Eastern European

Top tags:

Pre/post Theatre
Based in a converted carriage works, the interior of Southwark’s Baltic restaurant is achingly hip. Warm neutral colours, pale wooden beams and natural light from the glass atrium give the place a natural, organic feel. Right by Southwark tube, Baltic is an ideal place to kick back and indulge in some inspired Eastern European delicacies pre- or post- a trip to The Globe Theatre or The Tate Modern, and it just wouldn't be right to leave without sampling some of the many varieties of Polish and Russian vodka that, along with the hearty food, are Baltic’s calling card. Polish food devotees will know owner Jan Woroniecki’s name from the uber successful Wodka in Kensington, and Chef Kristov in Hammersmith; Baltic too offers a selection of traditional and not-so-traditional Eastern European dishes like pierogi, chilled Hungarian sour cherry soup or caviar blinis served with (you guessed it!) vodka. The other great draw is the jazz, on Sunday nights.

The pre-theatre menu offers good choices and is a great bargain. The braised duck this time was one of the best dishes we have had at Baltic. Wines are good and reasonable. The menu changes some with time but offers a unique taste of Eastern European food. We continue to enjoy Baltic.

We arrived at 5.45 pm and ordered their "Pre- Theatre Menu" which was delicious, with a good choice of dishes. We will be returning again in April for another visit to the Old Vic Theatre.

Delicious food and wonderful, friendly service. The warm eel starter was very good. It is probably best to work up an appetite first to enable you to do justice to the food.

Lovely meal with great cocktails. The blinis and smoked salmon are the best, but also recommend the rabbit stew.

Friday lunch, we had a table for 6. Only 2 other tables occupied so noise level very quiet which is how we like it. Suited our reunion perfectly. Good set menu at a good price. Service good too. Highly recommended for lunch. I imagine evenings may be full and noisy as a lot of hard surfaces. All round excellent.

Fabulous food well presented with a good choice and sensible portions. We took a la carte but there is a really good value pre theatre option.
Excellent cocktails at 2 for 1 until 7.30pm ( we had 3 each !!)

Very poor service. Ordered the roasted cod and received sea bass instead?
Decided to take the sea bass to avoid a fuss and was very disappointed. Received a glass of vodka to compensate. It was lunchtime, I was going back to work and drinking water?

I should not have been charged for the dish, £21?

Good food & attentive service. Will definitely visit again. My only teeny criticism is that, although I know the cuisine doesn’t lend itself to it, it would be nice to have more vegetarian dishes on the menu

Amazing selection of vodkas. Good food - we ate from the pre-theatre menu which was excellent value, but I'd like to come back and eat from the a la carte which looked amazing. Nice wines too. Altogether a very pleasant experience.

The food was delicious and well presented but the service in the bar was great but in the restaurant it was slow and sullen. A smile costs nothing and makes you feel welcome rather than irritation. Also very zealous pouring of wine and a rush to empty the bottle before the starters came is just a poor attitude towards customer service.
Overall we enjoyed ourselves in spite of the surly staff.

Food, ambiance, general service good. But we arrived 20 minutes early for our booked table, told the staff, and wished to sit at the bar. When we moved forward to the restaurant, the person in charge of tables had cancelled our booking even though we'd checked in and were sitting at the bar. Clearly the restaurant needs to improve its communication. Also, I did not like the way a so called "discretionary 12.5% tip) was automatically added to the card machine. This cannot be right. There needs to be the option of adding this on the card machine.

Cocktails and dumplings are amazing as always. The service is always good - attentive without being over bearing. The only thing that I would not recommend is the chicken kiev which was crunchy but quite dry. I felt like I was just eating an over cooked chicken breast with great breadcrumbs. Also, my friend’s lamb with aubergine was nice but the aubergine lacked seasoning. Normally the food is always very good so I was a bit surprised. Would still go again as I’ve been a few times before and it’s always been good
