Outstanding Sunday lunch, I've been many times and never had a bad meal £35 for 2 course or £40 for 3 represents amazing value given its location and aesthetically gorgeous dining room. The food was cooked to perfection, the wine was superb - ok its expensive - but hey what a great experience. The waiters spot-on.
Ambience and surroundings are fab, but the range of menu choices is limited, the quality of the meat and its flavour (steak and pork chop) were average at best and it is over-priced (£6 for one portion of broccoli is just robbery, and the wine list is pretentious). We have a house in Spain so know how much they get the wines for so the mark-up is eye watering…!
The wine list at Berners Tavern is borderline offensive. Not just in terms of the (exorbitant) price but also the way they try to pressure you into buying something expensive. Within 15 mins of my arrival I had a sommelier glibly recommending £200 bottles of red, as though price is no object and this is the only way fine dining can be done. When I then chose my own wine (one of the only bottles under £50), the sommelier couldn’t have looked/sounded more disappointed in me. I don’t go out for dinner so the staff can make me feel like a cheapskate. The whole scenario was awkward and unnecessary…and set a bad tone from the get-go. The food itself was average. Nothing memorable, TBH. Just a great dining space and some beautiful decor…seemingly going to waste.
I was expecting a simple birthday cake/ message for my friend as I requested upon booking. But unfortunately nothing served.
A lovely restaurant with high ceilings and stunning old fashioned decor. The only minus was the service which lost momentum the time desert course came around. This was rectified by management who kindly gave us free deserts and coffee which they had offered themselves. A lovely Sunday lunch and experience.
