Delicious poached pear blue cheese roasted walnut salad
I dined here on a wet weekday evening in March so it was very quiet. However, despite being the only diner in the restaurant at one point, I was not made to feel awkward or rushed. I had a delicious meal and the service was polite, efficient and friendly. The starter was a poached pear with local blue cheese and walnut salad and If I had one small niggle it was that the pear in the starter had been in the fridge and was quite cold compared to the other ingredients but that's my taste as I don't like fridge-cold savoury food: however, the combination of flavours was lovely. The main course was duck breast and it was the tenderest duck I've ever eaten. The pudding was a panna cotta and caramel and ginger ice cream - equally delicious! If you have a table by the window you have a lovely view of the Minster and can watch the world go by.
Terrific place. The owner Michael could not have been nicer. Great duck. Great views of the Ministry.
Bennett's is a lovely restaurant, centrally located next to the Minster. It's got great food (my favourite is the duck!) and wine and has a very nice and cosy athmosphere. The large windows makes it a perfect spot to do some people-watching, and spending time here is tempting and comfortable.
This is a place I will keep coming back to when in York!
Booked for a slightly belated Valentines dinner. The location, next to one of the most Iconic buildings in England, is exceptional , but the place was not overrun with tourists. The ambiance was tasteful with a slightly retro style, the service was friendly but unobtrusive, and the food was excellent . ( I had the Salmon, my partner had the chicken, we both had the warming roast vegetable soup and the sticky toffee pudding) Will revisit if in York again .
We love this cosy bistro. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic food guaranteed. Great watching the world go by as you enjoy your meal.
Bennets was a very lovely surprise to us both, booked because we couldnt get in to where we had initially planned.
Turned out to be a real them, staff were very accommodating, friendly, helpful and professional.
Food was excellent with a lovely view of the minister and surroundings, very quiet and ticked all the boxes for us.
Thought had obviously gone into the choice of menu and wines available, my partner and I will happily be returning.
Fabulous food and service - would definitely recommend!
Only looked the day before on open table was recommend so booked it, would recommend it to anyone was lovely and good value, will most definitely return
Booked here for an evening meal on a New Year trip to York. Everything was perfect. We had beautiful smoked haddock . The ambience of the restaurant was really good and it's proximity to the Minster is superb. Would recommend it to anyone.
Bennett’s is my favorite little cafe/bistro in the world. Literally. I come from the USA to York just to sit in this cafe, have the best scones with clotted cream & jam, and people watch by the Minster. This time I brought my husband and children. We had dinner together and enjoyed the lovely, quiet ambience of the transformed cafe turned bistro. The food is delicious, from starter to dessert, and the service is top notch. In the morning before our train we returned for tea and scones. Mike is the wonderful owner of this precious place and he is truly a gracious host to all who enter his cafe. I can not wait to return to York as it holds a piece of my heart, and Bennett’s is a part of that.
The service was polite and first class.the food was excellent.its also set in a beautiful location
Personal attention to service at its best.A pleasure to visit on our yearly trip to York.
Bennett’s Bistro was excellent, food was top notch the service good although the waiter /maitre de was a little lacking in personality and wasn’t particularly friendly .Nicely situated near the Minster with a quite romantic atmosphere ,overall very good.Booked the table on line and the whole thing went seamlessly making for a very enjoyable experience.
Lovely spot by the Minster that transforms from tea shop by day to cosy restaurant by night. Excellent food and nice friendly staff made for an enjoyable evening.
Just great food, good service and beautiful location.
A great meal, yet again.
Great Food, Great Service, fantastic setting.
interesting menu with delightful combinations, enjoyed everything...staff very friendly and helpful.
Wonderful " find ", close to the Theatre Royal, The Minster, Museum Gardens and specialist shops.
Atmosphere and food, superb.
A real gem.
We live 30 miles away but certainly worth the journey to visit Bennett's alone.
We were warmly welcomed and even offered the chance to move to a window table before we ordered. The food was well presented and tasted delicious all in all a lovely meal
We were going to hear the Halle orchestra in the Minster at 7.30pm and having arrived almost to the minute of the booked time we hoped to have a leisurely meal.
However we sat for one and a quarter hours during which time we had some bread and a jug of water before any food arrived. This meant that we didn`t have any time for a dessert or coffee.Once the main course arrived it was very acceptable.
My wife is disabled and getting her up and down the stairs to the toilet was a nightmare because of lack of satisfactory rails. There needs to be an indication that there are no disabled facilities.

Top notch food from a small menu-------certainly top of the list in York for food quality and the chef's skills.
Live 30 miles away but we will certainly return and recommend it to friends and family.
The second time we have eaten at Bennets and it was wonderful, quiet, excellent service and delicious food.
Very relaxed atmosphere lovely food attentive staff. Would definitely eat here again
Lovely food, friendly service, good choice on both the menu & wine list. Couldn't fault it & will return!
Excellent meal! The food was delicious and very very good value for the quality of the food. Very friendly and efficient service. We had s great evening.
Food OK and service ok, ordered rib eye and not given option of having potatoes rather than chips, not asked if would like mustard etc. Rib eye overcooked well-done rather than medium. Asked for English mustard which helped to lift. Wife had the lamb which she thourghly enjoyed
Very friendly and attentive service. Great setting overlooking the Minster.
Small menu but well thought out with combinations excellent. It's quite a small cafe with a little subdued atmosphere but I suppose if you like a quiet meal then this is the place.
Good location with a view of the Minster.
Service very good and they serve real ale in bottles which is a plus for me.
Overall very good and worth a try
We always thought Bennett's was a tea shop, and the truth is that that's what it was until recently. Now it becomes a bistro in the evenings and after our visit we'd put it up with the best in York. The food is good, the service is pleasant and friendly. It's not noisy and the tables are not all crammed together like some places I could name. If you thought you knew Bennett's take a look one evening. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Extremely pleasant and reasonably priced restaurant near the entrance to York Minster. Ambience was very relaxed and the food was quite good.
Lovely service and food birthday celebration and candle added to dessert. Location fabulous with lovely views of cathedral
Our table was ready at the time we reserved. Atmosphere was good - quiet and refined. Staff were very attentive, constantly checking everything was ok, refilling glasses, etc. And then the food - excellent. Starters were prawns from the standard menu and grilled mackerel from the specials board. Both superb. Mains were the trio of pork and the duck. Wine was superb too, as was the coffee. All in all, one to remembered.
Excellent food and service. Evening meal, booking recommend.
Great food and ambiance, well located and easy to find. Very helpful and welcoming staff. Will definitely come back
We found this bistro on trip advisor and we're dining to celebrate my friends birthday. The service, courtesy and general ambience were all excellent - and as for the dessert - I only have on special occasions and this certainly did not disappoint. Would definitely visit for coffee during the day too if this is the standard to be expected! Definitely recommend this establishment.
In York for the day to meet our son and wanted a restaurant that was independent. We were not disappointed by the food, the view and the atmosphere. Refreshing to have wholesome food in an individual environment with the most amazing view. We will be back when we return to York.
my wife and I read reviews of this restaurant and, having done so, chose to book.
Not the best of decisions.
We both enjoy fish so we asked for monkfish, almost top of the menu (but it was a special occasion).
Not the best of decisions.
To be fair, the food was well cooked and presented, but the portion of monkfish was no bigger than a playing card. Again to be fair, we were offered an extra portion of vegetables, which I accepted, but we both left the restaurant still hungry, despite forking out for a £70 bill. Back to the hotel for a cup of tea and its biscuits.
There are other restaurants in York which give better value and equally good cooking, so sorry Bennetts, we visit no more.
Very attentive service, enjoyed our meals. The duck breast was very nice.
Quite a small restaurant - only around 12 tables so best to book. Good atmosphere, and view of the Minster.
Only minor point was that my date would have liked to see chicken on the menu.
Wonderful restaurant! Amazingly friendly staff. Made our anniversary meal very special indeed
