The food is inspired by classics from Alsace with French and German influences and menu highlights include Tarte Flambées and Coq au Riesling. Bellanger also hosts a series of events throughout the year, such as wine pairing evenings and beer tastings, as well as offering a number of packages with nearby exhibitions and local theatres.
What Insiders Are Saying
Bellanger is a spot in Islington that looks looks and feels very grown-up, but it’s not stuffy. And it’s good at all times of the day.
Great restaurant, food, decor, and value for money too!
Bellanger is our go to restaurant in Islington so we always have an enjoyable experience
We enjoyed an excellent Easter Sunday lunch with the family at this wonderful Parisian style brasserie. We were placed on a friendly round table by the open window near the terrace - glorious weather and a variety of local characters of all ages helped the ambience and our well behaved dog was made very welcome along with many others (not quite so well behaved!). It was all very Islington or in fact Parisian in feel! We all enjoyed our varied French fayre very much and will return for sure. Brilliant service too.
Great service , great food
Bellanger is a family friendly place for a Sunday brunch. The staff are helpful and the loos are amazing
I have been to Bellanger many times, the service can be a bit hit and miss.
The last few times we've been they've missed certain items from our order and we've had to wait a long time for the order to be corrected.
I have dined with you a few times but had no idea you had a prix fixe brunch. I was pleased to see that - such a value! Marina (our hostess) was also unbelievably kind. I was celebrating my friend's birthday and she made it so special. Thank you!
Great venue for lunch.
Lovely food and not bad for value considering the location and the reputation.
We have been multiple times but it’s just not as good as it was.
The breakfast food has become like buffet food, not loving made.
The presentation is like it’s slapped on the plate.
The service is poor. Slow, incorrect orders, not able to find your assigned waiter. Previously it had been very good and a reason why we often returned.
Maybe the worst is all the dogs! There were at least 10 dogs there this day. The owners of some were allowed to be very irresponsible. Two dogs on leads almost tripped over the staff on several occasions.
Dogs are allowed to sit on the seats. So there is fur on the seats. They have dog rugs but not always used. I have seen many dogs out there heads in the tables. Dogs whimpering and begging for good is not pleasant.
And not just little dogs, labradors and large dogs (non service dogs) the staff let the owners get away with this. It’s gone too far!
Staff are often heard complaining about management and each other. I don’t want to hear that kind of talk.
We loved Bellanger but I am not ok to pay the higher price for canteen quality food surroundings by so many dogs.
Bellanger is a great place for brunch, lunch and dinner. Our dinner was perfect with a cocktail and schnitzel!
As ever - it’s great.
I do like Bellanger but it always surprises me how small their menu is.
Three of us were there and two of us ordered their steak frittes and wine deal. Another of us ordered chips with their fish. It all came cold which was really terribly poor. Replacements were quickly arranged
The restaurant took money off the bill but its very unsatisfactory as its not the cheapest place to go.
I will return but it took the edge off the evening.
It was a good meal but not a great one.
The waiters etc made an effort but food lacked its usual high quality. Chicken was a bit dry and the liver pate came without any bread/biscuits etc
Overall good but could have been better.
Disappointing. Have been going to Bellanger for a long time and sadly this may be our last visit.
New menu is a backward step, but the main reason for not returning was the service. Server was slow, and not briefed on the new menu. Couldn't tell us which dishes had dairy (the person I was with had a serious allergy) and seemed reluctant to find out from the kitchen. On more than one occasion her response was "probably ok". When it comes to allergies I thought every restaurant would know that "probably and maybe" are not good enough.
We also had to ask to order drinks and they only arrived with our bill.
Overall very poor service and the best of the old menu gone.
Not likely to repeat.
Nice French food, very tasty, service was slow we drank a whole bottle of wine before we got our mains
When I want a lovely posh, cosy night out with my best friends, Bellanger is our favourite place to meet. The space is sumptuous, the service is kind and attentive, and the French food is delicious. We will be back!
By far my favourite breakfast spot in London - and possibly the best quiche I’ve ever had anywhere. With a casual but grand aesthetic, the attention to detail in the design is incredible. The menu is simple (and french), but everything is good.
Many people don’t realise that this is a dog friendly restaurant; and even more people don’t realise that the pastry chef makes “Bellanger” dog biscuits (that our dog will do just about anything to obtain).
On our most recent visit we noticed that it’s looking a little worn; cushions are frayed, and a tv has made an unwelcome appearance in the bar. Time for a bit of a refresh!
Very friendly service and a comfortable experience
Excellent food, service, and setting
Lovely atmosphere but disappointing and overpriced food and variable service.
Came here because they allow dogs and really enjoyed the atmosphere and food. A lovely place, will go back.
Lots of character in the decor of the dinning room, food offering was good, service very attentive on a saturday night. We unfortunately had to rush out because of our cinema booking but it felt like a place you want dinner to continue for longer. The 3 courses set menu was excellent value for money. Very much looking forward to be back at Bellanger
All aspects excellent. Quality food and superb service. Very impressive compared to our last visit last year. They’ve certainly got their act together.
Enjoyable time as always.. good good and service good
Midweek dinner. Excellent food, but dinner menu could be expanded a bit. Good selection of wines by the glass
Bellanger - just missed the point this time - still great food, but the service was a bit sketchy and our table wasn't ready for nearly 30 minutes! Disappointing as we love this place. No doubt we'll give them a second chance
An acceptable brasserie without however being able to reach the level of authenticity and quality that you find in similar establishments in the other side of the channel.
Bellanger like it's sister restaurants The Wolseley, Brasserie Zedel and Fischers is impeccably well run. The service is very professional, the ambience grown up and the food is a mix of classic french dishes and more contemporary ones superbly done every single time. A great addition to Islington and somewhere to go if you really want to talk to friends in a cosy, peaceful and civilised place.
Our only problem was that the main course took 45 minutes to arrive. Not good when you are going to the theatre!
Bellanger never fails to deliver, they do a great brunch too. Possibly the best on/off Upper Street
We love Bellanger and visit often. On this occasion however the service was really slow. Our Sunday lunch took two hours having had to wait from 2pm when we sat down till 3 when we got our starters. Not ideal when you are having a family meal and have three hungry kids at the table!
Food as good as always but service was slow, which is unusual; and they weren’t full
Very pleasant, attractive brasserie with good, traditional menu and reasonable prices.
Family Xmas brunch. Can't wait to visit again on New Year's Eve
Bellanger for weekend brunch is the place to take it... Great menu and friendly helpful staff
I had expected much more from the team behind The Wolseley.
The food was average; the wines by the glass, uninspiring.
The service, however, was the low point. ‘Inattentive’ would be kind; ‘uncaring’ is probably closer to reality. If they had been overrun with diners, I might be able to understand but I ate there at a time of day when they were not busy and had a surfeit of staff. They were frequently to be found huddled together around the check-in point, laughing and joking. While it is great to have positivity in the team, they could do with focusing this towards serving their clientele. We would have stayed for two courses but left after the first due to the service.
Un vrai dommage.
Good value. Food is always great. Sat by the piano, which is way too loud.
The place is spacious and nicely decorated ,it reminds you very much of the braseries in Paris or the bigger Kaffes in Vienna. The food is definitely q mixture of French and Austrian, belonging to the time that was. Portions are generous and tasty, the best veal Vienna schnitzel. and the atmosphere is gemuetlich (the closest English words would be cosy and friendly). I sat with my friend for more that 2.5 hour.s We were not rushed and were not subjected to the baleful eyes you often get from waiters s who feel you have overstayed your visit, unless you spend more money with them. Very centrally located in Islington.
Usually everything is wonderful here. But on this occasion they had overbooked and there was a long wait for our table and the food.
