with roasted tomatoes, piment d'Espelette and basil
with butter beans, wild mushrooms, dandelion and a sherry vinaigrette
Great host, great staff & great food. Would def recommend the mixed seafood platter
I hadn’t been for a couple of years and was looking forward to a fun, buzzy dinner with great food and glitzy atmosphere like it had once been, in line with its NY counterpart. Unfortunately things have taken a sharp turn downhill.
Starting with the food, it’s hard to get a shrimp cocktail wrong but the sickly, overly sweet marie rose (exactly the same flavour as prawn cocktail crisps) tasted cheap and fake, and at the same time watery. The burger we had was both dry and bland while the snails were in a barely garlicky sauce, basically just salty oil. The mussels were fine and the bread was very good (the one big plus).
It was such a disappointment for what should be a Covent Garden highlight, especially given how great the NY one still is.
Then (no fault of theirs admittedly) the crowd was just grim - not elegant like it once was, but rather a mass of tarted up young girls taking photos of themselves and guys wearing ridiculous looking trendy hats with too much chest showing. I’m sure this wasn’t helped by the fact that it was Saturday in Covent Garden and maybe it’s better midweek but the quality of the food has dropped so low that I sadly won’t risk trying to find out.
Food was delicious and the ambience was great. Definitely over priced though.
We booked in last minute after a cancellation and so glad we did, this is a lovely energetic venue with the most amazing food and drinks. Staff couldn’t be more helpful and everything bought out very promptly, would absolutely return again thank you for a lovely meal!
A really lovely lunch with my husband and daughter. Great buzzy atmosphere, lovely lady at front of desk with humour. Wonderful waiter service and food was well cooked and delicious. Well done Balthazar we will return most definitely.
We were a party of 6 and we ordered from the Saturday brunch menu. Everyone had 3 courses and the food were of a very good standard. French onion soup tasted authentic. The soufflé is a must try. Service was very good too.
Without doubt, an exceptional evening. Great Food, Brilliant Staff & first class live music. Thanks to all who made our evening so memorable
Went here for my birthday and it was incredible. Best grilled lobster I’ve ever had. Cocktails are amazing, staff are SO friendly and genuinely want to serve you. Just an absolute joy. Thank you so much :)
The best ambience you can hope for from a restaurant, really buzzy and fun, like the New York original. The food could be better to be honest, I expected more. But the vibe more than makes up for it.
Pre theatre meal!
Fabulous food, service and decor! I will be back!
Thank you and welcome back!
Wonderful food, service and ambience.
Beautiful surroundings ... The staff were very attentive and helpful. My first visit to Balthazar, I will definitely be visiting again and recommending the restaurant to my friends .
Excellent food, service was a bit slow.
Ate in sister restaurant in New York and food and staff in Covent Garden were nicer
Food very poor quality..badly presented …just a tourist trap..don’t go if you enjoy good food..one member of staff stood out for his arrogance..anyhow one very nice young lady did compensate us for our poor experience which we very much appreciated
However we certainly will not be back..waste of money
First time back post lockdown on a Saturday night and for some bizarre reason the management have employed a bongo/ sax player along with a DJ. The music is insanely loud for a french bistro style experience. It was more appropriate for a bar and I couldn’t talk to my dinner guest it was this loud. We stayed a bit after dinner as it felt more appropriate then but not during. Please switch it off or provide a quiet area for those who don’t want to listen.
Service was okay. The junior staff need proper training- they tried there best but anyone who has ran a £70 a head restaurant knows what I mean.
My meal was great. My friends lemon sole was mush with too much sauce.
I love this place and would go back but some basics need sorting.
It’s a shame none of the staff were wearing masks. Service was slow.
The steak was tough and uninspired. It is almost impossible to have a conversation in Balthazar the noise levels are ridiculous.
Great fun & great food it definitely suffered new waiting staff with seemingly no training & no supervision
Food very average and expensive.
Food arrived within 5 minutes of order- before the wine. Took almost an hour to remove plates afterwards.
Not a good experience.
Very good and friendly service. A thoroughly lovely time was had by us all!
Had wonderful service from Miguel
He made sure the whole table was happy
Very nice chap
Waiter did not seem to be pleased when we declined to pay the discretionary 12.5% service charge. It's up to the customer? I left a tip but thought 12.5% was too much, especially when I thought it was not up to scratch! Have a word with your staff.
Great food excellent service. A lovely atmosphere and a wonderful evening
Great food & drinks and nice service. We arrived early evening before the rush so the atmosphere was great. Every plate of food that arrived to our table was just wonderful. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Only downside was the complaining table next to us, that should have stayed home and cooked their own food. Got busy at the end of our meal, so noise levels also went up a bit. Definitely recommend.
Overpriced & overcooked fish dishes
Delighted to be back at a favourite restaurant choice. Beautiful setting. Delicious food. Charming and attentive staff. Without wine, excellent value.
Food is still great and so is the staff, unfortunately they now have super loud music some evenings that completely clashes with the restaurant’s vibe.
Loved everything about it. We were given a lovely table. Service was excellent bu in no way intrusive. Food and wines were excellent and the ambiance was perfect. Loved every minute
Balthazar is greet for any occasion! Great service and food consistently good.
bit sporadic with service, food just ok, nit up to previous standards, and thought it was expensive for what we got, but would return. might just be an off day.
Loved the food and had a fabulous evening
On a table at end of row not ideal felt as If we were sitting in a main walk way
Services was over zealous literally on top of is every 5mins
Food came cold but came back popping hot.
12% service is excessive especially on drinks ... not the best especially as so much choice about .
Music and entertainment was great. Food delay was super slow
I've eaten at the NY restaurant since 1997. For my first outing here in London all I can say is I'll never go back.
Ordered a glass of Veuve Cliquot which was warm and flat. And actually wasn't that brand, which they sheepishly acknowledged after we pointed out they don't sell it by the glass. Sent Steak tar tar back.
The food and service were as good as before. But the music was extremely loud with a saxophonist and percussionist walking around and playing. Personal view but we did not enjoy it.
Lovely restaurant. Beautiful room so feels like a special occasion.
The service was a bit too speedy. Food came so quickly that it didn’t feel like it was freshly cooked. Also made us feel rushed so that we couldn’t really relax and enjoy the atmosphere
A nice French Brasserie in Covent Garden. Most of the food was good, except the escargots - worst I ever tasted. Service very friendly; nice touch with getting a little birthday cake. The music was far to loud, but younger people might like that.
Overall a nice evening.
Had a great pre theatre dinner at Balthazar - service, food and experience couldn’t have been nicer!
