What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.2

Having dinner in Berners Tavern feels like eating inside the Sistine Chapel, or at least a really, really rich guy’s house.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

A lovely experience in an exquisite room. Excellent sommelier, careful service, but the food was very good, but not really special.

I booked this for my partners 30th birthday surprise dinner.....WOW WOW WOW...he was totally blown away from the minute we walked through the doors. Service was fantastic; attentive and efficient delivered with class
This was the first time we had eaten there and we will certainly be back. Food was outstanding and of great quality....can't praise it enough
Overall, a great dining experience, both left feeling that we had experienced true customer service excellence, in surroundings of class and quality. Totally recommend you give it as try

Stunning setting, great food and service - and good for people watching too. Also good to have pre-or post dinner drinks at the hotel bar or backbar.

We visited Berners Tavern after watching a Channel 4 programme that tasted the Mac and cheese with red wine beef. We were pleasantly surprised by the setting, high ceilings and walls covered in paintings. The noise level in the room was really loud, it was hard to hear other people talking. The food was excellent, portion sizes were small but tasty. Service was good. We were offered a glass of champagne but refused due to the cost. I’m glad we went but would not rush to return.

This was a breakfast business meeting - I did not complain about the food at the time however I did tell the lady who took payment. I had avocado, poached eggs on sour dough. The eggs were stone cold (not even luke warm) and I could not cut through the sour dough crusts they were so hard. Unacceptable for the price you are charging.

Fantastic atmosphere with well organized staff. Friendly and supportive! Chef came to the table and shook hands, rarely seen!

Only criticism:
- language barriers, staff spoke broken English which resulted in some misunderstandings
- chateubriand could have been warmer, was too chilled
- noise level, during peak hours, is super high

Anyway, definitely a next time!

Desperately slow to take drink order and give menus. Was completely ignored for 15 minutes. Pumpkin soup was excellent. Beer glasses were horrid

Beautiful place but won't hurtle back as part of a hotel and too big.

We arrived for our 1.30pm slot but were given blank looks by three ladies on reception, and told our table wasn't ready and we were to wait in the lobby of the hotel. After a couple of reminders we were eventually shown a table at 13.50. We were given a set menu to choose our dishes from. We understood we would have a menu for vegetarian and pescatarians too, but this turned out to be one choice per course. And the vegetarian had an avocado allergy so that ruled out the starters! We asked for another menu but were told that this was it! It was our fault apparently because we should have emailed the restaurant in advance. We called the manager. He gave us some options from the bar menu and that was resolved, of a fashion... The drinks then didn't arrive, so we had to call over the manager about that. Then the Virgin Mary arrived but nothing else. Then the other drinks arrived but with another Virgin Mary! They saw the other one untouched and took the second one away. By 15.30 we received our mains (surrounded now by people having their afternoon teas!). The manager aplogised and offered us more wine which we needed and accepted. By 16.30 we had still not received the deserts and coffee. Two of my party had to leave, and my fresh mint tea didn't arrive when the coffee arrived, so I had to call the manager again. Still no deserts. As there were three of us left we just asked for the bill. They gave us the whole meal and drinks on the house. Although it was the least they could do, it ruined our family Sunday lunch together. I am very unimpressed with this restaurant - its reputation is not valid as 5 star and the prices are inflated, choices are limited and staff are not trained well enough and the kitchen appeared to be in utter chaos.

Went for brunch as it was highlighted as a recommended spot and was hugely disappointing. Service took a long time, brought the wrong menu and the food was below expectations. I ordered the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was completely bland, it was merely a butter sauce. For the price of the dish (and location) I would have expected way better.

One of the best restaurants in town...you haven’t been to London if you haven’t given Berners tavern a try. The mushroom chiabatta and Mac and cheese are signature dishes well worth their reputation. Their wine list has labels you will not find anywhere else. Service is exceptional and the wall deco is so classy and unique. Not cheap but worth every penny...you’re in for a treat!

We had a wonderful meal, celebrating our friend’s significant birthday. The ambience of the restaurant was welcoming and friendly with an air of sophistication. We chose to eat from the Set Lunch menu. the duck hash was exquisite, the cheese option was out of this world. There was a special cake for the birthday girl and the service was warm and helpful. Would thoroughly recommend this place for a long, lingering lunch which allowed us to catch up with one another over a delicious meal.

This was a breakfast booking. The room is amazing. Worth a trip for that alone. The service was charming but rather haphazard. Seated quickly and given menus but then largely ignored. We had to prompt the wait staff for everything - it wasn’t even that busy. The food was ok. The coffee was great. I set a lot of store by good coffee!

Very disappointed. This was my fourth time at the restaurant, as it’s one of my favourites, and it felt short. Way short. I met the entire waiting staff, and it still took more than 20 minutes to get our drinks. My ribeye was most certainly not fresh, as it was chewy, and lacked seasoning (it was also depressingly presented). I asked for ketchup and was given the bottle. Sure, fine, no big deal, the bottle; however, in a restaurant like this one, I expect the ketchup to be served in the appropriate serving cup/dish/whatever it is they put ketchup in.

They did take the ribeye off the bill, which I appreciate. But because I appreciate the restaurant, I want them to know what’s wrong so they right it before it gets worse.
