First class service with excellent food. Staff helpful, friendly but unobtrusive. Excellent restaurant
Went Saturday night after reading different reviews. Warm welcome and nice table by the window to watch variety of comings and going’s typical of a weekend In York.
Good wine , nice starters . Main course of salmon was good on bed of crushed new potatoes, Steak and sauce good but why oh why serve soggy chips soaked in oil - not rocket science to get oil temperature hot enough. In fairness replacements were given when we pointed it out - being typically British we said they were better but weren’t really. Vegetables nicely cooked but quantity was more for one than two.
Pudding was fine - in fact wife said Home made rice pudding was outstanding
This was my first visit back to York and indeed Bennett's for a few years. I made my dinner reservation in advance of my trip and I also took the opportunity to pay a morning visit for a coffee and a delightful freshly made scone!
Dinner was stunning in everyway, the quality of the produce used; the chef's skill and attention to detail was first class all of these things put together (including the wine and table service) gave me the best dining experience I've enjoyed in a long time - thanks for the memory!
A wide range of choices on the menu, excellent wine list, the food was sublime, service was prompt but not intrusive. An extremely enjoyable meal in lovely, central York surroundings near the Minster.
Perfect for a pre-theatre meal with excellent views of the Minster
Absolutely loved Bennett's , we were celebrating my sister's birthday and were on a mini break to York. we felt welcome from the minute we arrived until we left and the staff also asked who's birthday it was and gave my sister a glass of Prosecco a very nice touch. The food was fantastic and none of us had any negative comments we all had a main and a dessert. Three had steak all cooked to perfection and I had Duck it was to die for. The service was also second to none. We would not hesitate to go back when we next visit York and would highly recommend this restaurant. Also you have a great view of York Minster which is just across the road. Also inexpensive
Great location bang next to York Minster. Food was excellent and service was good if somewhat rushed. The big drawback is that there's no getting away from the fact that this is a cafe during the day - it looks and feels like a cafe with zero restaurant ambiance.
We always go to Bennetts when visiting York. It's in a great location opposite the minster with lovely food and polite service.
A real gem and well worth travelling 30 miles to dine here.
As close as one could be to the wonderful Minster!
Would like to keep it a secret but that would be very selfish!
Friendly, intimate Bistro. Really good service, food was interesting and tasty - and the clientele was varied in age and numbers. Some nice touches and decent wine list. Waiter was very helpful.
Very welcoming lovely staff and delicious food thank you
Good service and duck cooked perfectly. Good service and gluten free bread available.
Most of the menu could be adapted for gluten free which was excellent.
Would recommend and book again.
Delicious poached pear blue cheese roasted walnut salad
I dined here on a wet weekday evening in March so it was very quiet. However, despite being the only diner in the restaurant at one point, I was not made to feel awkward or rushed. I had a delicious meal and the service was polite, efficient and friendly. The starter was a poached pear with local blue cheese and walnut salad and If I had one small niggle it was that the pear in the starter had been in the fridge and was quite cold compared to the other ingredients but that's my taste as I don't like fridge-cold savoury food: however, the combination of flavours was lovely. The main course was duck breast and it was the tenderest duck I've ever eaten. The pudding was a panna cotta and caramel and ginger ice cream - equally delicious! If you have a table by the window you have a lovely view of the Minster and can watch the world go by.
Terrific place. The owner Michael could not have been nicer. Great duck. Great views of the Ministry.
Bennett's is a lovely restaurant, centrally located next to the Minster. It's got great food (my favourite is the duck!) and wine and has a very nice and cosy athmosphere. The large windows makes it a perfect spot to do some people-watching, and spending time here is tempting and comfortable.
This is a place I will keep coming back to when in York!
Booked for a slightly belated Valentines dinner. The location, next to one of the most Iconic buildings in England, is exceptional , but the place was not overrun with tourists. The ambiance was tasteful with a slightly retro style, the service was friendly but unobtrusive, and the food was excellent . ( I had the Salmon, my partner had the chicken, we both had the warming roast vegetable soup and the sticky toffee pudding) Will revisit if in York again .
We love this cosy bistro. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic food guaranteed. Great watching the world go by as you enjoy your meal.
Bennets was a very lovely surprise to us both, booked because we couldnt get in to where we had initially planned.
Turned out to be a real them, staff were very accommodating, friendly, helpful and professional.
Food was excellent with a lovely view of the minister and surroundings, very quiet and ticked all the boxes for us.
Thought had obviously gone into the choice of menu and wines available, my partner and I will happily be returning.
Fabulous food and service - would definitely recommend!
Only looked the day before on open table was recommend so booked it, would recommend it to anyone was lovely and good value, will most definitely return
Booked here for an evening meal on a New Year trip to York. Everything was perfect. We had beautiful smoked haddock . The ambience of the restaurant was really good and it's proximity to the Minster is superb. Would recommend it to anyone.
Bennett’s is my favorite little cafe/bistro in the world. Literally. I come from the USA to York just to sit in this cafe, have the best scones with clotted cream & jam, and people watch by the Minster. This time I brought my husband and children. We had dinner together and enjoyed the lovely, quiet ambience of the transformed cafe turned bistro. The food is delicious, from starter to dessert, and the service is top notch. In the morning before our train we returned for tea and scones. Mike is the wonderful owner of this precious place and he is truly a gracious host to all who enter his cafe. I can not wait to return to York as it holds a piece of my heart, and Bennett’s is a part of that.
The service was polite and first class.the food was excellent.its also set in a beautiful location
Personal attention to service at its best.A pleasure to visit on our yearly trip to York.
Bennett’s Bistro was excellent, food was top notch the service good although the waiter /maitre de was a little lacking in personality and wasn’t particularly friendly .Nicely situated near the Minster with a quite romantic atmosphere ,overall very good.Booked the table on line and the whole thing went seamlessly making for a very enjoyable experience.
Lovely spot by the Minster that transforms from tea shop by day to cosy restaurant by night. Excellent food and nice friendly staff made for an enjoyable evening.
Just great food, good service and beautiful location.
A great meal, yet again.
Great Food, Great Service, fantastic setting.
interesting menu with delightful combinations, enjoyed everything...staff very friendly and helpful.
Wonderful " find ", close to the Theatre Royal, The Minster, Museum Gardens and specialist shops.
Atmosphere and food, superb.
A real gem.
We live 30 miles away but certainly worth the journey to visit Bennett's alone.
We were warmly welcomed and even offered the chance to move to a window table before we ordered. The food was well presented and tasted delicious all in all a lovely meal
We were going to hear the Halle orchestra in the Minster at 7.30pm and having arrived almost to the minute of the booked time we hoped to have a leisurely meal.
However we sat for one and a quarter hours during which time we had some bread and a jug of water before any food arrived. This meant that we didn`t have any time for a dessert or coffee.Once the main course arrived it was very acceptable.
My wife is disabled and getting her up and down the stairs to the toilet was a nightmare because of lack of satisfactory rails. There needs to be an indication that there are no disabled facilities.

Top notch food from a small menu-------certainly top of the list in York for food quality and the chef's skills.
Live 30 miles away but we will certainly return and recommend it to friends and family.
The second time we have eaten at Bennets and it was wonderful, quiet, excellent service and delicious food.
Very relaxed atmosphere lovely food attentive staff. Would definitely eat here again
Lovely food, friendly service, good choice on both the menu & wine list. Couldn't fault it & will return!
Excellent meal! The food was delicious and very very good value for the quality of the food. Very friendly and efficient service. We had s great evening.
Food OK and service ok, ordered rib eye and not given option of having potatoes rather than chips, not asked if would like mustard etc. Rib eye overcooked well-done rather than medium. Asked for English mustard which helped to lift. Wife had the lamb which she thourghly enjoyed
Very friendly and attentive service. Great setting overlooking the Minster.
