The Halibut main, the day's "featured item", came out instantly, dry but with an excellent sauce over it. Clearly it was not cooked fresh ..... most likely cooked in a large batch and held on a steam table. The restaurant was not at all busy, this being a late lunch, but the service bordered on non existent. Balthazar is an area classic, but now best suited for tourists who want to see the interior.
Just LOVE this restaurant! Consistent and wonderful, even after all these years -still and always a huge fan! Service and Food both 5*! Merci!
I was running late due to subway trouble and called to let the reservation team know. I was met with warmth and accommodating reservation associate at the end of the other line and she was kind enough to move my reservation 30 minutes as requested. This helped eliminate additional stress and in the end my business associate was also very late. The service team was nothing short of gracious and the meal was lovely as always.
My only disappointment is the choices on the lunch menu. They’re not as seasonal as should be with too many heavy dishes and not as many as lighter fare for lunch time during the warmer month.
Our waitress, a young woman from Russia was excellent. So too the gentlemen that brought out the food, and the bus person
Love this place. We come whenever we go to New York. Excellent food, service, and people watching.
Everyone was helpful and lovely
Great NY establishment. Service was excellent. Atmosphere and people watching is always an experience.
I took two guest for lunch They wee visiting from Tanzania They loved it.. Always a winner Many thanks..
Always a great experience !
Always a good spot in Downtown, this place through the years keeps its cozy-noisy enjoyable atmosphere, with a good standard of food and service.
What a fabulous institution- sensational food, bustling ‘NYC atmosphere’ and wonderful service from Nicole.
Never disappoints. Always come here when in NYC. Been coming since it opened. Xx
Came for my birthday and the meal felt rushed and not remotely celebratory. Food was well cooked but flavors were all bland. I was most surprised about dessert, which I expected to be excellent, but I found their Mille feuille to be way too sweet and bland. Really wanted to love Balthazar but it fell short.
Fun place. Food was very good.
Beautiful place. Excellent service. But the baked goods were surprisingly disappointing. The croissants and brioche were dried out and tasted like they were a day old.
Great food in a charming restaurant. An experience not to be missed!
Consistently fabulous food and atmosphere.
One of my favorite restaurants, and my favorite French place in NYC. Food is always excellent, service is outstanding, and the pastries are incredible.
French fries are the best!
It was good, everything went well, but unremarkable.
Best restaurant in America.
Service was slow. Waiter forgot to put in our order and we had to wait an hour for our food while others who had arrived after us, got their food before us. Messed up one order - all totally fine, but zero acknowledgement of wait, and no apology. We expected better service and quality of food for the price.
Do not come here for a special occasion.
We specially asked for a nice table when we made reservations as it was for our son’s birthday.
Nobody acknowledged my son’s birthday or made him feel good in any way. They gave us an average table while other guests got much nicer ones.
We were surprised to see that the restaurant fell was not a luxurious boutique one. It was rather an average diner feel with too huge space for hundreds of guests. It was extremely big, very loud, packed with numerous of people waiting for the table. The noise level makes you feel that you are in McDonalds. It is charming so it is unfortunate that the place is way too big which ruins the romantic atmosphere, making the space feel like an average diner.
We didn’t receive any special table or welcome for my son’s birthday which I requested when I made the reservation. They even charged $14 for the very small round chocolate with the candle.
The waiter left us waited way to long, we had to ask for the bread a few times. He didn’t make us feel welcome. We have felt rushed, not at all the level of service we expected for the price.
The menu was mediocre. Luckily I ordered a duck so this was a nice surprise.
We got very dry old bread which we had to ask for twice.
Our waiter made us feel like we are just another number.
It was loud, tourist like dinner place, not at all romantic or cosy boutique style place that we expected.
The place is way too big, too loud, too crowded.
Service was poor. Would not recommend it for any special occasion. It is fine for everyday brunch if you are willing to spend more than average amount of money.
It was disappointing.
A very European atmosphere serving superb food. And for a lively place, quiet enough for conversation.
One of my favorite places to dine. And I’m seated in the corner on the back always which may or may not be “the place” to dine in that restaurant, but the view is amazing! Great place to people watch for sure. I was there for lunch, I had salade niçoise which is perfect. Great wait staff and
Set up staff too. Really wonderful always.
Had a reservation and was seated promptly.
Unfortunately next to a family with a screaming child.
We both had steak Frites and it was good.
Next time I will go back to having the seafood.
This go to brassiere has been a favorite for many years. The food never disappoints and the service is consistently good.
Great breakfast meeting place. Right balance of atmosphere and space to have effective conversation
Great place for people-watching! Our food was delicious and the service was spot on.
Very very nice traditional French bistro with excellent food and great service. Will go again for sure.
A wonderful New York experience, don't leave NY without a visit.
The eggs Benedict is my favorite and the atmosphere is superb. So elegant, and fresh flowers everywhere. Takes me to Paris every time.
A great French ambiance in New York!! Excellent food and service... we will be back every time we come back to NY!!
Our recent trip to Balthazar far exceeded my expectations. The hamburger I got was impeccably seasoned, cooked to perfection, and sandwiched between a soft and sweet brioche bun. The fries were also perfectly cooked and seasoned. In fact, they may be the best fries I have ever eaten. To finish the meal, we had the caramelized banana ricotta tart, which was rich and delicious. I would highly recommend Balthazar to anyone. We will be back!
It was our anniversary and everyone made us feel so special!
The waiter was mean
Excellent food and customer service, as always!!
Balthazar is a gem! Must visit anytime, although we usually enjoy brunch.
