What Insiders Are Saying
Having dinner in Berners Tavern feels like eating inside the Sistine Chapel, or at least a really, really rich guy’s house.
Good food. Haphazard service.
We decided to celebrate our christmas dinner at Berners. It was an amazing experience at this fabulous restaurant. Staff are very friendly and attentive. We had the weekend roast special, my friend just had too much butter in her roasted lemon sole but everythin is all great. We will definitely be back and will try their breakfast menu.
A beautiful dining room, attentive service and good food. Disappointing that our group was moved on from our table after just over an hour, otherwise no complaints.
Fantastic ambience, class place to have a delicious breakfast.
Breakfast not at the standard of the place. Fruit saled poor. Limited choices of sweets.
Totally excellent food but the noise level was oppressive - so much so that it was impossible to hold a conversation. Nothing to do with the normal noise of peoples conversations or those working - jus the hideous music playing from loudspeakers too close to the table.
Shame because the food is top class
Berner's is a decent quality restaurant with an excellent menu choice and friendly staff. Whether you are looking for elegant cuisine or the comfort of fish and chips it is an excellent choice.
We had the most amazing dinner- the food was gorgeous & we were lucky enough to have Jason Atherton plate up our chateaubriand which was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, and we had a really brilliant evening.
We got there in good time for our 8.30pm reservation and was told the table wasn’t ready but would be in 5minutes. At the bar, it took a good 15minutes for someone to. Come take our drinks order. 20minutes later we were still waiting for our table and were eventually sat down closer to 9pm. Food also took a while as did the service to clear our table! Overall, the night felt like a long one and we didn’t not leave feeling like we’d had a relaxing evening.
Lovely ambience and stunning room, however we were left for quite a while without a drinks or food order being taken or being tended to, I had to ask twice if we could order some drinks.
Superb as usual
Great menu, great service, great food. Lovely retro ambiance. Great for people watching.
Rib eye steak was not very good and I was overcharged - charged for 3 macaroni cheese side dishes when we only had 2. I didn’t raise either at the time as I was business entertaining and didn’t want to make a scene.
Greta food, great wine, great service. Great place for a friends catch up.
we would come again. Very grand room. Lovely food l. Too much pressure to have alcohol.
Always ask us leave . Then tell us other people book our table .I can't under we pay a lot of money for our dinner .why Always ask us leave ... too bad experience. I will tell friend won't go . I really don't like this restaurant. The most terrible one in the world.
We went there for a girls lunch expecting a gorgeous ambiance (which we got!) but were surprised & delighted by the delicious food. Every dish was review-worthy spectacular. The Dover sole was the best I've ever had. The desserts were a work of art, and my only complaint is more chocolate options please!
Really enjoyable breakfast, food was lovely and service was great.
The food was wonderful but we were left waiting for our table for over 30 minutes after our booked time, despite asking when we would be seated three times, and simply being told the table was being prepared the first two times. It was only on the third attempt that we were told we hadn’t been checked in. You would think they might have offered a complimentary drink by way of apology but nothing! This was such a shame as the food and setting were wonderful, and the service once at the table impeccable.
This site isn’t up to date- weekend roast isn’t served until 12pm, and breakfast closes at 11am.
We made a reservation for 11am and some things were no longer available on the breakfast menu either and the gentleman guiding us to the table told us we had to rush because they were closing the kitchen...:-/
I saw reviews that their roasts are good but their breakfast isn’t all that great... such a shame. The venue is very pretty though!
Fantastic food and service from the Berners tavern team as always. Bit noisy but it was Friday night after all :0). The wine recommendations were really good - if you’re into your chenin blanc then don’t miss the FMC.....will definitely be back soon.
My husband and I were on vacation in London and were really looking forward to having dinner at Berners Tavern after reading all the stellar reviews. We were, however, disappointed. We are big foodies and will readily shell out for outstanding food, but there was just nothing outstanding about the food at Berners. They much-lauded mac and cheese was too watery and one-dimensional. We've certainly made better at home. The rest of the food was good, but definitely not worth the amount charged. We will be going elsewhere next time we're in London.
A second visit to Berners Tavern for a pre-theatre meal and it did not disappoint.
Really nice dinner and atmosphere
Definitely the best mac n cheese in London! stunning interiors, excellent service and super friendly staff. They really looked after us. Great place for a drink and late night meal too.
I travel to London on business often - and this has been one of my favourite places to dine out - alone or with clients. Note the past tense - I won't come again or recommend it to others. The service was poor and the food was mediocre. In my view it mostly came down to service - as perhaps the dishes just weren't to my taste. The staff were more interested in each other than they were in their customers. The amount of time they spent chatting to each other - joking and laughing - should have been spent on their customers. It felt like we were an inconvenience - at least I felt that way. I have no idea who my waiter actually was - as four different people served me at some point - none very interested - except for the first gentleman who took my wine order - after that it went downhill. Now I understand why the rating on Open Table keeps decreasing. Too bad - it's such a lovely space - and it was really good in the past.
A lovely room and atmosphere but mediocre food and service with a hefty price tag
This was our fourth time visiting Berners Tavern. We have previously been for anniversaries, and this was another of those occasions. Every time we have chosen the chateaubriand to share, and this was the only time we were disappointed in it. It used to be that the lean steak would come sliced on your plate, with a side of mac and cheese with ox cheek, and it was divine. Sadly, this time, the cut looked more akin to a hanger steak, and there were several streaks of fat within. The mac and cheese is now an additional £8 (£10 if you want it with a beef slice), and is much smaller, while the steak itself now comes adorned with greens; potatoes and mushrooms. It was delicious, however I was rather disappointed, and wouldn't return for this again knowing how good it used to be. We had a flaming Alaskan for desert, and as well as being a show - as they flambe at the table - it tasted delicious.
The service was impeccable with the sommelier being of particular note with his tales of far afield vineyards, humour and obvious passion for his job.
This must be the most impressive restaurant I visited in London. The art and design are absolutely stunning, the atmosphere is buzzing regardless if you go for lunch or dinner. The menu is great and the steak is the best we had in London.
I highly recommend it for special occasions such as birthdays as you definitely are treated like a king/queen.
Thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the service was highly attentive. The set menu was good value and the food was pretty good. Overall a good lunchtime experience and buzz.
The restaurant is beautiful. There is a good vibe and it’s certainly busy but not hat you can’t relax. The food was exceptional. But the service was poor in that none of the waiters smiled or were particularly pleasant.
Our table was 30 mins late.
Not a huge amount of choice for starters - 2 out of 5 dishes mushroom based.
Steak was very good.
Too noisy for me, but it was nice to see so many round tables for an attempt at conversation.
Service not friendly at all.
In the Punch Room, great service and tasty popcorn...definitely worth a visit.
Every time we go there, we experience a special evening.Although, on Wednesday I must point out that the service was beyond perfection. Very polite and attentive staff.
Looking forward for the next !
We started with a glass rose champagne from the fabulous drinks trolley
the vegetarian options are fantastic, the flaming baked Alaska was a highlight!
All the staff were professional and friendly and genuinely looked like they loved working there and part of a great team
Everytime I visit London I would go to this restaurant because of the food and ambiance. Food was extremely dissapointing.
I ordered the lamb to share, it had no taste and was very dry.
I’m in love with the interior decor, very nice ambiance. Lunch set serve until 5.30pm which gives great value for money. Good food good service, I’ll definitely return
The food was absolutely delicious and the ambiance were wonderful. I so wish I could recommend it to friends and say that I will come back but the service was not up to par with the setting or the quality of food or the price point. The booking was confirmed twice by phone including the menu that would be available for a 5pm Sunday seating (Sunday roast and a la Carte were options) but on the day-of, received a call in the morning to tell us this was a mistake and only a la Carte would be available unless we wanted to come one hour earlier - it was too late to make changes for our party of five so sadly we missed the roast. Also, it was mentioned in the online booking form and confirmed again on the phone that the booking was for a birthday celebration (they even took down the birthday girl’s name) - while we saw at least two other tables have a special treat to celebrate their birthday, our table did not have anything in the end. Despite the extensive wine list, there were no red wine glasses which seemed very strange. The wait staff did not know how to pour wine - very sloppy with wine being spilt on the table constantly as well as dripping from the bottle. Same thing with water, including spilling it all over my hand (with no apology). They also kept mixing up the water - a few people at our table were having sparkling water and the number of times their glasses were topped-up with tap water was shocking (and vice versa) despite repeatedly telling the wait staff. These are very minor things but when you are in a setting such as this and for the high quality (and price) of the food you get to experience, you expect a little more attention to detail. I hope they will take this feedback on board so that we can come back and enjoy it for what it can be.
Wonderful professional staff and setting
Fabulous evening. The service was wonderful and the food exceptional.
I booked the wrong evening 16th instead of the 9th Nov which was a bit of a mix up but the hostess managed to squeeze us in without a booking without any issue. This is despite the restaurant being fully booked. Service and food are up to the normal excellent standard and the ambience and location are amazing. One of my favorite restaurants in London.
