious & the service was outstanding.
It has been several years since I have dined at Aspen, an upscale restaurant in Old Saybrook CT. The chef has definitely kicked it up a notch. I loved an entrée of sliced duck breast with purple sticky rice, bok choy and a splash of hoisin sauce and my friend was equally pleased with Stonington scallops served with lobster and bacon fried rice. The bar mixed a very good cosmo, but the craft beer selection was slim. The sound level was low to moderate and there was enough space between tables to have a quiet conversation. Prices seemed reasonable for the value. I recommend this spot highly with the caveat that the vegetarian /vegan options are slim to none. Carnivores and seafood lovers will be happy!
We found Aspen’s by chance on a ride tthrough CT on our way home to RI. We enjoyed the freshness of the food and the unique choices. The small plates and appetizers were tasty and beautifully presented. The service was attentive and spot on. I hope to stop again on our way through CT.
WOW! WHAT GREAT IMPROVEMENTS. ASPEN WAS TERRIFIC BEFORE, BUT IT'S OVER THE TOP NOW. GREAT NEW MENU, FANTASTIC WINE SELECTIONS AND GREAT SERVICE. LOVE IT
Aspen is always a great experience. Restaurant was totally full for the 4th of July weekend. Server stopped by at beginning to apologize in advance that she needed a minute (big party was just finishing up) but after that service was very good and she was friendly and knowledgeable even late on a busy night. Salmon was terrific and pork chop was very tender and worth trying. Drinks were terrific- Gin Set Matcha was a hit. Had the donuts and cinnamon ice cream for dessert and was very good. All in all a high point in the area for dining.
Excellent choice for lunch. The menu was different - lots of good choices for those with different food preferences. I had the scallops over a bacon fried rice that was delicious, and my friend had the classic fish and chips. Maybe more than some would like to spend for lunch, but my friend and I wanted more than a deli and liked that we were able to talk quietly and without interruption at a nice table with pleasant air conditioning on a hot day.
Excellent ambiance and great food. My Salmon was simply outstanding and my wife's pasta with lobster was loaded with lobster meat.
We will go there often.
Service was attentive but not overbearing. The food was well prepared, nicely presented. The salads are especially good.
My only issue was the tuna was very grainy, not a good cut & full of veins. Tasty but too difficult to eat.
We are regular diners at Aspen and we ALWAYS have a wonderful evening or lunch there.
The food and service are always exemplary and the new "prix fixe" menus on weekends are exciting and help expand your palate for different cuisine!!
I would highly recommend Aspen for anything from a romantic evening, a business lunch, or just a casual get together anytime.
We frequented ASPEN when we first moved to Old Saybrook. The staff was welcoming and always going above an beyond for their patrons.
We stopped going due to the menu never changing and when it did change there was nothing that trilled us for small plates or dinner.
We decided to try the restaurant again a few months ago an we were pleasantly surprised how the menu had evolved.
We have been back several times and have brought friends and we all enjoyed the service and food.
Excellent ambiance and excellent service.
The food was 5 star until the Entre. Unfortunately, the tenderloin was over-cooked, twice! Frustrating and disappointing since everything was otherwise excellent. We will go back.
Our experience was excellent. The hostess, waiter and food was the best. The mussels and chicken with harissa were outstanding. Tables are a bit close to each other, although that did not interfere with our ability to have a nice conversation with each other. We had a table for two.
Mother’s Day - The ambiance was cozy and the food was delicious!
