with butter beans, wild mushrooms, dandelion and a sherry vinaigrette
Onion Soup Gratinee
Unfortunately the restaurant was completely overbooked. Despite us arriving on time for reservation we were made to wait in an extremely crowded bar area with no social distancing. We left due to safety concerns and no sense of when our table would be ready after 15 minutes.
A hideous hideous evening. Lowlight being oppressively loud DJ with accompanying saxophonist and drummer who worked their way around the restaurant playing free-form. If you want to put on such an event then it should be advertised so diners have an opportunity to opt out.
It's a shame that the management ruined the experience. We had ordered drinks and food. The food had been forgotten and took a while. We had just ordered a round of drinks and were barely half way through them when we were told that management would like us to leave as they have others that would like our table. We were planning on ordering more but decided we would rather not be in a place where we did not feel welcomed or wanted.
Fat too busy , no social distancing , complained , they had no answer , didn’t care
We didn’t stay
Amazing night, with great food and ambiance. Will definitely go back again.
Birthday dinner for 5. Good evening had by all. Food was good without being spectacular. Service was prompt and friendly. Atmosphere was great … as long as you’re not looking for a quiet, romantic dinner. We finished off with excellent cocktails at the bars.
Been to the New York location many times, first time at the one in London and it was just as good. We split an assortment of appetizers and had steaks for dinner. Do not miss the truffle hollandaise with your steak!
Service was excellent!!! Possibly the best in London, at least best I have had. Max one of the managers was amazing and truly made it a special experience. Will be back soon.
Also definitely get the apple tart for dessert.
Buzzy and noisy. Food is average but big portion. Lunch set menu is good value. It is not a place for quiet conversation.
Really fun night with great ambience as ever, but service horrifically slow. Table booked for 8.30pm, table not available until 9.15, mains not received until 10.10pm :-(
Service was very slow and orders for drinks had to be repeated multiple times. Our table was placed right next to a loudspeaker and the console from which a DJ was playing music. We could not hear ourselves talk without shouting loudly (something not supposed to be allowed in confined spaces at the moment). Every attempt we made to get the sound turned down fell on deaf ears (probably couldn’t hear us because of the noise). Final straw was when a saxophonist started limbering up - is it really allowed for an instrument that depends on large volumes of moist laden breath to be blown through it to be played within one metre of a dining guest?
The food was great but the service was really poor. It took an hour for our mains to arrive. When we alerted the waiter he apologised and acknowledged the long wait, blaming a “mix up in the kitchen” and promising to reflect the delay in the bill. When the bill came there was no deduction and the Maitre D’ said the wait had only been 20 minutes. It was an unnecessary way to resolve things and tainted the evening. We were given some chocolates but no deduction.
Great management & service, particularly the front desk
Delightful staff & great food
Food was horrible. Used to be my favorite place in London.
We booked ahead for Saturday night and our table wasn’t ready until at least 20 minutes later - staff were very friendly and courteous (they kindly sat us at a corner booth when we objected to being put right next to the DJ/percussionist) but obviously overwhelmed. Main issue though was the very loud, clubby music which made for quite an intense, stressful atmosphere compared with our pre-COVID visits, made conversation tricky at times - a shame as the food was delicious, drinks were great and delivered promptly, and the service was lovely. Probably fun for a party/group but would think twice about booking again for a date night (maybe it’s less loud during the week?)
Staff were all over the place at the front desk. Panic with post it notes. We were kept waiting for 20 mins. Others far longer.
The entire place was full. Yet they had a BAND on. Sax. Drums. Amped music. It was mental. Everyone was shouting in each other’s ears.
Fortunately we were outside.
Outside was calmer. But still hectic. With the nights revellers rolling past. At least they were more entertaining than the food.
The food was average at best. A dry mac & cheese for the kids. A scalding onion soup starter. A rock hard asparagus dish and a hopeful Turbot artfully served off the bone.
Sadly the fish had been meuniered to oblivion.
You’d never know the creature once lived in a moisture rich sea environment. It was as dry as a camels foot. Even the gravy boat full of capers and butter couldn’t quench its unshakable thirst.
The Ivy round the corner keeps things far more presentable. I’d do that next time.
Great atmosphere. Lovely food
Very strong margaritas 😀
Amazing & totally grateful to the chef that accommodated my preference for cream in my profiteroles & not ice cream!! Absolutely fantastic lunch!!
Great atmosphere especially considering it was a midday reservation, staff were great great service was quick but we were not hurried out even though I imagine there were other bookings and the food was fantastic, will definitely return
The menu is much shorter post COVID, the music ridiculously loud (horrible too), the portions smaller. It’s still fun, the food is still good but PLEASE turn the music down. There have been studies that say loud music diminishes appetite, we certainly didn’t want pudding, so get smart guys!
Great atmosphere, food reasonable
We had a lovely time having lunch here, service was amazing. Thank you to Amy (our waitress) who made the day super special! I would come back here every time if I could guarantee service like that
Very cosy and warm ambience! Food was good as well, maybe more pricey that one would expect but the overall experience was very good and would definitely recommend it!
Lively bistro atmosphere with great service
Fabulous as always, great food and a great atmosphere
Service appalling , food outrageously priced and mediocre, A wobbly table on a pavement with people almost knocking your drinks over as they walk by is not a terrace !!! Apart from a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer on the table absolutely no social distancing procedures or processes.
Great food, service was slacking today and very unorganised.
But was rectified with concession
Good indoor and outdoor seating. Service and food was really good.
Service was lacking. Waitress non attentive and unfriendly. Should have worked at pizza hut. No smiles or thank yous.
Asked 6 times for a candle (like all other tables).
Take the wine bottle away and don’t top up.
Pay £4 for half a cup of black coffee. Sound system is sounding harsh and distracting.
Has so much potential.
We enjoyed our supper at Balthazar. The food was enjoyable & the service good. We thought the wines were fully priced but they were delicious. It was good to sit outside but the terrace by the taxi rank is not the best location.
Very convenient if you are going to the Opera House or any of the theatres near by.
The sea food sharing platter was more than ample with very good oysters. We had lobster as a main and there were a few empty shells on our plates. When we queried this we were told that this is the result of how the lobster was cut. However, I have to say, I have eaten lobster since a child and never was I served empty claw joints. The lobster that was there was very good.
The service was adequate but several times I did have to pour our wine and the restaurant was far from filled. But the meal was good and the price was fair.
Lovely dinner with friend, very kind waitres, had good conversation, and good champagne suggestion. Love it.
Good food. Service staff seems a bit inexperienced.
not the usual seemless service and food
Absolutely awesome service. Great food. Highly recommended.
Generally a good experience however we were left disappointed and frustrated by the service levels in the bar area prior to sitting down to dinner. It had been a hot walk to the restaurant through Covent Garden market however we were kept waiting a good 10 minutes but a wine waiter who was too busy fawning and chatting to some other guests (who had already had their drinks). They were all very animated with each other but that let down the evening for me. The table service was very attentive and the food was lovely.
Didn’t get drink for 42 minutes and had to ask 3 times. Received wrong order and had to chase to make our food order in the first place as we weren’t approached to take it.
Delicious brunch and excellent service! Very enjoyable afternoon with friendly staff.
Food was good, service a bit messy. Table was late, not a big deal for us so we ordered drinks at the bar but then half an hr later were still waiting for them to come to the table. When they did arrive it was the wrong order. Also had to prompt to ask for dessert menu even though at that point it was late and fewer customers around. Food very good but and mussels but unfortunately about a quarter of them had not opened so I couldn’t eat them. They brought over a birthday profiterole which was a nice touch though.
Nice venue, we also had a lovely table but just a bit chaotic. Hopefully they will get back into the swing of things post lockdown
The food, atmosphere and especially the service was fantastic. Kuwar our waiter was very attentive and made our meal experience 1st class. Very enjoyable and will definitely be returning and highly recommend.
