with roasted tomatoes, piment d'Espelette and basil
with butter beans, wild mushrooms, dandelion and a sherry vinaigrette
First time back post lockdown on a Saturday night and for some bizarre reason the management have employed a bongo/ sax player along with a DJ. The music is insanely loud for a french bistro style experience. It was more appropriate for a bar and I couldn’t talk to my dinner guest it was this loud. We stayed a bit after dinner as it felt more appropriate then but not during. Please switch it off or provide a quiet area for those who don’t want to listen.
Service was okay. The junior staff need proper training- they tried there best but anyone who has ran a £70 a head restaurant knows what I mean.
My meal was great. My friends lemon sole was mush with too much sauce.
I love this place and would go back but some basics need sorting.
It’s a shame none of the staff were wearing masks. Service was slow.
Great fun & great food it definitely suffered new waiting staff with seemingly no training & no supervision
Food very average and expensive.
Food arrived within 5 minutes of order- before the wine. Took almost an hour to remove plates afterwards.
Not a good experience.
Very good and friendly service. A thoroughly lovely time was had by us all!
Had wonderful service from Miguel
He made sure the whole table was happy
Very nice chap
Waiter did not seem to be pleased when we declined to pay the discretionary 12.5% service charge. It's up to the customer? I left a tip but thought 12.5% was too much, especially when I thought it was not up to scratch! Have a word with your staff.
Great food excellent service. A lovely atmosphere and a wonderful evening
Great food & drinks and nice service. We arrived early evening before the rush so the atmosphere was great. Every plate of food that arrived to our table was just wonderful. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Only downside was the complaining table next to us, that should have stayed home and cooked their own food. Got busy at the end of our meal, so noise levels also went up a bit. Definitely recommend.
Overpriced & overcooked fish dishes
Delighted to be back at a favourite restaurant choice. Beautiful setting. Delicious food. Charming and attentive staff. Without wine, excellent value.
Food is still great and so is the staff, unfortunately they now have super loud music some evenings that completely clashes with the restaurant’s vibe.
Balthazar is greet for any occasion! Great service and food consistently good.
Loved everything about it. We were given a lovely table. Service was excellent bu in no way intrusive. Food and wines were excellent and the ambiance was perfect. Loved every minute
bit sporadic with service, food just ok, nit up to previous standards, and thought it was expensive for what we got, but would return. might just be an off day.
Loved the food and had a fabulous evening
On a table at end of row not ideal felt as If we were sitting in a main walk way
Services was over zealous literally on top of is every 5mins
Food came cold but came back popping hot.
12% service is excessive especially on drinks ... not the best especially as so much choice about .
Music and entertainment was great. Food delay was super slow
I've eaten at the NY restaurant since 1997. For my first outing here in London all I can say is I'll never go back.
Ordered a glass of Veuve Cliquot which was warm and flat. And actually wasn't that brand, which they sheepishly acknowledged after we pointed out they don't sell it by the glass. Sent Steak tar tar back.
The food and service were as good as before. But the music was extremely loud with a saxophonist and percussionist walking around and playing. Personal view but we did not enjoy it.
Lovely restaurant. Beautiful room so feels like a special occasion.
The service was a bit too speedy. Food came so quickly that it didn’t feel like it was freshly cooked. Also made us feel rushed so that we couldn’t really relax and enjoy the atmosphere
A nice French Brasserie in Covent Garden. Most of the food was good, except the escargots - worst I ever tasted. Service very friendly; nice touch with getting a little birthday cake. The music was far to loud, but younger people might like that.
Overall a nice evening.
Had a great pre theatre dinner at Balthazar - service, food and experience couldn’t have been nicer!
Perfect for brunch - excellent services and great food!
Good food and service. A bit pricy on the drinks and consider buying by the glass vs the bottle. Good place for celebration or just a nice romantic dinner. Will certainly add to the go-again list.
Very disappointed in the service. Have been to Balthzar many times and was vert disappointed.
I waited over 15 minutes without anyone approaching my table. Tried to get someone’s attention and was finally got someone’s attention to take my order.
Left me not wanting to return which was disappointing as I have always enjoyed my evenings here.
I go to Balthazar’s in NY all the time and assumed the high standards at that location would translate to the London location, but clearly not. We booked a table for 6 (and had to put a card down), but when we arrived they didn’t have a table for us. We waited 15 minutes only to be seated at a table for four pushed against a wall, so our 6th couldn’t even sit. She ended up leaving. They manager lied about how long It would take to get us a new table, and then they took 45 minutes to bring us water or even take our drink order. Despite the obvious mess up with the table, they didn’t even offer drinks on the house! Finally after 90 minutes they moved us to a new table. The waitress was refusing to take our food order until we moved because It would have been to confusing to switch tables post order, so we had to get the manager over again. Then after we moved, the food still took 30 minutes. Steak was poorly cooked, but Mac n cheese and steak tartare were hits. As were the desserts, although one of the orders never showed up. When we ordered another round of the same drinks, they brought two people completely different beers. I guess this was a busy Friday night, but come on…It was embarrassing to bring work colleagues here.
I wish I'd read the reviews beforehand. Lesson learned. Very understaffed. Premium prices demand premium service and this was far from it. I won't bore you with the details as they are all outlined by other diners. In the end I had to ask for the service charge to be taken off as there was no justification for this.
It was a last minute booking from round the corner. We weren't expecting the ambience to be so energetic - felt like a club instead of a French restaurant. It was fun but a bit weird. The food was ok - nothing amazing, and not cheap
Enjoyed Balthazar after a long absence from the restaurant scene because of the pandemic. We sat outside on the pavement, which is not ideal as people also use it to walk past but if you can ignore that, it was actually quite nice to be eating under the stars on a balmy summer night. Food was excellent, we had steak, a chicken salad, and a few hors d'ouevres and drank Chablis and Lilley Spritz, and everything was superlative.
The food was cheap, the snails and the tartare felt store bought. Service was good but the overall experience felt like a rip-off
Attentive service with a bargain set menu.
Steak avec frites - great as usual!
Ordered food and a drink, had to chase them after 30-40 minutes which I imagine is when they actually put the order through to the Kitchen. The wine came about an hour after ordering after multiple queries, tasted a little old. Moules were good though. But the experience was a let down due to the ordering and waiting. Its a busy place and I know it can happen but still.
Disappointing visit. Had been to Balthazar on two previous occasions and we were very pleased. This visit certainly was not a good one. Moved tables twice as first was stuck behind the till. The second was squeezed next to a pillar pushed close to a large table. Don't think this was Covid compliant. To move to the table next table I asked if we could move and was told all the tables were laid up for 5 or 6. This was untrue.
Shame it has become a big greasy spoon cafe. Won't be back
What a shame. The food was good. Everything else left a lot to be desired. 45 minute wait for a booked table at a makeshift bar and wasn’t offered any seating despite being quite pregnant! We were then offered a table for our meal that others had already turned down right next to the DJ and a speaker. Couldn’t hear each other speak, our waitress couldn’t hear us when we were ordering, which might explain why there was an extra £30 worth of food and drink on our bill that we hadn’t ordered. By the time we had finished our main course the DJ and his drums had been joined by a saxophonist and a harmonica!! The place is huge, and it was great that every table was full, but felt that there is enough ambient “noise” in there without needing a DJ and musicians! We asked to move tables for our dessert as the restaurant was less busy by then… we were given a better table and a lovely waitress. Unfortunately won’t be going back any time soon.
Awful experience. Bad food, bad service
One of my favourite restaurants in London!
